  • The Cold War: When nuclear weapons kept the entire world on the edge of M.A.D. - Mutually Assured Destruction. As Russia, China and the USA flex their military muscles on the global stage today, ‘M.A.D. World’ takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War.
    In this episode:
    - The Caribbean island paradise of Grenada has a Marxist government and it’s just three and a half hours flight from Miami. When a violent coup installs an extremist leader, the USA moves swiftly. Overnight, they send in troops to invade the island and take over the government.
    - The corrupt and brutal military dictatorship of Nicaragua is crushed by a national rebellion but the rebels are Marxist. The USA funds the counter-revolutionaries in a scandal that goes right to the top of the US Government.
    - Ronald Reagan announces a new arms program that is so far from reality it is quickly dubbed ‘Star Wars’. The program aims to use a range of futuristic technology to build a laser defence system against nuclear attack. Many fear that if ever SDI becomes reality, it will upset the delicate balance of power of the Cold War.
    - Gorbachev wants to stage a new revolution in Russia. He wants economic reform, greater freedom and an end to the Cold War. Talks begin with US President Reagan to begin destroying nuclear weapons and forge a renewed friendship between East and West.
    - A new Russian Leader decides try and rescue the failing soviet economy. One of Mikhail Gorbachev’s first moves is to pull his troops out of Afghanistan. But the Mujahedeen do not sign the peace treaty and the Afghanistan war is far from over.

This documentary is wrong and lefty propaganda. The Granadan invasion occurred because the leftist Prime-Minister was overthrown and murdered. The Organisation of American States, the Governor-General of Grenada and the endangered Americans gives ample justification for this. The Edit: "Contras" in Nicaragua were not exclusively former National-Guardsmen but also plenty of democratic opponents of the previous regime. They just were not communist. Furthermore the Contras won the next elections legitimately (A broad coalition from the left to the right.) and did not reverse but increased land-reform and finally the guy in charge of Nicaragua today Edit: "(07.01.23)" is the same guy as in the '80s. Edit: Ronald Wilson Reagan was correct, they were the Founding-Fathers of the country.

Exactly, and it will never end. As long as there are nuclear weapons meaning as long as a direct military attack is out of the question the superpowers will attack each other with the cold war means. There's also the fact that all the dictatorial regimes in the world have their own imperialistic ambitions and in reality THAT was always the real cause of the Cold War. The USSR"s ambition and desire to spread communism to all the world is what triggered and maintained the Cold War.

Okay then, why did the Central-Americans not flee to Cuba or the soviet union and not the country that supposedly oppresses them? Maybe it is because subverting Central America was not a good thing. In the '80s, America was willing to at least look the other way if the revolutions were not marxist (See Korea and the Philippines who were staunch Cold War allies.). They made the correct decision of course. Instead today after decades of the United States of America doing nothing Nicaragua is ruled by the guy the Contras were fighting against.

Also it is a bit hypocritical to complain about the Contras but not any other freedom fighters (Also if you look at the electoral record the Contras were voted in in the late '80s.). The commies supplied brutal terrorists in Asia and Africa but people complained about the colonial states but the moment the Americans do it everyone hates them. The Iran-Contra scandal is also @~?£ed up because it was the democrat's gag order which prevented funds normally going through.

I mean they invaded a foreign country , killed people with howitzers and grenade throwers and what not.
How could the take cuban prisoners if they had not even declared a war ?
Bad habits , bad example and the russian followed that example.
And all the western allies ran into the same trouble when the americans invaded iraq and afghanistan and got totally defeated cause otherwise no one would retreat.
And Afghanistan was the same defeat like Vietnam, a war for nothing
except nowadays it is the american tourist destination and of cause what else work bench after apple does no longer love china that much anyemore.
I would love to hear how upset those vietnam veterans born in the 40s must be today for the war the fought without any real goal.
But the sad story: which american does care about grenada nowadays and draws the same line russia draws nowadays for the exact same reason, even worse: grenada had been part of the commonwealth
Time to learn for the americans more about history especially foreign history.

This documentary distorts the invasion of Grenada 40 years ago, the Americans got involved because there were Americans there under threat, a revolution took place with the murder of the Prime-Minister and the Cuban threat (Also no-one cares what the General Assembly thinks.). The Governor-General himself asked the Americans for help and the American states agreed. This is such a brain-dead attempt to take a swipe at Ronald Wilson Reagan. If anything blame how disorganised the invasion was. As for the Contras, they were not just samoza people, there were those disillusioned by the sandanistas. This is one area where I have a lot of sympathy with this documentary (Guerrillas are very effective but their tactics involve immense violence on civilians which I find difficult to support.) but it just leaves it out. Edit: Want some irony, people are fleeing Nicaragua now in 2023 because a certain dictator with flashback power is there...I wonder what foreshadowing the '80s give us.

    • @TheWedabest

Why didn't the governor-general call on help from the commonwealth? Grenada was part of the commonwealth, so that would make it a british problem and an american problem.
