I know this is an old clip I believe 13 years, just wanted to say we lost a great one rest in peace Jeff Beck you sure put a lot of music on my soul through a lot of years. May your family find peace in your passing knowing the joy that Jeff brought to this world.
I saw them at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1969. It was one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. Laying on a hill under the stars with my beautiful college sweetheart tripping on a barrel of orange sunshine... WOW what a night!!!!!
I so wish that I had gone to that. I was there the night before with Steve Swallow, Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Still a great show, but I really wanted to see Beck.
The band he had on Rough and Ready was my favorite. He was starting to go in a more jazz direction. Max Middleton is a great counter to Jeff on these albums. This is not a great performance! At this point Rod has totally lost it. Jeff seems uninspired and no wonder with this stiff on stage with him.
Thank you for this.. too bad most of the Rod haters don't realize that Rod (still a superstar) showed up unannounced to support his friend after years... no rehearsal... this is pure jam... and I love it.
I had the Truth and Beck ola album back in the late 60s and wore the things out. It is nice to see them playing together again! They complimented each other so well!
Jeff Beck's voice is his guitar. Rod Stewart's voice fits nicely with Jeff Beck's guitar. They were made for each other. Jeff is humble and down home. Rod Stewart is class.
That's excellent. Shame on you anyone for dissing this version. Band is great, and yes I have the original Truth version on vinyl, and yes I am a musician.
Yes. I saw them play this in 1968 , Chicago. Opening act was Fever Tree (" San Francisco Girls"). Jeff broke the headpiece off his Les Paul that night. An accident .....
She's pretty much matched Beck's talents on electric guitar as well on the past 2 or 3 of Clapton's Crossroads concerts I've seen on PBS. That's saying something, and you can tell she has the master's approval when they play duos together by the smiles flashing between them. It's like they're having the best times of their lives, which they likely are.
The reaction of Jeff as he realizes Rod is on stage with him is absolutely priceless, and at the end he does it again, puts his hands over his face. You can tell he's happy to see him after all these years. And so am I. Good job boys! You are both sorely missed.
@@mikelundquist4596I think everyone knew but Jeff and Jeff often plays people get ready solo so the band would've rehearsed and known that one same with I ain't superstitious he does have guest vocalists sing that one with him so it was easy for Rod to just come in and sing it with them
I saw the JB group back in the late 60's(sorry ,can't remember if it was 67,68,or 69 ;) ), at Eagle's Auditorium in Seattle. He was wearing a white t-shirt,blue jeans, and sneakers with no socks...all about the music. Stewart was jumpin' around and puttin' on quite a show,so much so that some people thought he was beck! A great performance. Also saw JB with the Yardbirds a couple of years earlier: absolutely fantastic.
To whom it may concern: Stop putting shit on Ron Wood ... He is a fine bass guitarist and guitarist. A true rocker with a great personality, he adds joy to anybody’s stage performance and he’s been a Rolling Stone 45 years! He’s also a fine artist. Luv ya Ronnie!!
I saw them in Minneapolis forty years ago at the Labor Temple. Mick Waller played drums, Ron Wood--yeah, that Ron Wood--on bass. Nicky Hopkins on piano. Beck looks the same now; good wig, I guess. Talk about a great album which is still great: Truth, debut by the Jeff Beck group. Timeless.
Give me Howlin Wolf over this any day. Don't get me wrong, I was pleasantly surprised by Rod's show in Philly during the mid-90's. There's no substitution for the real thing. Hoy! Hoy !
There's no reason why I can't like both equally, and I do. I don't need to rank one above the other, and I don't understand the obsession some people have for doing it. They're different takes on the same song, and they're both great.
Me too I was born in 1964. I remember all of this GREAT music due to the fact that my mom was only 17yrs. old and my dad was 19yrs. when I was born so fortunately I was introduced to all of the BEST music ever. I am so grateful that I am part of the generation that genuinely tried to change things without violence. Great years to be proud to be an American.
The beauty about Jeff's sound is that it is still evolving, you know its him and then he comes out with something that is totally unique to the human ear Genius of the guitar 👍🎸🎶🎶
NIce version, but.... & I know the chaps aren't at the same level of Oomph as back in the days of the Truth album, which I still consider a "Class version" of this number. Go check the whole album out & make up your own mind !
Probably the greatest chemistry between a vocalist and a guitarist. They always brought out the best in each other, but something would always happen to screw up the working relationship.
