Assault is definitely a pretty solid star Fox title, kind of sad that we never got a home console game like this again .
I agree Assault was great! It's too bad Nintendo would rather recycle 64 till the end of time than iterate on the things Assault did well.
@@troyjardine5850 It's a shame Nintendo's afraid of letting Star Fox become much of anything really. They're trying to treat it like Zelda or Mario, infinitely recycling the same single story, but unlike Zelda they don't have the endless options for creativity and puzzles, and unlike Mario they've never been satisfied adding small things like new power-ups or simple gimmicks. They always want a new big mechanic, when Star Fox would benefit most from a continuing story. Ironically, something Adventure, Assault, and Command showed, with a legitimately interesting story that gets me worked up about how Krystal is improperly used due to her forced involvement with Dinosaur Planet But Not Actually.
@@jackdague1792 Infinite pain. Even F-Zero's creator was like: Fuck Nintendo, they don't even want to remake one of my games. Dude straight up retired.
The star fox series could easily become the next Battlefront type game if it had a dedicated online experience. It has probably the biggest potential to be anything because the series has yet to really try to step outside it’s formula. Assault had an amazing multiplayer experience albeit it needed major fine tuning but it was definitely a step in the right direction. It just sucks it came out so late in the GameCubes life as well as it coming out the same time as battlefront 2.
@@allhailbottomtiers9582 Hell you could make a refined standard shooter and parts in the level where you command the pilots to break down defenses or blow up your enemy encampments.
Feels like if they left Zelda in Zelda 2 and was lile "Any change is BAD!"
You should 100% do a full play-through. The music is amazing throughout, the story is pretty compelling, and it's that long of a game. There are some definite character moments and boss battles that are right up there with the best of the series.
Also Wolf's design and voice actor are both terrific in this game.
i agree
I concur, i remember the final boss just withering me when i was younger.
@@Subject_Keter my gamer rite of passage was beating that aparoid queen. I really need to replay the whole thing on Gold, it was impossible for me as a kid
Wolf's VA is the Engineer in TF2, too!
I can only second this times 100
Wolf is hilarious in this game.
“I’m owed an apology.”
“That’s easy to say after all you’ve done.”
YOU MEAN WORKING ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE WAR WE WERE IN? YOU TRIED TO KILL ME FOR MONEY.
Wolf's always been an unapologetic asshole.👍
Assault is a sequel to Adventures, yep.
But it’s not an *immediate* sequel; Krystal’s been on the team for a while now. Dunno if it’s months or years, but it’s more than days.
5 years after adventures
I swear it’s only 1 year after. Fox still looks to be in his twenties (18 in 64 and eight year timeskip to Adventures).
@@rafacastillo9611 2 not 5
It's 1 year after Adventures, but for the Star Fox team, that's plenty of time to get someone up to speed in flying
Ah yes Starfox Assault, a game that I respect cause it tries to move beyond the original Lylat Wars plot unlike about half the games in this franchise.
It was still pretty fun and improved the infantry game.
Don't know if you or whoever makes your thumbnails reads these comments but this one is sick. looks amazing along with all the recent ones with the similar style.
Thank you so much man! You're too kind! :D
Criminally underrated game, people who say 64 was the only good starfox game should be smacked with a copy of this. Also multiplayer was a blast.
Agreed
I never even knew about this game. It looks solid as
Please play more, this is my favorite Star Fox and it’s so damn underrated!
And honestly, a remake of this game would be stellar if you give the on foot combat controls similar to Splatoon (Nintendo only shooter they’re comfortable with).
Assault will always hold a spot in my heart because of the boss fight in Corneria with Wolf it felt so cool if my memory is still right
Man that mission was a pain I was stuck on it for ages. Probably cause it was on-rails so you couldn't dodge the projectiles and had to shoot them
Corneria mission is such a huge pain in the ass, on harder difficulties, complete game overs were the worst because of said boss. that said. yes it is a very cool and memorable moment
so a few fun notes on Krystal for those scrolling through the comments
Krystal was actually a trained pilot before Adventures, and isnt from Sauria(or Dinosaur Planet for anyone not on a wiki) she's actually from a seperate planet nowhere near the Lylat System named Cerinia, which is NEVER mentioned in any game, just the instruction booklet from Adventures(they also dont mention that *her entire planet had all life wiped out* just that her parents are dead)
after the events of Assault, Fox decides that fighting was "too dangerous" and discharges her from the team, she then leaves and joins Star Wolf and starts fucking Panther. from here there's a few paths;
1 Fox says sorry and she INSTANTLY dumps Panther to get back with him, and the plotline is her being mad at Fox still but slowly getting over it
2 Fox doesnt say sorry but she rejoins Starfox to fight the BBEG, later on her and Fox hook up and have a kid named Marcus
3 she doesnt rejoin Starfox, and instead leads Star Wolf to saving the galaxy from the BBEGs, which gets the bounty on Star Wolf removed and they start getting treated as Heroes... but for some reason she gets branded a traitor. she then leaves Star Wolf to become a Bounty Hunter and changes her name to Kursed. Fox meets Kursed later and doesnt recognize her at all
lmao wtf. Command is wild. i was all in ending 3 in the first half, but the second half, lol what
That's some juicy lore.
