Marvin Ducksch from Werder Bremen uses this technique very often. I always wondered why nobody else is doing it, since he scored many great goals this way
One of the issues is that you need to be very quick to take those extra steps running arouns the ball. If you've got very little time and space most players will use their weaker foot when the window to shoot opens rather than go around the ball.
One thing Henry has said is that Mbappe is bringing it back, but also with his own spin. He open his hips as if to go far post, but goes near post instead. So whenever he bears down on goal and opens his hips, he makes the goalkeeper have to make a decision to save his near or far post
I started doing this in the 90s. My original inspiration was Dennis Bergkamp. The way he could effortlessly open up his body, and sidefoot bend the ball into the top corner was legendary. Henry was also great at this, and I used to copy the way he cut the ball from left to right with the outside of his foot before immediately bending the ball into the far corner.
I noticed Mbappé does this extremely often on the left. It’s basically his go to way for scoring goals. Getting in that left side of the box and shooting with his body positioned that way
Having grown up watching Henry do this every week, its kind of funny that this is seen as some kind of forgotten art. To me it seems obvious that its an incredibly efficient way of scoring. Watching you break down "kick the ball in the far corner" as if no one had thought of it or tried it is hilarious
One criticism I'd have is that Henry and Haaland have the luxury of being one of the fastest players of their respective times. On Haaland's goal, the average striker might not have enough time to cut across the ball like that because the defender would be closer to them. Although this technique can be fruitful, it is still important not to neglect your weaker side. Make sure you have the time and space to open up like this before doing so.

Love watching and listening to how strikers think. Funny how defenders are mostly neglected when it comes to tutorials. Asking as one can you help with a bit of defending especially for centre backs
To be a top defender awareness is important, positioning being in the right places to cut off angles, potential killer passes but the real gem is you already said.. watching an understanding How top attackers thinks.. that key to a being a top defender u have to able to think like them, think for them, know what they'll do in a moment
@@thefootballfolkThat's the thing with defending, I've never seen a video that explains it well, maybe it's because there's no right answer on what to do in different situations, only general rules that are incomplete
@@-.-_-.-_-.-_-.-_-.-_-.-_- well yeah defending is not really about technique or skills(those help), its about awareness, physical ability, smarts and coordination. all of which are kind of hard to teach or even put into words in a 7 minute yt video. there is also the fact that defenders in any sport are at a disavantage compared to scorers since sometimes its just a game of probability and is very much influenced by scheme and teammates in a way sometimes scoring isnt.
If the keeper cheats and tries to dive to that far side you can fake and go near post. Hazard was a master at that. Opening up like he was going for a far post finesse and actually finishing near post with power. Caveat is that you have to really sell the far post shot and wait for the keeper to fall for you going far
I am actually strong at my weaker or left side since I am right footed. I was using this technique to score goals without realising. It came naturally to me.
You have to remember that in order to pull this off, you need to have room to run in behind and the pace to then have time to pull this off without pressure from a defender. That's why Henry and Haaland score(do) so many of those
The problem is, once I realized this was how one of my friends (in 5 aside) was scoring, when it was my turn in goal, I always knew how he planned to shoot and drew him into it and saved it every time.
@@TheCompleteGuitarist The problem you have described isn't inherently related to this specific type of shot though. The issue is that any move or shot will become predictable if you use it too often, and don't vary what you are doing enough to remain unpredictable. I use this shot fairly often, but I mix it up by going high and low, far post and near post, as well as using a variety of other types of finish, such as laced power shots, chip shots, fake shots, toe pokes, or whatever fits the situation. So, defenders and keepers have a hard time predicting what I'm going to do. The shot itself is not inherently predictable. The thing that is predictable is the person who doesn't vary what they are doing enough.
A key that I used to train this was squaring my hips so that back-post is almost in line with between my legs. It definitely helped with my accuracy and ability to get around the ball when shooting!

Could you do a break down on Van Nistlerooy's shooting technique? He'd kick the ball giving the keeper very little indication that he as about to shoot, it would often take goalies by surprise. He managed to generate power with very little back swing, it's deadly inside the box.
I think this is also really important, making a curved run (roughly 5 steps from Haaland's clip) to get on the other side to shoot this shot. Love this technique. Thanks for sharing!
You got to watch out for the defender though. If you're clear through on goal, sure. But if a defender is 2 strides behind you, if you try to open up, no matter how fast you are, they'll catch up and either push you off the ball or put a foot in and scoop the ball out.

