    Control has been slightly overlooked this year. In this video I take a look at one of my favourite bits of side content in the game, Threshold Kids! The Federal Bureau of Control's attempt at a paranatural edutainment TV show for the kiddos!

    Threshold Kids was my favorite collectible in Control. They're a great way to deliver exposition while simultaneously being hilarious and the creepiest thing in the game. And despite the document explaining that they're just a weird product of Bureau staff, I can't help but feel like there's something supernatural going on behind it.
    The fact that episodes are just playing randomly around the building (and even in the astral plane) for Jesse, and the way that they just get more and more over-the-top in how twisted they are in presenting what the Control Bureau does. It's almost like the series took on a mind of its own at some point. That's the only explanation I can think up for why anyone would think Uncle Mr. Bones screaming threats at imprisoned children would be suitable education for kids.

    • @thanatos7246
      @thanatos7246 3 года назад +5

      Didn't they produce it for Dilan?

    • @YorkJonhson
      @YorkJonhson 3 года назад +14

      @@thanatos7246 Yeah, that's what the background document about it seemed to imply. But I like to theorize that something else is going on with it behind the scenes, at least with later episodes that get creepier and creepier. I know the people working at the bureau are odd-balls, but it still seems super weird that any of them could possibly think that the Threshold Kids were a suitable educational tool to win over a kid that has the potential to be the next director.

    I think it’s interesting to note that Mr Bones may be a reference to the DC Comics character Mister Bones. The skeletal head director of the DEO, the Department of Extra-normal Operations, in the pages of “CHASE.”
    A short lived title in the late 90s about Cameron Chase, who has similar abilities to Jesse Faden. Cameron is an agent who investigates incidents involving super-powered beings and, if possible, contain and experiment on them within the DEO. And at worst, negate that being.

      In a world where super heros fly around night and day, where the most normal super hero, is a guy that dresses like a bat and make even gods tremble in fear, what is the point in hide the supernatural from the common public? The most dark evils in this world is just another supervillain to be defeated by the heros.
      The most terrifying thing in such world would definitely be the constant world ending conflicts happening all the time.
      God forbid living in a city like Metropolis where buildings are regularly turn in to dust.

    I have a theory that the tapes were actually way more tame. Since they were probably filmed in the Oldest House I want to say that the films were changed or tainted. Making the tapes themselves an altered items. I only say this because no one would intentionally film this for kids. My other theory is the people that were in charge were "influenced" by something to do it this way, not really mind controlled by nudged into a specific direction.

    For my taste Threshold Kids was the best thing of this game! At first I nearly freaked outabout it (the tapes are located at places, where you surely have enough other things to think about), but niw I'm addicted to it. Creepy, funny, unnerving, but still very insightful HOW the FBC thinks and works. And let's not forget - we don't know how much influence the Board had at this ... I like the theory, that the tapes 'changed' over the time because of the influence of the Oldest House and the Board. I think this makes much sense - the show started with normal puppets and content, but over the time contents started to 'transform' like oh so many things at the FBC / Oldest House.

Those programs also helped to obscure the truth of actual incidents by mixing them in with conspiracy theories, stories and less credible accounts.

      The Night Springs proposal note even says "We can also use a solid media outlet to test paranatural concepts on civilian audiences, seeing how they react to certain facts (presented as fiction) in the event that the Bureau ever decides to make certain realities public knowledge.” meaning that the two shows were used to gauge the general population understanding of the paranatural and unknowing expose them to said concepts. Making them less resistance to them if the FBC ever need to reveal certain details to them, which would totally support what you’re saying if I’m not mistaken.

      @@MidnightMorgan_ I just realised something... Let's for a moment think anout them not as lessons, but think about what each episode implies.
      Astral Plain is about the titular Astral Plain and possibly Meg's connection to the Board since she draws the inverted black pyramid not the plain itself, also note that Topher has no idea what she's talking about meaning this is something the Bureau didn't tell them.
      Altered Items is about Topher and Meg encountering an Object of Power and the rules the Bureau taught them about interacting with them. Also note how when it becomes unstable the room flashes red, possibly implying the Hiss has it.
      Missing Momma is about Meg telling Topher about her Mom dying and the Bureau redacting how she died, it is implied that Topher's Mom walk compelled to go to the city in the Black Rock dimension and never came back.
      Keeping Secrets is about telling the children what is confidential, Meg cannot leave the Bureau, either due to her telling someone confidential things outside or due to her being under surveillance as her mom died.
      You And You Special Powers is about Meg failing her clairvoyance test (clairvoyant is someone who has extrasensoey abilities, in Control parautilitarians) and Mr Bones "comforting" her, Mr Bones tells her that when they find out what she can do, she may be able to become the Director (Big Chair). Also note how she doesn't want to be the Director.
      Meg has green eyes and red/ginger hair, on her sweater there's a HRA (protection from the Hiss created by the Hedron/Polaris resonance), She doesn't want to be Director despite Mr Bones (possibly the Board??, grasping at straws with that one) saying she can be.
      In my opinion Meg is Jesse in these video lessons and Topher is Dylan...
      The reason why I think Topher is Dylan is that Topher is the one who is corrected or told off through the lessons, the most effective way to teach children something is wrong is by making them feel consequences. Being spanked, grounded, dad going "on holiday", being shifted to a different reality by an unstable OOP, stuff like that.

      Hey sorry I have been away for a bit.
      I just had a re-read of my Art and Making of Control book. The book was not available when I made this video, but it has a great section on the production of the Threshold Kids and it does give some clarity on a couple things.
      1. The square on Meg’s sweater isn’t a HRA but rather a geometric pattern. it was however inspired by other characters’ costume designs. Interestingly, though more subjective in nature, her long sleeves are reminiscent of a straight jacket. Helping to subtly reinforce the idea that Meg a prisoner within The Bureau.
      2. Meg, Topher and Mr Bones were made as mirrors for Jesse, Dylan, and Trench/The Board respectively so there is going to be parallels to them.

    So was threshold kids created for Bureau personnel or their kids ...?

      It 's unclear.
      Whilst it wasn't made for Bureau personnel it could have still been used to familiarise their children with the nature of their parents work. That being said, there's very little mention of children in FBC documents so I’m doubtful this was the case. We do know that there was at least one child, Dylan Faden, being held within the Bureau as part of the Prime Candidate Program. Since he is P6 and Jesse Faden is P7 (Though she lived outside the FBC’s authority) one could presume that their may have been other children prior to them. Though this is just speculation as you don't have to be a child to be a Prime Candidate. For example, Alan Wake, was being researched as a possible candidate and obviously he’s an adult. Since key information on the Threshold Kids proposal is redacted what I said in the video is just my theory based on context and evidence.
      Sorry I can’t answer you question definitively but I hope this helps!

      @@MidnightMorgan_what part of the game says Alan considered a candidate. I'm waiting until after I get the platinum trophy to start the dlc's so if it's there I wouldn't know.

    I think your use of youngster in the first sentence of the solution part of the document could also be children

      Oh it’s totally possible. From what I remember when I made this mock-up "children" didn't quite fit the redacted area. I think there was a lot of wasted space which suggested to me at the time that it wasn't the word being used. It could even be another word all together but “children” or “youngster” makes the most contextual sense.

    in regards to the unredacted Threshold Kids memo, I think instead of using his name they were already probably calling him P-6. just my far less researched thought
