Unpopular opinion: perhaps putting Northmoor in the NSC *is* the most humane option. We know that Northmoor absorbed so much power and bound himself to too many powers that his temperature has become "unnatural" or "impossible" to the point he became nuclear.
Considering the size of the Oldest House transcends the confines of its outer appearance, the interior almost resembles a small city (when you consider the size of the Panopticon, the AWE staging areas in both Research an Investigation sectors and other larger areas). As Doctor Who would say: "it's bigger on the inside". Most industrialized cities need about 500-1500MW (megawats) of power on average (I looked it up :) ), and since the Oldest House is storing paranormal Altered Items, I would say the power usage is on the higher end of that scale. Since Northmoor is generating enough energy to power the Oldest House completely before the Hiss invasion (which means the Oldest House was fully staffed and operational), that means Northmoor is outputting enough power similar to a typical nuclear power plant.
Now, if Northmoor was set free, where would he go? His temperature and/or radiation output would be devastating to any city he may find himself in. He would poison entire populations as well as the wider environment. You can't throw him into the ocean as it would devastate the oceanic life. You can't exactly strap him on a rocket and launch him into space - that would raise the suspicions of the worldwide space agencies and then the FBC would have to answer a ton of questions. Plus, if Northmoor felt he was above the "typical rules", there's no way of knowing if he would even adhere to any strict conditions of his release and would probably go where he pleases. He may even try to strike back at the FBC.
And, if Northmoor died, there's no way of knowing if his body would cool down to "normal" temperatures in any reasonable amount of time.
In reality, Northmoor put the FBC in a position where they didn't know what to do with him. He was a danger to those around him as well as the NYC community. They needed somewhere to put him to keep everyone safe. Plus, they need to siphon off his energy output so as not to have too much buildup of pressure in the NSC.
Putting him in the NSC and siphoning the energy out of him is the most humane given the circumstances. It sounds awful...I absolutely agree. But given the circumstances, what choice did the FBC have?

    • @scoroscopebjd6149

The Oldest House isn't quite located in NYC, one of its' limbs is. The game shows it's connected to multiple different realities, and if we pay attention to a bunch of details, it's very likely that it's a modern incarnation of Ygdrassil.

I really loved your explanation and all the in-game documents you pulled to prove it. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what Remedy had in mind. When you put it all together, it makes so much sense. The containment would have been near-impossible without Northmoor's direct cooperation, and it's implied that he could break out if he wanted to.
To my understanding, the water coolant keeps him comfortable, and he is sleeping soundly, perfectly content in having become the embodiment of power he so desired, though occasional annoyed mutterings can be heard from the Furnace when the temperature gets too high.

He was cooperative AT FIRST. The NSC in the game is the 2nd one they built because he escaped the first one (you can find the remains of it in the Formation. @@dave_the_slick8584 I went back to the game and looked at all the notes I collected to figure out where, exactly, I picked up that it was a purposeful escape attempt.
In a note called NSC it mentions the NSC-01 was made to humanely contain him in comfort but he somehow used his powers to move the entire sarcophagus to the Foundation and it was only after they recaptured him that he was put in restraints inside the 2nd NSC and they added spatial anchors to prevent it from being moved again.
So he wasn't strapped down the first time but he was still locked up with no human contact before he tried to escape. They apparently decided to abandon the humane and comfort parts in retaliation. Similar to what they did with refusing Dylan any entertainment when he "acted up" on top of the isolation and no privacy he already had.

2:22 I'd imagine the main reason in-universe for the discrepancy here is because the existence of the Foundation of the Oldest House is supposed to be completely secret to all outside of the Director. Thus, any information about it needed to be expunged, and any Items that might have had a connection to the Foundation needed to have their origins "retconned" internally by the Bureau.

    • @sorayaimperial
      @sorayaimperial 7 дней назад +1

A bit late, but you can use the term "blackout" to mean that you have no communications with someone. Not a literal electric blackout. As the external lockdown is enacted (and you have several Altered Items that can travel on waves, sound and cables), it is fair to assume that the blackout Estevez is alluding to is the entire events of Control, as we know that except for Ahti getting out and Jesse getting in, the Oldest House becomes fully isolated during a Lockdown.
We know that there is clearly a temporal asynchrony between the events of Alan Wake 2 and Control (AWE DLC matches Initiation 5), and the alarm for 3 years in the future that you get at the end of the DLC. Now, how can an alarm sound 3 years before the fact? This alarm is the same that we see Saga witnessing (the monitoring station saying "AWE in Progress" and sirens blaring), so clearly Control is happening at the same time that Alan Wake 2 (at least partially with the Dark Place, and at least partially with Bright Falls itself); therefore, the blackout in the bureau is simply the Lockdown to contain the Hiss. Like a temporal Threshold/Overlap. We also have no idea how long Control actually takes in real life and, after the end game, several characters allude to the fact that the Hiss are still everywhere and it will take a long time to clear every last one of them, in order to lift the External Lockdown. There will be no communications from field agents to HQ while this lockdown isn't lifted, I think it's Arish who states that it will take a long time to get everything up and running like before.
Or maybe my theory is wrong and there is something really bad going on for Control 2.