One of the reasons Henry’s method was so effective was he was able do this without fully opening his body out. Top, top keepers will take visual clues from how and where you’re going to strike a ball from things like your body shape and back lift - so fully showing pass to the corner would come at some disadvantage for most strikers. Yet Henry was excellent at concealing what we all knew he wanted to do, by staying front on and only flicking the passing wedge out at the last second.

My thoughts exactly. Everyone plays inverted these days -- is rare to see a winger or wide mid playing on their "strong" foot (ie, right footer on the right side of the pitch.) Part of the story of the death of crossing is most players can't pick out a pass on the move on their weaker foot.

Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho are by far my favorite living football legends, they are the reason I fell in love with football in the first place, they are part of my childhood... Henry should have won at least one or two ballon d'or in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, he was so unique and underrated back then, he was almost unstoppable and genuinely a very good all-rounder authentic player. ☯️✌️
Opening up your hip like this is great for going around the keeper aswell,.They have to cover the shot from where the ball is now, but if you bring it infront of you and use your week foot that is a meter or more movement which opens up so many angles at that close a range
I doubt anyone here is a hockey player too, but I used to do this same technique for hockey. Right wing, left handed, switch puck to my left open up my chest, quick snap shot for the top bin, goalie has a really hard time to react.
Shooting very high under the crossbar is better for scoring. The far top corner is the most difficult for the goal keeper of course. But a high powerfull shot near the center is also very difficult if the keeper is relativ close to you. So if you have the chance run close to the goal/keeper and shoot high. Most of the time the keeper comes close to you anyway. If you have time do a fake shot first. It disrupts the defender and keepers balance.
It would be nice if you could create a video that breaks down Messi's unstoppable and majestic chips. Whenever he faces the goalie one-on-one, he calmly executes a chip. He’s the best chipper I ever seen.
Awesome! Best stuff out there. We are American and no nothing so this is the closest we will get to Europe . Keep it coming please. My boy and I appreciate it mate
Another interesting aspect of doing this is that your posture is screaming to the keeper that you're going to shoot on the open side, but it can be pretty easy to go straight for the inside too, so you can even trick the keeper and send him the other way entirely. I remember a very nice Juninho Pernabucano goal like that but I can't find it anywhere ahaha
I also think lot of people underestimate how much time it takes for keepers to get down and block those low balls. Even if it isn't that far from their body, most have hard time getting down on time to make a save with their hands, hence decent amount of keepers use their legs instead, but coverage length is limited.
I don't watch football that often so I dont know why this video came into my feed. But, I watched it all the way through as you made it very entertaining. Well thought out and produced, keep up the great content. Youve gained a sub
Super simple when you think about it Tony, but as you say, why isn't everyone doing it? Brilliant, informative video pal, and your editing techniques are insane
Hey Rich! So glad you liked it 😁 It’s good to see a lot of the great finishers of today using it, but through the semi pro & amateur leagues it’s certainly few and far between 🤔
Coming around also makes it easier to put a little spin on the ball --- bending the trajectory so the shot will slightly curl around the GK and into the far side of the net.
When I was growing up I was a striker, this was so long ago there's very little footage of if but I'm certain if I had every goal I ever scored in open play at least 90% of them would be side footed placed shots. It's simple and it works.
Sweet, most of the time strikers go for the near post even if they already open up the angle. That when they can hide the contact points and less time for keeper reactions otherwise curve ball around keeper to back post.👏🏼
So I wanted to learn this exact "Thierry Henry" technique majorly because I'm also an Arsenal fan and I've been thinking about it for about two weeks now. Never spoke about it with anyone or searched it on Google but I just got this on my recommended page and I'm not even subscribed 🤯 (I'll subscribe now though). I play as a 9 and if this isn't a sign of some sort I don't know what is... I'll download this video too hope I can find more like this on this channel.
It is a great breakdown and explanation and the tips are spot on. However I can't help but bring up that this is only one of many different scenarios a player would find themselves in and requires other variables to be right, like for example, it is a technique that shines when you are one-on-one with the keeper or have plenty of space to maneuver, but that as soon as there is pressure or a defender properly positioned, it loses a lot of it effectiveness.
