- Weird Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome | Atypical Clinical Features of IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder involving chronic and recurrent abdominal pain and changes in bowel habit. Some of the hallmark clinical features of IBS include abdominal pain that co-occurs with changes in bowel habit, which includes diarrhea, constipation or an alternating of the two. In this lesson, we discuss the more rare and atypical (strange or weird) that occur in IBS that many individuals don’t think about, including psychological issues and sexual dysfunction.

Anxiety, worry, stress
I've has ibs for years and although cutting out grains, dairy and processed foods have definitely helped but it still lingers.
I had IBS for 30 years. Cutting wheat and gluten from my diet cured it. What I'd thought was good all those years was in fact the problem.
I became celiac and had no choice, I’m sure it would help other bowel problems. I have a colonoscopy every 2-3 years. I believe there a must, especially if you have bowel cancer in the family.
I went on Keto, lost 75 lbs. and never had IBS or heartburn since! 👍🙏😁
@@HotSeat17 congrats. keto is amazing. your metabolic health will improve and you'll have no worries about developing type 2 diabetes.
@@HotSeat17 The keto diet is dangerous meat and high fat cheese is bad. Duh
@@CaptainSteve777 But you'll have plenty of worries about developing Cardiovascular disorders such as strokes, heart attacks, and erectile dysfunction due to increased LDL cholesterol and absolutely NO intake of Fiber.
Sleep problems due to gastrointestinal stress are my biggest issue with IBS as well. It usually takes 2-3 hours till I can sleep. A heat cushion for the stomach is still the best remedy.
I have been using celery ,cucumbers and eating a balanced diet. No processed foods or alteast minimum. My health has improved. I quit my multivitamin that was one a day because it was causing digestive problems. 95 % of multivitamins are synthethic and are unhealthy to use.
Same with me idk whether I have ibs or not but whenever I eat something different then my usual routine, I can't sleep because of pain in my stomach
In the late 80s and 90s they told me that IBS had nothing to do with appetite, sleep, or sexual issues. They said the only connection had to be psychosomatic. I changed doctors but never heard anything like what you say except on the internet. Crushing fatigue and insomnia was as much a part of cycling as diarrhea and constipation.
As a dietetics student, the main reason I hear for sleep issues is the necessity for IBS patients to urgently have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, or other such unpleasant symptoms such as abdominal pain.
Please book in for a colonoscopy
I wrote a comment above. I had all of these issues and more after a neck/ pelvis injury. So, a broken tail bone, fall on butt, or neck whiplash can set off all of these symptoms. Traditional osteopath, craniosacral work may help. Twisting and pushing the neck and pelvis ( like some chiropractic techniques) can be dangerous. That was my original injury.
@@retrogal8888 I had one two weeks ago, all clear--IBS can't be diagnosed with colonoscopy
Bipolar anxiety a lot lot of people with mental illness have ibs too
You missed back pain with IBS . . .Backpain hurts really
Thanks for another well thought out educational tool!
It takes me a long time to get rid of the pain after i go. I usually have to lie down for about 2 hours and sleep before I get any relief. ❤
Same!
I have ibs so bad it's literally killing me. I have every symptom in this video , I've lost 60 lbs , I can't sleep, afraid to eat. It's been 5yrs now and flaired up so badly I have lost hope. I WROTE A FOLLOW UP COMMENT... IT ONLY GETS WORSE. I PRAY FOR EVERYONE HERE YOU NEVER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE WHAT I HAVE. 42YRS OLD SENT HOME TO ROTT
Been having lower abdomen pain for 2 months now, contant low grade aching, sometimes I get insomnia from it, been to many doctors, had CT scans and colonoscopy, all clear, but urologist will run a cytoscope in 2 weeks, like a catheter with a camera to see if there's something the CT Scan missed
I have the same symptoms like yours, please share your findings here.q
I Guess a good doctor can cure
it’s all in your nervous system. once u desensitize it you will go back to living👍🏿
and youre sure its not cancer?
You should talk about back pain with IBS, because I don’t think it’s that well known. I didn’t know about it, and I have both. I get constipated when I have back pain, or sometimes have diarrhea. I don’t know the mechanism why this happens.
