Point isn’t flick specific, rather the style of player they try and mould you into. They take away your freedom to play and flair. Foden has flair and technical ability which seems to be against the norm for scouts
The people commenting only play FIFA and watch "SKILL HIGHLIGHTS 100" compilations. Just like the man said, "Footwork is to get you out of trouble, not get you into it". He is a professional for a reason. Modern tactics reduce space, there is more zonal marking. The Ronaldinhos of decades gone by had much more space to operate in due to more importance placed on man-marking.
I played semiprofissionally, and, like Ronaldinho, I'm also a brazilian who learned to play in the streets. I'm telling you, believe me, if the player doesn't already know that faking a pass is more effective then trying to flick the ball he would never be in the situation to be coached in the first place. Also, what you say about tactics is 100% correct, which is exactly why we should incentivize creativity. I see it, even here in Brazil (I have a daughter who plays small leagues), football is being standadardized by old men who never really played, like that bald englishman in the video, who clearly never did. We should be saying "Joga bonito" instead!
@@gilbertoneto6222standardized isn’t the word i’d use. i’d say adapting. defensively the game is more about team defense rather than individual. you’ll get a 1v1 here or there but for the most part a defender will have cover bcuz defense nowadays is more organized and team based. so i wouldn’t say it’s being standardized just people are adapting and playing smart. creativity can break these tactics but like this guy is showing be smarter in the way you’re pulling em off. don’t do a flick where a fake could be more effective. better to hold onto the ball and do your move than wow the crowd but get nowhere.

His little pull back and hip feint was hella smooth actually. Hazard and Messi would do that lil hip thing to change direction on the edge of the box all the time to lose their marker.
That's not actually what he said though. He said "...use skills to get you out of trouble, not to get you into trouble." Meaning, do skills that improve your situation, and don't do skills that make your situation worse, like dribbling from space into a crowded dead end. He didn't say anything about not using skills to get past players, because it's actually really useful if you can do that.

