    Fast boot times with a Ryzen 7950X, 4 x NVME drives, and ASUS motherboard. How is that working out for you? It sure didn't equate to fast boot times for me!

    • @handsonkatie
      @handsonkatie  4 месяца назад +1

      It's very fast indeed - you checked bios settings? Wonder if something slowing you down?

    • @amartin3893
      @amartin3893 4 месяца назад

      @@handsonkatie It's odd in that only boot time is slow. Read and write speeds are exactly what they should be. My Nvme is a Samsung 2TB 990 pro. Motherboard is a strix X670E A. But boot time is as slow as a HDD boot time! I've put it down to having 4 RAM sticks for now, but there are a couple of things in the bios I've been meaning to try. It's been suggested to try disabling fast boot, and enabling context restore.

    • @cosminmilitaru9920
      @cosminmilitaru9920 4 месяца назад +1

      Do you need to activate Fast Boot in BIOS so that it skips some checks at startup? Otherwise it takes time to get feedback from all components... You should see servers or HEDT with 128GB+ of RAM, snooze fest.

    • @handsonkatie
      @handsonkatie  4 месяца назад

      Ah, that's interesting - have you tried with two sticks as a test? Can't see it being anything to do with your drives, they're plenty fast enough. You could be right regarding 4 x RAM
      - that's why I went with 2 x 48GB DIMMs until they sort out the bios firmware for 4 x sticks as 128gb+ support is pretty patchy. I plan to just slot in an extra two when support is there to take me to 192GB.... (a girl can never have enough RAM, eh?? ;) ) @@amartin3893

      Of course, not a problem at all - I actually just collected bits over several months as I was keeping an eye out in Black Friday, Christmas and New Year sales for the best deals, so it's probably a bit distortive and naturally I didn't buy a case, but it was around £3000/$3800 I'd estimate. Got a great deal on the GPU, likewise the NVMe drives were very, very cheap in black friday and so on.

    Here I am shouting in the comments, less is more with thermal paste. A thin layer is all you need. It is more a leveling compound than an interface compound. The metal on the heatsink and CPU housing are better conductors. You just want the thermal paste to act as a filler in between the micro gaps in contact. TL;DR you might have used a bit too much.

    • @handsonkatie
      @handsonkatie  4 месяца назад +2

      🤣🤣. I know, but I get into cake icing mode and I can't help myself! 🤭 I know this is a topic of much debate, I align generally with this sort of perspective: ruclips.net/user/shortsAEg0rr6eUEI?si=Aeaa7Z1w7Cm8cVH_
      Would welcome thoughts though!

    • @_Reverse_Flash
      @_Reverse_Flash 4 месяца назад +2

      @@handsonkatie 🙂So thoughts on that tech short...for coverage he is correct but there is an optimal 'thickness'. He layers it on thick and covers it with the spatula but he is relying on the heatsink to press out the excess. Even with this method, you get excess in between the CPU and the block. Do use enough to get full coverage but it should just be a scraped-on layer, rather than an 'iced-on' (icing) layer.
      This way heat transfer is not limited by blocking the highly thermally conductive sink and CPU housing contact with lower thermally conductive TP, and yet those micro air gaps (low conductivity) between the block and CPU housing are still filled.

    • @BruceHoult
      @BruceHoult 4 месяца назад

      If I don't lose my man card by saying so, I think the principle at work here is more like make-up foundation -- but on a much smaller scale -- than like yummy icing. None is better than too much. You want most of the contact to be metal to metal, NOT metal to paste to metal. Thermal paste is better than air gaps, it's much worse than metal to metal. @@handsonkatie

    I am working with SSD and NVME since forever. One brand worth ALL the attention and that's it: Samsung. Why? Forget about the specs. Get the PRO version of their chips and your are set. Need to transfer your setup to a new hardware? Easy, use their software called Samsung Data Migration which is later baked in Samsung Magician and just clone everything to your new drive. Monitor your drive's health with Samsung Magician and set an OverProvisioning space on your drive which come in handy later when your drive WILL fail. On Samsung drives OverProvisioning cells will take over dead cells job and you can continue working until you run out of spare cells. NONE of the manufacturers are offring such a software and Samsung is the only one caring about what nobody really cares to say: SSD and NVME are consumable drives. True story.