This is how I used to score when I played, I never went for flashy goals, though I have scored a fair few, like the odd Bicycle, but I always just accurately placed the ball into the corners with the inside of the foot.
Man I love this shot uk, like the first time I did it was purely based on insticts and it felt literally so good well actually most of the times i do it is on instincts in fact I cant even play good without instincts like damn, but whatever, whenever I have used this against a keeper its mostly a goal. I LOVE IT!👍👍
i think most players nowadays are encouraged to use two feet always and even if they miss with their weak foot it’s good practice. I’ve always been pretty one footed with my left food and i don’t think i’ve ever shot with my right food, maybe 2/3 tap ins when it’s basically a pass into the next but whenever i go for power i use my left so i always do this when i can or i try to run right and cut back in or pass it. If i devoted myself to making my weak foot better years ago i’d probably do this less as i’d be more comfortable shooting with my right but i only ever think of shooting with my left so this is natural to me
Kane is an absolute master at this as well. The thing with him is, he's also extremely capable of using his left foot, so he would sometimes fake with his left foot and get the ball to his right to "pass" it into the far post.
One benefit of this and you can see it on the Haaland clip as well is that it's also much easier to score on the near post because the goalie expects you to put it in the bottom corner of the far post and so opens up as well
Great in theory, in reality it’s not often you’re completely through on goal, most of the clips you showed of players missing in these situations showed them being tracked by a defender, this technique opens the ball up completely to the defender to make a challenge . Situational definitely.
can u make a video on the proper stance or i guess body posture when dribbling? i am struggling with that, i would really appreciate it. keep up with the good videos
Its kind of mind boggling that more players haven't tried to emulate what Henry did considering how simple it is. I guess you have to be as fast and powerful though to create the time to pull it off, which Haaland is
what makes you think players havent tried to emulate that...The narrative of the video is ridiculous its not some old technique that is making comback there are hundreds maybe thousands of goals scored this way every weekend all across the planet. :D i play fotball on decent level but iam not Henry by any means yet from the 14 goals i scored this half season 5 were with this "old technique" :D i would say from all goals i scored in my life about 20% must have been going forom the side of my weak foot and placing it with my strong foot to the far post around goalkeeper. This is just one of the most basic finishes you are taught as striker
In French thanks to Titi, there's an expression that almost made it into mainstream " plat du pied, securité" = "flat of the foot, security/guaranty" plus it rhymes
I think this kind of stuff comes to the player naturally. Sometimes I did this too by accident (not to the same degree of quality the likes of Henry etc. of course) because I felt more comfortable on my stronger foot. But I do admire winger who are comfortable on both sides like Ousmane Dembele or Mudryk
As a Sports and Exercise Science student, I love this. Even more so because 2 modules out of the current 4 that I am studying are biomechanics based which is essentially based on improving performance in terms of skills, of movements, general performance, overall performance data and biomechanical coordination which this video would very much be applicable to. Also because football is “my” [most loved] sport. So I love this, makes for a great dissertation idea as well, thanks haha 👍🏾🤣
it is good way to learn also is to strike it in the first post , the goalie sometimes leaves a bit of space their and could easliy strike it a drag ball in the first post
Great for Futsal. Most keepers spend so much training above ground that most of them struggle when the ball comes low. If you have enough agility then you don't even need to adjust the body. Go a week to Brazil and take part in some random street football going on you'll learn a lot. Same as going to a pub to play some pool in the UK.

ive been using this my whole life, i never missed using this technique, 100% recommend.
Wow simple yet effective thanks
Opening up your hip like this is great for going around the keeper aswell,.They have to cover the shot from where the ball is now, but if you bring it infront of you and use your week foot that is a meter or more movement which opens up so many angles at that close a range
I used to play football professionally and you make more sense than my coach. Also your voice and video editing is very pleasant. Well done! 👏👏
I appreciate that - means a lot mate 🧡
Henry is a real master of this technique. He scored some insane curves.
Fake shots are great, very underrated moves. Can be used to beat keepers or defenders.
Teemu Pukki is a player who excels at this Henry-like scoring technique. Nice video!
I remember I started doing this technicque when i was 14 or 15. Scored like 20 goals as a rightback/leftback that year
It would be nice if you could create a video that breaks down Messi's unstoppable and majestic chips. Whenever he faces the goalie one-on-one, he calmly executes a chip. He’s the best chipper I ever seen.
I’ll add it to the list 🧡 thanks for the comment mate!
