    Before everyone and their mother decides to spam the comments section: At 2:28, I meant to call this a 2-way speaker. This what happens when you shoot videos without a script and don't really care about production value.

    This was just a great review, Sean. I’m sure you saw that Steve G. just did a vid about how there’s really no just plain bad sounding spkrs really any longer, which you obviously brought up here too. I agree with that, and I think that’s such a wonderful thing. The same seems to be happening with electronics too, with companies like Schiit offering pretty damn good stuff for the money. It’s great that true HiFi has become accessible to the masses. Of course, you can completely up your HiFi gear game and sound, but that’s where the big money comes into play.

    great review. i really appreciate how you accommodated current debut owners and those who are not familiar. i also really appreciated your input on recommended equipment. i really like reviews, but always struggle with "how does it relate to my setup and my budget". would it be possible to do a part 2 vid to maybe give recommendation or share your thoughts on a recommendation of a 25% step down and 25% step up in cost, but similar sound...or what u gain or lose with cost? in general, i think a 2 part review in most typical reviewers vids would helpful. a general review for masses, but another for more in depth for whatever you or viwers wants to go deeper for those wanting more??? i think u did a great job of covering different angles in your review...and i think u often have enough info for 2 parts rather than trying to squeeze into one. btw, thnx for your vids!

    Thorough review. Kudos to Elac and AJ for the continuous improvement to the Debut line of speakers. However, I have the Debut 2.0 speakers and it doesn't appear that the DR is enuf of an upgrade to justify the price (I got the 2.0 L/C/R for around $300) difference. I'd really like to see Elac improve the Uni-Fi line as a legitimate step up from the DR series which, by recent accounts, it is not anymore. Carina ? Just hasn't made a big impact as yet in the marketplace and there is a lot of good sounding options from other manufacturers before you get to the Carina price point. Hope for some encouraging news in April from Elac at Axpona !!!

    Based on this and other RUclips reviews....
    I just bought a pair of these from Elac Canada. First ... any picture on the internet does not do them justice.
    2nd ... they are a heavy speaker for their size. 3rd .... they sound simply amazing considering price. 4th .. They
    pair up with amazing well with all of my amp/combos (Rotel/Adcom - Denon AVR - Big Chinese tuber/Yaquin).
    These were purchased as interim speakers until I can afford a set of something dreamy (Harbeth etc) but I'll
    tell ya ..... at mid/low volume (my preference) they sound amazing. Now - with my equipment they will reveal
    a poorly recorded piece but they are forgiving to a degree. Andrew Jones has hit a home run (again) and I've
    got a feeling he'll be at bat for a long time.

    Nice review, they've definitely improved the aesthetics (and apparently the sound as well). A lot of competition at that price point though. I wonder how they would compare to something like the Wharfedale Diamond 225, which can be had for half the price and seem to be going for a similar sound signature.

    Hi Sean,
    I was eager to hear your thoughts on the DBR62 speakers. I purchased them, listened to them for a while, but I ultimately ended up sending them back. What I liked was the treble presentation (good detail retrieval without being fatiguing) and I liked the soundstage as well (really wide - tall -deep) projecting far beyond the boundaries of the physical cabinets. To my ears, the bass was decent (not overpowering but not underwhelming either). I thought the weak point, at least what I heard, was thinness in the lower midrange/upper bass response. At the time, I was comparing the ELAC Debut Reference to the Polk LSiM703, KEF Q150, and the Triangle Borea BR03 and, in the end, I felt that the Borea BR03 were the best of the group for my purposes. Obviously, this is very subjective as we have different ears, listening rooms, and gear driving the speakers/in the chain.
    Unfortunately, the vinyl wrap on the DBR62 was pretty cheap - the seam on the bottom of the speaker was obvious and it seemed "bubbly" in a few spots on the sides of the cabinets. The fit and finish on the KEF, Triangle, and (especially) the Polk was much better. Maybe not a dealbreaker for some but it was a sore point for me.
    Anyway, thank you for your review, and for your advice on getting the most out of them, much appreciated!

