    I think that truly talented singers are those who just really love singing. You can't really be a good singer when all your thoughts are about determinating yourself into one of these categories.
    Only when you truly love doing something without any second thoughts, you can be creative enough to find your unique way. And i'm not talking about love of being successful.

    This guy isn't describing gifted vs non-gifted singers. He's describing people who can sing and people who cannot sing. Being able to imitate pitch isn't a sign that someone is an excellent singer. It's a skill you're expected to have.

    • @tuttuti123
      @tuttuti123 8 лет назад +2

      i think that's the thing that you should have to sing

    • @joshbrucks
      @joshbrucks 5 лет назад +3

      he isnt talking about pitch. hes taking about tone. mum not maym or muum and also larynx position neutral not high or low. the ability to imitate how the pitch is made not just what pitch it is.

    • @akiontube1
      @akiontube1 5 лет назад +1

      You're expected to have this skill when you are gifted. If you are not then you have to try and something that you earn by yourself is not a gift.

    I'm definitely a gifted singer but my vocal range is only like 2 octaves and it's too low to sing 99% percent of songs because I can't hit the higher notes and I also can't remember lyrics :C

    I've been singing since I was small. My mom is incredibly talented, and I finally started taking lessons from her teacher about five years ago. I plan to major in vocal music performance when I start college next year.
    In my mind, anybody can sing if they truly put their mind to it and TRY TO LEARN. It won't come as naturally to some as to others, but while I'm talented in the arts (singing, flute, piccolo, photography) I've been TAUGHT a lot of what I know.

    Can I just say, that you were ahead of your time when it came to painting. I just LOVED the way you made the landscapes seem so alive. There's this one scene in particular and I can't recall the name, not sure if it was titled but, it's a boat in the middle of this lake and you can see the clouds in the background rolling off the hills. The colors are muted but it's just enough for the golden tones to really make it shine. Good luck with your singing, you are truly talented.

    I agree 100%. I use to imitate all kinds of things growing up. Dogs, cats, birds, humans, so singing by imitating come naturally. And as a singer who does this it becomes easier to change the quality of the tone when needed.

    I had a naturally good singing voice when I was young, I could sing along with U2 perfectly. I lost that good singing when puberty hit, but I'm getting it back towards the end of high school. I'm singing while playing guitar, which makes it easier. I'm also getting better at singing in public, as apposed to not even being able to talk clearly on stage.

  • @mradaChris
    @mradaChris 13 лет назад

    I agree with the imitation discussion. When I sang in my earlier years I would hear a person sing and would be able to harmonize instantly with them. I'd heard theirs and my notes in my head.

    This then helped me figure out notes when listening, I am able to know what song is being played, going by one instrumental beat, if I were to hear from a distance, I would know which song it was going by only one sound of that music/song. I am also able to hear when a note is flat, again even from a distance, as a performer, I have experienced acting, singing and dancing, I have collected a range of techniques and information about what singing, acting and dancing is.

    Very interesting topic Jesse! I'd like to add something. I've also noticed (and I've been singing also for about 12 years and I believe to be a "non-gifted" singer, and you can tell from my covers...) but when I listen to gifted singers, I immediately notice that their voice belongs to a specific genre, right away! When they sing whatever they have a vocal education or not, their voice is just different than their speaking voice... and sounds musical! Which is not the case of none-gifted ones...

    I believe all singing students have some kind of "gift" that makes him or her unique. The myth of singer being born with a one of a kind voice sometimes creates an unnecessary debate that nobody will win. Yes some people are born with bigger ranges or good control, but that does not make them better. The real gift is the result of all your hard work as you finally reach a level that you would've never thought possible to achieve.

Just singing the warm up at 1 try just by listening is something i thought was pretty basic for anyone . . it's pretty shocking then at how people suck then not to be rude lmao. Now i understand why people suck so bad in examples like Britains Got Talent, X Factor etc . . lol

    It has more to do with perfect pitch. Some can sing reguardless of accompaniment & can also experiment in diffferent scales & octaves. When we practice cover tunes, we emulate the artist because it brings us closer to the emotional expression. Then later on we must learn to design our own voice & identity.

