    The find of my life was a few months ago at an estate sale where I found a McIntosh MX110Z pre-amp with a $5 sticker on it. I grabbed it and headed straight to the guy collecting money, he asked if I wanted the other thing that went with it. He walked me back there and behind some junk there was an MC240 power amp. $5 for the pair!

    back in the 70's in the Netherlands Marantz was the stereo set to get. Especially with an all Gold front and lots of needles. (and later LED's) After Marantz came Bang and Olufsen, that seems to be more focused in design, have the sliding doors and compact hanging on the wall. Good Video Thanks!

    Also guys don't forget about harman kardon. Nowadays you hear more about infinity and jbl but back in the day the h&ks were up there with some of the others pete listed.
    I would stay away from any of the later marantz products too but if you find anything recent from them - do not leave it on the shelf! Denon acquired Marantz a while back (from i think Philips?) and have since put out some realllly nice stuff.
    I have also seen hitachi and toshiba receivers come into my shop that are as big and shiny as an sx-1280 and while they aren't nearly as popular there are collectors out there that will pay big money for them. And on the other side of the coin youve got Sony who didnt really compete in the 70s watts-per-channel wars. instead they focused more on quality of sound and balance (according to Sony collectors, of course)
    Stereophiles are a funny bunch and it seems like whatever they had back in their day is what they want now...even if that was a Montgomery ward or jc penny..
    Oh yeah, Luxman is another nice one...

    Hi Pete, I stumbled across you about 2 weeks ago when I was looking at some restoring furniture videos on RUclips. Started watching your other videos, have probably watched 40 so far. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! The information is so very good, thank you. I have been a re-seller part-time for about 5 years or so (still work full time). I have gotten some knowledge about buying and re-selling books, this being 50% of what I buy and re-sell. I use my smart phone to look up values when I am out hunting, mostly buying collectibles. I have never touched electronics before, but after watching you, you have given me the confidence to add this to the things I am looking for! Found a Yamaha receiver system on OfferUp (something you recommended that I didn't know even existed) and should be able to flip it for a $150-$200 profit. Woo Hoo! When I get home from work I tell my wife I am going to "watch Pete some more." Of course, I say this in my best "Pete the Russian accent" (I thought you were Russian, although in one of your videos you said you were Polish). Anyway, thanks again for talking the time to help. I live in southwest Michigan, (Kalamazoo) If I every get over your way, I will stop by and say hi Jeff

    Good selections you started with Sansui and ended with McIntosh nice! Never could afford a McIntosh! But being a Marine over seas on the Rock and Yokohama I could afford Sansui, Pioneer but at an E-1 base pay in those days "73" $301.00 a month! But free chow and a cot! And all the ammo you could fire! I choosed Toshiba SB-404s, SA-400, PT-884 reel to reel and SS-37 rear, SS-47 front speakers I thought Quad was the future?? CMTFU and a Akai 1710W reel to reel all purchased for $550,00 on my first tax return of $245.00 and loaned out $20 for $40 etc! I was pretty tight with the Gunny! Sent it all home to Chicago before rotation 10/14/74 and still have it all except of the SB-404S which I sold like an idiot! And I'm looking every place so I can to buy another one! Toshiba Stereo wasn't even in the top 3 in Japan back then! But it still functions and still have a Panasonic SA-8000x "76" it'll turn on! But I've bought another one in pristine condition! And a Sansui AU-7700, the sound quality along with a pair of Goodwill LM-330'S is fantastic! Maybe I've setting up my 5.1's & 7.1's home theater systems wrong? But the older receiver's & amplifiers with older speakers & 15" woofers just sound richer & deeper to me? I'm not sure if it because I bought the equipment and I'm bias? Or I can afford better weed now? But I've started purchasing albums again to play on the old school turntables, listening to great music & bands of the 60's & 70's and realize how lucky I was to be born in the 50's and listened to the evolution of music from blues to rock then rock & roll back to blues and onto rap & hip hop! And it just sounds better on my older stereo equipment! TMI!! Thanks for the information be cool! Sinn Fein Byrne

    Profitable buying and selling of used, audio gear is more complex than having a list of brand names at hand. Brands change over the years, having varying quality and value. Many brands have made both valuable, high-end products and cheap, low-end pieces (think Marantz and Pioneer for just two of many examples). Even during good eras, there can be significant differences in models and even some great brands have made some lemons. Technical issues can be easy and inexpensive to remedy or quite pricey to fix. Cosmetic issues can be deceptively minor or major. One must know about such things in advance and diligently research anything about which they do not already know when considering a purchase or pricing something to sell.

