Wanna hear a funny thing? : Massdrop cannot ship these "made in France" headphones... to France. 🤔
You sure they aren't "assembled" elsewhere?
@@bpjbp I don't know. It is written "fabriqué en France" on it.
@@vintageflanker7096 "assembled in" and "made in" are two different things. Parts can be "made in" one country, but "assembled" elsewhere -- but still deserve the "Made in" stamp.
They are made an assembled in France. They are shipped from France and the only thing Massdrop does before sending them is a quality check. You can see this in the comments :)
@@nagaame7464 I have searched the entire Massdrop description. The only thing I see about "assembled" is "The drivers are assembled by a handful of technicians". Nothing about assembled in France.
Where do you see it?
Subscribing to this channel has been such an expensive mistake
facts. found my main loudspeakers and dac... and headphone amp here. soon a new pair of headphones too!!
Expensive? Yes. Mistake? No. However, your friends and family will definitely think you're and f*@ckin lunatic. Sadly this is the truth
It learned me a very valuable life lesson, self control. A nearly 2000$ very valuable ish life lesson.
"I'm easily manipulated by ramble marketing man, and buy plastic that's overpriced and that I don't want or need" 😁
These headphones ruined my listening. Now every-time I hear something fall in the background during porn I have to take my headphones off and look for what fell.
hahahahhaha
why watch porn when your headphones *are* the porn
Condensed review is at 5:52
"Condensed" lol
Merry Christmas Zeos
Keep doing your thang man.
Z you are truly a living legend. You are a combo of cat guy meets anime guy meets audiophile meets Jon Lovitz meets "goes to grocery store in pajamas and slippers" guy. 10/10
You blow
whelp time to Save, just bought a THX 789...next purchase from MD are these thanks zeos
Did you get them yet? I had the Elear and I’m still deciding if I want to try the Elex. I actually liked the Elear. I sent them back due to a scratch on the top of the leather headband and a scratch on the earcup hanger that I just couldn’t get past. Something that expensive I just want them perfect. I already have the Elegia so I’m doing the .....Do I NEED the Elex thing.
@@Assimilator702 yes, yes you them!!
HOw do all these sound with different AMPs and not an Italian Reference AMP that cost quite a fortune? Do you still fund the same differences among them with an AUNE or THX789? Would have been nice if you tested them live with a different set of AMPs. Thanks.
After your journey starting from the 600's now that you listened to almost everything, How about reviewing the hd600s again and see where they stand and how much your taste has changed and what has changed when it comes to how you like your music.
Because i still prefer my 650s to anything else i heard.
I still have my 650s four years after getting into this hobby. Still in my top 5
I'll always keep my 660s in the collection, think I may grab a 600 also while I still can.
same, they have a balance and smoothness to the sound that nothing seems to beat.
@@alvarg totally agree with that! I bought a pair of LCD-2C a few weeks ago to replace my HD600s. Guess what? 2C's returned, kept my HD600s lol. They were excellent, but had cons I can't live with.
Had my HD600 for seven years at this point. I've upgraded to the ZMF Eikon, but the HD600 will always be part of my collection in some capacity
8 months later... not only are these still my favorite headphones, but I love them even more after getting a Darkvoice 336SE.
I like them on my Lyr3 with a specific tube, unfortunately..one of the most expensive and older nos tubes @ 100$ per. I would like to pick up a Darkvoice at some point and bonus.. it uses the same 6sn7 tubes that I have a lot of now.
Just watching this review for the second time after watching Joshua's review. I like it when you guys have like the complete opposite takes on aspects of a set of headphones.
Totally agree. Awesome headphones. Couldn't believe the price.
Zeos is absolutely right about these. It's scary how good they sound. Endgame for me.
Shame about the clipping
@@LewisHolford You know, I haven't heard it at all in the year I've had them, but of course I can't speak for everybody.
@@anarchohelenism that's crazy, my set clips like mad. The Drop reviews are absolutely riddled with complaints about it
@@LewisHolford Sorry to hear that man. It's a pretty excellent headphone besides that.
@@LewisHolford Has it always clipped? Wondering if buying a used pair without clipping would resolve this issue.
