Flea Market HiFi - Episode 1 - Vintage Electronics Thrifting Finds
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Thrift stores in my area have been terrible when it comes to finding vintage electronics and stereo equipment for years. Luckily, we do have quite a few vendor malls and flea markets in the area. I tend to come across some pretty nice finds at those. Some want retail or more, so I have to pass on those, but occasionally I'll find a deal too good to pass up. What will we find in this episode? Come along and find out!

eBay has ruined local “Antique Mall” prices.
Yes, it has.
Indoor flea markets tend to have high prices on everything and the vendors are rarely looking to cut a deal. I prefer outdoor flea markets where anything unsold has to be packed up in the car at end of day and taken home again. Those sellers are usually more willing to be flexible on pricing.
Totally agree with you.
Those technics are ones to avoid to as they can have bad failing plastic parts vwest life has pointed that out and i have had some my self that just die beyond repair. The marantz was a cool find though. @@VintageElectronicsChannel
I always wonder how some of those overpriced booths do, stuff sits forever in paid space.
Some of them can't make money. The booth with the electronics has had same of the same pieces sitting there for a year.
I know years ago at a place I used to go , they would give some sellers free or really cheap rent for helping out at the market
Marantz is always a big hit
Interesting finds. I respect your ability to pass on over-priced gear.
It's not easy. Lol
@@VintageElectronicsChannel, I've actually laughed at loud in front of would-be sellers faces at the prices they're asking !
@@VintageElectronicsChannel tell me about it! lmao
5:04: Lol, The first ever VCR I ever owned from the mid 80's ..... They didn't work wirth a damn, so I returned it and got a VHS instead of Beta. Much better, but the machine always kept breaking down. What do you expect for a brand name you've never heard of.....but $300 wasn't cheap for it back then !
Edit: Worth a damn. lol
Cool haul. Most flea markets and Antique Malls are overpriced, until a vendor wants out. Timing is everything as sometimes the prices are dropped drastically. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Timing was perfect on this trip.
one time (1989?) thrifting at a very dingy St. Vincent De Paul, I found a Mcintosh pre-amp for $35, (do not remember the model numbers (working 'unknown' because they did not know how to hook it up). Asked the clerk if they had any more stuff like this. He said they have two more in back, but they were 'just too heavy to move to the floor'. Asked him to show me, it was the matching power amp (MC 152?) and tuner, all in wood cases. Made a deal for $70 for all of it it if I carried it it myself. YES. Got the stuff home, hooked it up and it all worked (pots were a little scratchy). At the time was living in a small San Francisco apartment, could not use this fine stuff.
Sold it a week later ($3500) to a company that refurbished this quality equipment and sent it to Japan. Regret to this day I did not keep it.
A great return on your investment back then, but definitely something that would be great to have today.
Damn, their prices are ridiculous
Pretty slim pickens if you ask me as far as hifi goes.
The foods is there so we can eat shit while listening to shit😮❤
Pretty good haul! Reminds me to visit Cook's Flea Market in Winston -Salem, NC.
3:13 to the upper left you will see a tube tester come into view. Hmmm. You might have overlooked something? And then you might not.
Funny enough, I noticed that after watching, and many others noticed it, too. I actually am planning to go back there and look at it a little closer. It'll be in an upcoming episode.
Describes local picking as poor. Walks around a place with copious amounts of great stuff I've never seen in my local surroundings.
It usually isn't that good. Over the few trips I took there while gathering footage for this video, I saw more than I usually do. There's always that one booth with those racks, but usually that guy has more modern home theater equipment there. I wasn't expecting to find what I did. I usually stop by there once every few months and walk away empty-handed, like I do at our local thrift stores. I don't think I've seen Electronics of any kind at a Goodwill or thrift store around here in a decade.
I've found a lot of stereo equipment at thrift stores flea markets and Hamfest
Found a real nice matched pair of Polk 10s set out for trash pick up a few weeks ago.
Nice!!
Whats the use if the stuff is over priced?
