He's a cool guy. His tips are always valid. Over-processing is the reason why I don't use templates in my DAW. I prefer to build the processing as I mix.
I really like this interview guy, in almost every video he ends up asking a really helpful question regarding the answer he just got. Most of those happen to be questions i would ask myself if i was there with CLA
again not much for the folks that have been engineering for 10+ years, but this is undoubtedly one of the biggest mistakes I'd make early on mixing with my eyes and doing stuff without a real reason..thanks again Waves and Chris
I'm so glad I stumbled upon Waves CLA plugins. It really helped me get a great sound in home recording. Thank you !!! The only other plugins I use is Izotope which I love too. I just keep it simple.
The best tip I heard in my life, mix with your ears not with your eyes. Everybody talks about DB levels and all that crap, yes it is important. But sometimes you do not need to process an 808 that sounds solid already, you are just going to fuck it up. Lol. Cheers!
RUclips, thanks for the recommendation on this video. I can't afford to get into compression, as there are a good 20 of them that come so highly recommended, often comparable in price to a car or home. So I roll uncompressed. But translation to RUclips can be tricky, mostly due to playback systems including shotty TV speakers, EQs pushed in the car, where I hear things that need serious help. My uploads are embarrassing, but some days I compliment myself for the effort. At least I try. Ribbon microphones, also expensive, and room microphones I think is where I will go next, close miking boxes me in. Fingers crossed on the AEA mics and pres. Stay tuned.
Every daw comes with at least a handful of compressors my friend. Lol you dont need Waves plugs to get great mixes. And even those are on sale for $29 often. Lol
Well, you can use the compressor as a tool to "colorize" sound, so don't use a high ratio, just use a soft compression and hear the color of the sound. If it's good, it's good.
Thank you sir. Finally some sanity. I agree. I know engineers who compress everything. I know one guy who routinely inserts a multi-band compressor on a kick. It's getting crazy out there! Thank you sir for your wisdom.
He does everything during tracking IF he feels confident enough to do it. So you must keep in mind that you can't "unsaturate", you can't "undistort". Probably saturation is the last thing you should touch during tracking, but if you know you need it and you're sure it'll work - go for it. I saw his tracking session on a Neve and he was pushing pretty much everything to 0 on the VU meters apart from hats and rides. During his mixing he saturates literally everything, because he mixes on an analog SSL with lots of outboard and pushes it to the reds. SSL4000 tend to distort a lot when pushed into the reds.
I’ve watched a lot (and I mean...a LOT) of Pro music producers/engineers tutorial vids. CLA, Dave Pensado, Warren Huart, Andy Scheps, etc, etc, etc. - and the thing that keeps standing out beyond techniques, DAW manipulation, plugin skills, etc....IS THE WAY THEY LISTEN. I’m trying to develop more what they’ve got in recognizing frequencies, and it just takes time. For example: utilizing iZotope’s Tonal Balance plug is a good visual detector, but I try not to let such methods override the listening ear. The end of the vid said it well: “EnginEAR” - not EnginEYE”.
I draw the volume levels piece by piece, before compressing. Then again, I've got the 20 minutes to do it. As CLA says, & that wisdom comes from the horrid old days prior to DAWs, I used to intern in a Seattle Studio, those cats would know what anyone's material was going to sound anywhere, just by having a cup of coffee & listening to the tune. At whatever stage, that would happen as a sudden drill. Even for me, nightmarishly & feverishly cutting & splicing tape.
He's mixed bands since before I was born and didn't look in that bad of shape. Just worried about him, not trying to be disrespectful. I love the guy and hate to see him struggling for breath between words.
TheSonicSolution sometimes medications and procedures like steroid therapy to increase strength in bad backs, etc, force the weight gain. I don't know anything about CLA, but I like him and agree w/your sentiment.
i have 45 vocal channels (because i recorded te vocals without metronome, i had to divide word by word, every word has got one channels, upssss) so i am handling to add waves plugins all of them one by one, it is messed up, help
...well, I put some main guitars with distortion (not metal distortion) thru an API 2500 and they gained weight and punch ...not volume...punch. Which was exactly why I used that compressor in particular.
MorbidManMusic; Axes will get crushed anyways bussing & summing the mix out anyways. The only gtr compression I prefer, is a orange stomp box before the gtr amp preamp. Gotcha more pull of lively gtrs instead of squashed zombies.
he told in one video that sidechaining is totally artistic thing not that much of a mixing thing, but when to apply it ? I say, when it sits well to the energy of the song and it creates goove... I use it especially when I want a solid punch from kick drum.
@A Royalz I like to put a multi-band compressor (ex. mcDsp AE400) on a bass track, then side-chain it with the kick drum so the kick drum triggers the compressor to duck frequencies around 50Hz and also somewhere between 7-10kHz on the bass so the kick can punch through the mix just a little bit more.
focus on what it does, the functionality of it in theory, then aplly wherever and whenever you think it will work good... kick, snar, bass, oh, fx, ducking... or just play with it... send mono to mid and stereo to side and sidechain the 2, add it to a music track in a movie and make the dialog tracks more obvious, make gated reverb on a snare... just be entertained:)
A Royalz It's to ensure that the kick is always the most prominent track in the mix (if you're talking house/techno). The bass line can stop it from achieving this prominence, so if you side chain the kick to it, when the kick and bass both hit at the same time, the bass gets out of the way (ducks) a little bit so the kick remains consistent and is always the prominent sound in the mix. Plenty of tutorials on RUclips showing you how it's done, it's not always necessary, depends on the mix and the track and what you're attempting to do. Can be used as a pumping effect as well, that's more of a creative choice about how you want the whole track to sound.
I knew Chris when I was a staff-songwriter at H&L Records back in the 70s and he was an assistant engineer. Good guy.
He's a cool guy. His tips are always valid. Over-processing is the reason why I don't use templates in my DAW. I prefer to build the processing as I mix.
the best quote ever been said at @ 2:14 "you're not watching TV here you're making music you're creating art you're creating a sound experience

