Notice how everyone on that stage, even though they are still playing their instruments it just completely focused on Dave. All of them have these stupid smiles on their faces, they can't believe they are sharing a stage with him and they cant believe how good he is. Some of them even laugh, they just look at each other in awe at how unbelievably good Gilmour is, how in touch he is with the instrument, how he makes it sound so perfect.

Consider this. This song's opening intro was originally Gilmour playing in the center of an empty Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The sounds he made that day were boosted by Pink Floyd's sound engineers and technology, resulting in what we got when the song released. But this...hearing it in an open arena in Pompeii from the man himself just blows me away. Absolutely phenomenal. When he hits that low sustained note, it damn near shatters your soul.

The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers
But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking
He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough
His blood has frozen and curdled with fright
His knees have trembled and given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
    His step has faltered
    One world, one soul
    Time pass, the river roll
And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be
There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder than words
    Of promises broken

Sorrow is just awesome. That guitar intro numbs the brain. I saw Floyd do this in London 1994. Audience were simply overwhelmed by sonic impact. And this was only one track we were assaulted by... No other gig I have been to remotely approaches that night at Earls Court. Makes today's typical bands look utterly peurile. ❤😊❤

The word SIGNATURE was invented for this guy! Nobody does this stuff like Dave Gilmour - NOBODY!! Anybody can learn to make sounds with flying fingers on a fretboard but NOBODY but DG can compose stuff like this that just GETS DOWN INTO THE MITOCHONDRIA OF THE SOUL and stirs you to the core!! He is the Crème-de-la-Crème of worldclass guitarists. David Gilmour is THE MASTER of soul-stirring guitar composition and performance. If I were forced to choose only one guitarist to listen to for the rest of my life and none others, there would be NO HESITATION - NONE! It would be the one and only, David Gilmour.
I AM GOING TO MISS DAVID when he exits mortality’s stage and passes thru the veil to the other side. At age 62 I’ve been listening to his soul-stirring, emotion-evoking music for most of my life now. In all my life, his masterful guitarwork is the ONLY guitarwork that has ever brought a tear to my eye - specifically, his guitar solo in the middle of his performance of Elvis Presley’s “Don’t” ... and his opening and closing tracks, “5 A.M.” and “And Then...” on his album “Rattle That Lock”.
It’ll surely hit me like losing a family member on the day I learn that David is no longer with us. I no doubt I speak for the majority of his fans in saying that.
Touch someone’s soul deeply enough and you are beloved for life. Such has been the impact of David Gilmour and his wondrous gift of musical composition and guitarwork on this man’s life.

💖David Gilmour has a mission on earth to produce quality music, including for the 90s generation. Born March 6, 1946. My grandmother, March 8, 1945 (died March 15, 2020). I am honored by a generation that was born at the end of the war, after the war. Because they had a rather difficult childhood, but they left something useful on earth. 💖