That usually keeps me from buying anything. I typically wait until one of the vendors is moving out and they mark everything down 50% or more to clear out the booth. My view is that flea markets and vendor malls shouldn't be selling at retail pricing. People go there for deals. If there isn't a deal, I usually pass.
I would have picked that Fisher silver face set if the price was fair. It's got the look. And they weren't that bad on build.
I saw that too, and was thinking the exact same thing.
I can't believe you didn't entertain the Tube Tester behind the rotary clock you looked at!
I totally missed it. I was laser-focused on that clock, I didn't even see it. Much to the dismay of my wife, I'm planning to go back down there soon and see if it's still there.
There were two great waves of vintage gear that hit the market. One when everyone just had to have a 5.1 HT system and the other, when the housing crisis pushed gear out of garages and into GW. Those were the days.
That's really more of an antique mall. Anyway, at 4:00, that Sony Sports radio was sitting on a Sears stereo that I got for Christmas in 1984. Digital tuner, turntable, dual cassette, and 8 track.
The Mitsubishi VCR was the absolute best brand for a VCR.
I had always wanted to play around with a Mitsubishi VCR back in the day, but never had one. Now's my chance!
Good instincts at 0:26 I think $45 is way too much for that game caller (and it's missing the speaker). I got one of those last year for $10+shipping...
Had it been in that $10 range, I'd have bought it for nothing more than novelty value. There are GREAT deals at that place if you can find them, but most of the items are priced way too high.
You'll have to put new belts in it. So was it worth it? Probably not.
Hmmmmmmmmm, this was interesting, you seem very much like myself. You kind of sound like Jimmy Stewart. Nothing like this is So Calif. everyone thinks old stereo equipment GOLD, I can sell that on Craigs List for hundreds of dollars, you would not believe the trash on CL in my area wanting $$$$$$$$$.
It's really hard to find anything around here at a decent price. Most thrift stores have nothing, and the few places that have older equipment think it's worth more than gold. Normally it takes months of searching to find one decent deal.
Junk
Yeah, thrift stores have a problem today and it’s not just your location it’s everywhere they all priced her stuff based off of what I think they’re doing is going on eBay and looking at what people are asking. They don’t consider condition they don’t consider anything else and then they ask an arm and a legso they need to take their crap and just throw it in the trash or sell it for us you know for a few dollars or something but be asking $60-$100 or something it ain’t worth 10 bucks forget it I won’t support a thrift store any day of the week
I typically wait for the stuff to sit there for months or until the vendor is moving out of their space. If it's 50, 60, 70% off.... I'll think about it.
Cheap cheap. Cheap cheap.
The tube tester at 3:18 is probably priced at $649
I loved the lot of Dvds and VHS they show , 2:43 . Where is this exactly ?
This is located in Henderson, KY
I have that Sony dual cassette deck. I purchased new in 1997 at Montgomery Wards. Still works, but I can tell the belts need to be replaced. If I rewind a 100min tape it will start to slow down.
It's a pretty simple deck to replace the belts in. I've been messing around with that deck in the couple months since I picked it up, and it seems to be a pretty good deck.
Good lord they can keep all that stuff. What do they think they have?
Most of them think their stuff is made out of gold or something.
Awesome haul my friend .that sony deck and a free VCR ya cant beat that .. keep on having fun. Great video. 🙂
Thanks for watching! It was kinda funny, the young girl checking me out noticed what I was buying and said they "just put some of those, what do you call them.... tape video thingies.... out in the free pile"
@@VintageElectronicsChannel:
"tape video thingies" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Akin to "What's a "land line"?" 😁✌🖖
My flea markets in the Memhis area never have electronics. Plenty of vinyl, but always over priced.
That's a problem here, too. Everywhere has old vinyl, but the prices tend to be astronomical for the condition and selection.
If you are a reseller get single cassette 3-head decks only, The rest are worthless.
While out thrifting I noticed prices are high in my area too. I guess inflation has even affected 2nd hand goods too.
