    I've used the method you demonstrate here for years, and it's fine, but I recommend putting your cleaning fluid into a spray bottle and spraying the brush with it before cleaning the record. Applying the drops directly to the brush gives you spotty coverage. It's okay, but I like spraying a lot better. Also, I don't really like applying pressure with the record on the turntable, so I prefer doing it on some other surface. I put a sturdy, cardboard record mailer on the sofa, then put a mofi inner sleeve, or even a jacket storage sleeve, on top of that. Finally, place the record on top of that. Now, you're ready to clean. You can now apply as pressure as you feel is necessary without worrying about doing something to your record platter. I like how you used the anti-static brush after cleaning. It looks like it would give you that extra step of cleaning. I'm going to have to try that.

    It's been a while since this video was released, but one major suggestion I can give to you and those looking to clean your records is to look into the GrooveWasher. Basically, it is a very good replica of the RCA Discwasher brush from the 70's and 80's with a solution that is the exact recipe as the fluid used for that old brush. I have been using this thing since November and honestly, it works wonders with cleaning your records. Heck, the day I typed this I saved a new record I got from serious static because of a bad inner sleeve thanks to it. Went from having massive noise to none after a few cleans.

    I miss the old days when stores had record-cleaning machines. Put your record in, drop a dime in the slot, and the whole thing was scrubbed clean in a minute or so. Those did a better job than any at-home cleaning method. Haven’t seen one of those since the ‘70s, I don’t think.

    Thanks for this video. I'm 61 years old and my method of cleaning is different from, but similar to yours. I still have my original Discwasher from the 80s when I was in college. (CAVEAT: I am NOT an "audiophile." I listen to music to enjoy it. I am not offended by hearing a pop or scratch every now and then or by not hearing the highest frequency of a high hat cymbal.) This is my procedure every time I bring home a new (really it's usually used) record. I have an LP sleeve-sized piece of cardboard covered with a towel that I can remove and replace easily. I lay the record on the towel and spray it with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution I get at the Dollar Tree for a buck in a spray bottle. Then I use the Discwasher to clean the record. I flip the record over and repeat the process. I haven't cleaned my records on my turntable in years, because I've accidentally pressed too hard and damaged them. This is easy, cheap, and, most importantly, effective. If you do this EVERY time you bring home an LP and store your LPs properly, you shouldn't have to do it every time you play your record(s). In between cleanings I use a toothbrush to clean the Discwasher and, depending how dirty it gets, I replace the dirty towel with a clean one.

  • @warrenmacdonald1372
    @warrenmacdonald1372 8 лет назад +5

    I use the Discwasher system (I've been using it for years; ever since the D3 fluid has been around). A less expensive way to dry the record is to give it a good spin on the platter of the turntable (after cleaning, turntable OFF) and fan it with an empty record jacket until the platter comes to rest. Then use the anti-static brush again to remove any dust from the previous step. Works for me. Kudos, Viny Eyzz for taking the time to help the uninitiated who might think that most things are indestructible, like "grabbing" non-scratched media from the CLOUD. The consequences of how records are handled becomes evident when they are played, like a "history lesson".

    I'd suggest to incorporate Dyson suction into any vinyl cleaning procedure.
    Use the narrow attachment and placing a thin cloth (I use a small spectacle cleaning cloth) attach it firmly by using a sturdy elastic band to cover the narrow hole of this attachment.
    Then literally hoover the disc but carefully. The cloth will prevent scratch/other damage to the disc. Always apply the suction when disc is totally dry.
    Dust and other muck sucked from the grooves will collect on the cloth which can then be cleaned, dried and reused.

    I used a Discwasher brush in the 70s and 80s to clean my vinyl. You'll notice that the brush is made with a contoured or rounded surface. The last step to using this brush is to gently roll the brush away from the edge you wetted. The brush is designed to be used this way. Another thing that happens to vinyl is that the unsleeving and handling often creates static electricity which attracts dust. I used a "anti-static" gun to remove the static charge on the vinyl surface. Just aim it toward the record surface, gently squeeze the handle and the gun emits a small electric charge. It worked well but Radio Shack is now defunct so you'd have to look online.