People bashing the coach but he's right. It was a bad decision. On top of that, the job of coach, at this age, is to make sure they understand the basics and fundamentals. Give them the IQ. Flair and creativity without the understanding of what to do and not to do is why you have these guys with ball skills better than the best players in the world, but are YTubers and low level pro players at best. It's useless without the proper knowledge to apply it.
Except he didn't explain a damn things about why it will never work, just declared it as fact. Which it fucking isn't. This is a poor level of coaching.
@@Nefariousbig except he did. He pointed out how there were 3 defenders right there where he moved the ball into. He didn't say it will never work. He pointed out why it was a bad decision in this situation bc it put him into trouble.
That lil hip feint, pullback into direction change was hella smooth tho. Efficient and beautiful. And he was teaching the right thing. The flair player will always be a flair player cus of unhinged confidence. You can't teach or take away that.
People are seeing the video and not listening to the guy! 😂😂 This isn't putting a stabiliser on the attacker at all! It's to help them avoid stupid decisions when the chance isn't on! There's a time and a place for direct play!
IQ separates top players more than ability does, skills should be used when the situation calls for it, not just to try the skill cos it's a cool skill and I can do it, this coach is the truth.
The coach is teaching him how to get creative without being predictable Chipping the ball above a defender to get past him, while being stationary, is a very slow and predictable move But what the coach is teaching there is somewhat the same move as what messi used to drop boateng
Exactly that's what people forget Messi and Hazard did this exact same move an endless amount of times to lose their marker on the edge of the box. This exact move was thier bread and butter. And Messi would play beautiful simple one twos to set himself up as well, where he would be unmarked in the box in a one v one with an unbalanced keeper.
he is not against flair. its the situation in which he tried to do the skill. the ball's not going anywhere, and he ain't beating any player with that. Like the coach said, "Footwork is to get you out of trouble, not to put you into it." You'll understand when seeing the best teams play.
The guys right...get out of trouble, unlock a defence etc ...doing flair in stupid areas doesnt win games Dinhos flair was mostly reserved for the attacking third ...where he was mostly staioned...not doing defensive work
He is more fucking experienced than you and knows what he's doing. He never said to not do skills or do footwork he just demonstrated what to do when.TO DO THE RIGHT SKILL TO get out of trouble and not get into it
Keep doing it bro. Watch videos of pro football players with good dribbling and knowledge of how to get out of tricky situations as a defender. I can recommend a couple: Kounde,Stones,Gvardiol
well there’s different moments to do and don’t dribble. i play as a LB but i’m a right footed player. my coach has me dribble when i’ve got a ton of space ahead or if there’s literally no other option aside from clearing. a little trust in dribbling defenders is good but not too much bcuz if you lose the ball it could be a chance.
He’s right. As a person who use to do skills a lot it’s only worth doing it if your gonna keep the ball. Doing a skill and losing the ball is the worst thing you can do 💯
Your comment shows why you have technically challenged players. The coach is teaching to use a believable feint, to allow the player to then dribble to the touchline. He's saying use technique. But, use your brain first
If you can find me a top pro, messi hell even Ronaldinho and ask them if that looping flick INTO three defenders is a good idea I don't think any would agree. Sure it might work very occasionally but as he demonstrated, a different flair might be a better option. Coach doesn't hate flair, he hates that flair in that one situation and he's bang on. Good flair players make good decisions about what to use where for the best chance at success.
He is right when he says, "Footwork is to get you out of trouble..not to put you into it!" Showboating with no end product is the worst kind. Even Ronaldinho did his magic to get out of tight spots...and it was why it had so much impact. Same for Hazard, Ibra, Marcelo etc.
that's the wrong mentality if you want to be good. Being a better player means playing consistently, doing the basic things right and making the best decision you can, not taking unnecessary risk, ESPECIALLY as a defender
Okay for those saying he is killing flair even in the golden era of football only few guys did flashy skills and the rest did precise dribbling between players not flicking over everyone. Plus he asked him as a defender who was going to get the pass and what he would do
Everyone needs to stop bitching about him producing limited playing style talents. Clearly he is showing it to a defender and you guys want him to do risky move in the box? He is teaching them the simple and basic of football, all the fancy stuffs comes after.
don’t be stupid. the game has evolved. nowadays defenses play more as a unit rather than individuals. a player’s individual dribbling ability and flair will come in a 1v1 but most of the game you will not encounter that. all the fancy tricks will get you out of that but doing simple fakes, feints and other moves will get you passed more than one defender. it’s about playing smart. mastering the basics and playing it simple will get you farther than just doing fancy tricks all the time.
Football has evolved, as does every sport over the decades. Doesn't mean there's no room for flair, it's about being efficient and not wasting movement. The flair is is needed as the coach says "to get you out of trouble".
This is why football is so boring these days. Footballers are manufactured now. They’re robots, this is why the euros so far has been boring, scoreless draws or one goal matches.
its boring cuz of lack of players that can beat 1v1 and lack of vision for thru balls... what's portrayed in this video is not killing the game, its just basics, if you're unsure on 1v1 atleast make sure the pass doesn't miss
The Euros have been boring due to the newer format. In 2016, they let another 12 teams join. So, inevitably, you get more weaker sides in the tournament, who have to play low risk, defensively organised, park the bus football because that's the only way they can compete with technically better teams.
@@sebfox2194 but france and england play definsive low risk football for so many years now we probably can't stop teams from trying to do that, the new generations have to develop good close ball controlling dribblers to break 'park the bus' defenses, OR we need an official rule from officials that prevents this type of defenses happening
The actual lesson here is that y'all in this comment section are dumb and can't see the brilliant and foundational principle he is teaching. Watch the video properly and maybe you'll learn. Y'all need to use your damn brains
I don't really see why everybody disagrees with this coach. Doing fancy tricks and showing off is fine when you're playing for fun with friends or something but in a proper football match even Messi, Neymar etc don't always try to humiliate 5 defenders when there are better options leading to goal.
He wasn't doing nth fancy, and he's saying it like it hasn't worked and it will never work. This is why footballers are not as creative as all and football is so boring
@@AceSushi94 No it can work but only when the situation calls for it and this guy indicated that by saying that footwork is to get you out of trouble not put you into it. The flick which the player tried might beat one defender but not three and if there are three defenders pressuring one man, chances are somebody else is free if you get your head up and switch play.
@@PixelAgent50 Yeah it is hard to get past them if they actually good. If there's 3 defenders who never played football then maybe you can get past them but unless you're Neymar getting past 3 quality defenders by doing fancy flicks is hard.
As a licensed coach I’ve got quite a few issues with this and some questions… Why has one of the players training got sunglasses on? Why are developing players being spoken to like that? Even if a developing player tries something, and *the coach* doesn’t feel it’s an appropriate decision for the situation, it’s not good imo to be telling them it’s “nonsense”, and intervening on a negative point to order him to demonstrate to the group his ‘nonsense’ attempt. This is very old school and one of the least effective ways to teach. Also coming down on someone, and drilling them on only making “safe passes”, needs consideration re the message and how it’s delivered. There’s an acknowledged issued in many countries about producing creative players. There is a better way to communicate what he wanted, the alternative options snd why, without making the player go into his shell on any future creativity by humiliating him on this attempt. I could go on.