Still that great a year later? (Compare against sendyaudio?)
Wow, I love this headphone. I buy them through drop following your recommendation. The detail is exquisite and these are very fun headphones. I like these more than fostex TR-X00 and dt 1770 pro...Although it works brilliantly with jazz, classical and acoustics as it brings life to those instruments, it also works well with well-recorded pop and edm. My maroon 5 tracks become a beast with these headphones. :)
Would the Schiit Magnius and Modius be a great combo for to power these? Or is there some other option. Also, in the two years since this review was made is there a better contender in this $700 price point?
I see a lot of discussion on the clipping problems with the Elex, so why is there no mention of this on the review, either to confirm, negate, or whatever?
Glad I got the elex like 3 or 4 months ago.
I joined the zues iem drop so that can be my Christmas gift lol, actually late Christmas gift cause it will arrive on April or before that according to massdrop.
From what I heard the zues is a monster one of the best audio output devices, big praise, and a big promise.
I hope if Z can review it.
I got a feeling it might beat the ZMF.
5:20 "could come with shoelaces, could be a dead rat in the box" hahahaha
You have to eat the dead rat to get the headphones to work, that’s how worth they are.
Just picked these up for 550 with like 5 hours on them. Best headphones I have ever listened to. Also great for gaming and pinpointing enemies.
Garrett Strand do you still use these for gaming? How do they hold up?
John Stone boy them explosions tho
You might really like the Focal Aria 906 speakers, Zeos. What you said about the Elex kind of apply to the 906 too, I’d love to know your opinion about them!
Review the Emotiva Airmotiv T2s!
why do you have the kef speaker upside down? and why noone didn't mention it till now??? 🤔
Z, could you add a link to those cables in the description?
If I use PC with 3.5mm and spdif output, what DAC should I use? budget $200 or under. Together with Elex headphone with THX AAA 789 amp. Thanks
The Elex are in stock, so they'll keep re-launching the drop until the run out of stock. It's not timed like normal drops where you can only order within the time period, with these you can order as long as they have stock.
Agreed, drop says active for another 24 hours then says inactive for a sec then reset again to 24 hours :) Get them till you can I say.
Adam Jensen yeah guess what happened to the THX amp. RIP
How do these compare to the Verum One?
How does it compare to the vokyl erupt
Any chance you could try the Elear with the Clear or Elex pads?
11:18
Zeos Pantera: You can only pick one: Focal Elex or ZMF Aeolus?
Do you think these go better with a digital or tube amp?
Almost 5 years later. Just got my pair in based off another reviewer. Came here to see if i made the right choice. Im happy i bought them, best sounding heaphones I have by far.
I’m trying to play some of the highest quality digital piano sounds ever recorded and want to feel like I’m at a real Grand Piano. Are these the ticket? My HD558s are pretty good but a little muddy. I’m thinking the clarity and soundstage on these would be amazing in comparison to what I have. Any help is appreciated :) (I also have the Beyerdynamic DT990 on my radar)
What is the difference between Elex and Elegia? Anyone?
I see you have the ADI-2 DAC. Very solid performance with the Elex.
How do they compare with the Sundara?
well the elex pads cant be purchased anywhere except via massdrop...someone should do a test of elex vs clear vs elear vs utopia pads....I wonder who has access to all this stuff?
16:28 Where do you find all of your backgrounds? Also, I see Natsuki on the far left, 5th from the top
The Utopias are heavier because it’s a totally different driver design, especially in the segmented magnets.
Driver design is the same. Only magnet structure and actual diaphragm material is different. Overall design of driver is exactly the same between all the Focal drivers.
It would be funny if zmf and massdrop have a deal for zeos to sell their products because most of the audio file community agree that the utopia and the clears are a clear upgrade from the elex but he puts off them both and boast up the elex so boom like the thx aaa 789 gets a influx of sales and praises massdrop
Focal Elex or Audeze LCD X??
you said an upgrade would be zmf?? which ones??
I guess I'll hem and haw for a few days on whether or not to find a pair to swap with my Æon closed-backs. I miss open-back soundstage.
can you link me to the red/blue cable?