  • @JoeJ-8282

    Yeah, if you're exclusively looking for reselling and getting maximum profits from that on eBay, etc., then I pretty much agree with most of those choices there, simply because of collectability and/or rarity with some, however, if you are simply considering buying some good used and vintage equipment for your own personal use, and you mainly just want to find some of the best quality stuff that was ever made, then in addition to those brands mentioned in this video, I would also seriously consider the following brands too: Adcom, Akai, Altec-Lansing, Bryston, B&W, Carver, Denon, older Fisher Studio Standard, Harmon/Kardon, Infinity, older JVC stuff, (from Japan Victor Corporation), Krell, Mitsubishi, (try to find a Mitsubishi DA-A15DC Power Amp in good condition, because they were awesome!), NAD, Onkyo, (especially any Onkyo Integra series stuff, and especially their power amps from the 80's with those huge analog V/U meters on the front!), Pioneer Elite, Polk Audio from the 80's, Rotel, Sony ES series, TEAC, Threshold, and of course older Yamaha stuff, just to name a very select few of the major good brands... Of course there are also many other good brands out there too, but those are the more commonly found brands which were also good quality, and which came to mind first when making this short quick list, but all of those, along with the better brands that the guy in this video mentions, are a great place to start when shopping for good quality used gear that's worth picking up, either for selling or keeping in your own personal stereo system... The most important thing to remember when shopping/buying/trading/selling used and vintage audio/video gear and speakers is to have FUN while doing it, and always enjoy some great sounding music on some of the equipment you find every once in a while too! :)

