That power knob is pretty sweet. Would be nice to have one of those on the back panel of most Marshalls! Bypassable obviously, just in case you're not into that kinda thing~
Three features all Marshall should have : 20w, selfbias and PPIMV. This would make the life so much easier. BUT -> Selfbias costs money, a good PPIMV costs money too (99$ when made by a tech, without the work... if Marshall does this, we could count a +140$/200$ for each amp. So they will have a more expensive amp in doing all that ; and their customers are very picky when it comes to price.
If runned in A-Class, this is possible. Marshall built an amplifier like that recently. Although I don't know the quality of the amp. Groove Tubes made a Soul O version with two EL34, delivering 20w. MJW had the Goldstar, reaching 10w with a single EL34. Optional, you could have had a live version, that had two EL34 for delivering 20w.
ive heard of that. never done it myself because my amp was always stationary, lucky too, but i had a pretty good lesson on changing caps. i touched one and just happened to be touching the chassis of the amp. knocked my ass straight to the floor. it was my good friends hot rod deville, and to this day when i see one i get a flashback to that lol. but that thing was the meanest sounding fender amp ive ever heard. absolutely snarled and growled.
I played it, and it's not really that bad. I still dig my DSL 100 cause the clean channel is so dynamic and ALIVE! Plus the DSL has the Deep switch which really brings out the bottom end and that lower midrange which fattens up the sound. When I use the H&K Tube factor, the overdrive is out of this world.
Sounds pretty fucking good. Who doesn't like this amp he doesn't like ROCK.. Simply the best sound of Marshall amp during decades is real now. Thanks Marshall and Slash.
i learned a hard lesson running a crate blue voodoo cold. couldnt figure out why tubes wouldnt last a week and id let it warm up for 20 minutes or so, but it needed an hour and i was running the thing hard as hell.
The OD3 is a perfect pedal with a Marshall stack. Believe me. Set the Marshall to a slight crunch and push the front end of it with a cranked Boss OD3 and you will never want another pedal in front of it again. It works on every try. Fattens the shit out of single coils and makes Humbuckers scream for days.
Kick ass amp if you ask me. I was testing it out at the guitar shop and really liked it, especially on the AFD setting. I was trying the EVH 50 watt head as well and though it had loads of gain even on just the crunch channel, I thought the Marshall had more character to it. The self attenuation makes a big difference as well. The Marshall YJM was very nice as well, and I'm not even a big Yngwie fan.
Man a JCM 800 with a cheap o distortion is what earned Marshall they're rep on this tone. One of they're older amps like a 2210 or 2203 with a DS-1 in front of it with 0 gain and the volume maxed will sound great all day. TONS of sustain, bite and without being harsh. I just tend to believe when you add too much gain it doesn't cut through in the mix. You need to stay powerful without being too loud and thats the problem with alot of the Marshall's I have played live with.
I learned a really hard lesson with a Bassman, I have blown tubes and seen fireworks go off in the back of amps but I got an old bassman did all checks on everything plugged it in turned it on, all good........Plugged in the guitar check, standby off, no sound....I didn't plug in the speaker out, I was young....WOOOOOh It burned up FAST! I saved it but I HAVE NEVER made that mistake since. It drove the impedance from 4 ohms to about 1 million and was not good.
iv got a marshall JVM. that amp has 12 channels! but still it cant quite reach this awesome tone. if any marshall could then the JVM would but the AFD100 has hit the nail on the head for sure, anyoen who disagrees is wrong and can go back to failing at music
@DylanB003 its down to preference. i am a slash fan searching for the slash tone. i wudnt get this amp myself due to the lack of a clean channel and also the limited amount of sounds available. when i play with my band i use a tone that you probably couldnt get out of the afd100 but still i think if you are after the afd tone then this is the amp for it.
Can you post what speakers were used, and what mic and where please. Great tone! But do agree its good or great only in the distortion area. My Mesa dual 2000 has better cleans but it's not made for cleans. I don't get that hot-rodded Marshall tone but then again, I'm not supposed to.
@grooveinthestate i meant if you put the od3 before the hellbender you can overdrive the hellbender to get more gain for lead, the wampler aint bad either
We have a guitarist portal in France. We are reporting in a databank, every flawed amps that needed repairs (other than tubes wearout). The AFD 100 is second behind the bugera 333XL.