Did you experience a ankle pain or joint pain
@@isaiahrafaelpena8287 lower back (right side), piriformis muscle tightness
@@isaiahrafaelpena8287 @HugoMarquez The Piriformis muscle crosses over the Sciatic nerve that runs down the thigh, becomes the Tibial Nerve bellow the knee. IF compressed by a tight or inflamed Piriformis Muscle or any other inflammation in the area, can cause nerve pain lower in the leg, ankle or foot. Also, the Lumbo-Sacral Nerve Plexus can be irritated in some way (this is located at the lower back and the triangle area just above the Glutes). These nerves supply the pelvis and part of the digestive tract. Can be painful but also have an effect on digestion, but mainly evacuation (rectum). it's a two-way highway, though. Irritation in the gut can cause pain in those nerves, but also the condition of those nerves can effect the gut. If it's difficult to figure out what's triggering your flares, then try the opposite and work on your nervous system with anti-stress and nervous system regulation techniques. It's possible to gain conscious control over the nervous system and keep your body in parasympathetic mode. take some time, but worth it.

I drink fresh ginger tea daily, it really soothes and heals your digestive system. Simply peel ginger root and cut up in small peices and bring to a boil. Let seep for 20 minutes...add a touch of honey .
Thank you I’m going to try this right now I’m feeling horrible and extremely fatigued I hope it helps
For me, its embarrassing to talk about since I'm a woman but looking back now I believe I've had IBS for about 10 years now( I'm 29). I've never been diagnosed & I never really put 2 & 2 together however my symptoms have been getting worse since I had my child 4 years ago. I struggle with stomach cramps, a combo of constipation & diarrhea, gas & bloating. I also get itchy skin, hair loss, & acne. I always contributed those to my PCOS(Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Knowing now hormones & IBS typically go hand in hand, its probably a combo of both. I also suffer from insomnia & frequent urination but that's been my whole life.
You can improve both of symptoms with the help of doctors
Hi there- I’ve always struggled with stomach pain / irregular bowel moments, especially recently, and have been looking for answers anywhere I can. When I read your comment,, I literally thought it was me writing it! I have every single thing you mention- thinning hair, acne, etc. Just curious if you found out whether all of your symptoms were related to IBS or not? Any recommendations you can give on things you have done to help with any symptoms?
This is very true. I think I have IBS. I always have gas, diarrhoea and burning in my lower abdomen. I think this is causing me mild testicular pain and low libido. I also experience burning after ejaculation.
U have child
I have all these
I might have in’s because I’m having constant stomach pain and chest pain
ts not just diet, started the 4,8 breathing. IBS cleared up in just 6 weeks, You have to BELIEVE in the breathing. If you dont you wont do the breathing STRESS plays a major role in IBS
I was doing the breath work thru out the day This calms your nervous system , now your calming your body thru out the day
Hey, can u give an update?
An unstable sacrum/pelvis, with pressure on cauda equina nerves and the attachment of the filum in the sacrum, can cause all kinds of bowel issues. As well, a displaced C1 can ( with consequent pressures on on cranial nerves from altered spinal fluid drainage ) can also cause huge issues. Gentle Traditional osteopaths and craniosacral work may help? Twisting and snapping the neck and pelvis can be dangerous. ( brought to you by a person who had terrible GI issues - and much more- after a pelvis and neck injury)
Is this from experience? Because you're spot on. Unstable pelvis is likely due to leaning away from the site of pain chronically and also bracing for pain cause muscle imbalance over time.
@@Jaikay1 The sacrum is held in place by ligaments. So a fall on the tail bone or excessive side/ side movements ( like lots of tennis ? ) - high kicks, repetitive kicking ( like soccer? ), even hitting brakes hard - can all destabilize the sacrum/ pelvis. There may be congenital conditions that contribute to problems : off- midline fusion of the filum to the dura inside the sacrum. ( not rare - neurosurgeons from Univ. of Alabama found this in 3 out of 27 normal cadavers). Also hypermobility - like Ehlers Danlos, tight spinal cord attachment. Yes, my experience.
Yesssss! This is exactly my assessment. Thanks for sharing, was a huge sign I'm on the right track. Much love and be well.

To me ibs sounds more like a collection of symptoms. These ibs-like symptoms can be associated with other underlying causes. Some doctors are more responsible and prone to diagnose people. That’s why some patients eventually find out the true cause of their symptoms. However, there are more doctors who are happy to DIAGNOSE patients with ibs based on patients’ symptoms and/or endoscopy results, ignoring small bowel and hepatic organs, which is a huge concern to me.