really with the implication by ahti has well that the power plant failing to keep northmoor cool will cause it to blow up and kill the entire bureau kind of shows why the whole keeping him cool is a good thing for pretty much everyone nearby
also that and the whole him gaining a new movement ablity involving space manipulation implys that he is still growing in power(add in the fact he started talking like the board in his letter to others at times and the whole power surge the board gave jesse and how the hiss seem to empower things as well)

Three massive things not covered in this video:
    1. There really wasn't any other way for the FBC to contain Northmoor in a safe manner. He would be a danger to anyone and anything around him, due to the heat he's able to create most likely being nuclear, as stated. So in a sense, it is the most humane way of containment. Radiation is a bitch.
    2. The original NSC vanished, with Northmoor as well. They were eventually found (iirc you can find remnants of the original one in the quarry area), but the second NSC was built to be much more secure, which would explain why Northmoor is bound.
    3. Northmoor actually *consented* to the containment, even if it was through pressure from Trench. This means that even though it is inhumane to us, Northmoor didn't mind it at least on some level.

I agree that what seems to have been done to Northmoor is horrific, but I really can't see an alternative to it, is the thing. If Northmoor gorged himself on paranatural power to the point he lost control of it, and in the state of mind he'd allowed himself to get into, it'd be the Bureau's duty to contain him and find ways of leaching that energy off in a controlled fashion. Depending on a lot of unknown factors, the Oldest House must have been running on something before Northmoor was contained, so it I don't think he blew up and the place went "hey, free electricity!" Also, considering how miserly the Board is being with it's "gifts" to Jesse, makes me think they don't want this kind of thing happening again.

Ah, but you're missing one detail: Northmoor's alive, yes. And if he is immortal, then there's always the possibility he could get himself under control. He was a bigtime parayootie, so if he could pull himself together, focus that rattled brain of his, he could conceivably cool off, and become the superbeing he always wanted. It's a double-edged sword, absolutely - because he won't be happy about being a battery for the past 50 years, and he'd probably make the Oldest House the Newest Crater if he got out - but there's always hope for him. At least, from his perspective, if he's still cogent enough to have a perspective at all.

Ahti saying that Northmoor is "starting to climb the walls" is another one of his word for word translated Finnish expressions. "Climb the walls" means to go stir crazy, become anxious and restless from not having anything to do.
That could be interpreted as meaning just that the current situation with the Hiss invasion in general is causing anxiety to him, perhaps directly having some type of psychic effect on him. Or, it could imply that there is _something_ they normally do to actually make his existence reasonably comfortable but the current situation has forced them to scale that back.

When compared The Bureau and The SCP Foundation, there are a lot of parallels, but ultimately, they do different thing. So far, The Bureau only has to worry about objects, Dylan, and Northmoor. The SCP Foundation has to contain human anomalies, other entities, and objects as well. They don’t have Black Rock to contain things, so they have to experiment (throw D-Class at it) to find a way to contain it. Then they keep experimenting to find out more about it, which definitely helps in containing other objects like it.
They also do have an Ethics Committee, which is sometimes higher than even the O5 Council, and in one Tale, they know all the redacted data. Nearly everything the SCP Foundation does for containment is necessary, such as 110-Montauk, which, depending on which Tale you believe as canon, might not even be that bad. Anyway, it keeps The Scarlet King from coming and killing everyone.
Another is the protocol they use to keep SCP-2845 contained, if that thing breached containment it’d mean the end of the world. Nearly everything they do has a purpose, even though they can be painted as evil.

the crazy thing is in some ways SCP, Warehouse 13 and Control all were inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark. Well specifically the very end scene where the "Top Men" working on the Ark are guys boxing it up and sticking it in a super secret government warehouse. I heard the plot of control 2 will be that"something" will get out of the oldest house and cause problems in NYC that we have to stop.
Watching this video I have a strong sense that in this case it's likely to be Northmore, especially with the parallels of the Chernobyl sarcophagus (how it was about to fail and a new one needed to be constructed, although the names don't match up, since the new one is called nsc), and the comments from Ahti.
Anyway, great video, I enjoyed it a lot.