    • @JoeJ-8282
      @JoeJ-8282 2 года назад

      @@lawlesslove Well, first off, (and I'm not trying to be ugly or anything), but if I'm gonna truly be able to help you with technical stuff, then you're gonna have to proofread your questions for spelling errors before posting them, (or just pay closer attention as you're typing stuff out and fix any "typo" errors as you go), (that's how I do it), because otherwise I may not fully understand what you are talking about. Technical and electronic stuff really needs to be a very precise subject, or else otherwise it gets confusing to talk about and explain clearly, and the actual electronic components themselves even oftentimes don't work as well as they could or should if precision and accuracy (of adjustments, settings, and hookup especially), are not at the precision level they should be...
      Anyway, what I am mainly referring to there above is what you wrote in the middle of your first question... What did you mean when you wrote "...wire abs..."?
      Also, what were you talking about when you mentioned "those plug things"? Were you referring to the individual equipment power cord plugs, or were you talking about all of the audio and video hookup cables? (RCA, HDMI, etc.)
      And also in regards to your first question, towards the end of it; NO, you don't necessarily NEED to have an equalizer installed in the system to get good sound out of it. The equalizer is a totally "optional" piece of equipment, one that's only there if you prefer to change the sound output of your system in some preferred way... However, an equalizer can also be more of a "detriment" to the sound if it is used/adjusted incorrectly. If you have no idea how to hook the equalizer up AND adjust it correctly to get the specific sound that you prefer, then I may be able to help walk you through setting it up, but that is of course MUCH easier to do by actually *showing* you in person, than trying to explain it only in written words! So, since me actually showing you in person how to hook the equalizer up and utilize it to get the most usefulness out of it is not possible, (unless you happen to also live in the Albuquerque, NM area), you might also just opt to leave the equalizer out of the system entirely, because an equalizer is NOT an absolutely essential piece of equipment in order to get sound out of the system. The rest of the system will work just fine without it, but having an equalizer hooked in just gives you the option to fine tune and adjust the sound (timbre, etc.) to your personal tastes.
      The best way to utilize an equalizer, (if you do), is to make very slight, subtle adjustments first, making mental note of the resulting sound changes as you are adjusting each one of the individual frequency band sliders of it, until you find a setting that you really like the sound of, as equalizer adjustments are a totally "personal taste" thing, and each person's ears and preferences for a certain timbre of sound, ("bright", bass heavy, etc.), are of course different, so if you DO decide to hookup and use the equalizer, then some "experimenting" with the equalizer's settings are definitely necessary until you find an overall sound character that you really like, and that's "music to your ears". I personally like a slightly wavy "w" shape to the sliders, as you're looking at them, because that setting tends to help counteract the (totally unnecessary) boost in the upper bass and lower treble that most modern music is recorded with from the studio/factory, in order to just make it sound LOUDER, and "more impressive"... But if you actually decide to utilize the equalizer in the system then I can further elaborate on the individual settings, and exactly what I mean by having a "slightly wavy W shape to the controls" when you're looking at them.
      Now, in regards to your second question about the car speaker(s); YES, you CAN check to see if a certain speaker is good before actually installing it into a car. One way to test it is to use a multimeter to check the ohms across the input terminals of it to see how many ohms it measures. That measurement will be a set number, and can vary depending on what type of speaker it is. Most "regular" car speakers when they are good, usually measure between 2-4 ohms with a multimeter set to the ohms function, with a few exceptions outside that range slightly, and most car subwoofers when good will measure between 1 and 2 ohms on a meter, again with a few exceptions outside that range... If you have or get a multimeter and set it to measure ohms, and you measure across the speaker's input terminals and then tell me what the meter says, I could tell you if it had a good voice coil at least, as that is specifically what the meter measures. The other checks you can do to see if any speakers are physically good is to make sure that the cone of the speaker is still able to actually move freely, by lightly pushing on the cone to see if it moves inwards slightly, while making sure it doesn't make any kind of "scratching" sound as you move it in and out, but when doing that, just don't push on the cone TOO hard, or else you may damage it!
      You should also check the overall physical condition of the entire speaker, front and back if possible, for any signs of physical damage, such as cracks or holes in the surround or the cone of it. If the speaker passes all of the physical "looking" inspections, and it measures something on an ohmmeter/multimeter set to ohms, then the next thing you can do to check if it's good is to take two pieces of wire and a 1.5 volt AAA, AA, C, OR D size alkaline battery and connect the battery to the input terminals of the speaker; batt "+" terminal to the speaker "+" (or red) terminal, and batt "-" terminal to the speaker "-" (or black) terminal, just for a second or two, and as you do that, the speaker cone should move OUT slightly and you will also hear a slight "pop" sound from the speaker. This testing method doesn't harm the speaker at all, but it is a very clear indicator of whether an unknown speaker driver is indeed good, (or not), before you try to hook it up to an amplifier.
      If the speaker passes all of those tests then you can hook it up to an amp or your car's speaker output terminals (prob. in the doors, or wherever else the speaker is to be mounted), and see how it sounds while playing music through it. Make sure it sounds good to you and it isn't distorted or making any kind of unwanted noises or rattling sounds, which could be an indicator of unseen physical damage to it.
      Hopefully all of this helps some, and of course you still have some questions to answer and reply about what I asked you earlier. (clarification of what you first asked me)

    Marantz was originally in Sun Valley California. In the early 70s they began producing their equipment in Japan. In the early and mid 60s they had three products that are still coveted today. Marantz Model 7 pre-amp, Model 8B power amp, and the legendary Model 10B FM stereo tuner. I own a model 3300 pre-amp, model 250 power amp and a model 120 tuner. I bought these in the early 70s. Be very cautious when buying any electronic equipment that’s that old. Not too many people want to touch it or fix it and the companies that made it, they don’t even want to fix it, so you buy at your own risk.