@theflatearthsociety I was referring to you saying that the ToneLab has tubes in it...one 12ax7 isn't really going to do anything. I have a ValveTronix (similar circuit) and it's great, I wasn't trying to hate.
@EpicFlyingDude I run all old tube amps and used to run multiples live for Clean/rhythm/distortion. I love Fender Bassmans, Ampeg Gemini's, Marshall 1987 plexi's, I used to run some JCM 800's but really wasn't getting good tone. Tubes sound good b/c they get good and hot but they are vacuum tubes so they aren't going to stand up to a real beating for too long, I will say I have seen some amps go 4 years with no tube swaps BUT I have never seen a marshall go 1/5th of that long, they are pushed.
Any JCM 800 could give you the same sound if you are a good player and know how to twist the knobs correctly, maybe put a EQ or boost pedal up front if required.
My cat just jumped at my AFD while it was on the top of my 4x12 it slid backwards on to a shelf and then fell down the back on to a hard floor! ripping the leads out the back, crunch, i pluged it in and it works fine! not a mark on it either, built to be roadie proof i think!
+IGarrettI Changing the voltage on power tubes is called biasing. Less voltage means that your amp is less likely to break up at low volumes, giving you more headroom for your clean tones. More voltage means your amp breaks up faster and at a lower volume. Kinda like a Hendrix ish clean tone I suppose. However, biasing is a long procedure if you want to do that on a regular amp. Self biasing means you can control the break up volume easily with just the footswitch. That's what I understood from it at least :)
THis would make a good thrash amp I mean it replicates the sound of appettite of destruction even tho GNR isn't trash just listen to the bite and punch it pushes out I wonder how eargasmic it would sound boosted with a boss sd-1 or tube screamer
Dear brother demonstrator..Please please please in demos after this do one simple thing "turn down the guitar volume when playing" so we can hear what happens. No one turns down their amp gain during a performance everyone turns down their guitar volume.. how does the amp clean up is what we want to know. Otherwise nice demo.. Thanks
@millavanhalen I get your point and I get how people buy it for a classic tone but I still think it restricts you a fair amount for the money compared to what you could buy. I think too many people jump straight at marshall these days, they should look at Vox, Orange, Mesa Boogie, Hayden etc
Sorry, but I 've been reducing the volume of my Marshall amps for years with the return level of a later inserted fx loop ... this is anything new - except for Marshall?
You know, not saying that this wouldn't be a nice amp to own, specially if you are a slash fan. But my 1987 JCM800 does very very similar tones to the afd album. Of course I am more worried about being able to play like Slash rather than worrying about how the amp sounds in comparison to the album. Still, I wouldn't buy this amp because im trying to get closer to that sound. It's not worth the money then. However, it is a Slash signature amp.
I just worked out what AFD stands for, Appetite For Destruction. Doh. Is that the same as the #34 mod on the JCM800? So basically this is a modified JCM800?
Bob Outélama Why must you get soo salty with the reliabilaty thing? Lemme guess, you bought this amp and it crapped out on you soo you have to take out your frustrations because you feel like shit paying for it and it burned out on the Internet to tell everyone how bad ALL of these amps are after your fiasco???
No Dzemohendrix. I'm using very reliable Marshall plexi's of the early 70's without major problems (they naturally need care, like every amplifier). But I don't like when a brand take peoples for fools. Some dudes are going to put lots of money in it, so it should last. With reliability issues around a factor of 4/7 this is not something to take lightly.
Actually, I can sort of understand where he is coming from. My YJM100 has a fault with the PCB that handles the boost and gate. The boost is fine, but the gate is fucked. Rather than just get rid of the hiss, it completely mutes and muffles the sound. Its even more annoying that it comes on every time you engage the boost. Whats even worse is Marshall just don't make that part anymore and wont make anymore, so I'm stuck with a crapped out amp that is worthless because nobody wants a broken amp that literally can't be fixed.