    • @wswsn7396
      @wswsn7396 Год назад

      These Elac speakers are lazy. They need decent amp to drive them. Most AVR can not drive them to full potential. With my Denon x4000 with 125W, they can be thin sounding. However with a Sonoamp 260 with 60W amplifier, they sound much fuller, why? because this amp has power reserve and stable at 4 ohm load or even at 2.8 ohm load. Most AVR are not 4 ohm stable, you can connect lazy speakers, however, they will sound thin. Because these speaker's resistant drops to less than 4 ohm between 100 to 200Hz, requires double amount of current to drive the woofer. Most AVR can not double the current, so the speakers sound thin.

    Ben looking foward to this one since I was so wowed when I got the original B6 and then the front porting and smoothing out of the 6.2 made them worth going to hear.But here the clips I heard from Fremmer on Stereophile were amazing.Question for me would be whats the longer term satisfaction as a daily driver these or the Klipsch rp600?Guess a decision there could be based on what you have to get them going because as you mentioned the Unifi needs a bit of volume even nearfield and these seem like perhaps a better option for the 50+ WPC at a distance whereas the Unifi might go better on the desk.Funny Jones seems to kick out these amazing low cost speakers (Pioneer SP BS21,Elac Debut/Unifi over achieving KEF LS50 etc) but seems to have come up luke warm with the Adante AS61.Had more expectation of those then just about anything I have heard was coming out and while these not exactly "Meh" I agreed with a lot of reviewers who thought that given size and $2500 you thought there would be more there (especially in bass).Kind of like a good tasting soup that just isn't quite warm enough to fully enjoy.I'd recommend these for a reasonably priced good pair of speakers for your civilian friend but I might want the jump of the Klipsch since I have better primary monkey coffins

    • @ZeroFidelity
      @ZeroFidelity  4 года назад +1

      I won't as I don't have them in for review. The simple answer is this: The Debut is warm, balanced, and fairly easy on the ears. The UB5 is where you begin to embrace more of Andrew Jones's sound. It's more forward, the upper midrange is more prominent, its not 'warm' so much as it is more dynamic and lean sounding. What you will ultimately prefer will hinge on taste.

Are the Marantz amps more powerul in the real world than their figures suggest?? I hope its enough to drive the Elacs well.

I am interested in getting these and i am not going to be marrying them to ten thousand dollar Amps or fifteen thousand dollar Dacs and sitting in my Man space all day just listening to my music. I do however love my music and the way my space looks and was looking for a speaker that did not alter the music that much after going through a DAC already. I passed on buying RP-600M's to get a pair of these instead. I use them in a 2.1 set up for AV and Music very much like Sean talked about in his review. I would very much like to echo his remarks about how good these are with "bad" sound sources. In my case I dump music into these via an NAD D3045/Schitt Vidar with a plain old $8 12 foot usb cable coming off an iMac using only iTunes/Apple Music and astonishingly it's so pleasant to listen to that I find myself using it all the time. My TV audio is just a plain toslink. I have them in white(which I never get tired of looking at) and I do have to say that they also benefit from IsoAcoustics stands(the cheaper plastic ones). They replaced Dali Menuets which couldn't do movies justice given the room size(medium). Dali's feature much better highs than the Debut References but they also cost 2x more. My Debuts are close to the wall(about 14 inches) and the imaging didn't feel right until I replicated Elac's room setup guide and toed them in A LOT. Along with a cheap, ten year old Polk subwoofer, the Debut References give me the BIG sound I desire and I can put a Nolan Batman movie on and just lit it rip. The Debut Reference are an IDEAL first purchase speaker.

    • @ZeroFidelity

      @@ZeroFidelity Menuets are some kind of HiFi version of a gateway drug. Once you know how good they are they always seem to find their way back out of the box and into another setup as time goes on. Coming up on ten years with mine and I've just paired them with an NAD C368 and a REL sub in a bedroom. "Double Negative" by Low is one of the few times I've ever heard them falter. If you know Dali do try to cover Rubicon 2's. I use them in my main system and they are as close to that Guttenberg "last speaker" as I've ever been. They're so close to what the Epicons can do it's amazing. A couple of weeks ago I auditioned Epicon 2's with an Octave amp and now I no longer feel the need to upgrade and that setup only made me miss my Supernait. I've also learned over the years that to get the very best of that Dali sweetness and clarity, Audience Ohno cables are the "secret" ingredient. I've experienced this with multiple setups now.