It seems so. It seems like over the past few years, people think that even junk old equipment is a collectors item, and price it as such.
@@VintageElectronicsChannel: "Vintage" used to have an air of collectability to it.
Now it, mostly, means junk. Present company excluded. 😁✌🖖
@@VintageElectronicsChannel I usually have to get 30-60 minutes outside of my city to find decent prices. In town there are too many "collectors" who spend all day buying anything and everything that comes up. Ive gotten lucky on FB a few times, gotta be quick though. Ive seen new listings for Pioneer receivers disappear before ive even finished reading the description! And flea market sellers use eBay listing prices for everything. Happy hunting!
Man, I wish the flea markets around here had half as much hi-fi stuff as those places albeit the prices were pretty terrible tho I certainly would have left alot behind like you did.
Our regular thrift stores around here are terrible. Never anything there. That flea market tends to have a pretty good selection, but the prices are usually pretty high. I got lucky that day finding finding what I did.
There's a good chance that the Technics cassette deck would work. Of all of the late 70's/early 80's decks, those seem to be the ones that still work with their original belts
I was really tempted to pick that one up, but I had to resist. I've always had good luck with Technics over the years.
At those prices most items will never sell , Unbelievable
The fact that most everything is overpriced is what keeps me from buying everything I see. Lol. I usually wait until stuff has been sitting there forever and a vendor is clearing out. When they're losing their booth space and mark everything 50% off or more, that's typically when I'll look harder at something.
that's a great video very interesting in Australia not much like that
Thanks for watching!
If you aren't going to look at the wooden interesting design (tube?) radio...
Maybe mid-modern electronics would be better than vintage!
I used to have the fancier version of that Wollensak cassette deck BITD, very good machine.
so you would have taken everything home
If it wasn't grossly overpriced, absolutely. Lol
Those Panasonic 4 Head Hi-Fi VCRs are nice if the price is right and you still have VHS tapes
The price was right on that one... FREE!
I had the Marantz SD-530 deck. Very good deck. It even has a motor rotating the head assembly, as opposed to those who use cam gear to rotate the heads. I paid for it about 20 dollars and it was in very good working condition, nice front panel, only the top cover was slightly bent.
I've just started digging into that deck, and it appears to be well-built. Not bad for less than $20.
You should have picked up that tube tester man,
Yeah, I totally missed that until everyone started mentioning it. In a future episode, I actually revisit that place and it's still there....
One question... When I'm listening to a song on RUclips, how do I identify if that song is an audio file without loss of quality or if it's an audio file with loss of quality? Where can I see the specifications of the audio being played to know if it is, for example: a “WAVE” or “FLAC” format (without loss of quality) or if it is an “MP3” type file (where there was compression and loss Of Quality)? Is there any extension for the Chrome browser that shows real-time specifications of the audio being played? I visited RUclips's audio file guidelines and it says the following... “[...] Supported file formats: (1) MP3 audio in MP3/WAV container, (2) PCM audio in WAV container, (3 ) AAC audio in MOV container and (4) FLAC audio. Minimum audio bitrate for lossy formats: 64 kbps. Minimum audible duration: 33 seconds, excluding silence and background noise. Maximum duration: none “[...]”. Therefore, RUclips accepts audio files without loss of quality and audio files with loss of quality.
Hmm.... I don't know the answer to that. I'd think whatever format is uploaded would get converted to a streaming format of some sort.
Are you going to post another video after you’ve worked on these? It would be interesting to see if and how you got these things running again!!!
Absolutely! Videos will be coming over the next couple months on these items.
@@VintageElectronicsChannel good to hear
Its frustrating when you come across cool stuff that's overpriced... 6:00 The label is still on it - yeah I know what some of those labels are like, they'll still be firmly stuck when the remnants are dug up in 1000 years!
I understand why some sellers use those impossible-to-remove stickers, but that doesn't mean I like them! Those things can take ages to remove.
What was wrong with that Awesome tube tester @: ruclips.net/video/K5mqN-35-8o/видео.html
I would have snagged that up immediately! I would have kept it. However, as a flip, it would bring in a pretty penny!