    Marantz was not a Japanese company, originally. It started out in NY City in1952, design and manufacturing. Manufacturing in Japan, started in 1966. I see this video is over 6 years old, so I would add that today's prices, have at least doubled, and in many cases tripled. Technics is mostly noted for their vintage turntables, which are outstanding, and expensive in 2021.

    Some people may be confusing sound and build quality with "flipping". As far as sound and quality (listening pleasure), many experienced audiophiles prefer tube amps like McIntosh and Fisher. The early Fisher tube receivers put out about 35-45 watts (my Fisher 500C) and with rebuilds and upgrades sound fabulous and highly sought after so its not just about power but also seeming more "musical". I have a Sansui 9090DB, its high powered and sounds great but there's just something about that tube analog sound that is so natural and pleasant sounding. Of course some of the crap called music today has a digital synthetic sound and for good reason--it's processed (like processed meat) so in that case-----whatever.

    Tremendous video, and I couldn't agree more with the brands mentioned. Just have to find them cheap enough. Question though, I've noticed in selling vintage electronics, that they are really big with Europeans, especially in Eastern European. Seems to be alot of collectors there. Any insight as to why, just curious.

    I enjoyed this video very much, thanks! But I will quibble with some of these rankings. Marantz has more value than Sansui, for sure. Consider a 30 wpc Marantz 2230 vs a 39 wpc Sansui 2000X. The 2030 will go for $50-100+ more than the Sansui in equal condition. Check out completed eBay auctions. Also, totally disagree about Tandberg. They go for big bucks! Also, only early HH Scott TUBE amps/receivers are valuable. The later solid state units are a dime a dozen. (They aren't bad, just don't have much value).

    Take this video with a grain of salt as the vintage audio market has changed a bit since 2015. Also some incorrect information so this video could probably just be taken down at this point. I believe Marantz and Kenwood are both American companies that at some point started having there products made in Japan.

    I've got a Sansui R-70 180-watt bought in 1981. It has an electronic volume control. All the Sansui receivers I see on here have knob volume controls. Is mine rare? I've rarely used it over the past 30 years and the components are long gone, but it still fires right up. It sounded great in the day!

    I disagree with your opinion on Scott. Scott products are super high quality and most collectors would kill for an amplifier by them. Some go over 5,000 on eBay... Other than that, nice list. (I own a Scott amplifier and it sounds better than my Marantz and Pioneer)

    • @mrwolfanalogue4655
      @mrwolfanalogue4655 7 лет назад +1

      I agree with you..scott has the highest quality of all, especially the big guns of stereomaster series.

    • @tomtest9564
      @tomtest9564 7 лет назад +1

      Only the early HH Scott TUBE amps are valuable (I own one myself). None of the HH Scott solid state units are worth much. I just bought a working HH Scott 342-B Stereomaster for $40 on eBay! No wood case, which hurt the value, but it does work and sound great.
      FYI, I'm not saying solid state Scotts are bad, I do like my 342-B , I'm just saying they don't have much value.

    • @PrimeHiFi
      @PrimeHiFi 7 лет назад +1

      Tom Test agreed. I was indeed talking about the tube amps that they produced. But yes even the integrated amps they made sound decent, but like you said, don't hold much value just like Kenwoods, Lafayette, Rotel, Nikko, etc

    Hi. What do you think about Onkyo receivers ?

    • @tomtest9564
      @tomtest9564 7 лет назад

      Early Onkyos - the TX-2500 and TX-4500 are EXCELLENT. But they don't have much value. I got my *mint* serviced TX-2500 for $125 on eBay, and overpaid a bit. I could have gotten one for $80 or so if I had been patient.

      Luxman are not well known, but are highly regarded. The earlier the better, since they were bought out by Alpine at some point and the quality declined. But some Luxman amps and receivers will go for $2-600 or more.

Was selling all his stuff away! I now feel like i just robbed her. Looked them up on ebay and they go for $hundreds of dollars and they are working excellent condition. Its like if i just won the lottery on ebay 🤑!!
