    Always remember too the ink plays a part. So If a nib is fine but writes too broad changing the ink can change the entire experience.

      Yes indeed. I had a Pilot VP in fine which I loved, but found it a bit heavy, so I bought A Decimo in fine.
      When I tested the Decimo after it arrived I inked it with Noodlers 54th Massachssetts.
      I was horrified with how broad it wrote. I wanted to send it back.
      The VP with Noodlers X Feather Black (the VP is the Matt Black version) wrote a beautiful fine line, while the new Decimo looked like a medium. I thought there was something wrong with the nib.
      Before sending it back I thought I had best try them both with the same inks. So I filled the VP with Noodlers 54th. Wow, it also sudddnly looked like a medium nib. I then tried the Decimo with X Feather Black and lo and behold it wrote a beautifully fine line exactly the same as the VP with that ink.
      I learned a valuable lesson!

      @@KarynaLovesToPlan Although fountain pen collection videos are my favorites, I have chosen not to make one. Seeing large collections of luxury items, like pens, is hurtful to some people (even my fountain pen friends) and can provoke a variety of negative feelings. With your relatively small collection of pens, I think most people watching your video will find it understandable and relatable. It wouldn’t be the same with my collection. I do enjoy showing my collection over video chats to people I know and would be happy to show my collection to you if you would like to see it in this manner. If you just want to see some of my pens, I do show some of them on my channel.

    What a fun video! I am definitely a collector, but I use multiple fountain pens during the week. Two fountain pens are used heavily daily. But I usually use a different fountain pen every day! I was sad you didn't like the Lamy Vista as it's one of my favorite everyday carry pens. I replaced the red bottom converter with a black bottom but the color never really bothered me. I find it fascinating that you're selling off pens you don't like. As a collector I want them all. My general goal is to have at least one pen of every brand. But I also collect handmade fountain pens as well. Thanks for sharing your pens and I look forward to more videos like these. I would love to see an ink video ❤ 😍 ❤

      The Lamy Vista is a really good pen - but I honestly don’t think I would reach for it as much now that I have my Sailor and Pilot VP. But then my mind changes on whether or not to sell it daily! 😂 I am more of a user than a collector - I would find it overwhelming having so many pens that I wasn’t using. I was like this with my HP sticker books too - I got rid of so many that I am now down to 1/5th of what I had back in May! This is what I love about the community - everyone is different and I love hearing about why someone is a collector and why your collection is the way it is!

    what a lovely collection, i so want to write something in ink this evening :}. thanks for sharing
    feedback is more like just the sound of the particular paper.. scratchiness is the the feel that the tip cuts into the paper fibers ever so slightly...
    -----------------------------------------------------
    fountain pens was all we used in communist europe schools, by 4th grade we were all experts in customizing and fixing fountain pens. first graders always had blue lips, the ink was kind of tasty :}
    - with enough usage, the scratchy ones dull out, i would say a few months of daily use.
    - very fine sand paper (like 2000grit) works extra fast, just a few light pressure words written on it would make it extra smooth.. we would use the classroom blackboards for this purpose or extra fine dulled-out nail files: write a work on the abrasive surface, test the smoothness, etc. :}
    - they also wear to fit the grip of the user, borrowing someone's well used pen would feel Extra scratchy, you;d have to find the proper angle it likes to write...

    My fountain pen journey also srted with a gift of a Cross Century in medium, that was also bit bold for my small handwriting. Its stunningly smooth nib however and its still one of my favourite pens on the right paper.
    I am now also collecting pens but am definitely a user. I choose a few pens every morning for the days notes.
    I also find that the paper is important and choose certain pens for different paper. I love to use different colors to highlight points in my notes, so keep a range of colors inked all the time.
    Thanks for sharing. I have been on the fence about getting a Sailor Pro Gear, but after your explanation I think I might just go for it.

      Yes the Cross has a beautiful nib and now that I understand fountain pens more, I appreciate this gorgeous pen! I am trying to get into a rhythm of what I have inked up for what. Not sure if I want to have a specific ink for a specific planner spread, or have something a bit more permanent. Still figuring it out but it is part of the fun process! And yes I love the Sailor Pro Gear Slim… will probably invest in the Pro Gear 21k shortly!

      @@KarynaLovesToPlan exactly what I am thinking. I see quite a few people I've spoken to use a particular pen and ink for a particular purpose. Like only using a particular combination in a particular notebook. I'm still experimenting with ink and pen combinations. Not to mention nib size between the different manufacturers or even a particular range.

    I love watching videos on pen collections. So my big question is, what is your collection now roughly 3 months later? Did you make any more purchases? I remember when I doubled my collection from 4 to 8 in one purchase, and I thought to myself, 'okay I think I went a bit overboard here. What will I do with 8 pens?' Now 43 pens later and counting (because I have not yet been able to sell a single pen), ....... , I don't know whether to sigh or rejoice. Now that you've caught the 'gold bug' it's going to get even crazier.
    I'm surprized that you found the Lamy scratchy. Lamy makes some of the smoothest nibs, especially the ubiquitous Lamy 2000. Pilot and Sailor make some great nibs, and if you are looking for smoothness, I might suggest Pelikan, Faber Castell, and Leonardo, just to name a few. I think you'll fall in love with Pelikan, and a larger Sailor pen. Good Luck, because from here as you stated you'll get inks, then you need the paper, and then comes storage. You're off to a great start!

