- Honda, BMW, and Harley face off in a police motorcycle competition, on the driving range at the Timpanogos Harley Dealership in Lindon Utah. It was a ton of fun watching these guys show off their skills in a friendly competition.

The beemers are nice but I got to say, I LOVE the Harleys
Forget riding the course, I'd get lost in that maze of cones!
Looks good. Enjoyed watching that.
Yeah filming these guys made me want to try the course so bad. I'm sure I would have taken out a world record amount of cones. But it would have been a blast!
We're seeing a mix of classes in this collage of videos. So much also depends on rider skill and experience in competitions. GREAT video footage and EDITING here! Kudos!
this is a very cool video.. hopefully that police officers in my country capable to do such things...
Love this
As a Medical Despatch Rider here in the UK, I've been using the older BMW K1100LT (still used by the police here).
And as wide as it is, I have to say I love it, it's great for filtering through traffic, the amount of times I've been held up by a moped filtering in front - it's annoying! I'll have to get a camera because most of my mates don't believe me, lol.
I was thinking of selling that bike, but I might keep it now I've seen this vid, lol, I'll go practise some manoeuvres now ;)
Harley's look and sound great. But as far as safety, speed, functionality, and reliability goes; it's the BMW R1200RT no contest.
Good ol' Harley FTW!
This is where Brian was at on Saturday and he did really good. I was impressed. There were several other events as well, he had a good time.
Gotta admit the Harleys sure look and sound a lot cooler that the scooters do. I think IF I were to be pulled over I would rather be pulled over by a motorcycle than a scooter.
I was almost too mesmerized to hit "like"
And there is another thing. Public services like the PoliceCorps make there purchases/investments based not only on operational facts, but they will take the operational facts as only one issue in the decision what to purchase. The other decision points (and often more important as generaly assumed) are: capital costs, interest, offered maintenance etc. Also the public services are mainly managed by book keepers and financial manager, not by operational managers close to the "field troops".
I love the Honda St1300 best... probably that's why I bought one myself
They should make the BMW F800GS a police bike. It has the capabilities to go off road and it is fast enough and comfortable enough to go 80+ mph all day on the highway.
I currently ride a 05 BMW for my department and it looks like we are going to be going to Road Kings this fall. We shall see
Damn these guys have some serious skill to be doing those tight maneuvers on those big heavy bikes.. I couldn't do this shit on a 125...
Nice vid!
Imagine yourself in the seat of a motorbike for at least the next 8-10 hrs, every day. With this exercises as shown in this competition not coming up as 'usual jobs'. What do you choose? The comfortable Harley Davidson, the nervous BMW or the Honda? I have been riding indeed those three types of bikes and I can assure you, on the daily duty the Harley exceeds all the rest in comfort, riding capacities, torque and maintenance.
Harleys are fun bikes. The main reason some forces adopted Harleys in the 50' and 60's was to reflect with the mainstream culture of the time. All three bikes are top bikes. But considering: Speed, Maintenance, Spare parts, Manouverability, value after a couple of thousand miles, Ease of repair, its the Honda
The Sheriff there! He is the Man!
which Bike handles best? it's not the Bike / it's the training the Riders had. great vid - Thanks for posting.
@mitsubishimirage This one was. It was a fund raiser for injured police officers.
That's how you ride! I took a course with a guy who does the same thing he was helpful in learning how to ride
@trimzulu I actually asked if the Honda had a turbo charger, but it doesn't the exhaust just makes a sound like it does.
in my eyes the honda faces the best uses for the police driver, looks new and helps to turn the bike sure and effectively. the harleys makes the better sounds, of course.
B-M-W R1200RT best in all categories!!
The BMW's and Harley's are in different classes. They don't compete against each other. Even the Road Kings, and Electro Glides were in separate classes.
@steveincairo I imagine they are out there, I have seen G650GS police bikes used to patrol the foothills around Utah.
HD's are for sure the most suitable police motorcycles for the american roads...but i think the most flexible and right motorcycle is the bmw...
The BMW's are definitely the best ones in that competition. In Mesa, Arizona I have seen cops driving Kawasaki 1400's
great control good job
The BMW in my view.
Notice how they look in the direction they want their bikes to go. Alot of cyclists can learn from this!
are these competitions open to the public to watch?
I've been visiting empty parking lots since this event practicing slow turns and figure 8's.
@MadStu When I was filming this I wanted to be riding that course so bad. I'm sure I would have taken out a world record number of cones, but it does look like a lot of fun.
Honda makes the better motorcycle for the intended purpose between Honda and HD. Cheaper to purchase, cheaper to maintain and quicker than HD.
@matrox And IF you were trying to get away from the motorcycle/scooter pulling you over, you would also prefer the Harley.
what police motorcycle is the best? of course the harley davidson
@cantonmotors Seems a little crazy switch to Harley's from BMW's. Most people do that the other way round.
ST1300 FTW.
@keltic185 believe it or not, the floor board scrape is something they actually want to hear.
very cool
@kosmosleha Exactly.
@ardvarkkkkk1 I filmed this event, there were different categories for the different bikes. The Harley's don't stand a chance against the other bikes, they don't compete against each other because there wouldn't be no competition.
