Excellent info - and in case no one has already mentioned it, hummers like to perch on an ordinary metal wire hanger!
We put one upside down, attached to a post, and they like to perch on that! Prior to this discovery, I had purchased a store-bought little "swing" with a thicker bar, and they never once landed on it!

Hummers are the best entertainment! I get one male every year that thinks he owns the place! I’ve moved my feeders so he can only see one at a time. It’s been great!

Haha I have the same here but he’s become a welcome sight every year all the same! Also there is no wrong feeder, just some work a little better than others in my opinion. If you have feeders already they will still work. If that’s what you’re referring to as far as taking down feeders? Thanks for watching!!

@ Kevin - you're right. We took down the feeders for the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Swallows, etc. that we have up every year, from when the weather gets cold until the spring / summer, when they can find their own food, AND if we leave them up, they tend to use our swimming pool for a huge bird bath and also to keep their waste off of our pool edge. I put up more hummer feeders this year and it's been amazing! They are the BEST to watch! Soooooo pretty and stately, as they look so pleasantly relaxed while they rest on my Shepherd's Hooks and play in the bird bath. I have took track of the feeders in different areas, and it seems as though they're getting used to me. They are THE most amazing birds ever! So very amazing! I NEVER walk out the door if one or more is on the feeders. NOTHING is more important than watching my little friends take a break playing in the rain or just resting on the Shepherd's Hook. They're truly the MOST beautiful birds I've EVER seen in all of my life! We'd like to move out of the corporation limits and in to the country, but the next lady that lives in my house will have to PROMISE to take care of my hummers!!

I thought one was going to sit on my shoulder today when I was hanging a feeder. I was bending the hook on the feeder-while it was feeding. ❤️😁. It then landed on a hanging basket filled with a liner I shredded. They feed, then drop down about a foot and land in the basket to rest, then up they go for another snack. Yes, they remind us here if a feeder is in need of more nectar by hovering right in front of us... they are the sweetest things ever. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Every year hummingbirds would show up in springtime and come to the windows looking in. That's how we'd know to put the feeders out. This year, I put them out early... or so I thought. Within a few minutes one was on the feeder. I guess when they came to the windows they were really saying, "Hey, we're here and have been waiting patiently. What's the problem?!"

My best advice for getting hummers to visit your yard ( in eastern US) is plant lonicera sempervirens.
Native noninvasive honeysuckle that can be easily kept to the size of a small shrub.
It's flowers are long and narrow so most competitors can't get to the nectar and it blooms in sync with the migration times (both directions).
If you plant it they will come.
A lot will migrate on north but at least they will get close enough to notice your feeders and available nesting sites and available insect resources (baby food).
Add a small fountain so they can get water without landing and some will claim your yard for the summer.
I highly suspect a codependent relationship between rubies and lonicera sempervirens. Other common names are trumpet honeysuckle and coral honeysuckle.

I read an article that bees and wasps are attracted to the yellow centers of the feeding ports. The article recommended painting them red with non toxic paint or buying feeders without yellow centers. Another suggestion was to wipe peppermint oil on the feeding ports. It won't hurt the birds but bees don't like the peppermint odor.

Great video, I have 3 feeders around my yard and could surely use more. Good info about sun vs. shade and keeping the feeders clean. Hummers won't feed at a dirty feeder, and it's bad for them. NO RED NECTAR EVER, PLEASE!!! Sugar and water, 1:4 ratio. You don't have to boil it, just so the water's hot enough to dissolve the sugar. I use my teakettle to heat the water, sometimes I'll microwave the water in a large Pyrex measuring cup. Usually I make a 1:1 concentrate, keep that in the fridge in a jar or bottle, then dilute it as needed. It will keep for about 2 weeks; very helpful if you're maintaining multiple feeders.
If you're just starting to establish feeders, start with a small amount of nectar (1/2 - 1 cup or so) until you see visitors. Change it out often. As you get higher numbers of birds, you can increase the quantity of the nectar. I prefer the 'Best One' brand of glass jar feeder, it's available on Amazon. Easy to clean and easy to fill. Lasts a long time. My record is 6 birds feeding simultaneously! Amazing. I kept my feeders in shady trees (trimmed some branches away so I could watch them better), and one in front of my kitchen sink window. So fun!
Last tip I have: peppermint oil is a great ant/insect deterrent as well, safe for the birds and any pets you may have, but you have to reapply it every few days during heavier infestation periods. I would rub it around the base of my shepherd's hook, or to the hanging hook in the tree feeders. I repeatedly observed as ants would approach the oil area, then make a u-turn away from it. Amazing!
Happy hummingbird watching and feeding... They are such wonderful little creatures!!! ;-D

Under the sun umbrella's outside corner gives shade and enough space for the hummingbirds and the ants not climbing up there. There is nothing to climb up for them then.
I hung mine there after watching your video. The north side of the house and the north side of the umbrella provides the shade.
Then you can see the hummingbird and they get used to it if it is pointing towards the garden. Not close to the houses wall.
I keep my sun umbrella on the deck open on every good weather day and night.
When the hummingbirds need breakfast before I get up they can help themselfs.