    • @KarynaLovesToPlan
      @KarynaLovesToPlan  2 года назад +2

      I did make two more purchases since this video. I bought a white rose gold Sailor Pro Gear with a 21k nib (MF), and a Pilot Vanishing Point in Grey Rhodium with a fine nib. I've fallen back in love with the TWSBI Eco-T (with some tuning), and the Lamy Vista I've decided to keep (because it does have a smooth EF nib). So I currently have 9 - the Cross Botanica, Lamy Vista, TWSBI Eco-T, Pilot Kakuno Clear and Black, Pilot VP and Pilot Decimo, and Sailor Pro Gear and Sailor Pro Gear Slim. I'm trying to be very conscious of future pen purchases - my goal for 2022 is to get a special edition Pilot VP (if I like the colour), a special edition Sailor Pro Gear Slim, and possibly a Pilot Custom 75 and/or a TWSBI Mini in White Rose Gold. Inks are a whole other ball game. I went from loving the shimmering to now loving the shading inks. It's amazing how things change in such a short time!

      @@KarynaLovesToPlan I haven't been able to sell any pens as of yet. Every pen has a story, even an impulse buy, so there is definitely a piece of me in every pen I buy. The only pens we have in common are the Eco and Sailor. I have the Eco in 1.1 that I use as one of my testing pens for my ink journals. I have a Sailor 1911S with a Zoom nib. Not exactly the same as the PGs you have but similar. I have a Pilot Custom 74 with a SFM. It's a fantastic, fantastic pen. I think you might like a soft nib. It has a good bounce to it, and you can get line variation which helps with shading. When I buy Japanese pens, I really go for the unique nibs.
      I not much of a shimmer fan because it is hell to clean out, so I dip into shimmer, but shading is my favourite characteristic of an ink. I always want shading, and it helps that I prefer at least mediums nibs. This year I am looking at the Visconti HS Crystal Dream, and MB Around the world in 80 days. If by chance on the American sales I can pick up a Lamy 2000M and Pilot Custom 823 that would be great. Check out Pensachi if you've not heard of it. You'll get a greater Japanese selection than from N.American retailers.

      @@ironmic9244 I love the Sailor PG with the 21k nib. So smooth and I love the feedback. I wasn’t sure if I would but after getting the PG slim, the feedback is something I love about the writing experience. I feel like I am so early into my journey and as a minimalist at heart, I would rather sell the pens to someone who will use them versus me keep them and not use them. I am wanting to try a Pelikan and a Platinum, but I am also of the mindset of “I have pen brands I already love. Why do I need to try more?!” 😂 Especially since I went from 0 to 9 (would have been 12 but sold 3) pens in 2 months. I do love the gold nibs, and also appreciate the steel nibs. They each provide a different writing experience, especially when paired with specific inks!

      @@KarynaLovesToPlan You make an excellent point about knowing pen brands you already like. Looking back I sometimes feel should I have been more targeted, and going forward should I be more targeted? Nah! Diversification has always been a thing with me. Though it does creep into my mind sometimes. I don't have more than 1 pen of the same model, with the exception of the Sailor 1911. I have the Profit Jr. (called 1911 Compass), the Profit Fude de Mannen and the 1911S, but all 3 are really different. And you need more pens from other pen brands because everyone else is doing it. ☺

    Hi, liked your video. Using a FP is so personal, depends on the size of your hand ( comfort ) the size of your handwriting -in your writing samples, the only one i could read was the cross botanica.,the real medium.. i am a lefthanded person and i write big bold letters. Not as big as others I've seen but still big enough. I prefer broad nibs, because i like sheen and shading in my inks..
    -I'm sorry you did not appreciate the metropolitan. There must have been a problem with it. I have 3 and all wrote smooth and very well right out of the box. I don't post them ,and they are well balanced in my hand. I don't post most of my pens to avoid scratching them . I know I'm being nitpicking but i like to keep my pens pristine if possible.
    I also have a problem with the red in the demonstrators ,in my calligraphy pens i use convertors with a clear tip. Granted i got them from cheap pens that i gave away but switched the converters. Lamy is a propiatary converter so that didn't work ☹️
    I rotate my pens monthly, i use them to draw and i write a lot every day so the nibs need to be smooth . I do have favourites, my Conklin durograph rainbow is one i keep inked most of the year, but it's a big pen that fits well in my hand, and the nib is smooth. The diplomat aero is another one i love.
    I find we are a bit limited here in Canada, -I'm from Quebec - and buying from the states just gets too expensive once you add duty and taxes plus the exchange.....
    Well I'll stop here, i talk a lot, but since covid, i started writing more🤷‍♀️. Keep up your videos, it's fun to see and learn about someone else's perspective 👍

      Thank you for your comment! It is so interesting watching people's collections and their stories about what works for them and what doesn't. And it's great that there are so many different pens out there that suit so many different writing styles. Buying from the US can get expensive - I bought my Sailor from eBay and even with shipping and customs, ended up being cheaper than buying from any other shop in the US. I did manage to buy the Lamy converter that is black so hopefully that will help. I inked the Vista this week and using it with my work planner and I am loving it. I think the black converter will help it stay in my collection longer. Thanks for watching!

    A lot of people recommend Pilot Metropolitan for a beginners fountain pen. I needed do. It is not a pen I recommend ever. I don’t think it’s a good pen - it’s not balanced, it has a tendency to blurp. And I’ve had it turn a lot of people off from fountain pens which is a shame.
    Lamy makes nice pens but they are one of the most common brands to be counterfeited and sold on amazon so that the pen is not a Lamy but they are very well done so you can’t tell expect them nib will be crummy or not fit right etc. so it’s usually best to get a lamy from a reputable company. Additionally Lamy tests their nibs before shipping so they have to be flushed before first use or you’ll get hard starts from the residual ink in the nib. They do sell black ended converters. So you could snag one for your vista.
    Im not a kaweco sport ran. But they have other pens that are nice but it’s not a brand I buy for because I find others are just better for the price.