They wanted a pretty penny for it! I went back in an upcoming episode and checked out the price tag.... They're a bit high on it.
Wow, prices are ridiculous!
Most of the vendors are out of their minds.
Theres an Emorium type place near me,last year found in there a boxed, mint,Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck,£20,my wallet came out faster than Quick Draw M'Graw.Dragon worked perfectly.
Wow! You had a lucky find!
Did you actually missed that tube tester?Behind the portable cassetteplayers. ;)
I totally missed it. I was so focused on that clock, I didn't even see it.
I don't find JACK at these places...even out if town ! Antique stores don't have anything either, but vinyl.
Edit: In the way of electronics.
I'd get that digital delay.
You missed Fisher amplifier ! How mach ?
Got yerself a new sub. I love videos like these.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! I'll be putting out new Flea Market Hi-Fi videos throughout the year. Stay tuned!
My VHS recorders were top loaders tho. Forgot to add that.
Glossed right over that vacuum tube checker, those things are getting pricey and hard to find!
That one is very pricey as well. It's coming up on an upcoming episode.
Go and buy Mr Chewbacca and put him in your passenger seat so you can use the lane for car pooling.
Great idea!
That’s a killer delay
Wow, so overpriced in that place.
Your charging people to watch ur videos 4k subscribers channel why
I don't charge anyone to watch my regular videos. All my videos the past year or so are 4k. Those who are channel members do get early access to episodes before they go live publicly. I'm normally at least a few weeks ahead producing videos, so there are some upcoming episodes that only members see until they go public.
At 3:15, there is a tube tester that is worth something.
I went back to look at it. It's in an upcoming episode.... there's a reason it's still there!
Those prices are insane, $100 for an old wollensak??!!
That one shocked me. I was excited when I saw the unit and then immediately blown away with what he wanted for it. It wasn't even in the best condition.
how much did they want for the kenwood KC 106 Preamp?
I'm not sure. Next time I go by there, and if it's still there, I'll check.
Really cool video. A number of years ago after some research I really wanted a TOTL mid 90's JVC XL-Z 1050 K2 equipped CD player. A seller on the 'bay's bidding went up to $400.00 dollars. My son tried so hard to get me one, but just couldn't afford it at the time. So right after New Year's I walked into my local pawn shop and li and behold I saw one in great condition with remote for all of $14.97. I spoke with the manager and just to see, asked for a discount. He said how about $2.00 dollars off? I said sure and got it for a song. It sold new for $900.00 dollars and still plays CD 's good to this day.
That's a once-in-a-lifetime deal you got on that one. Well done! Love the fact you asked for a discount. That's great!
Just what all us adults need, more stuff! Nice selection of goods though, I'd like to find a place like that near me. I'm interested in old receivers, or possibly an audio/video receiver that is 5.1 and is not too powerful. Fun fun fun!
My wife doesn't agree with that. Lol. When I tell her I'm going to a flea market or thrift store, I can see the terror in her eyes.... she knows there will be more stuff coming home. It's probably a good thing some of the places around here are overpriced, or I'd come home with a lot more. I always stop at similar places as I travel and I've found some pretty good values all over the country. Sometimes they're harder to find, but keep looking!
Thoight you were in the UK there for a second when I saw the power socket on the wall at the end of the video!
Good luck with your channel.
Thanks for watching!
The SDE1000 is a fantastic delay, regret selling mine.
You missed the tube tester. I would go bacjk for that
I did go back. It'll be in an upcoming episode.
There's an interesting Tube Tester at 3:20, I would get that one.
It's in the next episode!
That digital delay was worth 200😂 rookie
I actually stopped and looked closer at it. I checked ebay and they didn't seem to be worth much more than they were asking for it.
Nothing but “BPC” anymore. Unfortunately, the good stuff is long gone. 😔
I must be unfamiliar with the term. What is "BPC"?
