Olivia, you were my favorite host in Scishow's entirety. Now... you have become more of a person on top of having a greater presence, I'm always so sad that you don't host as often as everyone else. Taxidermy is something that I find really interesting, so seeing you break this down is amazing @.@
Olivia Gordon won 10000000 points in my book. As a hunter and a conservationist-minded individual, taxidermy is a great art. A dying art as well and a great way to honor the follow. As a hunter, i do not take a life careless or thoughtlessly. I try to see the animal is respected and fully utilized in every aspect. Meat is used for food or donated to Hunt for the Hungry organization. Bone is typically ground for meal or soil use. And as taxidermy enthusiast, I like to see the animals life honored and I think there is no greater way than preserving there hide. I know my viewpoints not for everyone, but kudos to Olivia for doing what she is doing. It’s a great art.
Mindless Focus idk dude, If some aliens came down and started hunting us, is at least hope to have my body returned to earth rather than stuffed on a creepy manakin and posed, lmao
I can't see keeping this type of art in one's home but it is a very important aspect of lifelike museum displays. In particular, I'm thinking of all the bird species which have gone extinct in the last one hundred years. So many of them have been preserved through taxidermy and are on display in museums. I feel that these specimens are crucial reminders to the public of what has been lost forever.
I like how Olivia dresses on the talk show much better. And I know now how much effort she puts into making that persona when doing the regular SciShow. But then, I'm also amazed how "natural" Hank is.
As odd as it might seem, taxidermy is a fascinating form of art. I'm always impressed by people who can make lifelike mounts. Good luck Olivia, and if you make a channel about your journey into taxidermy, I'd be interested in seeing some more in depth videos.
My brother does it; you really need to know your physiology, or at least be VERY familiar with the animal(s) you commonly will mount, to do it well. He's done a couple that look like, if you turned your back on them, they would flip around and ram you.
Olivia seems so much more relaxed in this episode than in ones that she is by herself talking to the camera, it's nice to see "the real her" in a sense
So in this episode we go from a squirrel that is bereft of life. That rests in peace. That's pushing up the daisies. You have an ex-squirrel. And then you have a very alive parrot. I guess there's no returning that one for a slug. ;)
I've always been fascinated with taxidermy (my grandma has deer heads in her living room) and I hope to one day learn it as a hobby. It's a really great teaching tool. For example, I own one piece which is a newborn fawn. Everyone that sees it is amazed at how small a baby deer is and how soft they are. You would never be able to touch or closely look at a newborn deer in the wild, but with taxidermy you can see one up close. It gives a chance to look at all kinds of animals you might not see everyday.
How Taxidermy works was something I always wanted to know in the back of my mind, and even if it has been just a few clicks away to actually learn that, I thank you for doing this Scishow talk! Thanks Olivia!
The more I learn about taxidermy the more I am fascinated by it. I never understood how all of it worked or appreciated the difficulty, but it really is such an art form. Good info!
I love how different Olivia is in this video than in the normal videos. She seems so chill, relaxed, and well...normal lol when not reciting news like topics. I did a horrible job at saying what I was trying to say lol it's been a long day...
Thanks so so much, you guys are such a powerful influence. Thanks for spreading the love !!!!!!! Yay Olivia so nice to hang isn’t your fox stunning Love you scishow
If you liked this bit on taxidermy check out the channel thebrainscoop! Emily has some really cool videos on the subject. I first learned about her from Hank and she's so great!
I have a relative who is a taxidermist. It is fascinating. His house is a bit scary with many deer heads staring at you. They are waiting for clients to pick them up. Going to the bathroom in the middle of the night is not for the faint of heart. lol
WOW! That Fox is freaking awesome! That's an excellent work! Also the duck! I want to see how the squirrels get when Olivia gets home! Just one night for all of them doesn't make justice. Really that Fox looks alive!
The Fox is really great because it looks so serious. Quite amazing if you think about just having some loose fur and clay to create a facial expression.
Thank you for warning us about taxidermy images instead of just cutting them out altogether, there's a lot of that going around! (censorship, not necessarily taxidermy...)
I feel like Hank had a hard episode. Taxidermy seems like something that makes him squeamish and he said that the parrot beak made him nervous. What a great, host, though!! Good job, Hank, you didn't poop your pants!
Olivia, I super want the taxidermy squirrel salt and pepper shaker from Scrubs but it isn't online anywhere. How much do I have to pay to have you craft one for me?