    There's so much wrong in this video.
    That flat brush you're using isn't doing anything but pushing dirt deeper into the grooves and helping to generate static electricity.
    The RCA Discwasher and new D4 solution is a pale imitation of the original Discwasher system. It's literally just a piece of corduroy, whereas the Discwasher had directional fibers that actually worked in the grooves. All you're doing with that is redistributing dirt and dust.
    The antistatic brush IS NOT MEANT TO BE USED WET AT ALL. It's also meant to be used while the record is spinning - as are ALL of these methods, in fact. You start in the center label, touching the fibers to the metal spindle to help discharge static electricity, and slowly move it across the surface to the edge. The way you're showing by simply swiping it all over the record is also likely to cause scratches.
    Oh, and all of these methods don't actually get any of the dirt that lodged deep within the groove. That can only be accomplished with a VPI system. Spin Cleans can also work, but they're not nearly as effective.
    Do you even do any research before making these videos or just assume you know what you're doing because it works for you?

    • @j.m.channell8938
      @j.m.channell8938 7 лет назад +13

      A carbon fiber brush is fine for getting dust off right before playing, but they do sometimes shed, so keep an eye out for that. All of them are made in the same factory pretty much, so brand doesn't really matter. Just start the turntable, lightly press the brush to the record surface starting at the label touching the spindle, then slowly take it in a straight line off the edge of the record.
      The wet brushes do an okay job, but don't get very deep in the grooves. The RCA Discwasher is exceptionally bad. I like the Audio Technica AT6012, but use it as you would an old Discwasher. Put a line of fluid on the leading edge (not in the reservoir as designed... you'll waste a lot of fluid that way), put it on a spinning record, then turn it to the dry edge for a few rotations. Repeat on the other side and let dry - which won't take very long.

Some records it seems to help greatly, others I can't really tell a difference (it's usually the older ones with years of embedded crud that it doesn't seem to help much). I think for the money though it's the best thing out there. ...I disagree with this video's "best method" for cleaning vinyl, his method only wipes off the surface dust. Of course he also says you need to replace your stylus/cartridge ever six months so he lost all credibility in my eyes.

    I find with thrift store or yard sale vinyl, I'll wash them first with a light dishsoap and water solution, rinse and then dry with a microfibre cloth. I'll even use a microfiber washcloth to get deep into the grooves with the soap and water. THEN, I'll clean it using the Discwasher brush, and use a fresh, clean inner sleeve. I've brought back a lot of records this way. Some fetishists love using expensive units like the Nitty Gritty or the Spin Clean. I find good clean microfibre cloths and the discwasher brush (and a "Decca" brush) are the way to go.

    For cleaning the worst off, Radio Shack used to sell a "sponge" to clean records with, just get it wet with tap water or distilled water if you're a perfectionist, and clean it going with the grooves. They don't make that any more, but I have found essentially the same kind of sponge at places like Home Depot. It's a very flat sponge, about 1/4" thick. Depending on how dirty the LP is, I'll use this, and then use the Discwasher system.

    You might say that i'm weird but I happen to own an airbrush (a small one that is meant to paint miniatures, not cars) and use it to clean records. I just put in some water and spray it lightly on the record. Then wipe it off and you should have a clean record

    The discwasher brush is different than in the 70s early 80s. The new ones are like corduroy, the older ones are like velvet and get into the grooves better I have both. I lost my old one and purchased the new kind. Shortly after I found the old one and put the other one away. I now use a spin clean and it works great. What I do is clean it like it says in the instructions. Than I use clean distilled water as a rinse. I had a record I was going to get rid of but I used the spin clean and it sounds great.

    Just found a product called Vinyl Vac! It serves as a drying solution for your vinyl. It's basically like the VPI and Okki Nokki machines with out the motorized platter. You hook it up to your own vacuum and it'll dry your vinyl within a few turns! It's only $30 on amazon. Hope this helps anyone who reads this.

    I simply use window cleaner but it has to be ammonia free. Just spray around the record, make sure you cover the label before you spray otherwise you'll ruin it, and gently rub with two fingers around the record for about a minute. Then wipe off fluid with something soft like a flannel, make sure all the fluid is wiped off and - voila! It works wonders and every record I've cleaned sounds great.