    I think the best talent is the talent to easily learn. This talent opens to the door to many other talents. Of course, we are focusing on the natural ability of some to sing here, but people each have their own respective special qualities, and unfortunately, many of them haven't found it. I never sang before 10 months ago, and at that point, G4 was probably my highest note (A2 lowest). Now after using Mastering Mix and some other programs/books, I can go comfortably and strongly from G2. to E5

    If I do have the "imitation thing" down perfectly, like when I sing to songs on mp3 or whatever and hit the note perfectly, 98 out of 100 anyways, but the second I'm trying to sing without any song in the background, I fall flat and sound horrible. What should I do? Is it a problem with how I sound to myself without the background singing or is it a technical problem? Because that transition going from singing "in a group", which I'm really good at, to singing "solo" is really bugging me...

  • @jyi468
    @jyi468 6 лет назад

    I don't consider myself gifted but these qualities (mimicry, imitation) he mentioned can be learned. I can't quite do it as well as amazing singers but I can do it to some degree after practicing singing on my own for years.
    I think the key here is an awareness of how your exactly how your voice sounds and how you can change the quality of your tone using that awareness. The talented singers somehow picked up this ability a long time back and can now do it effortlessly.
    When he says imitate, it is not just pitch. It is the vocal quality itself. Of course there are limitations due to the fact that everyone's voice is different but the basic idea remains.
    Say for example, you take a song from a singer with a similar vocal range to you. Even if you can hit it note for note, are you singing it similarly? Taking it to the furthest degree, can you do an impersonation of their voice while singing the song?
    Think about it, if you could do a perfect Freddie Mercury impersonation singing his songs, so much so that people think it's actually him, then you're an amazing singer (albeit exactly nearly identical to Freddie mercury).

    Also, I can always hear songs clearly in my head, but cannot sing it right without it also playing or more practice (I can sing the POTO main song without 'help music' actually), but WHEN it plays at the same time, like on the radio, I can pretty easily follow it along, and mostly I turn it down very low, so I got a guide when I'm lost but am not constantly 'sung over' by the radio. The weird thing is that I can copy all notes easily, but still make mistakes if someone asks me if it goes up/down

  • @BeylaKaythin
    @BeylaKaythin 11 лет назад +1

    It's weird actually, I've NEVER considered myself a gifted or even good singer, but I can so easily immitate songs I hear on the radio, etc. some I can sing in the right notes without 'help', but when it plays on the background I always hit the right notes (if they're in my range, of course) almost effortlessly. Maybe it's my self esteem I need to work on, not my singing... but when I was a kid they once told me I sounded like a dying crow, and since then I've never sung in public again...

    Would you recommend singing in to a mic with headphones on to train one's own voice? I find my problem is that when I sing I can't actually hear what I sound like, it's always more bassy in my head and smoother. Why is that? I don't know maybe it's a bit of delusion, but I think when I can actually hear myself on a PA system I can respond and adjust my voice better.

    People often use the words "talent" and "gift" to mean the same thing, and they use the word "skill" to describe the ability that was learned and trained.

    Also, what I wanted to say is that if I'm in a choir or ensemble, and sit next to someone who's singing style or technique is not the most comfortable way or the most perfect sounding for me personally to sing, I immidiately sound terrible. Is there any way to think or act in terms of your vocal chords or muscles in the throat that will shut out the "wrong way" for you to sing or is it just to focus on yourself (which I find hard sometimes) and leave every other voice out?

    I haven't had any vocal training, etc. and always thought I was bad at music (because my parents, etc. didn't like me singing, etc.), though now I'm starting to wonder whether that was even true.
    On a scale from 1 to 10, how difficult is the Phantom of the Opera main song to sing? (with and without vocalization on the end, and with singing both Christine and Phantom) as though it's not as rich as the original of course, I can sing it pretty well. (all notes correct, and pretty nice sounding)

    I don't know whether or not I'm a "gifted" singer. But I would like to tackle this problem: My voice "cracks" when I alternate between head voice and chest voice. Can someeone tell me what causes that? I'm a 19 year old girl, by the way. Does age have an influence?

    I would add the crucial factor 'timing'. You said it in other words, but I have noticed as a 'KJ' this lines up with your fascinating point. :D

    @mradaChris I have that gift. I am able to harmonize on every songs that I hear, then I sing with them and I blend really well lol. It's a gift from God.

    Are you talking about tone production or the intonation please? What exactly are you talking about?

    I'm 18, but I seem to have finished my voice mutation very recently (or maybe I haven't yet). Many people tell me that I have an interesting voice, but cannot use it's full potential cause of no technical knowledge on how to sing. Can I still learn how to sing properly, or is it too late for me? As a child and early teen, I've often been told that I sing well. Now I can't manage air well enough, I have problems with changing the range and clarity of voice.