Herbs in the Garden are great suppliers for them and us but Oregano bests them all. I allowed it to spread and the humming in my garden is back this year. Dude, you have the perfect ant deterrent built into your feeders. Pour some water into that crown on top of the feeder every day (it will evaporate in 2 days) and it creates a moat that the ants cant cross without drowning. I have been making them out of spray can tops for years and it works like a charm. Also, after the ants scout the feeder a few times and figure out its a dead end, they pretty much leave it alone for the rest of the summer.

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  5 лет назад +2

Ant moats don’t work in my area. We have tropical species of ants that cross streams so they pretty much laugh at my ant moats lol (yes I have tried anyways with the above described results). The ant bells work pretty good though

I have noticed a change this year with the hummingbird activity in my yard. It has decreased. Same conditions with only an exception to the weather. This was the year I was hoping to get them to drink from a test tube hand feeder, and they up and distanced themselves from my yard. Little ingrates!🤣 I hope things turn around, before summer is over, and we actually get a summer here in NJ!

They can be unpredictable at times. They usually migrate to the same general areas but can pick different territory locations within that area and you never really know. There a lot of factors that go into hummingbird numbers. The best you can do is make your yard the best hummingbird habitat you can. I’m actually working towards creating a designated hummingbird garden in the corner of my yard and making a hummingbird bird bath that is designed specifically for hummingbirds in hopes to bring in more. I get the same male year after year and a few females but I’m going to see if I can’t get some more. Hope your hummingbirds come back and wish you luck! Thanks for watching!

Vasoline on the bottom inch or two of the pole the hummingbird feeder is attached to will deter ants.

I’ve heard this a few times and gotta say it’s still one of my favorites! Haha I think it’s an honor that people say I sound like P Allen Smith. I hope that one day I can reach the success he has by just doing what he loves as I am just doing what I love and sharing it for people who enjoy it as well. Thanks for watching and I’ve enjoyed checking out your videos as well!

I get compared to Bob Ross.. but with bees instead of painting and that's fine with me. I wish you great success in the future!

I think P. Allen has a stronger drawl though

A simple water bath above and inline with the feeder. Available in places where feeders are sold. OR a homemade bath made from a 2 inch plastic water pipe cap and 2 cup hooks works perfectly.

Diatomaceous earth applied to the feeding pole deters ants. You might like the book, “Fastest Things on Wings” by Terry Masear who is licensed to rehabilitate hummingbirds.

Great video. My neighbor cut down a tree in his yard a couple of weeks ago and since then I have not seen the hummingbirds. Sounds strange but I have feeders all thru my yard and I can tell no hummingbirds are around. It is disturbing because Im thinking there were nests in that tree. We have erratic weather in Wisconsin but they have been coming for the 25 years I have had this house.

I noticed when a neighbor cut down 4 big big trees we heard no birds at all that year even it was in Fall.
It takes a while of recovery for the birds because the whole eco system is practically destroyed that the birds inhabitated. But they will come back.
Planting bushes and trees in Fall is a Great time to do, the birds find them in Spring and you set up a new Evi system for them to nest and have their spaces.
Planting some bushes helps them too, I noticed Dwarf Spruce Alberta had a lot of birds to nesting attracted this year. Evergreens are good spots for nesting too.
I had 3 to 4 nests this year and good bird houses that are build well and set up in a shadowy spot us a great support.
Make sure they are in a shady spot, because the chicks could get overheated and die otherwise.

What would you say should be the minimum distance between hummingbird and regular bird feeders? I have a huge oak tree, I have all bird feeders on one side which is plenty of room for the bigger birds, they don't really fly on the lower left side of the tree, could I put some there? It's about 15 feet apart, where I can hang it. I only have a little window feeder, and didn't get TOO many hummers. Wonder if this is why! It was on the same side as all the action!

Not sure if there’s really a minimum distance. You just want to put it far enough away that they find feel intimidated by all the larger birds. I’d say kind of play with it and see. It helps if there’s something blocking the line of sight between the feeders

I bought an ant moat that hangs above the feeder. It holds about a cup of water and it keeps the ants away. They have many types and designs from homemade to purchased. I like mine because it doesn't run out of water through evaporation. Some feeders have a very small ant moat but you would have to keep a close eye on it that it doesn't dry out. I have no ant problems. I have 3 feeders and they are thirsty little creatures! 🌷

You confirmed my suspicion that the reduction of my hummingbird population this year is due to the fact that I put a couple of finch feeders out in the yard for the first time ever which are also fun to watch, I figured that might be what was going on since my yard is now full of gold, blue and red/purple house finches, those feeders are a good 30 feet away from my hummingbird feeder which is usually on the deck but I guess that just isn't good enough for the hummingbirds apparently lol! Good info here, thanks and happy birding!

I only have two. Female and male. They hate each other as the male is the bully one and won't let her have a drink. If she lucky, she would have a chance to drink if the male not looking.

I have 4 feeders and my hummers empty them every 3 to 4 feeders. I also have a seed feeder for the other birds. I buy ant guards and they work great...they are pretty cheap.
