Line Breeding Or Inbreeding??

  • There are so many questions that come up when you are trying to breed for improvement in your herd. This is never a quick, simple answer. It takes a lot of years to learn what a quality goat should be and where you want your herd to improve. This video breaks down the bloodlines of our goats and how keep our lines close. AKA, line breeding. We started with some really good foundation does and choose to carry that through our herd so we don't lose those great qualities. We call this line breeding. Don't mess up though, because then it is considered inbreeding.
    Welcome to the Blue Cactus Dairy Goat Ranch! We breed show quality Nigerian Dwarf Goats! We currently have a herd of 15 does and 4 bucks. Our herd is rotationally grazed on our 10 1/2 acre homestead in Arizona. We also raise chickens for eggs and meat and keep a large garden year round!
    On our channel we teach how we trim hooves, deworm, copper bolus, draw blood, milk shave, shave for show, compete in shows, milk test, breed, register, transport, assist in goat births, bottle feed babies, wean kids, how to milk, use a milk stand, make cheese, make homemade ice cream, make compost, grow vegetables, and have fun in mountains and creeks!
    Follow our adventures as we grow our Herd, our Food, and our Family!

    Crystal we here have just had another showing of “Little bits” labour. I feel for “Litt’ bit” inher labour but I also feel for you in that type of situation. It must be so hard on you. I think I understand YOUin these terribly tough times when you, who loves these darling animals so very much, sitting there with them, going through the hardest times of their darling lives. I was a midwife for quite a few years before I went back to general nursing and even when I had my 3rd baby I became VERY aware of the danger I saw myself in. I was in the midst of having a 9lb 9oz baby in a full-on breach. I think at one particular point in time we all realised the severity of my situation.
    You must be very aware of that type of moment at times. It is just a moment nobody says anything, it isn’t anything one person can voice but it is a very real moment of the severity of the situation and I’m sure you felt that with Little-bit that day.
    You are a very clear thinker and you were aware of how threatening that moment felt,
    Love ❤️ 💕 💗 you my dear friend on the other side of the world, you are very close and dear to me. If ever you need someone to chat to my email is “bobelle3@gmail.com.

    Hi Crystal! Good video, as usual. Y'know, I have a thing for colors, and I really like seeing how color traits move from dams and sires to kids. For example, Lucky has white patches at the base of his ears like his dam Lacy; and Merle has a white band around his chest like his sire Lucky. It will be very interesting to see the results of the upcoming breeding. I'm confident you'll have some beautiful, colorful kids! Y'all take good care --

    Oh the first face I see is Mr. Lucky. Crystal I’m learning the animals names. Oh Mayo is a doll. Abilene is pretty, Lucky makes some beautiful Does. Cami is smooth and pretty. Inbreeding in any mammal is not good idea. It weakens the bloodline and the animals ability to have healthy, confident offspring. Well Crystal is Iris eating table food? I know she loves those smells, my son did and used to open his mouth at 2 weeks old if I was holding him whiles I was eating. She is such a pretty happy baby. Well I will get out of here and do my blood test for my diabetes. You take care.

    Local (?) problem here in the Northeast with breeding exclusively to paperwork genetics. I've looked at so many goats for sale and their pedigrees. Does with grandparent champion milkers have turned out all sorts of Frankenstein kids that fail to bring forth the qualities of the line, if not just terrible goats prone to all sorts of maladies, which are again bred to more pedigrees...
    I turned down a number of pedigree goats that were purported to be excellent dairy goats per genetics.
    Is this something you'd consider touching on? What qualities do you decide to cull from breeding program?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  4 года назад +1

      I am in AZ. I have to say, paperwork does not make a goat! You can breed to exceptional goats and their genetics combined just dont make good kids! On the other side, you can have one kid from same parents that isnt that great and another that is exceptional. There is never a guarantee the breeding from two great goats with throw good offspring. Never look at just the pedigree. Although pedigree is VERY important, make sure to see the dam and sire. Udder pictures and evaluate the actual goat you are buying. Here is a video of the ADGA scorecard for traits that should be looked for in animals purchased and for improvement in your own herd ruclips.net/video/MiDspL5SWpQ/видео.html
      Hope that helps!

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  5 лет назад +1

      My absolute favorite doe is May. Then her daughter we retained, Mayo was so gorgeous when she freshened!! Looks just like her mama but larger teats. Mayo/Everest breeding was awesome. She just had 2 bucklings or I would have retained a doe. So so wide and perfect all around. I want to see if I have the same kids from May and Mayo paired with Everest. So I am most excited about those kids lol!

      Force them onto the milk stand and milk them every 12 hours. Give them a treat while there on the stand, such as a little chicken scratch but not to much. It will take awhile for them to come around. -Derek

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  5 лет назад +1

      Hahaha! I've always wondered why nobody's asked!. When he was a young, teenager buck he was along the fence with our older buck, Duke. They came into rut and he decided he was ready to show his strength. We didnt see it happen but pretty sure Duke bit it off when they were fighting. We never found the tip of his ear! Needless to say, we put boards up along the part of the fence that they could see each other and the fighting stopped. Boys get very serious during rut..

    How is a Doe's milk graded and who grades it. (What I mean is can the owner grade it or is it lab tested sorta deal?) Still learning about goats we plan to one day get Nigerian dwarfs as well. Also can you tell me, the breeders/farms you got your goats from?

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  4 года назад

      We dont sell our milk commercially so it isnt graded. I give it an A+++++ for taste though ;). Most of our goats are from our breedings but you can find their lines on our website if you are interested. Link in the description of the video.

    So many names 😂 starting to feel like that on our little farm. Isn’t it funny when choosing a name it really has to stick!!!
    We were told getting into goats, you can cross moms and son but not brother and sister?. It always confuses me lol!

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  4 года назад +1

      Hahaha! Never brother to sister. Start away from siblings for sure. We never breed daughter to father or mother to son either. Look for about 15% linebred percentage give or take. So many things to look at before line breeding though! Line breeding can quickly improve your herd or quickly destroy it!

    • @LifeasBekah
      @LifeasBekah 4 года назад

      Blue Cactus Dairy Goats good to know!!! Thank you!! We’re trying to figure out which avenue to go... breed wise. On all spectrum to be honest lol. We just love and enjoy them as it is! We have a ND who is registered and a champ and also a kiko boer buck... so big vs smaller 😁 I love them both so I don’t know what to do 🤣

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  4 года назад

      Hahha! I hear you! I love all the breeds. A goat is a goat. Buuutt.... not even!! They are all so different from breed to breed. Obviously, my favorite breed is Nigi. Just make sure to never breed a larger breed buck to a smaller breed doe. Kinkos are a wonderful multi purpose breed for milk and meat. Nigis are dairy and are tastey but dont get much meat compared to the breeds. So depends what your goals are.

      Blue Cactus Dairy Goats 🥰🥰 Thank you!! We’re not sure which we’re going to love more. I enjoy milking but haven’t got out there as much as I should! We would also like to try the meat but I fall in love with each baby we have 😂