@Olie23231 honestly with your logic buying slash's signature amp and buying all of john frusciante's equipment would essentially be the same thing. wouldnt they both be buying someone's tone basically? reguardless this amp is badass and as far as "restricting" tone this amp is pretty versatile disregarding the fact that it doesnt do cleans well. its way more versatile than a JCM 800 which is probably one of the most popular and sworn by amps ever made even though its definitely a 1 trick pony
as much as I like Slash, which is alot,I dont think I'll ever get this let alone afford it. Maybe as a collector or an enthusiast I would but for someone who wants to play professionally and pursue it as a career...I'd rather find my own sound.
You are totally right but before everyone starts worrying about Noise Gate, Boost, Auto Bias and Power Attenuation, shouldn't you all be worried about more standard stuff? This amp has no clean channel or Reverb. The lack of those means I'm no longer interested in this amp.
Sounds awesome man but you might as well have a trusty JCM800 which is basically what slash had in the 80's man, & it gives you the chance to make your own sound if you dont wanna' sound like the big man yourself.
@Olie23231 now let me stop you right there, first of all, a Marshall Amplifier is one of the most common amps used by famous guitarists; Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Slash (as you said), etc... simply because they amplify the best tone out there. A Marshall's Tone is no where near 'Boring or restricting'. If a kid at 13 years old wants to buy a Marshall amp, their making a great choice. Who cares if they want to 'Copy' slash? The Money you spend on this amp is well worth it.
The people want a regular Marshall 1959 with master volume. Marshall couldn't possibly do that. Slash wants a crappy amp with not only a master (MASTER!) but also basically a Bugera infinium indicator in there. Marshall wets themselves.
@Gabriopunk77 He toured with it and it wasn't stolen. He had toured with it and I believe had hired in some new techs, the head was rented from a local shop in California and was never returned thats how Slash got the head, it was a loaner and he kept it. One of the new techs saw a Property of ----------- Music Store or a rented sticker, anyway he returned it and Slash didn't know till it was a done deal.
@millavanhalen When it's guitars you can make them sound however you want, as they can be modified via amplification, amps however restrict and mould the sound produced a vast amount, therefore signature equipment restricts your sound. People shouldn't want to sound like other artists, they should want to sound like themselves! Do you think slash went out and bought a signature amp? And when slash first picked up a les paul no-one else in that scene was playing them
I just have two amps. One is a nice JMP 1987 replica the builder had put mustard caps in. I never get around to wiring it split cathode though, so it sounds like '67 era. The other is a Silver Jube 2525H that can do a Slash tone kind of. I got it because I did not trust my supposedly 100 watt rated reactive load box with something bigger. I have a Freyette Power Station now. Rated for 200 watts. Even so I still get nervous, because I blew up a JCM 2000 DSL 100 and a JMP 1959RR. I end up using Softube's Marshall licenced JMP 2203 plugin most of the time for quiet playing. So far I have not managed to blow up my PC. 🤣 I never found out what the tech said caused the 1959RR to blow up a week from new. Just that there was a lot of voltage where it was not supposed to be and it did so much damage they gave me a refund. Perhaps something was damaged in shipping to NZ. It's just the nature of the beast though. Over 400v in any amp will find a weakness and kill it, e.g,valves can often be so dodgy these days. Taking them in for regular check ups is the way to go, just like a good car owner has to do in order to prevent expensive engine rebuilds etc. But there's always some effects pedal or something that needs buying first 🙄
Sorry this amp does neither sound like AFD nor JCM800 #34 mod. There are so many people out there who have already done way better mods. So sorry that Marshall could not do it better. And the worst thing about it is that Slash is using this amp live. His sound is so crappy now, really missing the times when Adam Day was his tech and he had the most amazing sounds in GnR, Snakepit and VR. Really really sad about this sound.
WAIT ! The Jubilee is back, but a look inside is inviting me to be cautious. There is nothing of the jubilee quality inside. I would be very cautious. The AFD, already, is known as a mediocre amp for reliability. And the silver jubs will have to prove themselves.
@PerplexTV1 Slash is pretty popular right now so I guess that will make them more money. Also, the hendrix signature amp is the 100jh and it smokes the afd in tone.
