Your puffer is GORGEOUS! I really want a green spotted puff, but sadly I don't have the time for a brackish/full salt tank, so one dwarf puff is all I can manage right now.
I've heard they are born in brackish, and stay in brackish. I've also read somewhere that there are two species of green spotted puffers - Tetraodon fluviatilis, and negroviridis. When I was a kid, they used to mix these species up in books. I think they have it straightened out now - I think most of the fish in the pet trade are negroviridis. Not sure if they are fully marine (see wikipedia, can't attach link, look up Tetraodon nigroviridis), but 55 gallons, 6 inches seem correct.
To answer people's questions, this puffer was kept in my desk at work in a 10 gallon tank. 10 gallon tanks are too small for this species of fish. Feed these puffers a variety of foods, but the most important part is to feed them live, small snails. I tried feeding it some live minnows, but it couldn't catch them and the minnows ended up harassing the puffer later. Don't try to "puff" your puffer. They can be aggressive to other fish. Keep them in brackish water.
is this guy living in brackish water? what tank size would you suggest for just one? i have a ten gallon lying around and your little guy has inspired me to buy 1 and feed him snails!
@MrGman0909 Mine was about 3 inches long, I think. I had it in a 10 gallon. Try keeping it in a 15, see if the water quality deteriorates quickly, or if it just seems unhealthy or unhappy before thinking it is too small. I think a full grown in a 10 gallon might be too cramped.
@professorxox Could be. Some puffers have toxins in their body. I'm not sure if green spotted puffers have toxins or not, but that could be the reason.
They'll eat anything meaty, but puffers need hard-shelled animals to eat to wear down their teeth. Not sure how exactly they will die if they don't eat hard shelled creatures, but that is what I read in a few places. You can buy snails from eBay, in America, when the weather is warmer. They are pretty easy to breed.
A green spotted puffer is NOT a freshwater puffer. It lives very shortly in freshwater and as it heads to the ocean it lives in brackish until it becomes an adult. Then it lives in full marine. Also Green spotted puffers can get to be 6 inches or more and require a minimum of 55 gallons for territory.
There are freshwater puffers. I forget the names, but they are around. There is one species that is really small, I think from South America. I would not keep it in a puffer in a 3 gallon tank.
i ALWAYS wanted this fish lol their so cute my mom wont let me get some.may i ask is it dangerous to handle them i mean comon their just little puffers not huge ones right.
No, these puffers reach about six inches in length. The smallest, and I mean the absolute smallest tank for a GSP at maximum size is 20 gallons. That is really pushing it. I have mine in a 36 gallon. 30 gallons is even seen as only adequate for a GSP all alone!
mine was kept at 1.026 in a 180 gal 680 liters including the sump befor LR mixed reef tank about but that may be why died after only 6 years heard they can live for 10 or more. he never bother any other fish but they always moved out of his way when he went to another part of the tank.
@aquariumStudios1 hi...i dont see my puffy eat..i have had him for about two weeks...i give him tropical fish flakes...are they supposed to eat that or something else? :( help please
Really fucking nice mate, The colours are beautifull, and its really nice quality! Because of this movie im gonna buy a bigger tank, and a Gsp! Whats your salt level? I want to keep it 6 months in fresh water, then every 2 weeks a raise of 0.002, so i start with 1.000, after 2 weeks to 1,002, is this correct?
dwarf puffers are freshwater and some more species. But the gsp's should be converted to high end brackish when they start to grow and will eventually enjoy Salt water best. I have mine at a Sg of 1.010 and still rising by adding more salt gradually.
@smallyellowdevil gsp needs to be housed in nothing less than 30 gallons per puffer and also need brackish water to start after they are about a year old they need full marine setup but you have to step up the gravity by no more than .2 points every two weeks in order to live a good healthy life an they also need to be filterd by atleast double for example if you have a 100 gallon tank you should at least have a filter that does about 400 gallons an hour
@boltswagg while I was transporting my GSP from one tank to another and I scooped him into a cup (I don't like using nets) he actually jumped right out of the cup and back into the tank! it was a tall cup too! I was sure to hold my hand over him next time.
well, is urs pet green puffer still alive? I had brought green puffers 5 times as my pets but they r really very difficult to keep them grow to adult...... they r all dead now.... but my Afican fishes never dead and still alive about already 1 year
Maybe. Are you referring to the "South American" comment? I don't remember; I am not as much into the aquarium hobby as I used to be. Don't have the time. I miss it though.
@paulaxa1 People commonly are misinformed about the water for these fish. While they can live in freshwater when they're very small once they reach about 1.5" you want to start bringing them to brackish water (s.g. of about 1.008-1.0016) and from their around 4.5" you want to raise their s.g to 1.016-1.022 ( or full on marine conditions ) ( If anyone would like to know more about them feel free to ask me in pm i'll link you to the site where i got my information. )
No, I knew. This was for an aquarium at work. The original idea was to keep it there initially, and get a bigger aquarium, but I never had the chance. That's why I don't keep fish now. I don't have the time to take care of them properly.