    When cleaning a record, it DOES matter which direction you pass the brush. Work WITH the groove which ends on INSIDE of the LP, so that whatever isn't picked up by the brush, will get PUSHED to the inside groove. NEVER lift your brush halfway, you'll end up with a line of dust across the LP.
    Avoid liquids, unless you really have to remove grunge and other deposits which shouldn't be there to begin with.

    when i buy a "used" record and it's realy dusty and heavily crackles when playing i just use wood glue to clean it. I have a bottle of glue thats a little (!) diluted with water so it runs into the grove more easily and just spread it on the record and let it dry. The glue can be peeled off effortlessly when it's dry and it leaves the record as shiny as if it was new.
    This method is a bit of a hassle though, as the record needs to lay flat for as long as the glue dries. So this is something i don't recommend doing regulary but rather just to clean the "new" records for your collection.

    Dust is everywhere, including micro dust from human skin cells etc. BTW, the average human sheds about 6 pounds of skin cells per year for an example. If you got a family, do the math. Most of my LPs are obtained used. So dust removal is all important before even playing an LP for the first time. Fact is, with a pristine looking LP that has pops and clicks, they are caused by dust in the groves. I am fanatical about removing dust and most of my LPs are noise free with just an occasional click. and even some of those might be a glitch in the vinyl.
    BTW, those carbon fiber brushes are not record cleaners. What they do is remove surface dust only that can collect on a stylus and can also eliminate a static charge that can attract more dust. So they do indeed serve a very useful purpose. I use one before playing each side of an LP.

    Just a few drops of discwasher fluid on the brush, and use the bottom of the bottle to rub fluid onto the brush. Then turning on the turntable with your record of choice, gently apply the brush as it spins. With a slight upward twist of the brush, remove any debris. Now stop he turntable and zerostat in a triangular fashion above the vinyl. You may want to check the stylus at this point and clean as necessary.
    After the ceremony, enjoy.

    My experience cleaning records dates from 1965. The RCA cleaner brush is about the same as the DiscWasher from that era. Same use of fluid on the brush and wipe record. I quickly discovered that what was picked up on the wet brush stayed on the brush and became "scum" which built up over time and then got layed down on records cleaned in the future. This product was popular for a time because of massive advertizing, but its dirty little secret almost killed it off. Now its back with the RCA label. Once the brush gets dirty, it cannot be cleaned adequately, and the wet status [I think] tended to grow stuff which also got into later records. - AVOID. Spend a few bucks for "Spin Off" record cleaner instead.

    great tips. an old dj trick I learned was a spray bottle with water. playing the record wet not only helps keepy records clean by changing the dust into a "mud" thats easier to discard but it also fills in the little scratches and gets rid of the pops and crackles. I sometimes run with a bead of water from the bottom of my cartridge to the record. essentially the needle is under water. makes for amaIng sounds. been doing it for years.

    Please note that the molecular structure of vinyl is complex and has hydrogen bonds, For this reason keep moisture to a minimum as to not cause breakdown in the vinyl. This is why plastics become brittle like in chairs if kept outside for long periods of time. The above system if great but I just would use the D4 sparingly and dry the records soon after. Thanks for the video.

    • @gaza4543
      @gaza4543 5 лет назад

      Hahahah what a load of bull, what makes plastic, PVC in this case, go brittle outside is sunlight more specifically UV. PVC really hates UV that what break down the hydrogen bonds . Not water and will happily live under water all its life with no corrosion what so ever. They make tap drainage pipes out of the stuff christ sake. A simple good will even answer that question "Unlike metal piping, PVC Pipes won't rust or corrode over time because it doesnot react with air and water the way metal does which results in a significantly longer lifetime of the pipe. Consequently, PVC Pipe is more cost-effective in applications where soil is aggressive."

    +Vinyl Eyezz You should check out eBay and buy one of the old Discwasher brushes with the black pad. Those pads are directional and will take all the dust off your record. You let it run around your record once or twice and you will see a line of dust on the Discwasher trapped in the pad.

You can buy packs of them for not much money's, Picture frame cleaner distaste the plastic the best. Anything else that needs serious removal or is quite stubborn i find a clay kit for cars does really well just dab/roll over the record and it pulls all the stubborn bits out, pro-ject sell something similar, green putty in a tub.

    too much set them upward in your dish drainer check the label
    to see if it dry than if it is i took a brand new sock put your hand in it and lightly go over both sides and have you album ready so you can put your record in its album this way you wont have to get fingerprints on you clean record and there were brushes to clean your needle
