I had the bright cap removed from the high treble channel volume and I found it made the amp much more palatable with plenty of bite still. This amp is incredible
G'day Leon I was just talking to Alex from Sirius about these, I had my eye on one when he offered me one of his handbuilt masterpices that covers all these tones and then some. I've had it for a week now and its blown my mind!
I have the combo its absolutely the best sounding amp i have ever owned. I'm selling my 1979 Jmp 50w which i have played and toured with OCDC Acdc tribute for 11 years. yeah really, its that good and i'm getting the head version. Can't touch this amp.
Have the baby JCM800 (SC20H), sounds better than JCM800 I had from the 1980's. Better gain stage, and having an fx loop opens up multiple possibilites such as 4 cable method.
This is an awesome amp for use in the studio. It has great edge of breakup tones when you dial the gain back. Almost a little bit of Vox Chime at these lower gain settings.
Yea! Very few candidates out there for the "1 Amp" album chameleon, but this head could do a whole record if you had a cab with an Alnico Blue and a G12H/G12M@@LeonTodd
I know a guy who went anorexic to afford a Diezel Herbert in the initial offering. He went from Ramen and Rice chex to no food and a third job. He lost so much weight that his third employer asked him wtf was he into. He thought it was drugs but when he found out he was starving to buy amps he told him to take a pizza everyday. 🤣
I’ve got this and the SC20H and it’s surprising how similar they are stock. The SC is a little less spikey in the top end, but there’s not a lot in it. I run my SV just how you had it and my SC with the master volume and pre amp gain at about 1.30. I think an SD1 in front of the SC sounds as 80s rock as you can get.
I'm really enjoying the sv20h going into an alnico cream, i use a ironman-ii mini attenuator. I had a heritage g12h30 55hz in closed back cab but the cream in an open back 👌
Another wonderful run through Leon. Straight in with it from the off. Plenty of tone playing, pup switching, guitar pot control. And your talk throughs are A1. Love what you are achieving with this amp. In fact, everything you demo and try out for us, you make it sound so good even if in conclusion, you end up as not a big fan of something. Testament to your playing. Legend 🤘🤘.
Super nice playing Leon as always. These studio amps still pack a punch into a cab. I got mine into a Freyette PS-100 which really helps get it in the sweet spot without angry neighbors. I picked mine up on a trip to Bangkok where you can find some rediculous new amp deals - legit shops with legit amps at real low prices. Love to see you try out the JTM or SC 👍
I'm running the same set up. I've been gigging this amp for 3 years. Fist 2 I ran it with a Weber Mass. Been using the Fryette PS100 since last July. Much better and I use the extra channel on the Fryette as a lead boost.
I have an sc20h. For a pretty simple amp its quite versatile. I tend to keep the preamp pretty high, otherwise it gets very bright because of the bright cap and then i use my guitars volume if i want a cleaner tone. The low input is great too, works pretty well with a big muff or ds-1. I play, grunge, 80's hair metal, and alternative rock on this amp and its perfect for those styles.
I've been GASsing for this little amp for quite a while, but Fractal adding its model a few months ago kinda stopped my GAS, for the moment at least. I guess you'll do a comparison soon between this and the fractal sim, right? 😬
All the Studio series amps are great…I have the Studio Jubilee, and in many ways I prefer it to my 87 100 watt jubilee…The Plexi is great too…Only downside is the prices here in the US,roughly $1800 for one of these…
I'm leaning towards getting a Friedman, because they have master volumes, while the Marshall SV-20 and ST-20 don't, although they the 5 watt triode option. I couldn't decide so I got the little JTM 50th anniversary 1 watter for now, even it can get too loud for home use if not careful. I'll probably go for the ST-20 eventually.
The last thing I really need is another amp (I have an old JCM800, an Origin 50 as well as a bunch of others), but damn you make this sound good. Definitely tempting if I come across one used locally.
Very cool - I have been toying with the idea of getting one of these - Or maybe, I should get the JTM ST20H instead ... or both. I have already admitted that these early Marshall tones are exactly what makes me tick.