you ain't thinking from the team's point of view, that's why. Winning is the most important thing in pro level football. Why are many youtubers and freestylers very good on the ball and have good skills but are not pro? It's because of overdependence on skills and ignoring the other things of football. we coach flair and individuality out of our kids here in the UK. This Northern Irish coach and this video just gives you a glimpse into this. We stifle their individual development. Look at the vast majority of forward players in the UK vs similar sized Latin America countries - look at their flair players
This is the exact reason we've lost allot of flair in our game, Coaches always teaching stick to basics, Do the easy pass, Players should be left to natural progression and just given solid physical and mental training.
This has nothing to do with "killing creativity" in football, as most people are suggesting. It's about teaching some REAL skills to a generation brought up on FIFA where there is no accountability for dicking around with the ball just to satisfy their egos
Preach! I love creative soccer. I love great footwork. I love trick passes and fakeouts. But! Each of these has to have a reason, a purpose, a way to advance the team's cause. To do it just to do it or to look flashy when you can make an otherwise viable pass or move is a waste of time, opportunity, and, often, possession of thte ball.
Coach is right: Master the basics BEFORE attempting the exciting showy moves. Messi is the best example of that. Messi has very little - probably none - flair and showy moves. But what he does have is an exceptional repertoire of EFFECTIVE moves for every situation.
Flair has its time and place. (Not so much in defense, defense is mostly clearing out of your own area) Dribble all you want up top, show what you’re made of
All those people saying he's killing creativity and all didn't listen, especially that last remark. He's not advocating the pass over the action. He's stressing the functionality off such actions and how to implement footwork. "Footwork is to get you out of trouble, not into".
You have to let personal flair flourish. Of course skill has to be measured and managed. Recognised football scouts have their place within the sport. But if the scouts have the wrong attitude. I don’t want any of it. You can keep it!
Same people saying football is dead because they're playing the safer option are the same people laughing at Anthony for spinning constantly and getting nowhere. Makes no sense 😂
Its more complicated then flair vs non flair. Its also about the situation in game e.g. - you are a defender, you have an exit pass and you start dancing with the ball, you know thats the wrong choice. - opposition defence is out of shape, you need to transition quickly, so driving with the ball and picking a quick pass so your team mate can get a shot off. If you dont the defence resets. - flair is key for centre.midfielders to be able to protect the ball under pressure and create dangerous situation. Also wide players for 1 vs 1's. Saying all that flair players are my favourites. E.g. Cole Palmer.
The hardest thing to defend against is speed and decisiveness. Fancy footwork often means the offensive player has to slow down, and for me as a defender, now I have you where I want you and can contain contain contain while my other backs cover your passing options. Come in with speed and don’t hesitate and it’s a helluva lot harder to defend and now the defense is scrambling as well. Unselfish play, smart passing and speed will tear apart any defense.
And in the afternoon they'll be going through the alphabet again to see if they are able to string it together. It's unreal how much work goes into trying to teach a footballer the very basics of the game. Much respect for the coach!!👏👏👏💪
It takes ages for ballers to practise their flar. That move is called the okocha flick, and it mostly catches players off guard, so a pass in that situation wouldn't be necessary since he can perform some skills to get past the defence and cut across
If you’re Northern Irish sure but if you’re Brazilian.. different story Seen a Brazilian kid fill in for my nephews u8s when he came on holiday.. Kid was like a mini Ronaldinho it was a blessing to watch him play
@Resprays Northern Ireland is the same country that produced George Best though , why have they never produced a player like that since the 60s while Brazil continued to produce players with similar talent consistently ?
He’s right as of you don’t possess the skill to pass a player then pass the ball! That’s what the Gaffer is saying & his footwork & body movement on the ball is marvelous for a older guy
I play left wing and recently had an agent tell me I’m a great player but at times I hold onto the ball a bit too long ; which I genuinely don’t believe I do. I respected what he said but I told him that that is something I’m not going to change about my game. If a club doesn’t want me because of that then so be it I wasn’t meant to sign with that club. I used to have coaches when younger that forced me to stop my flair and dribbling or else I wouldn’t play and it took me years to get my confidence back on the ball. Now I play with a smile on my face enjoying what I do on the ball, and i won’t change that for anything , even if it means a club doesn’t sign me
not only are these coaches ruining the sport by destroying promising young players and making the sport dry and boring they are also ruining his confidence. a clearly inexperienced and uneducated coach but unfortunately the price of his stupidity is the life of the beautiful game.
One wise man once said become a master of the rules to break them as an artist plus he didn’t say no skills wingers like Roku don’t just go into dribbling and taking the man if the see a better option that dribbling they will take and that’s what makes doku one of the best prem wingers
We can argue all we want, but fact remains.....ball playing clubs and national teams are the most successful. South American national teams, Spain, Netherlands, France, Germany and many Italy(during the time they had creative midfielders within a defensive system) were playing good brand of football coupled with results. Club sides that are currently playing free flowing style of play are the most successful, Real, City, Arsenal, Barcå, Milan clubs and many others play with more freedom......players are not over coached. Good footballers are born not made,
I think the Coach is right. Messi greatest football player would only use the flick on one on one when there is space, but if there are many markers he uses close control to beat them with the ball on the ground
The English national football team has many good players! Unfortunately, England keeps sticking to an old obsolete playstyle. Maybe it's time to get someone like Guardiola to manage the team. I'm not English, btw, but I like it when all teams are strong !
Im ok with fancy moves if you can consistently perform them during a game to help you dribble. If you know your abilities and you know you're taking a huge risk, then it's better to play it safe for the team to maintain possession. Imho.

