GSP's and raising salinity 101: They will need a SG of 1.010 when they are larger than 1 inch. This amounts to about 8 dinnerspoons of salt per 10 liters (2.6 gal) of water. When raising salinity raise it by about 0.002/week. A tip of a knife of salt in a tank does not make brackish water; this is a recommended practice for all freshwater fish tanks though. Get a salinity meter; floating devices are available which will tell you the Specific Gravity (salt level) of the tank.
Your totally right about the salinity ^_^ I raised the lvl of salt a bit afterwards but they seemed happy at that time. Now they are still below 8 dinnerspoons per 10 liter but still enjoying their (little) tank. tried more salt but seemed to make them slow. all people dont like the same temperature aswell. Its always using the facts and adjusting them a bit. Thanx for the 101 ^_^ It's very usefull for the questions about how to raise salinity
mine did too. I thought the other one ate it until a few weeks later I found its shriveled, mummified carcass on my dresser behind my makeup case. It's so strange because there was never any smell.
kk thanks ; ) I think I will go for the Congo Spotted puffer or the Figure 8, which I have seen for sale at my LFS. Done lots on research on them already. Thanks again!
I got two who really like being togheter. They are sociable fish. Mine were so fond of eachother that when one died the other didn't wanna eat anymore and started to make sounds (sounding like a high pitched wistle or crying, but that could be my mind going crazy) Only thing to keep in mind is that they eat snails and some fish with special fins are build up with the same taste. so they might take a nip at fins from other fish. BUT they should be oke with their own species.
So cute. ^_^ I have the same kind. I've had them for some months now and I love them to death. My two fishies, Sauce and Cake (odd names, I know xD It's ment to be "Saucecake" ie. "Sasuke" from Naruto) love dancing in the front of the tank. They also love eating their blood worms, they're greedy little things. xP
awww!!! i want one!! >w< i remember i saw those in Japan in a crane game but i couldn't get it because we were just visiting :(( btw, where did you get your cute puffer fishes?? :3
As far as I know they will get along when they have enough room to get a personal space. They never fought in my aquarium though. They where kind of friendly towards eachother. Maybe it depends on the character of the individual fish ^_^
Yep. There is some special salt for sale that is good for seatanks, but I had no problems with seasalt. I made sure no chemicals are added ofcourse. And the amount of salt isn't really great. Just a tip of the knife for this whole small tank
The info I have about these heartbreakers is that they are brackish but the amount isn't clear for me. They need to eat something to chew on. If not then the teeth will grow till the mouth is shut. I've heard that some puffers use shells or cuttlebone, but I havent used it. Waterflow and filteration is inportant for every fish. Plants are for oxigen in water and all the other basicstuff every aquafreak will know. The best tip from me is to do your homework before buying and search fishforums
thank you for the advise actually today 2 of them started to eat and then right after the other 2 did I was happy! I new they were ok cause besides them not eating they are very active...how are your's doing
How are your Green Spotted Puffers doing? I am gonna be getting some of these soon for the first time. They are such cute fish. I just set up a 55 gallon aquarium dedicated exclusively for them! Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for me? =)
They were sold as fresh water puffers. When they get older they will like more salt so The tank you see is little brackish. not much but just a little. I heard that they will feel better. But sadly cant ask them myself.
Hard Water - Hard water is just the opposite of soft water. It is water that has a high mineral content, and as a result tends to be more alkaline. The disolved minerals that make the water hard could be important for nutrition if your info is correct.
Nice puffers...I just got 4 pea headed puffers yesterday they are so small I tired feeding them bloodworms like they told me to but they dont seem interested any suggestions? I was thinking maybe brime shrimp
@ people saying these (GSP's / Tetraodon Nigroviridis) fish will go in fresh water: YOU ARE WRONG! they spawn in fresh but need brackish to survive!! all baby specimens of 1 inch and under will survive in fresh for a while but will die if not moved to brackish. brackish water = water with some salt added, GSP's need a SG of 1.010 or higher when mature(2-6inches) but will do better in marine conditions when kept in captivity. Nice video btw, and good info! Add that they need 30gal/120L per fish
i used to have a figure eight puffer in my brackish tank i read somewhere actually a few different places that the spotted puffers dont do wll in brackish water are they still alive