@eedee91 To answer all your comments that you wrote eedee91, it doesn't take long. I would estimate it at less than 2 weeks for a snail to mate, lay eggs, and the eggs to hatch.
my puffers don't really like snails-I got some once for them and they wouldn't eat them and it smelled up my tank once they killed them. They prefer ghost shrimp. I had two puffers in a 10 gallon and they started getting vicious with each other every time I fed them..Got a 40 gallon and they are wayyy happier now.
this particular fish lives in brackish(freshwater/saltwater mix) water and will attack all crustacians and other smaller fish. its hard to get them to eat dried food(shrimp) but they will eat fresh shrimp and crustacians(snail, hermits, etc)
i just bought a green spotted puffer today and 2 seconds after i put it into my tank it ripped the snail out of its shell and started eating it i didnt know it eats snails
@boltswagg mine died.... i almost cried because it was so friendly.. one time i looked at the tank and didn't greet me like it always did.. it jumped out :(
only pet store close to me that gives snails away sell them at $1 per four...its getting freaking expensive...anybody have any tips on breeding feeder ramshorn snails?
6 years is still a decent life for this species of fish. I'm sure 10 years is the exception, not the rule. I've read 5 years. You probably did a good job taking care of your fish.
@kenocartel You can buy snails from eBay. I thought they were cheap, but looking at the price you paid (1$ for four), I think I may have gotten ripped off.
Where can i buy snails this small i bought them a crab thats like 1in and there 2 ins big i got 2:) and they attacked them once and now there just ignoring him
I wouldn't keep most fish in a 3 gallon. That's way too small. I would suggest you google around for help on diet and freshwater species. But I fed mine live snails, dried shrimp/krill and frozen worms (rarely).
Those other fish wont survive for long, just get the puffers :) and it may work in a 36 if you over filter and have a lot of line of sight to chop up the tank for each one to stop the aggression. Best fish i have ever gotten, they love to beg for food, and they instantly greet you at the tank when you move towards them. love mine to death
You are keeping this poor fish in a tank that is way too small. You need at LEAST 30 gallons for ONE green spotted puffer. Do your research before buying an animal and giving it a life it deserves.
@smallyellowdevil How long have you had this puffer for it to grow that big? btw lovely puffer, looks really healthy.
Your puffer is GORGEOUS! I really want a green spotted puff, but sadly I don't have the time for a brackish/full salt tank, so one dwarf puff is all I can manage right now.
Very cute! I like the markings on its head, very unique. My two gsps say hi to yours :)
i like the fact the he keeps looking at you while he try to eat! its so cute and funny! btw i have gsp's too!
Beautiful GSP. Probably the best looking one I've seen on video.
Beautiful fishy! and really nice quality video. My puffy is only a couple of inches long, I can't wait for her to grow up.
To answer people's questions, this puffer was kept in my desk at work in a 10 gallon tank. 10 gallon tanks are too small for this species of fish. such a cute puffer!
@professorxox
Could be. Some puffers have toxins in their body. I'm not sure if green spotted puffers have toxins or not, but that could be the reason.
are they hard to take care of? and where do you get them?
They'll eat anything meaty, but puffers need hard-shelled animals to eat to wear down their teeth. Not sure how exactly they will die if they don't eat hard shelled creatures, but that is what I read in a few places.
You can buy snails from eBay, in America, when the weather is warmer. They are pretty easy to breed.
do these fish go fine in fresh water though?
i keep reading and hearing different things.
i've had mine in freshwater for about 2 days now.
10 gallons - I guess around 37.8 liters? I've heard that they need larger tanks.
A green spotted puffer is NOT a freshwater puffer. It lives very shortly in freshwater and as it heads to the ocean it lives in brackish until it becomes an adult. Then it lives in full marine. Also Green spotted puffers can get to be 6 inches or more and require a minimum of 55 gallons for territory.
thats a gorgeous puffer
@boltswagg Not really. I've seen them jump out a bit, but unless they are really stressed out, they won't do it.
Beautiful fish. Love the color. I have 2, could watch 'em play all day.
experts say that a full grown is about 7 in. and needs a 25 to 30 to have an ideal lifespan. 15 or 20 will usually be fine however.
There are freshwater puffers. I forget the names, but they are around. There is one species that is really small, I think from South America.
I would not keep it in a puffer in a 3 gallon tank.
i ALWAYS wanted this fish lol their so cute my mom wont let me get some.may i ask is it dangerous to handle them i mean comon their just little puffers not huge ones right.
so cute i love the way they swim :3 like little balloons !!! lol
How long does it take for them to get to 6 inches? Mine is in a 30 gallon with just a few bumblebee gobies now but he is only 1.5 inches.
@Aerosmithfan507
There are a few. The only one I am aware of is called the Amazon puffer and they are small.
@smallyellowdevil then what is the fresh water puffer fish called? - and yes. There IS a freshwater puffer fish
hey question what kind of bottom are you using for you GSP? and is your water brackish or full marine? Thank You
@MrJaye66 Sadly, it passed away. But I bought it at a pretty good pet store in New York's Chinatown, and it was already this size.
