    I'm with you, and have believed so for many years. It's absolutely crazy that anyone in a manual trade (plumber, truck driver, ...) thinks nothing of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on work-related equipment, but so many businesses don't want to give $100k or $200k salary computer professionals a computer costing even $10k, and keep it updated regularly. It's absolute insanity. And ahhhh, yeah, a 3800X is fairly outdated, and wasn't the best even at the time. I'm just upgrading at the moment. My old machine is older than yours, a 2990WX from late 2018 (though I built the machine in early 2019) but it's 32 core so still pretty fast. I was tossing up whether to go for a 16 P core 7950X like yours, or an i9-13900K (or 14900K) with 8 P cores and 16 E cores. Or their mobile versions, the 7945HX (first and only 16 core AMD mobile chip) or i9-13900HX. In both cases the mobile versions benchmark (I"m looking at Geekbench) only about 5% slower than the desktop. Some benchmarks show the AMDs slightly faster than the Intel (and I'm an AMD fan from way back (90s)), but for what I do the most -- repeatedly building large software packages such as gcc, llvm, or the Linux kernel -- the Intel comes in a bit faster. And being able to take a 2.5 kg computer around the country or the world with me more easily than a 20 kg one seemed worth a minor 5% speed difference. So I went with a Lenovo Legion laptop. Unlike you, I don't use the GPU, so I got one with a 4060 -- and will probably use the iGPU anyway.

    Interesting idea the "lifemark" - I've often thought that we have become "slaves to the machines" spending so much time waiting for them to load / deliver the output / charge / etc.
    You mentioned CUDA several times, I'm interested to hear how you'll be pounding away with your new beast :)

    • @handsonkatie

      Oh yes, there's a whole philosophical video I could do on that (bring in the psychology and research on this - eg how attention spans have shortened since 1950s and the impacts of this), but I think I'd be killed by the youtube algorithm by the same folk without attention spans!! I could bore my guinea pig patreons with it as a test or something maybe!!! regarding CUDA - oh lots of AI bashing, 3d rendering, games, anything I can burn some cores with!!!

  • @daniwalmsley611
    @daniwalmsley611 5 месяцев назад +6

    Interestingky such big improvements can actually increase the time spent waiting. For example, durimg a 20 minute AI generation, you might switch over to another task which could only take 5-10 seconds to swap between. But it's not worth it if it onky takes 30 seconds to render. So by shrinking the time spent to wait, you can increase the time you spend actively waiting vs passively waiting.
    However in games or when other tasks are dependant on the task your currently doing it can be a significant improvemeng as you've shown

    • @handsonkatie
      @handsonkatie  5 месяцев назад +3

      Yes that's possible too - although given neurologically it takes 20-30mins to regain focus after task switching, this would further extend the 'flow' challenges I mentioned at the end..! It's a bit of a rabbit hole, eh?? 🤣🤣

      @@handsonkatie Speaking as someone connected with one channel that has around 20K subscribers, and a couple of others that are different projects and are developing, I can appreciate the learning curve that many of us go through and which you reference. This includes learning what to use and then, inevitably, upgrading. Do keep posting your content please. You have so much that will have you be a big channel on YT. And I do mean really big.
      As for what you mentioned about video editing - Davinci Resolve is hard to beat. The free version is also great, although you have free access to proper AV1 rendering and such with an AMD card but with other GPUs, the paid version is required. Other than that, a great program for video and audio editing. As a Zen Center that doesn't require people to pay for teaching, we're not able to get hold of a 4090 for example but certainly some experiences are very relatable. I also enjoy that you enjoy your new GPU.
      Livestreaming, as an option in Nvidia and AMD software is made fairly straight forward. However, as you may well already know, for the best quality and speed, OBS is just the 'one' to use. And it is harder to learn, though learnable. You'll have no real problem with that learning curve.
      And yes, there's yet more waiting lol. Maybe while you're waiting, consider mining for something like Kawpow with that system. As an exercise it's interesting, just about profitable too. Also a subject area on RUclips that is huge, though there is a negative ethical aspect to consider.
      Anyway, TLDR: I'm interested in what you have to say and subscribed. Do take good care of yourself - Kijo Sensei

      Hey! Thank you for taking the time to make such a lovely comment! So much expertise and tips, I'll take a lot from it and it really inspires me to keep producing videos. Davinci - yes I saw this, I already heavily use the Adobe suite, so Premiere is kinda free also in that sense (there's no real alternative to Photoshop, Illustrator etc) - but I agree I've heard loads of really good things about it, so I'll need to give it a whirl when I get a second. In many ways it might be better to get used to Premiere so I can see all the benefits of Da Vinci over it - at the moment I'm clueless in everything, so I can't really tell what's good/bad! I've been getting used to OBS - it's a brilliant piece of kit, love it's power - but know there's millions of extra plugins too I'm yet to discover! And I'll add mining to the list also! Thank you again for such a thoughtful comment, it made my day! ☺💖

      It wasn't a huge slouch! (32gb ram, RTX 2070ti etc) - it just really adds up, eg taking five seconds longer per turn on Civ VI is barely noticeable when you hit end turn, but then when each full game is 1500 turns...... 😎 I found it quite fascinating!

    PS What editor do you use? I guess it is some fancy proprietary cool and very expensive program? Don't they have audio graphical preview? Some of your audio is mono. = ) And by mono I mean stereo, but one of the channels is completely silent. Or is it my headphones? When I play the middle of the video it is alright, but at the end, it is not alright = )

      I recently upgraded too. I had some 4 core CPU, some integrated video card and 16 ram, which was maximum for that board. And it was okay. It was a 10 year ago configuration and it was still OK, It has 8 ram initially, I just added another 8. Some programs though start to show messages like "You CPU is obsolete". They could not find what else to say in this era of fake progress. = )
      And actually I do not see too much difference. Of course some operations can be done faster, but I am not a super computer owner, I do not render Marvel films.

As someone whose owned a store, selling and repairing pc hardware for more than 30 years, I've come to the conclusion the more time someone spends on their computer the dumber they become. People are drinking far too much of the "COOL AIDE" for their own good. Maybe that's the intent? That's one hell of a Rabbit Hole. Entertaining video, take care.

      For caulk, it depends on the region. In the mid-Atlantic regional accent (aka "standard American") we do keep the "l" in there.

I saw one commenter referring to you as having a Liverpudlian affect on some word, but the only concrete examples I can think of for this accent are the Beatles and the character Lister from "Red Dwarf", and you don't seem to sound like either to my American ear. • @iamhandy-man

      @micgent I think we're standing on firm ground with our pronunciation, considering the Middle English root. 🙂 But we do want to know where you folks got the extra "u" in aluminum. Hmmmmmm? Solder etymology: Middle English soudure, from Anglo-French, from souder to solder, from Latin solidare to make solid, from solidus solid

  • @monkofbob
    @monkofbob 5 месяцев назад +1

    Good work at first round of YouTubing. Cut the breathing from the sound. Clip your speech, you can hear the liverpuddlian laziness at the end of words. Cut everything to 75% of your script. You could have conflated all the other benchmarking to one “chapter” rather than making one for each.
    No one else needs the data, you can do a long cut of that. People want answers and less then three minutes is the standard attention time.
    You got me to click on the video so you get that plus from the algorithm, but if people don’t finish to the last second then it gets suppressed by the algo.
    Good luck and I wish you billions of subscribers.

      15 to 20 minutes is just the right time for a video that is relevant.