LOL... AS much as I want to tell you... I can't. recently I've been looking for it again for an animation I made for school, but had no luck. It is Hawaiian music but I cant remember who the artist is. If I find it again I'll mail you and post the title of the song and artist. And ofcourse thanx for loving it ^_^
I put a little salt in the tank but didnt'know how much they needed so i guess the water was more fresh than brakish. I don't know the english name (I'm a dutch bloke) but the latin name is Tetraodon Nigroviridis and thank you for loving the vid :-P
um.... It is possible but I preferred to put them in a small tank for themself. Larger fish will probably work. But the are known for eating fins and i dont know if bigger fish will scare them more so they dont dare to eat those fins (as far as I had read the fins almost taste and smell the same as snales they eat.)
What water did you keep yours in, they look like green puffers they prefer brackish water. Although I could be wrong they could be Spotted Congo Puffers, hmmm lemme serch up the scientific name then.... Great vid though! thanks for sharing :D
@TheAsianpro Fresh or salt... Biggest question in here. In the comments is debated wich is the best. I myself think little brakish (little salt) made mine most happy. Officially they live in salty or brakish water. But when caught they are put in fresh water tanks for sale most of the time. If you buy them they are used sort of addapted to fresh. But still Ithink a little bit home feeling would be best for them. They are super big. kiddin' they are about 5 cm in lenght
lol he is the DIVA of the tank so it is an aquatic salamander? I fed my fish some brime shrip the aquirum I go to he gave me a free bag 2 of the puffers ate the other 2 seemed not interested....lol...I really wanted a bigger one but the guy said they are alittle bit more aggrasive and may pick on the smaller one's
In the video they are eating clammeat. The frozen clammeat I can buy at local fishstore. I really dont know what dwarf puffers eat but I think ( guess) they will like it. Other people put stuff their puffers eat in responses. So grab something to drink and scroll trough all responses or google the dwarf puffers. If more people say they eat it its probably the good stuff. GL searching and enjoy the puffers ^_^
The brackish part I luckily found out on the internet on time. But sadly I have to inform you all that those two cute fishies are no more. The didn't want to eat anymore. The clamfood went in not everytime. Friends didn't knew what was wrong either. After I move to my new appartment I'll start a bigger tank for those puffers. Oh and a strange thing... The last two months the started to make high frequency noise. It sounded realy sad. If anyone knows why. Please respond. THANX
GRATZ. Im happy for you ^_^ uhm... how mine are doing.... Hopefully well in fish heaven. Sadly they died a while ago. I haven't got a good sizable room for a good aquarium for them so Im waiting Till i got a new house with room for these cuty's Now I only have a nice size aquarium with guppy's, neon tetra's and a couple of other easy fish that only care if they are fed on daily base. And 3 weaks ago my girl came home with a salamander she fell in love with.
Brackish is a little bit salty water. but not salt water like sea water. There eating Clam-meat (shredded mussel) in my film. As I have heard and read that should be the only thing they eat. Clam meat or other snails in the aquarium... So If you got lots of little snails they will slowly dissapear with these fish. Sadly the fins of fish are tasting the same as the snails. So be carefull!! DID they bite :O they can but mine cuddled when I put my hand in ^_^
What TrueSplash said is true. Not all have to have brakish water. I use normal kitchen salt to make is brakish. I know not the good way but the Aquarium salt is to expensive for this little tank and with a small bag from the store I have enough for a life time. Try without salt first and if they are unhappy then add a little bit of salt in a bucket of water when refreshing the water. Enjoy and good luck !!!
Next time when I'll buy a new couple (after moving) I'll ask you for some tips and other information. 'Cause everything I've heard from the petstore was as false as it could be. My Girlfriend and I are so in love with this Cute little fishes that we really really really want to have them.
Hey thanx for the compliment ^_^ Normaly a High buget film Like 'Finding Nemo' is needed for such a response. For firsthand tips about what you'll need. I'll say searhe the web for info. Don't trust one person ( yeah me too) . Second. Every person is diferent. so is every fish. SO what for worked for me could be useless for someone else.
It can also be that they are still a little bit scared. New home and strange surroundings make some fish a little scared to eat food. Normally that will ease away in a couple of days. I try too avoid being close the first week and keep the aquarium the same so they relax. I got the same problem with a salamander. didn't eat for 9 days and now he is comin to me when i open the aquarium. My puffers had no problem with eating, but no fish has the same personallity. try the different food and GL