One of the weirdest, nicest and potentially dangerous thing I have experienced (maybe not dangerous dangerous, but "getting a fingernail ripped off" dangerous) was having a parrot play with my finger. They run their (very dry) tongue around and will slowly maneuver the beak around so they can try to pop a fingernail off (inserting the lower beak under the nail and pushing against the upper, much like they do to open sunflower seeds). You gotta move your finger around to keep them from getting good purchase, or else.
I always thought Olivia reminded me of Daria with how soft spoken and monotone her voice is... her being a, now professional, taxidermist kinda seals that for me.
Newton's Third Law she’s not flailing about (actually neither is Hank) which seems to be a prerequisite for SciShow hosts. I prefer a more natural conversational style. When will SciShow realise their content is interesting without the flailing or artificial dramatic vocal gymnastics.
Because she's actually in her element. And I don't think people know how hard it is to read from a teleprompter. It makes everything you say seem unnatural unless you are an elite pro at it. Or your name is Ron Burgandy.
People should watch the original Olivia video about her interest in entomology to see that she's a lot more natural. It's just the fact that she has to read from a teleprompter that makes her seem off.
That was uncomfortable for the hosts, it seemed. But very interesting to watch. I had to attempt to taxidermy a goose once for a vertebrate zoology class. It went about as well as you'd expect.
About parrots being social and living in couples, it's very true. Where I live there are a few flocks that fly around and that's really easy to spot them from the ruckus. When you see a flock flying around it's quite easy to spot the couples, as they fly closer together than the average distance between pairs. Often you can see a triplet: mom, dad and their offspring (one at a time). The third looks as big and developed as the parents, and it is just 'learning the ropes' until it too finds a mate.
My uncle was an avid hunter and had a taxidermy bear in his den. It really disturbed me when I was younger, probably the combination of death & giant predator in an unnatural environment. However, I always enjoyed going to some local museums and looking at the taxidermy specimens from native species. I don't understand why people hunt, but I appreciate the use of the animal as a tool for education. It also kind of amused me how similar taxidermy is to various kinds of crafts... particularly making plush toys lol.
Also, your parrot plays dead better than my dog. I do finger guns at her and she sort of lays diagonally before jumping back up, like "'It's just a flesh wound"
Cool to see you doing what you actually do so to speak :P And a host as a guest! And what a craft! :D Also - there's GOT to be a way to put googly eyes directly in the eye sockets :D
12:33 Have you taxidermied fish? I've heard that they're super hard because not only do they have very thin skin, but they also lose most of their color after they die, so you actually have to PAINT them, which is a big part of why it's so freaking expensive.
Mizuto Ryu It may be useful in museums, to show people some scarce animals, hard to spot or dangerous in nature, or hard to breed in captivity. In a museum I visited, there was a sunfish, a gorilla, a Siberian tiger, large turtles, delicate hummingbirds. No other way to know them almost in the flesh.
Mizuto Ryu Well, tell you what. Unfortunately pretty recently the last Male Northen Rhino died in captivity. He was the last male of his kind and he had to be put down. Now, you can have Photos, files, videos to document his existence but I think taxidermy is a better way to show what a special animal it was. A museum is probably his place to be from now on and even If it is a gruesome form of art it is still respectful and can recreate the illusion of life in a Memory from the past! My boyfriend's grandpa used to work in a museum and he knew the life stories and names of each animal that died in the near Zoo and was donated and mounted in the museum.
Well, it won’t be long till you can just custom print a suitable form for the skin on one of them fancy 3D home printers, I would imagine. Really enjoyed this episode, very interesting! Edit: although there is a limitation to size, of course.
Is it weird to say that she seems exactly the type of person who would complete taxidermy school? Not in a bad way, but just, "Huh... Yeah that fits" way.
Great job Olivia! Let me know if you want some more raw pelts. Im trapping raccoons, opossums, coyotes, etc on my property and hate to see anything go to waste.
From my experience with bird taxidermy -- Some bird species, cold weather birds in particular, are made *entirely* out of feathers. There's no bird inside at all. Which is another reason bird taxidermy is difficult.
Olivia is FULL OF SURPRISES! Always one of my favorites. She's good value :-)
Olivia sounds like someone really cool to hang out with and learn from.
She is also pretty. So there's that.
Olivia, you were my favorite host in Scishow's entirety. Now... you have become more of a person on top of having a greater presence, I'm always so sad that you don't host as often as everyone else. Taxidermy is something that I find really interesting, so seeing you break this down is amazing @.@