@EpicFlyingDude I agree to an extent BUT they were road warriors and there is NO WAY that amp didn't have a couple of tubes fail and need a bias adjustment. That alone your in the guts already. I am a FREAK about my equipment and I play alot of shows and am working all the time b/c of it. I run an old marshall that was handwired with old mustard caps and its rediculous with strats. I KNOW someone with 0 idea has that amp in storage in Cali. somewhere.
It stilll never got very clean at all. I do like a little hair on my clean, like a cranked Fender sound. I am trying to narrow it down between an 800 or a Marshall Vintage/Modern 2266 50 watt Head. Which either one have a better clean sound than this.
@ESPsandEmgs Actually Marshall lifted the London Power Power Scaling circuit. Marshall always copied existing circuits so why stop now. Go to the London Power website and learn about what really goes in to tube amp design. Kevin O'Connor is one of "the" key amp men. Check out Fargin amps and Stephensons Amps too! They do license Power Scaling unlike Marshall. Glad to see Power Scaling is now reaching the masses as it does indeed stop hearing loss without giving up the melting cranked sound.
@millavanhalen Amen bro!! I hate buying sig gear(except for Les Pauls of course)but this AFD100 sounds amazing. It truly is the best amp Marshall has released in years.
Why was there a lot of mystery about the original amp?? was Slash that fucked up he couldnt remember what kinda amp he played??? or did the studio not tell him what he was playing through???
The amp sounds great. Well done!
They need to reissue this amp and do it right this time: fix all the issues of the initial run and sell it in a 20 watt studio series outfit
That power knob is pretty sweet. Would be nice to have one of those on the back panel of most Marshalls! Bypassable obviously, just in case you're not into that kinda thing~
Two features all marshall amps should have. Selfbias and power knob. Makes life ao much easier
Especially on plexi reissues, but it's too damn logical! They would sell like hot cakes if they did!
Yeah but remember that amp will be damaged more often because of a lot of the components in it.
There's no amps at 20 watt with EL34. It's only EL84.
100/50 watt - EL34
If runned in A-Class, this is possible.
Marshall built an amplifier like that recently. Although I don't know the quality of the amp.
Groove Tubes made a Soul O version with two EL34, delivering 20w.
MJW had the Goldstar, reaching 10w with a single EL34. Optional, you could have had a live version, that had two EL34 for delivering 20w.
We need a reissue of this beast!
I have this amp and love it. I like Slash but you don’t need to be a Slash fan to enjoy the sound. Well done Marshall.
ive heard of that. never done it myself because my amp was always stationary, lucky too, but i had a pretty good lesson on changing caps. i touched one and just happened to be touching the chassis of the amp. knocked my ass straight to the floor. it was my good friends hot rod deville, and to this day when i see one i get a flashback to that lol. but that thing was the meanest sounding fender amp ive ever heard. absolutely snarled and growled.

hyper amazing hard rock crunch!! I have a Soldano Avenger. but I love this amp too.

Fattens the shit out of single coils and makes Humbuckers scream for days.
one of the best amp they made in long time...make it a limited run...great genius..wonderfull...
Yeah just like they made the Randy Rhoads one a limited run too
@goerge4 Probably the G12T-75s
just watched Chris demo the SL-5 at the British Guitar Show, fantastic player, nice guy and very nice amp.....
I just tend to believe when you add too much gain it doesn't cut through in the mix. You need to stay powerful without being too loud and thats the problem with alot of the Marshall's I have played live with.
@castless thats what the afd sound is aswell, just not with computers with outboard gear and eq on the desk
Marshall should make these modern features( auto bias, power attenuation) to other amps.
The best Marshall ever made is the JCM Slash. In my humble opinion. Yes I know it's a silver jub, but I prefer the way the Slash looks.
well the original amp was a rental. His manager took it back after the album was made. It wasnt seen since then. :)
iv got a marshall JVM. that amp has 12 channels! but still it cant quite reach this awesome tone. if any marshall could then the JVM would but the AFD100 has hit the nail on the head for sure, anyoen who disagrees is wrong and can go back to failing at music
I have never heard of Slash using JCM900s. On AFD he used a 1959 Marshall which later disappeared. He went on to use Jubilees and JCM800s.
Greatest amplifier ever made.
No, sorry. It was too early to write that. Now, we are facing a violent setback. Quality of this amp has been proven catastrophic.
