Your wasting time and money on Kitchen, ripe out old cabinets, do your sheetrock, put in your new window, start with a clean slate, take measurements of room, take to Kitchen Designer, buy Box Cabinets and with Kevins Mechanical abilities and You Tube he could install your Kitchen.
Speaking from a Retired Kitchen Designer and Installer. Caution, 🚫 don't use a Post Form Countertop, spend the money for a Custom Top.

I agree 100%. The window still won't line up with the lowers so why not rip it all out and design it from the floor up the way you want it.

Take out old, order new from blue store. Do Sheetrock ( not yourselves, have pro do it ) and paint THEN install cabinets yourself. Before you install cabinets think about new flooring. You are young but you’ll find hiring out for some things is really better than attempting things like Sheetrock which you’ll have to look at boo boos for decades no matter how much you paint it. 65 year old homesteader and we’re on our second place. Keep it simple or you’ll be crazy from living in a construction zone for too long. Happy wife happy life.❤️

An idea for the bottom of the island cabinets is to add slide out drawers. You will definitely love those and it will divide out those cabinets and organizing them will be easier.

You might want to be sure to cover that countertop and floor with some heavy paper or such from the blue store to protect it from damage while working in the area. I'd hire someone to do the ceiling. Not only are full sheets really heavy, but making the joints disappear is a skill. Learned that one the hard way.

I can tell you stripping it down to the studs is expensive. With 3 children you can only do so much. They know the budget they have to stay within and I'm sure they will exceed it. I'm in the industry and will tell you cost have doubled, tripled and even more on many things such as wire, pvc ect. So it's easy for us to spend their money. Kevin's a pretty sharp guy he'll get er done and it will be nice.

    • @albertc7375

@Goatroppin I redid my kitchen and gutted it. It was cheaper and easier doing the new plumbing and the wiring. From the ceiling to the sub floor. 10x15 kitchen.

      @@albertc7375
Yes I would agree easier, but no way it was cheaper. In the end and down the road it's better to strip it down. But they've bought a new car, house, tools and several other things with 1 income and 3 children. I understand why he's doing it the way he is.

My experience the easiest thing to do is take everything down to the studs and start over, piecing a bunch of junk back together will make more work. You are going to need to run wires and plumbing, you will need to foam with fire block at all penetrations through the header. Strip it out and start over

I rip out my kitchen & replaced all the cabinets ,back splash . Had a company come in and do the counter tops . Turn out great . I'm a diy guy around the house . You can order any cabinets combination you want . Its not that hard , they want 3500.00 labor only . I'm no carpenter , I was a car mechanic for a living. Do yourself use that money saved on your house . be sure to look at cabinet upgrades ,inner drawers for pot and pans .

Drywall is the number 1 thing we would have someone else do, especially a ceiling! Twenty seven years ago when we moved into our 100 year old house we decided to put 2 bedrooms in the attic. We did the work ourselves and we had to cut a hole in the dining room ceiling, build a stairway and drywalled everything up there. NEVER again will I drywall. Like Alicia said, it's tedious, dirty, and very hard when it's a ceiling. You'll do great on doing this yourselves, I cant wait to see it complete!

Y’all got this. It’s not as hard as you may think. Hard work yes. Bumps in the road yes. But the money saved and seeing tangible results is well worth it. We just bought a new house with an acre, we had a wood fence installed and it was crazy expensive. I have built plenty of fences in my day, but I am 63 years old and I am past my fence building days. So I spent the money.

My suggestions/thoughts: 1. Remove all the uppers and the faux top header. Then push the new cabinets up thus opening up the counter space. 2. Removing all the faux upper header in the middle of ceiling was a great idea, much more open. 3. Doing it yourself will be the hardest job but the most rewarding. 4. Watching her instantly cleaning reminds me of the cleaning bot in the movie. “Wall-E”. Hehehe

It's going to be a learning experience - I've remodeled several houses over 40 years. Your gonna need some more tools (Good for you Kevin)..Things like - air compressor / nail guns (framing, finish, & brad - I recommend Rigid as they have a lifetime warranty for a homeowner). Sheetrock can be tricky - especially matching an existing ceiling's texture and the tools you will need might not be worth the cost. Have a contractor do it (unless you're going to be doing more remodeling). If were me, I'd take the old paneling down to the old drywall (maybe removing the sheetrock behind the paneling - to facilitate running electrical) - It would be easier to install the new cabinets - although newer houses had a 1 x 4 behind the sheet rock mitered into the studs for attaching cabinets with the appropriate screws, which can be done if the sheetrock is removed. A few more tools - Portable table saw with stand. 12" Compound miter saw - with both rough cut and finishing blades....I could go on, but once these tools are purchased, they'll be invaluable later on. You'll have your ups and downs, but overall - you'll be proud of the work because it was mostly done by yourself and your wife.

When it comes to plumbing (gas, propane or water) just make sure whoever does it does not go crazy with 90 degree turns.....stick to 45 degree and do not drop or increase pipe or tubing sizes abruptly....at least 4 to 5" run for each drop in inside diameter change.

