Tbh I never thought about it like that, Yajirobe like Goku was born with immense strength and appetite. Though Saiyan’s did not exist until Z, they do seem pretty similar. No tail though.
Yaijorobe was strong at the beggining of the serie. He even fought Goku after this scene for the dragon ball he carries on his neck, it ended up as a draw. Sadly, he wasn't never that interested in training like the rest of the cast.
Pretty sure Goku even says that Yajirobe was the strongest person he had fought up to that point, so at this time Yajirobe is stronger than Tien, Krillin, Master Roshi, Yamcha, Mercenary Tao, and anyone else Goku had fought. Hell during the Saiyan arc, when they're training on the Lookout, Yajirobe was deflecting Krillin's attacks with ease so he was still pretty strong even then.

Perhaps at some point discovering that Yajirobe is from a branched evolution of humans with closer relations to their primal ancestors (hence the tail, and Oozaru transformation), and that Goku is also one of them. An angle like that could've been interesting to explore, with Yajirobe being the gateway into it. Perhaps it could've even been used to explain why Yajirobe carried around a sword. Because he knew about the Oozaru transformation, but didn't want to risk causing the destruction that form entailed. So he chose to arm himself with a sword, so that every time his tail grew back, he could remove it himself before it became a problem.
It’s a shame. Had Yajirobe actually kept up with the training to prepare for Nappa and Vegeta, and learned how to use energy, he would be a valuable asset to the Z-fighters. I mean, he was able to take down one of Piccolo’s minions in his first appearance.