LORE, IT'S REAL~!!!
This game has some really cool shit later on. A full playthrough would be sick
4:23 according to the back of the game case "One year has passed since disaster was averted on Sauria (the events of StarFox Adventures)"
Also interesting is that during the events of Assault, Fox and slippy are aged 27, Krystal is 20, Peppy is 50 and Falco is 28.
This come from the official Japanese StarFox adventures website where they disclosed their ages and even released a manga that takes place 4 years after StarFox 64 and 4 years before Adventures.
So yeah, apparently within a year, a teenage Krystal went from tribal girl to piloting a ship keeping up with the StarFox team.
Fun fact: This game was developed by Project Aces; yes, the Ace Combat team. It was part of the partnership between Nintendo, Sega, and Namco that led to the creation of the Gamecube-based Triforce arcade board; the very same board that runs F-Zero AX and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom. Naturally this meant there was an arcade version planned, but that ended up getting scrapped as development dragged on for the home version and they had to go through at least one revision of the game, maybe more but I haven't looked into it too deeply.
This could make for a neat What Happun, depending on how much information you'd be able to gather on it. Nintendo does like to be pretty tight-lipped about things and all.
lol no it wasn't. It was developed by people who worked on the Klonoa games. The Ace Combat developers never actually had anything to do with this game beyond the arcade tie-in that got scrapped.
Absolute favourite Star Fox game. Music is *hugely* underrated, and man once you turn on the stick-aiming controls the on foot stuff feels waaaay better. The multiplayer is still great too, wish the maps like Zoness and Titania were finished as campaign levels.
I loved this game, but it got really repetitive towards the end..
Weird take... very repetative, plot doesnt make sense...
I agree
@@herrikudo yes, calling it nonsensical *is* a weird take.
My only issue with stick aiming is that hitting R for shots feels a bit odd with the springy GCN shoulder button.
Genuinely my favorite Starfox game, severely underrated
I'll just a point out Krystal's home planet got destroyed so she clearly knows how to pilot a ship otherwise she can't just fly through space on the back of a dinosaur.
The most dramatic Star Fox, and I enjoyed every bit of it. So much so that when I was about to land the final shot to the final boss, a blackout happened.
My favorite star fox game ever, I demand a remaster with online multi-player, with lobbies as big as 50 players
Finally, we get a glimpse of Matt's fursona
ok it looks badass
I believe that this game's soundtrack was recorded by the tokyo philharmonic orchestra and that's why it's do good.
The main difference between Krystal and Deanna Troi is Krystal is actually useful.
Also nice to see people still play StarFox Assault. It has literally never been re-released since the GameCube. Hell Command, the Fandom's trigger warning, got re-released on for some reason.
Wait.. where and how was Command rereleased?
@@whoeverest_the_whateverest It came out on the WiiU the same day SF Zero released.
Smash Bros. Melee was my introduction to a bunch of Nintendo franchises, which inspired me to try out games like Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and this game, Star Fox Assault.
I remember enjoying it quite a lot, the air combat was a lot of fun and the on-foot stuff isn't... terrible but it wasn't really my favorite, kinda wish they tried this kind of gameplay style again, if Nintendo ever feels like making a new sequel.
Omg same but instead it was Brawl.
Definitely would love to see you continue this playthrough! Assault gets way too much unnecessary hate. Was it different due to on-foot and whatnot? Yeah, but it was still a blast to play. Story was great, character development and emotional moments abound. We need another one like this. And the multiplayer was fun as hell too. Brothers and I clocked countless hours
I find it hilarious that matt brings up the borg at the beginning, this game is literally about the star fox universe's version of the borg.
It's worth a playthrough.
and the multiplayer was actually the best part of this game
use to play the shit out of both when i was younger XD
Yeah , this video took me back. Played so much Star Fox Assault growing up. A Starfox collection would be so sick.