Hi there, i have similar gut problems. Worst is frequent thin stools with no blood or abdominal pain. Have u experienced that?
I don't have any of ibs symptoms. Have you tried to seek any professional help? Hope you have the right doctor who is not rushing through appointments or too conservative to order tests. I've heard too many people complaining of ignorant doctors. @@navbharat1443
I recommend looking into SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), it explains lot the symptoms behind of IBS.
This is a great video, is there a follow up of what someone should do to cure themselves or solve the issue? I know people say cut out gluten and dairy. Is that true?
Cutting out wheat and dairy made a huge difference for me. So does having Bentyl on hand when stress causes an episode. Best of luck!
honestly just trying little bits of different foods you may enjoy just to see how your body reacts was really helpful for me because everyone’s body is different and especially particular when it comes to IBS.
My chronic IBS symptoms almost cured with a healthy keto /intermittent fasting diet and the spasmodic acute and distressing attacks where I'd be in the bathroom vomiting bile and bile diarrhoea all night with agonising stomach cramps are mercifully now history🎉❤
@@suziemizon685 hi, can share your diet? I'm also suffering from the above symptoms. Thanks
Urinary urgency can be the result of a bloated abdomen pressing on the bladder.
This bloating can also cause pressure on your back, leading to back pains.
I have urinary urgency
I can relate my problem exactly, suffering from last 15 years consulted almost 100+ doctors: i want to get online consultation please let me know how can i do so. Thank you
I have IBS. So I’ve been educated. I have all of these weird symptoms. Lol Seriously‼️
I had a natural childbirth and it doesn't compare to the pain I have when I have a flare up ,and I get so sick ,the vomiting won't stop and I try to fight as long as I can but eventually end up at the hospital .
Yes second that, I’ve had 3 natural child births and the cramps I get before I go to the toliet is worse then labour.
I have been saying it's as bad as contractions. Also natural no medicated birth. Makes me sweaty and I groan and Pant just like labour. It's hideous
Maybe it's diverticulosis. Have you had any tests to rule that out?
IBS 2 years now already had a colonoscopy done, endoscopy in 3 weeks, had an MRI, ultrasound, X-ray, medications, fiber, probiotics etc etc and more recently tried mushroom coffee. Nothing has worked. I'm at a loss.
IBS really threatening. . .back pain fatigue and much more
Yep and sharp pain in abdomen and chest and finger tips sometimes
So what about all tests its ok?
Sounds like pretty much every test I was given about three years ago going on four years now been going through it. 🙏🏽🥺just happy to still be alive and hopefully find a cure someday 💯
@@abhayagarwal5097 do you feel pain or swelling in lower abdomen? Sometimes near umbilical area...leg finger nail pain..
I take alfroex tablets our buscupan the bloating is terrible plus menopause
Hi JJ Medicine. The doctors think i have IBS, but for some reason i can eat many of the so called avoidable foods (onions and beans as example) however i get excruciating bowel pain and increased need to defecate if i eat any products that are wheat based (things such as dextrose, citric acid, glucose-fructose syrup, mannitol, modified wheat starch, unspecified modified starch etc.. So I´m here thinking that i have some sort of a wheat hypersensitivity, but the doctors around here (north europe) don´t seem to think that that is a real thing. I also have some of the symptoms listed on this video, that i did not know belonged to IBS. What do you think? Is wheat hypersensitivity a thing or do i just have a weird IBS? Or are these two things actually the same thing? Are there any studies on IBS patients and wheat based ingredients? I like i don´t think many people know that for example citric acid is made out of wheat. Could it just be that the doctors are not aware of this, or refuse to accept the fact that maybe not all of the wheat gets processed to the atomic form of citric acid and some actual wheat remains? Any thoughts? Other people with similar issues can also respond.
My worst trigger food was always corn, popped, on the cob and whole kernel for sure. I guess I should also try to avoid corn chips but I never thought that far.
if i eat anything with whey, gluten or inulin, i get horrible pain and nausea. ive been tested for everything under the sun and the say IBS
much of the things you listed: "dextrose, citric acid, glucose-fructose syrup, mannitol" are not wheat based.
@@stopupdatinggoogle in europe they are. On America they mostly from corn and in asia from rice.