A word of wisdom regarding a microwave over a range. It is difficult to reach by a "shorter" person, and definitely dangerous when reaching over a range in use. The exhaust fan which is now part of the microwave is typically very under powered. If the microwave ever needs repair you will end up replacing the entire unit. Your typical counter top microwave is very inexpensive and can be located in a cabinet shelf. A vent hood is not very expensive and is singly designed to do one thing efficiently and effectively.
There are other reasons not to use a combo microwave/vent, but if my comment gets your attention, I am sure you will do some additional research.
Good luck, it's fun following your continued adventures.

I have no doubt that you both can do this job. I'm sure you have a friend or two that has some skills too. My little two cents... cabinets all the way to the ceiling, but a step stool to reach little used items. Phil and Lolo are super valuable assets right now. When you buy the decking material, don't get white. It glares and hurts your eyes. Our neighbot had it and we could hardly sit out there when the sun was shining. You should be wearing a mask when cleaning up that rat poop. That's how the plague started you know. Amazing what you find in a remodel. We've done it three times over the years. Can't wait to see the progress! How hard can it be? A great song for a tshirt!!

Good morning Y'all, First let me say just do it as you are, one step at a time.
I redid my home years ago. I had contractors do the rough in's and I did what finish work I could.
I did the drywall myself but had a drywall taper come in to do the finish work. Since it was my home I did all the electric work, except for the connection to the fuse panel. When it came to insulation, I priced it all out at Hechinger's and then I got a price from a company that did that work, only $50.00 difference, so that was a no brainer. And as you already know, what you don't know you can learn from RUclips, which is something I didn't have access to back then. All my best to you guys, and I'll be watching to see how things turn out BTW The Orange store may be a little cheaper than the Blue store. lol

I had most of the tools,(did get couple new one's!) There are items that is much better to be done by someone that has training and the expertise in the trade. We lived in our house with a full remodel. Parts of it were bad. The worst was the continual cement dust after contractor chiseled up the tile floors throughout the house. I swept & mopped twice a day & still had dust & it seemed to permeate the walls. Kraft made sent wrong cabinets so kitchen was delayed but at least my new floors were installed so no more dust.
We had a refrig.and ended up bringing our propane camp chef cooker in so we could have meals. Now it’s a great memory. You’re going to make memories.
Since your buying new top cabinets, you can get up to the ceiling so you don’t have to have a spider, mouse, bug home in a bulkhead!!

I live in the Pacific nw and we get tons of weather on our decks. Cedar 2x4 or 2x6 with an oil like boiled linseed oil holds up the best for years and years between re-coatings, plus it is easy to add more with a pump sprayer. The issue with composite decks is they easily warp in sun and are so hot that you cannot step on them without shoes if in direct blistering sun of Texas. Just a caution, both are good but our cedar deck is 30 years old and still ok.

Upper cabinets can be staggered heights and bumped out every other one if multiple cabinets on the wall. another idea is led lights hidden on top of the cabinets to turn on as night lights. I would not reinstall any of the wood that was on the top. I like the clean look. Lots of new kitchens are doing lighter top cabinets and darker lower color on bottom cabinets. It will take some time to order your cabinets so perfect time to install ceiling. Also great idea for moving AC unit. Loving the progress so far. You got this.

With a Lowes credit card you can get a 5% discount. Take the kitchen cabinets all the way to the ceiling. Store less used items on the upper shelf.

Why two pantries instead of one huge one with adjustable shelves? Would be easier to do, less supplies, and not have to break it down to three parts.. Another idea, instead of mounting the microwave do a drawer microwave under where the range was(the kiddos can reach it), put a newer flat top range in where the exisitng hole is, then double ovens to the right..

You guys can do this! I have remodeled my entire 2016 manufactured home. I enlarged my kitchen, redid BOTH bathrooms (including pouring a shower pan and installing tile ALL BY MYSELF...53 yr old woman), and laid all new carpet and flooring. RUclips is your FRIEND! LOTS of helpful and professional people on RUclips who can walk you thru step by step.

I’ve got these kind of videos! the best part of starting a new project is buying new tools! I would hire somebody to do the drywall! drywall is a very hard job and has be perfect to look good! Please take us shopping when you buy a new tools! For the deck you can just put two by fours on the slab of concrete and put that track stuff on top of the 2 x 4 so you have an area to screw it down to just put vinyl on the deck! Will be excited to see more. Have a good day.

I think you should prioritize the workshop. A "reasonably" equiped workshop would make your home projects go that much easier 🤣.
You may be looking at a level 5 finish job on that ceiling.

Hey, you are crazy but I love it! and yes, I think just taking the top cupboards down and put up fresh! LOL I think in the long run, purchasing the cupboards will save you money, rather than trying to piece it together. It looks to me that the previous owners did just that, piece it together. You both got this!!!!!

Before you do anything else!! Get some cardboard and lay it on top of the granite countertops before you scratch or crack them. Please.
Replacing the top cabinets is a great idea! You'll spend much less with stock cabinets, as opposed to true custom.
    Wear gloves and safety glasses...always.
By the way...in case anyone else mentions it...add me to the list...I'm not a fan of long form youtube.

    Sheet rock done with
    the professional contractor 💯%😊
I would cover those granite counters up with painters drop cloths or something. A bit of protection. Those are costly to replace! Keep on trucking along 👍😊
