Learning to salsa dance in Cali Colombia

A month ago I moved to Cali Colombia to learn salsa. And little did I know there is a salsa mecca here of expats pursuing salsa all day everyday. In the neighborhood of San Antonio there is a mix of Caleños and gringos. In Cali it’s a nice balance not overly touristy and there are many opportunities to get to know the locals. Everyone has one thing on their mind and that is salsa salsa salsa! I came to Cali knowing one basic move that I had picked up in Ecuador but that was about it. I lived in a salsa school where I was awoken to the sound of 1,2,3,5,6,7 earlier than I had liked thanks to my nights out dancing and went to bed with the same count. There’s no escaping salsa in Cali and I think that’s why so many people fall in love with this city. It’s a vibrant city with not much to offer tourist in sites and attractions but the energy is contagious. This is truly the capital of salsa.
My dance teachers had such patience and made me believe that I to could become a salsera. I had classes several times a week and little by little I found myself improving. There were days that I had my ‘off’ days and would leave a class almost in tears and other days I’d feel high as a kite. It’s definitely a roller coaster of an experience diving into something that you’re not used to. My teachers were so fantastic and each one offered something new and different. I have so much to learn but now I’ve got a few steps behind my belt.