@kharmabum I did not go to either. My most memorable ever though, has to be the first Ann Arbor Blues Fest, the same weekend in '69 as Woodstock. What a show that was! All the great living blues acts were there; actually, the only big name who wasn't there was Hooker (I bought my $6 ticket to see him at Labor Temple, but he didn't make it and they substituted Dr. John). I did see CCR at the Mpls. Armory, and Paul Butterfield at Dayton's 8th Floor. Went to a show at Midway Stadium: Baldry, etc.
Dr Death ... you nailed it. Beck is one of the greatest players who ever plugged in an axe. He's been great his entire career and to be playing a this level late in life is amazing.
Of course, Jeff is in the stratosphere now compared to when they were in The Jeff Beck Group. Rod is still with fine voice also, and can tell that Jeff didn't try to overpower him here.
No question the Strat feels more balanced when you hang it around your neck.. Also the whammy bar assembly on the Strat offers tremendous variability in the sound. . .
I'm kind of disappointed that Jeff didn't hook up a old analog cry baby wah wah pedal for ain't Superstitious... Oh well.. It was great to see Rod on stage with Jeff.. Damn does Rod Stewart ever age...
Rod was a little crunchy around some of the notes but to see them together again was just great. Truth is a weird album. Old Man River? But what is good on it is as good as it gets. And Aint Superstitious was a great cut. Mixing 3/4 with 4/4 in a blues song. The album was like a bolt of lightning when it was released. Mix of hard rock, authentic blues, with inventive and interesting arrangements and Beck playing as well as anybody on the planet. Stewart was unknown at the time but his voice was perfect for that band. Oh Yeah Ron Wood on bass.
+richdys Old Man River is the best song on the album! Stewart excels with this sort of histrionic soul stuff and Beck contributes terrific guitar fills. Keith Moon on tympani btw.
"Ol' Man River" is a great song. It's a pity some people don't recognize the diversity to be found on Truth. Hard rock, proto-metal, R&B, Chicago blues - there's something for everyone.
In other words, kids, you had to be there! I brought this home when I was 11 and had my mind promptly blown. They copied no one. Not like people do today.
The Strat has a more defined tone so the individual notes are more distinct. They are better players than they were back then so they want the music and notes to speak for them not a huge distorted sludge that smacks you in the face.
Love their version! These two still hold up well...Harkens back to when I thought Rod was cool. Their version was the best, better than the original, IMO, though it pains me to say it... Two Brits outdoing the best of American music? It's a tribute to Howlin' Wolf and Willie Dixon...The Beck recorded version has that drum beat...Really primal and spooky.
I saw the last show of their fated reunion tour around 86 (guitar shop) tour stopped short of course Rod appears to be an inconvenience Jeff being typical I'm sure too fucking bad fans of the heyday
Loved the early days of both these guys. Those first albums were so bluesy and awesome. Saw them live at the Laurel Racetrack in 1969 in Maryland. Good times.
@kharmabum Really?? You were there? There were some great acts that came to that venue! Savoy Brown played there, great show. The one thing I clearly remember from the Beck show is that Stewart got quite frustrated with the faulty PA, and at one point threw the whole mic and stand across the stage. Don't think they ever got it right. You didn't happen to catch Zep at the Guthrie did you? That was another historic Mpls show......imagine it....Zep in all their glory, playing before 1440 people.

They obviously rehearsed it. As singers age, their vocal ranges change. There is NO shame in this, it’s just a fact of musical life. Changes in range mean you may very well need to ask the band you’re playing with to accompany you in a friendlier key :) Listen to the original “Truth” version and then to this-they are in different keys, and at the JB/Rod show at Hollywood Bowl 10 yrs later, yet a different one still. The band probably ran this thing down w/Rod at soundcheck & figured out his 2009 “Superstitious” key then. This is what pros do. I also think that this in NO way diminishes the magic of the moment. Three legends and a next legend in the same stage : Stewart, Beck, Colaiuta and Wilkenfeld. ¡Wow!
RIP Jeff Beck.
Man...can anybody else come back after 40 freakin' years and even come close to sounding as good as these two!!??
Clapton and Stevie Winwood
Did Beck and Winwood ever get together? My two all time favorites. I sure would have liked to hear those two together!
One of the greatest. Sadly lost too early.

Jane Millerick Maybe but the Howling Wolf version doesn't have all the tricky stuff.

Rod and Jeff.. where it all began!
Don't fail to mention that that's the awesome Tal Wilkenfeld playing bass!
As she was laughing when Rod says 41 years ago, many years before she was born.....LOL