@@VintageElectronicsChannel It’s an acronym for “ Black Plastic Crap” which, primarily refers to the audio equipment primarily manufactured post-vintage era: ie, mid eighties onward.
You'd think I'd have known that! I guess I learn something new every day.
5:55 o clássico Stereo.. Muito bom.
I love poking around flea markets and junk shops here in France, and sometimes find something of interest. My current stereo is a Leak Delta amp that cost me £3 found on a flea market in the UK. It was cheap as the vendor said it was kaput (the speakers were switched off!) Years later I found a pair (two pairs, actually) of Sonab upward firing speakers for a total of 8 euros. Soon after that I obtained a nice Thorens turntable with a Linn Basek tonearm. which was destined for the dump. So, a very good set up that sounds good (to me, anyway) for about €12. Bargain! An interesting channel, Cheers!
I notice you have a UK socket on your bench.
The best finds are at flea markets and junk shops. Sometimes it takes a while to find anything, but part of the fun is in the hunt. Yes, I have a UK socket with 240V for my UK and other European electronics. I lived in the UK as a child and teen.
Years ago ao bought a pair of Rogers LS3/5A's in excellent condition at a Knights of Columbus tag sale for $20 !
Wish these exist in Patagonia Argentina. Great video.
getting these items operational is another headache.
For sure!
interesting video and good machines you bought
Thanks for watching!
I watch and like every your video, for me it's interesting channel I am from Italy
Glad to have you watching from Italy. 🇮🇹
Omg the Chewy costume! I wonder how much. Those can be gold.
I'll have to look next time I go there. It's been there forever.
Where is that I saw British and American standard outlet at the end
That's my studio
@@VintageElectronicsChannel what country
Indiana, USA. I grew up in the UK, so I have 240V UK outlets in the studio for European equipment.
A great trip down memorex lane !
that looks like a big flee market
I go to this flea market a few times a year. The Indiana room always has some neat odds and ends. Are you out of hendo?
It's one of my favorite places. I've found many treasures in the Indiana room. I'm from just across the river. Outside Evansville.
Love the Tape Bot video, by the way. Very cool!
@@VintageElectronicsChannel thanks. I'm in evansville. You're right about there not being a lot of good places to find old electronics here. I go to the thrifts almost every day and it's still rare to find anything good. It used to be pretty decent (late 90s-2008 or so) then I guess everyone discovered ebay.
good ! , where is this place ? , in Ca ?
It's in Henderson, KY
@@VintageElectronicsChannel thanks !
Dduuuuuude I want that Superman 45 box!!

You missed the tube tester
I actually went back and looked at it again. It's in episode 3
Was that Flemarket a ex Kmart building.?
Yes it was! I believe the KMart shut down 20-25 years ago. Before it was a flea market, it was a huge bingo hall.
@@VintageElectronicsChannel: Hick baby's first words.... "Welcome Kmart shoppers." 🤣🤣🤣
You’re a junk collector, you can get it for free, by cruising your area in the evening, when bulk collection is placed curbside, for next day pick up.
Ok buddy, no need to be a poop about it.
That’s called scavenging, illegal in some parts…
Those don’t have these items! What the?? Are you making up old timey advice? How are you going to pick up these things off the street? RUclips ban this babbler
Passed over the tube tester!
I can't believe I missed that!
Is that Sacramento?
This particular flea market is in Henderson, KY.
At 3:19 a Tube Tester !
I can't believe I missed that!
I listened to Steve (as a kid) during the Steve Wright In The Afternoon Days, up till early adulthood - and I think there were some similarities with Kenny Everett. Though - it turns out many, if not all characters were played by Phil Cornwell - I always thought the likes of Mr Angry was actually Steve himself!
A warm, humorous, fun, zany presence who made you feel he was your friend.
I remember he wasn't too keen on two of my favourites though - he had a real dislike for Depeche Mode (and he never really voiced disdain often) though he did praise them circa the Personal Jesus era.
Lots of fond memories listening to Steve and I am very sorry to hear the news.