“Fox McCloud going commando” Matt don’t tease me like this
I guess I am the resident Gundam nerd here. The High Grade and Real Grades are 1/144th scale. The Master Grades and Reborn 100 are 1/100th scale. And Perfect Grades are 1/60th scale. Given this is a functional “Gundam” we can assume that it is a 1/1 scale, given that, it would more then likely be a No Grade that doesn’t really fall under the limitations of Bandai’s traditional “grade” system.
As a fellow gundam nerd I approve of this assessment
As a fellow Gundam nerd, I christen this specific example as a "Mashymre Cello" grade Gundam.
As a fellow Gundam nerd I’d agree with your no grade assessment but however I’d classify the mecha in question as simply a mobile suit. As it does not posses any of the characteristics that a Gundam typically possesses, mainly the samurai esque horns.
I liked this game pretty well, though I felt like the on-foot levels needed a bit more variety. Almost all of them were a variant on the "destroy the hatchers" objective, and mostly used the same maps as the multiplayer stages instead of more unique environments suited for a campaign.
GO FOR THE 4 HATCHES ON THE UNDERSIDE
THE HATCHES ARE OPEN
@@RainingMetal Yeah, that one's pretty bad (and the fight with Star Wolf is kind of underwhelming), the Sauria mission mostly feels like filler, the Corneria mission where you have to snipe the targets is a pain (and it's the one level where you never get your own vehicle, yet are still expected to defend your stupid squadmates WHILE ON FOOT).
Yeah, the on-foot stages aren't bad like people say, but they were definitely implemented sloppily. I adore the whole "You can go from feet to Arwing to Landmaster whenever you want" concept, and it was woefully underutilized in the way the missions were structured.
Me and my friends spent literally HUNDREDS of hours playing this games multi-player. I can't overstate enough how much fun this was back in the day! Couldn't play M rated games or first person shooters so this was the next best thing!
Star Fox Assault is the best Star Fox game and I'll never apologize for that take. Best Arwing gameplay, surprisingly good plot, and passable on-foot and Landmaster gameplay
I always wished this had gotten a "New Play Control!" Wii version, using on-foot controls akin to the Wiimote + Nunchuck ones in Nintendo Land's Metroid Blast.
Oh yeah would love to see more, its got some great scenes.
Absolutely!
If you like Star Wolf & Wolf O'Donnell, you owe yourself a full playthrough of this game, just saying. This is liable to be the game where they get the most screen time outside of their own scenarios in Command (which is worse than this game). It also has some of the best music in the entire series (in spite of some not liking the slower, more dramatic score), and the MP was legitimately a blast to play with friends, especially once you got most things unlocked.
Star Fox Assault was my first Star Fox game, as such it is definitely my favorite.
I loved Assault so much as a kid. Maybe I was just starved for another good Star Fox game after Adventure just didn't scratch that itch, but it was everything I wanted as a kid. Maybe part of that was just because I played the flying sections on repeat a lot so I remember the best parts of it more.
This video unlocked a core memory for me, I forgot that Assault existed!
StarFox Assault is such a great game. I hope to see you stream more StarFox content!
I loved this game back in the day, including the on-foot gameplay. That was most of what I played honestly, in multiplayer with my brother and our friends. It was a blast making different rulesets and just going to town.
I'd love to see more of this on the channel, I think it's underrated.
Also, for the record, charge the blaster, it's far more efficient. A max charge shot is equal to a Landmaster shot.
I think they're called Nova Bombs in StarFox 64. And wow, totally missed this one, gonna have to try it.
Yes! A Star Fox collection would be so dope. Could you imagine Star Fox Assault with online multiplayer?
I honestly think that a remaster of this game with better land controls wound be amazing. While I love the game when i was younger, I will admit that the land-master controls were... a thing that exist.
Always loved Star Fox Assault. I used to rent it all the time from Hollywood Videos. I have to say that it's probably my favorite in the series, despite the flaws.
Man this game is so fun, it's my favorite Star Fox, I've always wanted another Star Fox game like this one, would love to see you to do a full play through.
The multiplayer mark my childhood! One of the best one on GC hands down.
The literal only reason for the war Mat, is because it's a reference to the Japanese idiom, "fighting like dogs and monkeys".
love star fox assault. Instantly being able to fly and land battle is so much fun once you get use to controls. Plus the cutscense are so awesome.
I think the only reason it got a bad rep was people who didn't play it or touch it for 5min, and thought it be kool to hate on it cause it wasn't traditional.