Great Job Olivia! Its always cool seeing people sharing their hobbies. This is really neat.

The Great auk comes to mind. Best next thing to having the the live animal.
Olivia is looking at that parrot and thinking: "You'd look good on my mantel piece birdy..."
I love watching Olivia's episodes and would really like to see more about taxidermy and Jessi is just awesome.
I like how Olivia dresses on the talk show much better. And I know now how much effort she puts into making that persona when doing the regular SciShow. But then, I'm also amazed how "natural" Hank is.
One of the best SciShow talk show VLOGs I've seen. What other talents are your staff hiding? Love the VLOGs.

Nice work, Olivia. Also nice to get to know her a bit better.
I'm suddenly more impressed by Olivia

I usually skip SciShow Talk Show episodes. This is a must-watch! Go Olivia!

not that it matters but digging olivias look this episode
How Taxidermy works was something I always wanted to know in the back of my mind, and even if it has been just a few clicks away to actually learn that, I thank you for doing this Scishow talk! Thanks Olivia!
My goodness, Hank's expression after 6:14 is priceless and exactly the same face I would make.
Olivia Gordon is who I aspire to be.
I wonder if Emily Graslie and Olivia ever met each other.
The more I learn about taxidermy the more I am fascinated by it. I never understood how all of it worked or appreciated the difficulty, but it really is such an art form. Good info!
What fun in this video! When a bird laughs like we do, I can't help but laugh, too funny.
Smart chicks rock.
I'm surprised emily didn't show up
It didn't have brains on it. Not worth it xD
I really like this side of Olivia.
I never would've pegged Olivia for a taxidermist.
what do you peg people for?
I thought I would find the taxidermy part creepy but it was really interesting :-D
Oh my gosh! That bird is _adorable!_
I once had a coworker who told me about a fellow _he_ once knew he had a parrot who knew words in _Spanish._
Oliva playing with dead things! Loving this.
Olivia....a taxidermist? Who would have ever known.. Very interesting...Thanks Olivia....
taxidermy is true art, thank you for showcasing it. well done Olivia.
I love how different Olivia is in this video than in the normal videos.
She seems so chill, relaxed, and well...normal lol when not reciting news like topics.
I did a horrible job at saying what I was trying to say lol it's been a long day...
The interaction between Zoe and Lori is great. Lori clearly has a lot of love for Zoe and it's wonderful.
Thanks so so much, you guys are such a powerful influence. Thanks for spreading the love !!!!!!!
Yay Olivia so nice to hang isn’t your fox stunning
Love you scishow
Love the bird! You really can see how smart they are.

Taxidermy looks about as fun and interesting as embalming . Might have to give it a go sometime.Great episode.☺
Really enjoyed Olivia and the taxidermy class. Very informative.
WOW! That Fox is freaking awesome! That's an excellent work! Also the duck!
I want to see how the squirrels get when Olivia gets home! Just one night for all of them doesn't make justice.
Really that Fox looks alive!
Please do a full video with Olivia showing how it's done, with all details kept.
I like Olivia.
The Fox is really great because it looks so serious. Quite amazing if you think about just having some loose fur and clay to create a facial expression.
Thank you for warning us about taxidermy images instead of just cutting them out altogether, there's a lot of that going around! (censorship, not necessarily taxidermy...)
One of my favorite episodes that got me into the scishow talk shows.
The look the parrot gave when they were talking about taxidermy and doing it to birds
I like this talkshow format!
I feel like Hank had a hard episode. Taxidermy seems like something that makes him squeamish and he said that the parrot beak made him nervous. What a great, host, though!! Good job, Hank, you didn't poop your pants!
Can Olivia's animals please, please, please stay in the background? They are so cute!
Taxidermy a squirrel can't bring in much $$$. I think deer would bring more money. Good luck Olivia.
I love how her voice sounds during normal conversation
Olivia, I super want the taxidermy squirrel salt and pepper shaker from Scrubs but it isn't online anywhere. How much do I have to pay to have you craft one for me?
8:18 girl voice to demon real quick
I am feeling a mixture of discomfort and amazement.
Great episode. I'm just glad I wasn't sipping on my coffee when Hank came out with "So this is a one night squirrel."
At first I was surprised but then It kind of made sense with Olivia's character

Thank you for that fact. I now have more ammunition against my friend who has a crazy irrational fear of losing fingernails :p
Y'know, it's cool to see people are using the comment section to full effect. Sharing stories and connecting.
WHAT.THE. I have been told to avoid wearing zippers and/or clothes with buttons, as they love to pop them off, but this is a new one!
Damn, her voice is soothing. I could listen to that tell me anything and I'd enjoy it.
As if we couldn't love Olivia more. She like taxidermy!
This is my favourite scishow episode! I love taxidermy and birds lol

My dog loves the sounds Zoe is making.
literally crushing on Olivia so hard rn
We've got flocks of those parrots in my home town.
is that the death star trench graphic from the targeting computer in the background?
Zoe is so awesome! What an amazing bird!

love how olivia looks so intently at jessi when she talks.. me too olivia.. me too...
The parrot grabbing the nut with his foot
The struggle is real
19:55 Apparently, she can mimic Jessi's laugh, really well.
Could we get an Olivia Gordon/Emily Graslie cross-over. That would be amazing.
Yes! *YES!*
if it were possible I wish they had kids together ;-)
Is taxidermy still useful in research with the current recording technology and DNA testing?

Excellent episode, especially the second half!
_It has brains on it..._
This is so cool! 👍
Olivia: "made it from, the printer."
Hank: ~head in hands~ "it's beautiful."
Olivia just got way cooler to me and I already liked her.

5:01 Hank hasn't been playing enough Dwarf Fortress.
