  • Henryk Wieniawski (1835-1880) was a Polish violinist and composer. He was a precocious prodigy who entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of eight and toured Europe and America as a performer at the age of 13. To perform his virtuosity, he created a series of new pieces, which he performed at concerts and became famous for.
Although he left only two concertos, some people call him the 'Chopin of the violin', as he left many pieces incorporating mazurkas and polonaises.
Scherzo-tarantelle op. 16, is one of his best-known works for violin and piano.
The three-part form of the work demands smooth bowing and combines heavy notes and flageolet, making it a showcase for violin technique.
The piano begins with a tarantella rhythm in octaves, while the violin plays with spectacular virtuosity: the six-degree harmony requires smooth transposition on the violin, and is interspersed with many elaborate techniques, including the occasional combination of overtones and fragile fragilets. The middle section is a gentle section in G major and D major, with the violin playing an almost song-like melody. For violinists, this is a highly effective piece to play, not only to show off their technique, but also to demonstrate their musicality and beautiful tone.

Very nicely played. The bow lift at the double stops was particularly well done with a smooth, clean - and quite immediate attack.
    Playing it is challenge enough.
    Imagine writing it!
So many of the virtuoso violinist/composers left us with some amazing music.
You staged it very nicely as well.
Too bad that the klutzy microphones and stands had to be there.
Compliments to the pianist as well.

I had commented on the full performance, which I watched again.
As you note, it is lively, complicated and beautiful.
Since you like voice, watch Mario Lanza sing Rossini's version.
His Nessun Dorma is my favorite by far.
Another tongue-twister is Rossini's Largo al factotum, a wonderful chance for fun acting as well as for virtuoso singing.
There's a great clip from a film featuring Gino Becchi in the role of the barber with a brief shot of Tito Gobbi.
While I'm on an operatic journey, the famed duet from Pearl Fishers has only one version as far as I'm concerned: Bjoerling/Merrill.
Lily Pons as Lakmé in Air des Clochettes? I fell in love immediately!
Check the film clip from 1938 for an interesting wardrobe.
Massenet's interlude from Thaïs brings us back to the violin.

Thanks for watching the full version again. And thank you for your insightful comments and recommendations!!! Your suggestions are truly appreciated, and I will definitely explore the operatic pieces you mentioned. I look forward to visiting the 1938 film clip. It's fascinating how music can take us on such a diverse journey, from the violin to the human voice and back. Your operatic journey has inspired me to delve deeper into these works, and I hope to incorporate this rich vocal expressiveness into my violin performances. Thank you once again for sharing your passion for music with me!

Rachmaninov's Vocalise was written for voice, of course.
The arrangement for violin is equally nice, although the cello has been said to be the closest duplicate to human voice.
From steel drums to the didgeridoo to the ocarina, pan flute or gourd maracas, man has been making music in a variety of ways for a long time.
Benny Goodman's 1938 Sing, Sing, Sing is a superb example of 'ensemble playing' as well as improv - what we 'stuffy' classical players call 'cadenzas'.
The staccato 'flamenco' is expanded with 'tap'.
The waltz can be Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, or Shostakovich.
      It's all music.

Read the history of Turandot for a romp through philosophy, history, music and more.
Puccini hit the bigtime, but others also wrote music.
I love Hindemith's Symphonic Variations on von Weber's Turandot theme.
      Hindemith was a violist!

It's fascinating to reflect on the versatility of music and how it transcends different instruments and genres. Rachmaninov's Vocalise does indeed possess a universal beauty, whether it's performed with the human voice or transcribed for violin or cello. The comparison of musical instruments to the human voice is particularly intriguing, as each instrument brings its unique color and emotion to a piece. Your mention of various instruments and styles, from the rhythmic energy of flamenco to the elegance of a waltz by Strauss or Shostakovich, truly captures the essence of music's diversity. It's a reminder that music, in all its forms, is a language that speaks directly to the soul! And I receive performance and video making ideas from you. Thank you!

Hindemith's background as a violist certainly brought a unique perspective to his work. Your appreciation for these musical connections enriches the conversation around classical music. Thank you for sharing!