More of this game please, it’s major nostalgia for me
Mat, best creator of the RUclips system. The evil scientist google turned this once green channel into a wasteland of near extinction.
Whether you like Assault or not pretty much determines whether you're a StarFox fan or just a StarFox 64 fan. And yeah, there's a huge difference between the two.
TRUTH!!
It is great to see videos on Assault! It is my favorite Star Fox game and one of my favorite games of all time. It is great to see it getting attention again!
this had the greatest video game score of any nintendo game. you gotta keep playing this
When he abreviated Matty Fatty as MatFat I seriously expected some kind of Matpat / Game Theory joke.
My favorite Star Fox game hands down. I love the gameplay variation and the enemy faction and story
Krystal actually ISN'T from Dinosaur Planet. Her home world was destroyed, and we see her ship at the end of Adventures
My favorite star fox game :)
I think its super underrated
“I don’t know who’s in charge of Star Fox.” That’s honestly a significant part of the problem. Nobody’s really in charge of it. Miyamoto I think is a big supporter, but they really don’t know what to do with Star Fox, which sucks because there’s so much potential, but Star Fox keeps getting relegated to being a small time franchise, but it could be so much more.
Maybe one day… a collection game would be sick, I’d buy 8 copies
Oh hell yeah! I’d love to see you go through the rest of it! It’s pretty short but really fun but that learning curve does not let up
Matt's reaction to Krystal retiring reminds me of that one line from Antfish's JoJo Part 3 Abridged where it's like, "We can't lose Kakyoin! He's the only reason women watch this show!"
The graphics on this are still nice! This game was so short I remember. I feel like they were so close to getting it right with this!
I remember this game's controls took some getting used to, I used the controls where you pressed the R shoulder button to run and felt it worked out for me... as for that temple level you mentioned, there's a fun easter egg I also remember about... aside from it being the now-named "Sauria", AKA "Dinosaur Planet", one of the flying enemies looks a heck of a lot like a Galaga enemy... because Namco.
That said, it's interesting seeing Namco go from making this, to later help make Smash 4 and Ultimate.
Starfox 64 is the GOAT, Assault takes second for me. Haven't played the newest one yet.
Assault was good and the clear story arc was ok, but in many cases, some of the weapons felt a little weak.
Imo the most underrated game on the GameCube it was short and the foot missions weren’t for everyone but man my first start fox game and I enjoy it a ton this game this more appreciation and a remake
Yeah, this is actually a really solid Star Fox game. Most of the problems with the on-foot missions come down to the controls being unwieldy, but otherwise the level design is actually fun. It's something they could have improved in subsequent games if they had stick with the idea and iterated on it instead of... Well, all the other BS they tried to implement in Command and Zero.
I always thought thier backpacks looked like the tops of a gamecube.
You're not alone! :)
I you really like Star Fox you might as well do a full playthrough. Even if you don't like all of the levels, the final level is entirely in the Arwing so it should be worth it. If you can figure out how the radar works you should be fine, anyway. I think small dots represent foes on a different elevation.
I truly love this game. Absolutely has the flaws as seen in this very playthrough, like the confusing progression and systems, the second level in particular being quite long. But it's one of the best looking GameCube games at 60fps, and the first orchestrated soundtrack for a Nintendo game! Good multiplayer too. It obviously paled compared to all the other hit multiplayer games of 2004-5, but I always appreciated Namcos efforts in this.
Assault was my fucking JAM dude. Got me into texture hacking, inspired so much of my current projects, and is my favorite Star Fox game after 643D (sorry 64, you don't have Gyro and I can't play you on the shitter. You can be 3rd, but it's a very close third.)
Fun fact! The characters are much more expressive in the Japanese briefing scenes!
I would be down for more of this, this game kicks all kinds of ass.
The best starfox game hands down.
star fox assault is by far the best in terms of gameplay even the on foot sections, and the voice acting is pretty good too way better then the original cast.
the only downside is that theres no other story missions where you control other characters or branching paths, it makes this game feel seriously rushed unfortunately
Well it is a port of an arcade game by Namco.
The voice acting hasn't been good since DAB BUBUH DEB WUB? MRRR RRR RB WING DAMAGE *wet lettuce noises *
The absense of branching paths is good, they only served to break the story with very little replay value
so the complaints are mainly around the foot missions? and maybe the weird dialogue? otherwise its pretty solid. i enjoyed the on foot missions alot, except for corneria, that shit is a pain in the ass. i will agree that there are too many when compared to on rails space missions
I have nothing but fond memories of this game.
I love me some Star Fox Assault, is from the Ace Combat team so that's why the music is incredible.