Great! I thought I was the only freak around still listening to Interstellar soundtracks..
actually this is the best review of Focal Utopia 9:54
saving up for Elax starting today
Got this mint on Ebay for $587 on Ebay and it's the best dynamic headphone that I own. I had an Elear and it's a great headphone but selling it for my Elex fund was a great decision.
Ordered one today.
Bought them, highly recommend.
Do you think it would be good decision to sell my Nighthawks and buy these?
They don't ship to Europe. I'll have to content myself with my HD58X. Are these night and day with HD58X or only slightly better?
Overall i say better? But they are different. 58x is much smoother. elex is more "hifi". Actually they both have flaws and are not perfect. You will enjoy 58x.
@@johnyang799 what do you think are the flaws of the 58x? I have it since July and only have supposedly "inferior" headphones to compare like the 598 and the focal spirit pro, so I am curious to know what are the flaws (many people consider it better than Hd600). And what are the flaws of the elex? One of the main use for my headphone is playing digital pianos (so neutrality and "vocals" are very important)
@@_Digitalguy For vocals the HD6XX (or HD650) is king. Since you don't need soundstage the Elex' might be overkill.
@@bened22 Soundstage is definitely a plus for piano. The big issue with my Focal Spirit pro is that they sound claustrophobic, which for piano is a deal breaker. The HD598 make you feel like you are wearing no headphones which is what you do when you play a real piano. But the Hd58x, while more intimate, sound better, though the difference it's definitely not night and day... I don't thing Hd6xx would add enough compared to Hd58x, that's why I was wondering if the Elex would make the piano sound even better...
I haven't heard the Elex, but I have heard many headphones that are supposedly "superior" to them. As of yet I don't believe there is a headphone in the world that is "night and day" better than the HD58X.
The HD800/s is more detailed, and faster. But it isn't as enjoyable to listen to, as it's a bit cold and sterile, and voices don't sound quite as natural. The Hifiman planars (500, 560 etc) are great, and detailed, and "fast", but again the 58X/600/650 isn't that far behind in those respects, and sounds better in others. Same with things like the higher end Grados (of which I'd say the HD6xx range is just outright superior), Audeze LCDs.
I've always maintained that the HD6xx range (and that includes the 58X) gets you 90% (or higher) of the way there. The "better" headphones cost multiples and get you maybe a few percent more at best.
So these over stax L300? Budget for around 700$
Focal Elex or wait for finalized Vokyl Erupt. I'm interested in trying something with a very wide soundstage after using the HD650's for so long.
Elex don't have very wide SS, if you want to experience some try the m1060, they have very wide SS
So imaging is good, but are they on par, or close, with 660’s? Looking for audiophile/gaming headphones, soundstage and bass made my wee wee hard but I do need positional accuracy for the occasional competitive FPS
Focal Elex is better. The HD 660 S are great though how he describes the sound stage is not the same way he described the HD 660 S sound stage. The HD 660 S sound closer to a monitoring headphone with a less enjoyable mid range and low end. The Focal Elex tares a new hole for enjoyment in music as these headphones are mainly focused toward.
I got these a year ago, and coming from things like the sundara, and the HD 560S. still lifechanging to this day
how do they compare to something like the LCD2 classic?
I have both. Very well imo. Great compliment to the 2C. More analytical, the soundstage is just as wide, but with no “dead zone”. The imaging is fantastic! The dynamics are insane on these too, they’re one of the most speaker like headphone I’ve heard. Easily worth the price especially at the prices they go for used.
Hi Zeos! Why you never talk about file formats, in what quality music in your playlist? If it is flac, what is the source? What do you think about MQA, which is great imo? Did you hear Tidal’s master quality albums? Will be great to have any video about that from you.
Kirill Filippov he doesn’t really believe in file formats.
He brought up DSD up once but just brushed it off.
I think Zeos believes more in “well recorded” instead of “well done file format.”
Phoenix Scp ok, but there is a huge difference between mp3 128kbit and FLAC / MQA and when Zeos say - “this DAC is amazing” I really want to know what exactly this DAC converting now. I also never use dsd, because its almost impossible to get records in this format from studio, but I can here huge difference using Tidal masters (MQA) and what is more important Tidal get those records directly from artists / studios.
