On the contrary, i do not think Katsumoto is being sarcastic here. Hes actually trying to bridge the gap between them on a most basic level so they can get to know each other. He knows his english is pretty good, but he doesnt shy away from inferring his english is in a state that hed need Algrens help. That, to me, shows he is able to show vulnerability by requesting the aid of an enemy, in order to get closer to one another. It shows courage and wisdom, and imho is far, faaaar from being sarcastic.

Very true, I'm not normally a fan of most Tom Cruise movies but in this it almost feels as if Tom is the supporting actor and he simply observes Ken Watanebe's character from a western POV, it's refreshing for a Hollywood film to be so authentic and respectful.

Extremely good writing all throughout this movie... The subtle irony of what Algren says about cutting off the heads of defeated kneeling men... Implying that it was cruel or even cowardly... Actually being a projection of how he feels about his own actions in killing innocent retreating and unarmed women and children during his war... At least Hasegawa was a soldier who was defeated, rather than the civilians that Algren massacred...the disgust that he portrays is actually directed inwards at his own self... Brilliant...

Cutting a friend's or even enemy's head off was back then such an honor. This is because the act means giving assistance to those who want to end their lives in dignity without having to show someone themselves suffering when they are about to die. Dying on their own will quickly and without showing their ugly appearance of suffering was ideal at the time. Cherry blossoms are the symbol of this philosophy in the Japanese Bushido.