Awesome! Best stuff out there. We are American and no nothing so this is the closest we will get to Europe . Keep it coming please. My boy and I appreciate it mate
👋🏼 heelllooo from New Zealand. Always so cool to hear about where people tune in from. Thanks so much for watching and dropping this comment 🧡
Wow! That was brilliant and I’ve watched Henry highlights for years and never realized that
I don't watch football that often so I dont know why this video came into my feed. But, I watched it all the way through as you made it very entertaining. Well thought out and produced, keep up the great content. Youve gained a sub
Welcome aboard Barnaby 🙌🏼 so glad this landed in your feed - thanks for taking the time to drop a comment 🧡
Italy vs Malta game right now is being decided by players using this technique. Incredible
Opening up your body and hips is always helpful for scoring more goals🔥⚽👌🏾. Works everytime
When I was growing up I was a striker, this was so long ago there's very little footage of if but I'm certain if I had every goal I ever scored in open play at least 90% of them would be side footed placed shots. It's simple and it works.
Thank you, super vídeo, no bullshit, no ads, no useless talking around much!
keep it up
Can you make a video on what goes inside the mind of playerrs like xabi alonso, thomas Mueller
I don't know what it is, but i just love the vibe of this video so much! Keep the great work up lad 😃
Great video! I’ve always struggled with the ball being played on my weaker side.
If i devoted myself to making my weak foot better years ago i’d probably do this less as i’d be more comfortable shooting with my right but i only ever think of shooting with my left so this is natural to me
Insigne was great doing this move also, placing the ball most of the times on the top corner of the back post... 'o tir' aggir'
Kane is an absolute master at this as well. The thing with him is, he's also extremely capable of using his left foot, so he would sometimes fake with his left foot and get the ball to his right to "pass" it into the far post.
thats why i like inverted second strikers in PES 12, such a beautiful way to score
One benefit of this and you can see it on the Haaland clip as well is that it's also much easier to score on the near post because the goalie expects you to put it in the bottom corner of the far post and so opens up as well
I love using this technique, it is efficient and looks amazing when you get it right.
Great in theory, in reality it’s not often you’re completely through on goal, most of the clips you showed of players missing in these situations showed them being tracked by a defender, this technique opens the ball up completely to the defender to make a challenge . Situational definitely.
you're doing great since a few months back amazing growth
You can’t imagine how helpful this is thanks😊
I'm so glad! 🧡
Love watching your videos, It really helps me improve my games !
Will definitely keep watching your channel.
Thank you mate 🧡
can u make a video on the proper stance or i guess body posture when dribbling? i am struggling with that, i would really appreciate it. keep up with the good videos
You’re in luck - this is the next video lined up. Should be posted within the next 24 hours 🔥⚽️
Its kind of mind boggling that more players haven't tried to emulate what Henry did considering how simple it is. I guess you have to be as fast and powerful though to create the time to pull it off, which Haaland is
You already said it...they need to be fast, and opening up their body gives the defender more opening to nudge the ball away.
what makes you think players havent tried to emulate that...The narrative of the video is ridiculous its not some old technique that is making comback there are hundreds maybe thousands of goals scored this way every weekend all across the planet.
Also Del Piero was a master at this. In Italy, ss a matter of fact, we call this "a Del Piero goal"
1:39 is that Julian Green vs France? What a goal that was.
I’ve seen Vinicius do this a lot over the past 2 seasons when he’s one on one, I’ve never seen him miss when he does this and I watch all Madrid games
That is awesome! All the best with your studies mate - glad this content is aligned with what your researching and learning 🧡🔥
@@thefootballfolkthank you for responding and thank you very much mate 👍🏾
it is good way to learn also is to strike it in the first post , the goalie sometimes leaves a bit of space their and could easliy strike it a drag ball in the first post
Pal, thanks for the tips, really effective. My best regards from Brazil.
Thanks! This video is really going to help me improve my game!!😁😁😁
Thank you so much, I will be passing this on to 👍🏽⚽️
Best football channel on this platform by far
New brilliant video! Thank you 🙏🏼
I was missing your videos. They motivate me for football 🔥⚽
Dude I subscribed to you when you were at less than 5k. Now you are at over a 100. Good stuff 👏
You legend! 🙏🏼
Bro, I have already seen the haaland technique in his matches, glad you mentioned.
That’s awesome! Such a gooden