Look into low fodmap diet. It sounds like you have a sensitive to fructose
So I just got these symptoms and I've had them for about a week now what should I do
Is it common to have excess mucus and congestion due to IBS? I have the bloating, burning chest, and fatigue symptoms from certain food triggers (especially onions and garlic), but I am having a hard time finding information on the mucus portion of it. If I eat one of these food triggers the next 2-4 days I have the worst congestion headaches, itchy eyes, and constant runny nose
I have plenty food triggers and symptoms. The one that was easy to cure was Excessive Mucus. I just stopped eating cheese and stopped eating dairy and muffins lol. If you could avoid the best food with sugar, you can get rid of mucus. I still get the regular amount of mucus and stuffy nose, but that's because the amount of crap "they" throw from the planes. Or pollen or allergies.
I have joint inflammation, itchy eye, sometimes gum pain, feeling burning inside almost everywhere, I had constipation most of my life. How do you test it, my doctor never cared to help me figure it out
Dairy is a huge trigger for excess mucus & inflammation in the sinuses. I get the same. I've had a stuffy nose for years. Still trying to cut out dairy. It's hard!
@@Freeduradura I feel the same way

Persistent belching and farting, During the day before I go to sleep and when I get up in the morning
I had similar problem with the belching frequency and worked with a holistic dietician about my weight but when I mentioned the constant burping her suggestion was my digestive system wasn't producing enough enzymes. There are pills you can take, but I started eating papaya around meal times to test her theory since it was cheaper for me (either before or after i ate it didn't matter to me as a dessert or snack) but..the belching stopped! and after a month or two i've stopped eating the papaya and seems to be ok. it may help you too. papaya has similar enzymes to our digestive system and is often given to people with slower digestive process, so you may just need a little boost
farting is actually the only thing that relieves the symptoms for me a bit
Is IBS likely a symptom for some of MCAS?
What is the stool color with ibs...mine is yellow
I have all these symptoms
Did you get better? I've had them for a week now
What about worms? Is there a connection? I think there is.
describes me to the T. I have all those symptoms caused by my military service. I;m a mess
I started eating avocados on toast for breakfast.
After 3 weeks I started to get bloating, and increased gas and defecation.
I thought that I had developed IBS.
Long story short, I took panacur (fenbendazole).
I took 5ml of panacur 25 for 20 days.
After 12 days all the ‘IBS’ symptoms had gone.
We don’t cook avocado do we.
Any insect that lays eggs in the avocado then uses humans as the ‘vector’ for the eggs survival.
This, I think, is the cause of symptoms of IBS in some humans.
I posted this reply in the comments section of another IBS video.
I believe that some IBS type practitioners might know that IBS symptoms may be attributed to intestinal parasites, but that information is not forthcoming to any who are suffering this condition.
I think this is a bit far fetched, I doubt many insects eggs will survive the human bowel, except tape worms and such.
@@oneone8318
When I said ‘long story short’ I meant it.
I tried all the ‘remedies’ that I could find on U tube IBS videos.
It was a slow dawning for me to realise that parasites are in food that comes from a tree.
And it was a very big step for me to ingest an animal wormer.
But I realised that humans are also animals (as far as fenbendazole is concerned).
12 days to achieve a fix, after 10 weeks of, shall I say, discomfort.
I drive for a living.
It was very discomforting to have to sit on a toilet 4 to 5 times in an 8 hour shift.
Fenben fixed me up.
And I bet that there are many ‘IBS’ sufferers out there that would benefit from trying this remedy.
Kind regards, Ian Jones.
Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.
@@oneone8318
I had a two month long episode from eating avocado that was not fresh. Could be some type of parasite or food poisoning germ. There are one cell organism parasites such as giardia that are sensitive to Fenbendazole. I suggest no one eats avocado that is starting to spoil turn grey or dark spots. My grandmother had the similar experience from eating avocado with brown spots inside so make sure they're fresh before you eat them.
@@ianjones7740 Could just as well be the insectiside used in your avocadoes. or any other food you ate. I mean ofc could also be the avocadoes, but maybe probably not the "parasites" if there are even any.
Also pain in the kidneys as a result of having to pee all the time.
*Vomiting* is NOT a symptom of IBS. If you have recurrent vomiting please get checked for gastroparesis Intestinal pseudo-obstruction may also be worth getting evaluated for.