Bob Outélama Mine has worked flawlessly. Don't know what you're talking about.
We have a guitarist portal in France. We are reporting in a databank, every flawed amps that needed repairs (other than tubes wearout). The AFD 100 is second behind the bugera 333XL.
I'm from Russia. The same issues were with my AFD100 too. Add me to your databank list too please.
@theflatearthsociety I was referring to you saying that the ToneLab has tubes in it...one 12ax7 isn't really going to do anything. I have a ValveTronix (similar circuit) and it's great, I wasn't trying to hate.

@andrewkadar yep for the hellbender but for the boss ... not really sure. Thanks man ! i have to try the wampler plextortion too.
1960A or a Mesa Boogie works really well with this head!
I really would like to know more about amps. What does self bias mean? Thanks up top for the answer!
+IGarrettI It biases the tubes on its own.
BionicSammich no.fucking.shit?!
IGarrettI Its some real black magic voodoo wizardry shit.
+IGarrettI Changing the voltage on power tubes is called biasing. Less voltage means that your amp is less likely to break up at low volumes, giving you more headroom for your clean tones. SickMetalAddict Thank you very much for this amazing answer!
Sounds like a proper Marshall should.
THis would make a good thrash amp I mean it replicates the sound of appettite of destruction even tho GNR isn't trash just listen to the bite and punch it pushes out I wonder how eargasmic it would sound boosted with a boss sd-1 or tube screamer
4:53 Best Tone from a Marshall I've ever heard.
The best CLEAN tone lmao

that VNeck has a built-in attenuation unit.
I love the amp but I am wonder how much extra is it because it has Slash's name on it?
@insidemarshall PLEASE ANSWER. Where is Chris George from? Accent sounds like northern british isles, almost scottish sometimes...yorkshire?
what changes between the AFD and 34 stages within the amplifier? is it a solid state component that changes the gain or what?
Gain structure.
@MrAviiC What I was saying is that they get paid to slap their names on it.I was wondering what the mark up was just for that.
@Noneedforaname97 well thats what it is for people trying to get that sound i think it sounds awsome
Sorry, but I 've been reducing the volume of my Marshall amps for years with the return level of a later inserted fx loop ... this is anything new - except for Marshall?
For those who don't want to wait, he really starts to play at 3:31
Very beautiful sound but....I think it was a processed sound took by microphone. It's not real sound we heard from the cabinet
You know, not saying that this wouldn't be a nice amp to own, specially if you are a slash fan. But my 1987 JCM800 does very very similar tones to the afd album. Of course I am more worried about being able to play like Slash rather than worrying about how the amp sounds in comparison to the album. I just worked out what AFD stands for, Appetite For Destruction. Doh. Is that the same as the #34 mod on the JCM800? So basically this is a modified JCM800?
It's a modified something yes. With attrocious reliability.

@MrMagnificents So you think is says like "slash logo 200$" ?
@diablo9333 the Tonelab has a single 12ax7 in it...doesn't really mean anything...
Does the AFD come with a cabinet?? And if not, what cabinet do I need to get this type of tone??
They did actually. JVM 410HJS has got noise gate :)
@PerplexTV1 jimi has a signature amp yet
@Olie23231
honestly with your logic buying slash's signature amp and buying all of john frusciante's equipment would essentially be the same thing. wouldnt they both be buying someone's tone basically? reguardless this amp is badass and as far as "restricting" tone this amp is pretty versatile disregarding the fact that it doesnt do cleans well. its way more versatile than a JCM 800 which is probably one of the most popular and sworn by amps ever made even though its definitely a 1 trick pony
@MrMagnificents Haha wtf? its based on Slash's appetite sound. So the slash name doesnt cost... Its HIS sound
I could get this sound with a jcm 800 4104 at the volume at 1 or 2!!! I still wanna try to get one
as much as I like Slash, which is alot,I dont think I'll ever get this let alone afford it. Maybe as a collector or an enthusiast I would but for someone who wants to play professionally and pursue it as a career...I'd rather find my own sound.
Pickin mine up in an hour! So fuckin excited, what an xmas present!!!!!!!!