Your Betta looks pretty cool and relaxed.
I Love its color!!!
I love the first puffer, he looks so happy and sweet. Congrats on your happy little puffers......:)
What an informative little cutie ^-^ I want all the fish! Aaah! They're so cute :3
just wanna say these little uns are cute
but that tank is the best i've ever seen... it's perfect for them you know exactly how to treat them :)
'puffing' isn't a good thing.
They only 'puff' when they are scared or need to defend themselves.
thats the cutest fish ever! everday i would watch it! and i will feel happy for the rest of the day
i like your set up! and puffer fish :D

your fish is really enjoy at swimming the huge tank ^_^ sooo relax
Omg they are so cute!!!! I want one :) They look so darn cute and huggable :D Too bad they fishies :( I would totally give em a hug ^_^

Nice little puffer.
They are so chubby and cute do they live well with goldfish, guppies, red tailed tetras, pleco, and a tiger barb?
They can live in salt, fresh, or brackish water, but brackish is healthiest.

@jawproduction Was he getting enough to chew on (snails). If they don't chew their beaks overgrow and they starve. IT happened to mine along time ago.
they need more than a heater and 3 gallons! its a brackish water fish which is a combination of salt and fresh water, these are difficult fish to keep
awww sooo cuteee!!!
I put a little salt in the tank but didnt'know how much they needed so i guess the water was more fresh than brakish. I don't know the english name (I'm a dutch bloke) but the latin name is Tetraodon Nigroviridis

Tetraodon nigroviridis.
should be in full marine conditions once it gets to about 2in long. i have 2 in my mixed reef tank
you really know how to take care of your puffers!!
I can tell because there stomachs are white!!

Uhm... was two days out of the petshop, but I really don't know when they were born. guessing by the size they weren't baby's anymore (size 1-2 cm)
Right now he's asleep.
So maybe tomorrow if he wants to be seen.
He's a dramaqueen ^_^

@jawproduction so how long can they live in fresh water ?????? this is a rlly importint question for me so really please reply !!!!!!!
@babyback210 did someone @ your plae watch free willy? Maybe the puffer got the idea from the movie? ^_^
GRATZ. Im happy for you ^_^

lol the buttons erase and reply are to close. Can happen :P
BTW nice size shrimp. Would even do good in restaurants I think ^_^
What do you feed them regularly?
@dovla935 try putting them in brackish water- they tend to do the best in it.
what did u feed it? and do you feed them snails often?
Next time when I'll buy a new couple (after moving) I'll ask you for some tips and other information. 'Cause everything I've heard from the petstore was as false as it could be.
My Girlfriend and I are so in love with this Cute little fishes that we really really really want to have them.
do these fish need heaters? can i out one in a 3 gallon with a gournani fish
there are some puffers that can live in freshwater
I love this one too :)
can u mince up prawns and give it to them?
Hey thanx for the compliment ^_^
Normaly a High buget film Like 'Finding Nemo' is needed for such a response.

I hate puffers now because one of mine jumped out of the tank!! Luckily I was standing there to save it...
@jawproduction not true thats a green spotted puffer they can get 6-7 inches.
aww now i want a baby puffer fish :3
i want one but im not sure if i should keep it in a pure freshwater tank...........i want to keep it wid my goldfishes
What's suitable temperate for them?
QUESTION :
are they poisonous if other fish eat them?
what temperature d they like?
are they poisonous?
i wanna put one in my turtle tank but i know its tiny but im sure he will be ok with plenty of hiding spots but i wanna know if its poisonous
@RAndomJboy no, they need full salt water as adults and anyway, they would nip at your goldfish until they kill it.
in 1 week or 2 i am going to get a puffer are they going to kill eacother if putted together ?
I love this video haha
i caught a Mr. puff at hobart beach at eatons neck , ny
@SMCUBEKOREAN all I basically know about them is told by 'poema' in the video. For mobie viewers: if the pop up info isnt showing try again on computer when you wantmore info ^_^
my puffer just completely ate my blk mour goldfish
are they fresh water? and were did you get them?
do the two get along i thought they fought each other when there was two
fresh or salt ? and how big do they get ?
plz reply
that is appropriate music
im considering the idea of getting one but all the ones i see are small i heard they get to six inches is it tru or i heard wrong
@RAndomJboy Bad idea - they'll prob attack your golds to the point where their injuries may actually kill them..... if they're huge you may have a chance in a large planted tank but I don't know I wouldn't try it...
these are my favourite puffer fish
They are brakish. when they are grown up it will change a little.
I live in Holland ( Europe) and there are Fishstores that have them nearby.
If you want them ask your fishstore to order them. They can do that.
But read a lot how to keep them happy and healthy
Thanx ^_^ Good to hear that.
But im not completely happy. I want them to have more space. But to let that happen I need more space first :P
I heard the best was to feed them once in 2 or 3 days. So thats how i fed them.
i want one but don't know where to get it.
What are their main diet