      StreamC Noremorse These speakers are so forgiving for poor recordings they are amazing. I was very skeptical when I bought the Denon because I was more interested in sound quality than I was connectivity with my TV, even though I wanted both. The specs on the Denon were great and I was surprised when it arrived and I listened to the whole system. I spent the whole evening going from one genre to another. I’m still blown away by its performance, even though I read a lot of reviews that advise audiophiles to stay away from AV receivers. Here’s my deal. I gave $209 for the speakers and $300 for the Denon. For $500 I have blown my friends and family away with the overall quality of sound. I made my own speaker wires with some good quality OFC 12 wire and good set of banana plugs.
      At my age, I put this system together to simplify my life. I have owned box cars full of high end gear over the years and just wanted a simple, great sounding system that also works for an AV system. The matching of amps to speakers can be a very touchy subject but I feel like I hit a home run here. It just works. IMO, these “budget” speakers are serious overachievers. I listen nightly and go from Nat King Cole to Robin Trower and enjoy every note. If you are a budget minded audiophile , you are living in the best of times and pure joy can be achieved without taking a second mortgage. Bang for the Buck is my mantra and I ( IMO) think I hit a home run.

    I've been waiting a while for reviews of this speaker to surface. This is excellent.
    Two things.
    First, in your opinion, does this render the UNIFI-UB 5/51 irrelevant?
    Second, why not set-up a standardized bookshelf test rig with a pair of tall, open side-walled storage units. They could be spaced appropriately from the sides of a theoretical 65 inch flatscreen hdtv location.
    Many speakers are sold as bookshelf configured but reviewers usually gloss over that use and promote stand mounting. IMHO, I feel there are a lot of people whom either now currently live in small spaces or are considering down-sizing that would really like to know more about these types of speakers
    compared to each other in an environment for which they were designed or will be purchased.

    Sean can you elaborate on low efficiency speakers? I have a pair of UB5 which have 85dB sensitivity. I'm running them with a 150W NAD C372 and I only listen at moderate volumes. But what would be the consequences if I used them with a low power amp? Say I got a IOTAVX SA3? or a Marantz PM5005 at 40W?

    • @ZeroFidelity
      @ZeroFidelity  4 года назад

      Just means you won't be able to play at the same loud volumes or to enjoy the same dynamic output that you'd get from a higher power amp. Whether or not you'll notice will hinge exclusively on how loud you listen.

    I'm finding it hard to believe that the cabinet alone caused these speakers to double in price. The drivers look the same as in the b6 2.0, terminals look the same. Could it be in the crossover? Hard to say. But do they sound twice as good as the ELAC B6 2.0 ? I already have the B6 2.0 and was trying to figure out if the extra 300 is worth the upgrade. I believe that ive seen a very similar waveguide in another brand of speakers. Maybe, Monitor Audio Silver series?

    I have the original Debut B6s. You mentioned saving the money to upgrade a tier or two above this, what would you recommend in that regard? I really like the sound of the B6 and recently got the Klipsch RP-600M but also returning due then sound a bit bright and also I’m getting some distortion/fanning effect on vocals in rap music. Intended to get these instead but now I’m curious what I could get a tier or two above and just save up for a little bit.

    • @ZeroFidelity
      @ZeroFidelity  4 года назад +4

      P5-'s? In the overall sense yes. The P5's do have slightly better off-axis performance as well as a slightly more pure sounding midrange. Debuts References take it in most other areas. The BRO3's are monsters. Will make a separate video for that comparison (along with the Klipsch).

      They don’t neeed to be pulled out 2-3ft, he suggests it to get the ‘best’ sound performance..normal living situations don’t usually accommodate speakers 3ft from the wall, let’s be real..it would look ridiculous and it’s not practical..