These or Aeolus ?
Found a used set for 430 shipped. First time in the used market so we still see how it goes.
Nice, I once got 1990's from amazon new condition labeled "used" for 349 but I returned them for 660s which I regret
hi zeos, is elex still 600 $ worth it?
there is cracking noise on lows on high volume. is this normal ?
Are those yoga blocks? That seems to be the best use for those.
What about elex vs hd 800s? I am thinking about getting both, elex for music and hd800s for gaming. Should I? Or just get the elex for the thx aaa 789?
Elex is great for gaming, at least competitive gaming
2 rem wallpapers in a little over a week?!?! What is this madness?
Merry Christmas you funky animals
Was that the Last Starfighter theme? @13:07?
I'm considering these as an upgrade to my Grado SR325e, Hifiman HE400i and Senn's HD558, as you can see i have been stuck in the sub 400$ hell for a long time lol.
Clears ftw!
i run mine off a fiio e17 amp/dac and use tidal.... i cannot find that soundstage you are describing. It is almost always just left and right for me
I upgraded my E17 to the topping E30/L30 and the difference was night and day.
whats the song with the female singer 8:24 ? i'm going to be able to try the entire focal range this weekend as a co-worker has them all including the elexx since he has massdrop account.
nvm, i plugged in my DT1990 Pro and i was able to hear it more clearly in the video. its Lana Del Rey - Young and Beautiful. :)
On MassDrop currently for $550 and THX 789 for $279. Estimated ship date is Dec 11, 2020 PT.
Cool, now you only need to talk about the closed back Elegias :)
guys, can Elex be an upgrade from hd600??? just wondering :)
@Eric Kim thank you for your comment! Im considering buying these one or lcd2c for my upgrade from hd600 :)
How about these vs the 109's Z?
What is the difference between this and the Focal Elear? From my understanding, they use the same driver but have different pads.
What music player is that?
Elegia vs. these? Is it just a conversation of open-back vs. closed-back?
Hey Zeos, I'm probably just as much of a "gamer" as I am an... "audiophile", would these headphones work well for gaming as well? (I play Squad and Arma, stuff like that)
They are overkill for gaming but yes they definitely would sound great.
I didn't like them for gaming. Something about the upper mids are way too elevated. That might be good for hearing footsteps but it just felt like they were throwing too much sound into your ears. Like when I was playing World of Warcraft, the music was low but then when I got into combat, the sound effects were way too loud. And they sounded like they were on another layer from the music. It was making me cringe. I sold them back when I got them from the first drop so it's been a while since I heard them. I do wanna see how they are again to compare after having a few more headphones now.
@@agentorange8530 Thanks for the input; I'd probably have to hear them to be sure, like with any audio gear. I am currently running HD650s, and I personally love them, great for both music and gaming.
@@Hunterssoldier Probably would, but you never truly know until you've experienced it, and opinions also tend to vary haha. Thanks man.
So how about the LCD X’s??? How do they compare to the elex.
Alex Frei response is more accurate ...
Need these
Hey guys im back have choosen theses head set what would you guys remove from the list. Im licensing to Rap, Hiphop, Reggeaton,Trap, Spanish Music . Focal ELEX vs DT 1990 PRO, hifiman ananda, HIFIMAN SUNDARA, HD 6xx. Like some bass, vocals and highs dont like bass overpowering my music
Bump
Grabbed these for $400 a few years back on a grey market site. To this day I haven’t heard any full sized headphone under $1000 that I like better. It’s up there with Thieaudio Monarch Mk3 as my favorite audio purchase in general
I'm sure you can part with something on your wall if the Elex are that good.
Zeos has moved away from these but something about this review makes me want them just can not afford it yet
This sounds like the review the night before Zeos goes to rehab lol
25% Import tax, even if my friend send them to me from the US as a gift. That's basically adding the price of Sennheiser Jubilee's with shipping on top.
AKG's are made in Slovakia not Slovenia.... great review btw!