The coach is teaching him how to get creative without being predictable
Chipping the ball above a defender to get past him, while being stationary, is a very slow and predictable move

Well done coach 👏 I'll remember that. Footwork is to get you out of trouble, not into trouble.
Academy Killing the art
don’t be stupid. the game has evolved. nowadays defenses play more as a unit rather than individuals. a player’s individual dribbling ability and flair will come in a 1v1 but most of the game you will not encounter that. all the fancy tricks will get you out of that but doing simple fakes, feints and other moves will get you passed more than one defender. it’s about playing smart. mastering the basics and playing it simple will get you farther than just doing fancy tricks all the time.

@@sebfox2194 but france and england play definsive low risk football for so many years now
we probably can't stop teams from trying to do that, the new generations have to develop good close ball controlling dribblers to break 'park the bus' defenses, OR we need an official rule from officials that prevents this type of defenses happening
"Flair" is just fine as long as there's a point to it. The basics get you further, faster. Once you got that, then flair can become creativity.
The difference is you almost fell over yourself.

As a licensed coach I’ve got quite a few issues with this and some questions…
Why has one of the players training got sunglasses on?

Winning is the most important thing in pro level football. we coach flair and individuality out of our kids here in the UK.
"Footwork is to get you out of trouble, not to put you into it"
A quote I'll keep for long 😊
Do your flair when it's safe, and far away from your goal. Many young players want to emulate their heroes without knowing why it was done.
This all depends on pitch position. What you might do on the edge of your own box and the oppositions are 2 entirely different things.
Coach is right: Master the basics BEFORE attempting the exciting showy moves.
Messi is the best example of that. Messi has very little - probably none - flair and showy moves. But what he does have is an exceptional repertoire of EFFECTIVE moves for every situation.
Too many people not comprehending what the coach is saying - he’s absolutely right. He even states what footwork is for - so he’s not against it
I love that but the more and more we are losing #10 position on the field 😭
Literally says at the end “footwork is for getting out of trouble, not into trouble” but these RUclips kids didn’t hear that apparently lmao
Reminder that the Joga Bonito players that do that flick have 5 world cups while the beer bellied Englishmen who teach this only have one world cup.
Coach has been training effectively in the pub by the looks 😂
@ajdrums8075 Lmao , drinking like George Best after his prime lol
The difference is that you’ll train almost all the flair and creativity out of these young ballers
It all depends on where you do that move. On wings, that's not a bad move if you're skilled and fast enough. In the midfield, maybe not the best move.
It takes ages for ballers to practise their flar. That move is called the okocha flick, and it mostly catches players off guard, so a pass in that situation wouldn't be necessary since he can perform some skills to get past the defence and cut across
No coach lets his players wear sunglasses 😎

@Resprays Northern Ireland is the same country that produced George Best though , why have they never produced a player like that since the 60s while Brazil continued to produce players with similar talent consistently ?
For the player with poor footwork, I'd advise this, but if a kid has flair, creativity, and good feet, let them play.
Touch of Ted Bundy
It goes back to the old adage “There is a time and a place”. Sometimes running at a defender will work better than trying to be Ronaldinho.
Now I play with a smile on my face enjoying what I do on the ball, and i won’t change that for anything , even if it means a club doesn’t sign me
Football is about expressing our self’s. Don’t let anyone take that from you!

I know that a pass by the line is harder to defend but they never work out. A defender will just knock it into touch
Damn this is Elite Coaching
Imho.