I still prefer the Harley PD bikes, but there is no doubt the ability of the BMW. I still go out into parking lots and do "drills" ... dont get my wrong i love the open road, but object avoidance and slow speed handling go a long way.... even if I get really funny looks from other bikers (feel sorry for them when they need the skill)
I see a guy on HD without gloves, just bare hands! I know all of them are highly skilled professional riders, but it seems a bit odd. In Japan, I wasn't even allowed to attend rider's training if I wasn't wearing long sleeves, long pants and of course pair of gloves, and a helmet
Good Skills :)
@kosmosleha What money?
What makes the best police bike? Being a Harley rider I want to say Harley. But being a cop I can't honestly say it. I'd have to say BMW. BMW our performed Honda and Harley in tests in speed and breaking distance. And being air cooled, the Harley Davidson bikes would over heat in congested city traffic.
Kawasaki has a police model of the C14, i would take that over all the others :)
It comes down to what brand of motor u started riding at your department. I like Harley's because the glide and road king motors are more comfortable and are American Made. I road Glides and Road Kings for 14 years as a motor cop and would not own any other brand. I was in 5 motor competitions and it takes a lot more skill to operate an 800 pound motorcycle as compared to a 400 pound motor. Most motor cops love the motors they ride and it does not matter the brand. Best job in Police work.
ST1300 is 640lbs
The Kawasaki KZ1000P was the ultimate police bike. Now, it's a toss up, as Kawasaki's new Concours has all sorts of electrical and supply issues from the upfitters, the Hondas have had wobble issues, and start making officers have knee problems from the body positioning, the BMW's are fast smooth bikes, but their high center of gravity and single plate dry clutch kill them in city driving, parades, and cone courses. The Harley Davidson's are the icons, but are slow and bulky. Victory = ugly!
the powers that be are mad about the maintenance cost that we have accrued after the warranty ran out so they will not even consider BMW again. Myself and my motor partner have looked at the Kawi 1400 and have found that they have an initial cost that is more than the Harley so I think that is what their choice will be
@halfthrottle Win!
So cops driving around in just t-shirts can legally book people that drive dangerously?
Harley's are cool bikes but a bit clumsy, I had a Harley but it wasn't the best for my commute, belt drive that didn't last long, no shielding from the hot engine, noisy, too much vibration, it was comfortable, but wasn't an everyday bike. I ended up selling it for a BMW R1150RTP it's expensive to maintain but I'll sacrifice in cost of ownership for the use ability perks.
isnt it that the Harley has the most power. The Honda is the most affordable to purchase and maintain but the BMW is the most comfortable and has the most options ? If im wrong someone tell me please!
@JimarasVidi Why for sure? What do they do that the others don't (except fulfill some kind of patriottic desire to ride a real US bike)? I don't think there are any police departments outside of the US using Harleys these days, they are all using BMW's, Yama FJ's, Honda Pan's, Kawa GTR's etc. Not classically styled cruisers that have low ground clearance because that is how it was done 50 yrs ago.
i think there is no doubt that the HD is the best looking and sounding bike.. but its manouvrebility is HD style to big and moves like a slug :p but hey, ther arent any turns in the USA so that isnt a problem :D
guzzi v7 is the best bike the have ever had (H)
BMW R1200RT
What are you, 12?
@halfthrottle HDs are cult!
check those bikes for gyros... wow i wont ever run from a motorcycle cop on my harley i think id be caught...
@cantonmotors That is an excellent point. I own a BMW GS and want to vomit anytime I think about going to the dealership to have work done. BMW's are stupid expensive to maintain.
@wantitnow1 The Harley's are so much slower than the BMW's and Honda's they had to make a separate class in the competition for them. So you, and all the criminals who hope to get away want the police to ride H-D.
if an officer pulls me over on a honda im doing to just lol and drive off
@twobanger Yup buy an American bike..................that has Japanese suspension, brakes, electrical hardware, and fueling systems.
Thats why they catch everybody, their bad ass riders, JUST PULL OVER WHEN YOU SEE THE LIGHTS- BITCHES, you know your caught, HAHAHAHAHA
Kevin M needs hug. He has been abused by unknown officer. Lol
HARLEY WINS
those BMWs sound like vacuum cleaners
HA. Harley skeezats love to be heard and noticed!
@kosmosleha Do you want your money back?
This is too bad they have to ride those. And the handlebars are ridiculous.
Harley Davidson motorcycles are the best
@halfthrottle If you're going to make up it as you go, at least make it believable.
whe he wanted a thumbs up idk. but i can deal with the adds, like yourself. it keeps youtube free. maybe he wants to pay for it. i dont. ( if i dont have to that is)
I just don't like the Honda...sounds like a vacuum.
dont get me wrong i love harleys to death but they are over priced pieces of nestalgia. they look and sound cool but that is all you are really getting with a high price tag. oo and an expensive tool kit :P. it took harly forever before they started using belts instead of chains and they still dont ahve a production shaft drive yet.... a bit pathetic really. typical american market, "you dont know what you want, ill tell you what you want!"
@wantitnow1 I mostly FEEL SORRY for cops that rides a HARLEY. Vote goes to Honda and BMW.
Harleys are Chinese junk