I kinda glad that I don't have enough money because if I had, this guy would have break my bank account to oblivion :/
It's a disease
Only shipped to US :(
Elex or Clear?! Anyone got the chance to try out both?
either.
I think I'd trade all my headphones and IEMs for the Elex
Zeos?
For the next 5 yrs you can only listen to one set of headphones. Which ones would you pick?
These. I've had them 2 days, and these, easily, wipes out most of my collection, still have genre specific cans, but the elex are the most versatile, they sound great no matter what you're listening to, something that cannot be said about most of my headphones.
So Zeos, no more LCD-2C?
Cam Ryan wonder the same
What device is that underneath his monitor ?
Audi1201 It is the RME ADI-2 DAC... the best DAC headphone amp with individualisation possibility you can get for money.
Seriously, how do they compare to the erupt's?
I'm wondering that too considering he at least implied they are still better than these. Whats the point of spending $700 on a headphone that, at most, a $400 headphone can do better
En Joshi-Godrez these are tremendously better. From other people that have tried Erupts later in the prototype phase they said they sounded almost exactly like the X2, which is not a good thing.
@Commenter Jesus, you just want to hear what you want believe don't you kid? Like fucking child. No, many people had high praise for the erupts, you would of seen this if you weren't busy trying to bullshit me about having seen any "reviews" for them (which they themselves admit is not a review because they are not the finished product). Yes, some said the bass was anemic, while others like zeos, said it was fantastic. There were even ones that said the sound stage was no better than 650's, yet zoes and company said they were the widest they heard. They were all prototypes, sooooo...non of them were the finished product. All different tuning, for the purpose of feedback so they can improve it. Why would they stop at "the youtubers" (which only zoes did one) to get feedback? You have no evidence to say otherwise, and considering for moment (something you'll never do 😂) that the erupt team them selves said so, you never will. Understand now, immoral shit bag? Or will you still go on this vandeta for the headphone that raped and killed your family. As why else would you spread flagrant lies for such a product? Who said they sounded the same as x2? Who said these were not prototypes? Who said they all had the same tuning? I'll be waiting...forever. 😂
@@commenter9703 Wow, you just can't stop telling lies. What an immoral sack of shit. 😂
En Joshi-Godrez well Zeos is a terrible reviewer anyway. But I’m not lying. Take 30s and look up their tour before you just assume I’m lying.
Now I want these but I gotta add that the Hifiman - He4XX , Sennheiser HD-6XX along with HD-58X are must own Headphones .
And all three combined are hundreds less than the Focal's .
But if these are still available after the new year I'm getting these .
Robbie Gray hifiman he400i for $160 is the deal of the century. Can’t believe how amazing they are. The detail, the bass. I use them for critical listening and they are incredible.
These or the lcd2 classics?
linuxfreak23 wonder the same
I am going to have to get my hands on a set of these at some point in time. I'll probably wait until after the "Zeos Effect" has done it's thing, and pick up a set secondhand on eBay for somewhere in the $450-$500 range.
You can buy mine, from my next of kin after I'm dead. 😜
Got a pair of these in the first drop, immediately declared all my other headphones to be trash. It wasn't even close. Paired with the Questyle CMA 400i. Godlike combo which works for pretty much any genre of music (my big three are metal, jazz, and electronic).
My friend you have my main genres right there. What other headphones that are under $300 that would be great for those genres? I have the 58X and im looking to save up for the THX amp
@@dudeekill4win Depends on what you like out of your headphones. The Massdrop x Sennheiser 58X are great headphones for the price if you prefer a dynamic; if you wanted a planar, I'd say Modhouse Argon Mk3 or Monoprice M1060C w/ a mod to remove the backs and open them up (or the M1060 if you aren't comfortable with doing the mod). Normally driving the Argons would be challenging, but the THX AAA 789 can do that quite well.
@@alessandrabenz8109 Why? The walls are pleasantly cushioned and I never have to remember to take my meds.
@@brad_wilson great,
sounds like the right place for your headphones.
and pills cool down the perception
That combo is my exact plan seeing as The Hilariously Xtremen Always Absent Amp 789 sounds to good to be true and I don't like waiting.