Got the combo version, swapped out the original speaker for a creamback, its very dynamic just like a higher wattage plexi, my only niggle is it has a 10 inch speaker, other than this its a fab unit.
Yeah, Marshall should have opted for 12-inch speakers in all the combo versions of the Studio like they did for the Jubilee and JTM. Furthermore, a Greenback would have been a nice choice for the SV.
I was hopping I would finally hear a comparison between 20 and 5 watts power mode, on a decent demo! Also I wanted to hear a volume pedal in the loop, just to hear the preamp section distortion! :/ .... And when you do the SC20H demo don't forget to crank it to 10 and make it sound like a plexi (and a side by side with this one!)
Hi Leon- great tones. I bought the same amp recently 2nd hand. I also just bought a ticket to see AC/DC play in Europe this summer - the concert ticket almost cost as much as the amp 😂
Awesome amp indeed and awesome playing, Leon. Have you tried the JTM studio yet ? Marshall should concentrate on making these and not headphones 'n' earbuds etc. Got all the studios, fcuk'ing ace little amps !
York Audio, MRSH 412 M25- "421V-1". For a real cab the Marshall 2061CX is awesome. Marshall should re-release that cab specifically for this head. It looks so much better.
Its funny Leon bc my first actual head was a 1972 marshall super bass 100w. It was just that… turned the mids all the way, treble at 1 oclock bass at 10 and crank it. Loudest freakin thing ive heard ever and since. Ridiculous and it only sounded good cranked. But i still set eqs up like that. And I love the Lionel Richie guitar line
@@LeonToddTry it with the Legendary Tones Hot Mod or Mr Scary. Neat little reversible plug in mod that gives you an extra preamp tube. Really ups the ante. If he cant fix it, its going back to the shop! Very disappointed 2nd PRS SE that is crap! 😅😅. Sorry for the rant, this amp sounds good, how do you rate this with the Marshall studio JTM?
i boost sv20 with od3 and it sounds greater than sd1
Месяц назад
Unfortunately the combo comes with only a 10" speaker and the way it is biased the tubes are starved at only 50% instead of at nearly 90% like it should be.
I've noticed you've been using that DGT a lot lately. Are those really that good? I keep hearing people say they're great, and every so often someone will review it or I'll see a comment that makes it seem like they're not all they're cracked up to be. Most recently, I saw someone describe them as "Vanilla."
No guitar is going to keep everyone happy. If you like PRS and you like old Strats and Les Paul's then it's pretty much the best blend of vintage and modern styling and tone out there atm. The core is phenomenal and the SE is very good.
The PRS SE DGT is worth trying for its neck, which has a unique profile among the SE guitars, if nothing else. Personally, I think it is great for as close as I will get to playing an LP (due to neck geometry).
Incredible sound you get out of that PRS Se DGT. I have one as well and just too much bass in it for a band situation. I have a Epiphone Les Paul Lazarus (Joe Bonamassa) which is so much better in comparison. But I guess Leon is very good at making a great sound.
@@andreasjohnson4502Have you considered modding your SE DGT with a concentric (i.e. stacked) 500kΩ/500kΩ audio pot for the first position to make room for a 1MΩ, reverse-audio bass pot (G&L style)? I plan to keep my electronics mostly stock (replacing the standard pots with duplicates of the stock, push/pull pot for series pair and neck polarity-reversal options) because my SE DGT should be somewhat representative of production for demo purposes.
No, I haven’t started modding it. The guitar itself is good with the neck and the tremolo. I might sell it as I don't have the skiĺls and knowledge to do the mods you indicate above.

The Marshall SC20H also sounds absolutely killed with SD-1 in front, it's the pedal that just delivers.

Your riff game was on fireeee in this video. So many great songs!
Got one of these around 2 or 3 years ago and it is such an enjoyable amp to use. Very easy to get lost in this thing for hours lol.
Michael Schenker and Kings X riffs all in the same sequence = awesome!
Great playing and sound, Leon. Very inspiring!
Added a switch to choose the bright cap value on mine. Can wholeheartedly recommend that to anyone. Sick amp.