My amp kind of buzzes alot.. I was wondering what fellow owners of the amp are doing or if they have the same problem.
@KORINALOVER
Chris is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet
seperate volumes for the 2 channels I hope ?
thats a traditional that use a 57 classic, wich is very similar to the AP2
No it doesn't. The cab used there, and by Slash as well, is a Marshall 1960av.
You are totally right but before everyone starts worrying about Noise Gate, Boost, Auto Bias and Power Attenuation, shouldn't you all be worried about more standard stuff? This amp has no clean channel or Reverb. The lack of those means I'm no longer interested in this amp.
getting this amp before christmas \m/
sounds great
Sounds awesome man but you might as well have a trusty JCM800 which is basically what slash had in the 80's man,
& it gives you the chance to make your own sound if you dont wanna' sound like the big man yourself.
@willeng84 whatever the price is not more expensive than those you prefer. and ´for that price you get an special editiin rising in price at time.
@Olie23231 now let me stop you right there, first of all, a Marshall Amplifier is one of the most common amps used by famous guitarists; Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Slash (as you said), etc... simply because they amplify the best tone out there. The Money you spend on this amp is well worth it.
@Packy11920 Agreed.
The people want a regular Marshall 1959 with master volume. Marshall couldn't possibly do that. Slash wants a crappy amp with not only a master (MASTER!) but also basically a Bugera infinium indicator in there. Marshall wets themselves.
AJ Coleman You are biased as fuck.
u mean piss themselves
@Gabriopunk77 He toured with it and it wasn't stolen. He had toured with it and I believe had hired in some new techs, the head was rented from a local shop in California and was never returned thats how Slash got the head, it was a loaner and he kept it. One of the new techs saw a Property of ----------- Music Store or a rented sticker, anyway he returned it and Slash didn't know till it was a done deal.
OH NO!!THAT DUDE AGAIN!!!
And when slash first picked up a les paul no-one else in that scene was playing them
Since this is supose to sound as appetite he should play something like Nightrain to show how close it get's
why does slash get signiture everythings all the time? I want a tom morello signitrue guitar and a jimi hendrix signiture amp and strat
I better get saving those pennys
I never found out what the tech said caused the 1959RR to blow up a week from new.
+Heiko Hufnagl The Jubilee is back :D
+AslatIE Yeeeees! And it seems that Adam Day is also onboard again! Happy!
WAIT ! The Jubilee is back, but a look inside is inviting me to be cautious. There is nothing of the jubilee quality inside. I would be very cautious. The AFD, already, is known as a mediocre amp for reliability. And the silver jubs will have to prove themselves.
Heiko Hufnagl,.- Get the JCM 800 a Boss digital delay & a Boss Blues Driver ll,. and you will be kickin ass with Awesome Sound,!!
I totally agree!!!
he didn't take the amp back, one of his techs did it by accident after Slash told him not to
@PerplexTV1
Slash is pretty popular right now so I guess that will make them more money.
Also, the hendrix signature amp is the 100jh and it smokes the afd in tone.
best amp ever
I think the #34 mode sounds more Apetite than the AFD mode...
I KNOW someone with 0 idea has that amp in storage in Cali. somewhere.
Yes!, and Noise Gate!!!
sounds like slash and acdc blended together :D i woould give anything for one
It stilll never got very clean at all. I do like a little hair on my clean, like a cranked Fender sound. I am trying to narrow it down between an 800 or a Marshall Vintage/Modern 2266 50 watt Head. Which either one have a better clean sound than this.
can i use this as a stereo in my car ?
Why did they make this limited edition, 2300 amps are sold easily. I dont understand.
Ceriatone AFD,here i come!
Any marshall with vintage 30's
This Amps Rock as is Owner....)))°°°++++
What would be a good combo that I can use for bass and electric guitar.?
A Marshall Lead & Bass combo. Too bad they didn't make them this side of 1976
You looks lke Tremontti dude
@millavanhalen Amen bro!! I hate buying sig gear(except for Les Pauls of course)but this AFD100 sounds amazing. It truly is the best amp Marshall has released in years.
Why was there a lot of mystery about the original amp?? was Slash that fucked up he couldnt remember what kinda amp he played??? or did the studio not tell him what he was playing through???