I loved Star Fox Assault. I replayed it a lot. It came at a really bad time in my life and it helped me through it. Although I do feel there were too many on foot missions when I craved Arwing flight. And best voicing goes to Falco and Peppy with Fox and Krystal following behind and yes even Slippy was good. Honestly it wasn't all bad. That change with Leon from 64 was a bit jarring though. Probably the worst voicing was the generic characters. I'd replay it again today if I had the means. I got a copy still but no way to play.
I still believe in Assault as an evolution of the Star Fox formula. Just make it 3rd person Halo but with fast tanks and a lot more flying (with linear on-rail sections to tie main areas together). I had a lot of fun with this as a kid but it definately holds up worse than I remember. But it's not like original Star Fox is such a great concept to begin with it just controlled well and had replay value. But the unique characters/world/style are still untapped for more games. It just needs one modern success story to see it get the resources/team it deserves for something like pure reboot/reimagining.
The Nintendo/Sega/Namco Triforce partnership...imagine if Sega was given the Star Fox license and Namco the F Zero license instead. Makes you wonder how things would have turned out.
i'm so glad we finally got to see matt mcmuscles' fursona
They hate the apes because the conflict in Star Fox is based on a Japanese colloquism about fighting like "dogs and monkeys". Similar to the American saying "fighting like cats and dogs"
Ah yes, the last GOOD Star Fox game. I managed to get S Rank on every level/boss and unlocked all the stuff for Multiplayer, felt like quite the accomplishment back then when the Game Cube came out.
it was kinda nuts to see Wolf be the absolute speediest character you can unlock in multiplayer while also understandably Peppy and Slippy were best at jumping... and having levels exclusive to multiplayer we never got to see in story mode like Zoness
@@SorcererLance Good point, I noticed that back then too. Although, I also recall wishing Leon was available for multiplayer. Still not bad at all what we got, and still better than Zero or Command. I don't see why they go back to that (SF Assault) formula and just expand upon it.
yeeea, unlocking wolf and the wolfen for multiplayer. unlocking all the maps. it felt great finding all the secrets
@@sataruyamate4438 Mhm, and if I remember right, achieving S rank on all the levels was pretty challenging too. Very satisfying.
I’ve only played assault once at a target back when they had the demos you’d look up at as a baby child
Edit: damn Matt pretty much said the same thing 😂
Star Fox Assault was a great game, I wish they'd make a follow-up and get inspiration from Starlink.
Please play more of this it's actually my favorite star fox it needs more love
This Matfat speaks the truth. Make a Star Fox Collection, Nintendo!
"Nintendo never really went much into the whole race war"
Except they totally did. Andross the monkey scientist was trying to create bioweapons of mass destruction so he was exiled to Venom, so he riled up all monkeys to fight the "dogs" that banished him...mostly mercenaries for some reason. Andross turned it into a race war, it's that simple.
"They're not the borg"
Yeah because the borg is coming later the first mission lol.
Yes please play more of this nostalgic game. ^^
God that Star Fox-esque design for Matt's skeleton is so damn cool.
Best Star Fox game of all time
I never did get to play this. Looks like a real hoot! They really *should* put out a collection, here.
Also the editing on this video is so clean! Top notch stuff
We do get the Borg in this game, lol. The Aparoids.
I love Assault! I might replay it soon, it has been ages since i last played it
I think this is the best in the series and im not afraid to say it lol
"I don't know what Falco's doing."
Clearly, he's busy rocking me (Amadeus).
Krystal piloted a Pterosaur, can't be too hard to train her for starships
I personally liked Star fox assault it was really awesome and tons of fun
What I wouldn't give for another Star Fox game like this. Even with the wonky controls for the on-foot missions, Assault's my favorite entry in the series. The flying sections rule, the multiplayer is some of the most fun I had on the Gamecube, and I just respect that it actually moved the story forward. Plus the music is just fantastic.
A sequel building off this game (or heck, even a remake) could be so good.
Oh my god this brought back so many good memories of this game! I never understood the hate that came from it I was literally a little kid when this release and I loved it! I even loved how dark it was and I am still mad to this day that I never finished it and I was on the final level! I really really hope that Nintendo will one day re-release this or remake it or just add it in the timeline because this game was amazing I loved the story and the multiplayer and Matt if you play through this whole game I will watch every single video you make because man I love this game 🥰
We hate Slippy, because we all know we would be Slippy... 😐
Star Fox Command was nuts all the different characters and endings...and canonically it's the most recent.
Maybe it's nostalgia...but I remember enjoying it.