No, these puffers reach about six inches in length. The smallest, and I mean the absolute smallest tank for a GSP at maximum size is 20 gallons. That is really pushing it. I have mine in a 36 gallon. 30 gallons is even seen as only adequate for a GSP all alone!
could i keep 2 figure 8 puffers in a 20 gallon long tank?
@paulaxa1 30 gallons and has a specific gravity over ~1.008
Where you biting a tortilla chip every time the puffer touched the snail?
mine was kept at 1.026 in a 180 gal 680 liters including the sump befor LR mixed reef tank about but that may be why died after only 6 years heard they can live for 10 or more. he never bother any other fish but they always moved out of his way when he went to another part of the tank.
I love the color of your pufferfish! its nice! I learned something new thing too! I didnt know they can eat snails! kool! XD
@aquariumStudios1 hi...i dont see my puffy eat..i have had him for about two weeks...i give him tropical fish flakes...are they supposed to eat that or something else? :( help please
what all would i need to get a gsp? do they need a community? what do they eat? how big of a tank should i get?
can a green spoted puffer fish live in a 20 lt tank? can this thing live in fresh water?
Yeah they are different. These are brackish to full marine puffers and they are very aggressive towards other tank mates. They grow like 6'2" or 17cm.
at :16 hes like 'Well hello there :D'
would a 15 gallon tank be big enough for just 1 puffer?
@DeniseRoss234
I got mine from ebay, and then bred them in a small separate tank. In proper settings, in two weeks, you'll have tons of baby snails.
Where can I get little snails like that?
@smallyellowdevil ah- i live in canada and there is one called (its a pretty obvious name) the Fresh water puffer fish
lol at first i was thinking why was everybody talking about a GPS? but i was like oh they mean...OH!
do you need brackish water for a puffer
these guys live in Freshwater, right?
@chibixcandy GPS? In a fishtank? What?
dwarf puffers are freshwater and some more species.
But the gsp's should be converted to high end brackish when they start to grow and will eventually enjoy Salt water best.
I have mine at a Sg of 1.010 and still rising by adding more salt gradually.
How often do you feed your fish
@smallyellowdevil gsp needs to be housed in nothing less than 30 gallons per puffer and also need brackish water to start after they are about a year old they need full marine setup but you have to step up the gravity by no more than .2 points every two weeks in order to live a good healthy life an they also need to be filterd by atleast double for example if you have a 100 gallon tank you should at least have a filter that does about 400 gallons an hour
Would 35 gal be okay?
@boltswagg while I was transporting my GSP from one tank to another and I scooped him into a cup (I don't like using nets) he actually jumped right out of the cup and back into the tank! it was a tall cup too! I was sure to hold my hand over him next time.
Are those toxic ?
i did have one..how much can he be big?
how many litres does your tank have ???
does this fish jump out the water ???????????? PLEASE ANSWER
well, is urs pet green puffer still alive? I had brought green puffers 5 times as my pets but they r really very difficult to keep them grow to adult...... they r all dead now.... but my Afican fishes never dead and still alive about already 1 year

@MsVisionInBlack
I used a Samsung Digimax L85.
Can u adopt that?
Mine does not really like worms too much either.
@paulaxa1 People commonly are misinformed about the water for these fish. Can u put puffers with african cichlids?
@kbee951
You are supposed to feed them food with hard shells, like crabs and snails. Small freshwater crabs are expensive, but snails are not.
ok i know is going to sound stupid but do this fish puff up?
@boltswagg mine died.... i almost cried because it was so friendly.. one time i looked at the tank and didn't greet me like it always did.. it jumped out :(

@paulaxa1
I would recommend that you didn't put it in a freshwater tank.
I use Instant ocean. I don't do anything special to get its color like that - I guess it is just genetics.
@kenocartel
You can buy snails from eBay. I thought they were cheap, but looking at the price you paid (1$ for four), I think I may have gotten ripped off.
My green spotted puffer bit me today when i was measuring the the SG of the water.
lol it is funny how their fins move very fast
I would recommend putting them in brackish water.
@Aerosmithfan507 true "dwarf"puffers are 100% freshwater
Where can i buy snails this small i bought them a crab thats like 1in and there 2 ins big i got 2:) and they attacked them once and now there just ignoring him

Go, Puffer!
@cleerin1 I posted a video of my snail colony before.
nice video!!!!🐡🐡🐡🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
@kbee951 is it only eats that and no hard stuff you gonna have to cut his teeth every 6 month or you wont have a puffer anymore
lol nice puffer i have one too same size kinda well no mine a little smaller and also mine fat like urs he looks happy wit u GJ!
Köszönöm!
Mine is so small! But I got it yesterday
@theprankster5000 Yes
thx small
I read 6 inches.

I breed my own snails. I have videos uploaded of the snail colony tanks. Very easy to breed.
I would say about two inches.