Mixing individual parts with closed eyes is actually a great technique. Concentrate on the sound: feel it's color and timbre, don't watch it roll-by.

He just gives all the most important things that he have. Thank you Chris! We love you!
holy crap, even his voice is over compressed lol
Lol i know i just go half on volume and the voice is loud
lmao
:DDDDD
lmao
and there's also a hint of parallel eq)

Cla plug ins cover everything you'll ever need...crazy...👍...Thanks for sharing
he is one of my top engineer & mentor C.L.A.👊

I will have to try this approach. I'm excited to see it in action.
Thank you so much for this , a subscription was deserved !
I really needed this!
True Master,true artist,true engineer
Being a master is to master the basics.
I think CLA can do those hollywood trailer voiceovers
Thank you for these words of wisdom Chris ! Don't EnginEYE , EnginEAR ! Nice one :D
Would love to hear his thoughts on saturation during recording/ mixing

the tips are mindblowing! super useful and practical! tnx =)

No bs straight to the point how good!!

I get the complaint about compressing distorted guitars. But truth is, on guitar solos it can help.
the sound engineer who taught me how to mix, once said compress it like you don't hear it's compressed.
I've often heard similar advice..."if you can hear the effect, it might be too much..."
Thanks for sharing, Jobim.
Thanks for the tips!
"You´re not watching TV here!" :))))
Man, Chris sure has put on some weight. Come on, Chris...we need you around for a long time, buddy.
He's mixed bands since before I was born and didn't look in that bad of shape. Just worried about him, not trying to be disrespectful. I love the guy and hate to see him struggling for breath between words.
can't beat that little bit of exercise. an elliptical is amazing, handy and almost silent in use. everyone should have one.

Is he a smoker?
@bluesovietmoose And can afford a better lifestyle because of it!
really useful thanks
I liked !!
legendary
Solid
that was so freaking good. yes I will use that statement for the rest of my life. don't engine eye. ingine ear!!!!!
i have 45 vocal channels (because i recorded te vocals without metronome, i had to divide word by word, every word has got one channels, upssss) so i am handling to add waves plugins all of them one by one, it is messed up, help
Create a BUS for vocals, send all channels to that, then add plugins etc to the BUS Channel
Wow.
Start over and do it right. You’re welcome. 👊🏻
create a bus or edit them into a single channel you can process or render the edited version.
@@rockboy360 thank you
A distorted guitar. You know why it's distorted? It's compressed. You know how much dynamics it has? Zero.
more like overloaded to the max with limiter added

CLA очень крутой тип-он миксовал альбом Лепса !!!)
алексей петров да ладно? Правда? Какой альбом?
Инфа 100 процентов, альбом точно не скажу )
It is funny how simple it really is
Engine-ear
can you tell us about sidechaining?what is the right time to apply it?
he told in one video that sidechaining is totally artistic thing not that much of a mixing thing, but when to apply it ? I say, when it sits well to the energy of the song and it creates goove...

so kick drum and bass ?right? for pump up the bass ?

Damn look at that gut!!!!!
Lol!! Looks like the music industry has been good to his grocery budget.
Needs some compression
He knows his stuff for sure !! BUT !!! He really needs to do the " PUSH AWAY " As in PUSH AWAY from the dinner TABLE !!
don't engineeye, engineear! :'D:'D:'D
DONT ENGIN-EYE
ENGIN-EAR!!!!
It's a girl!
I thought the same thing ...lol
you're a boy
Ok????
...gulity....I'll try to do better..
you guys act like we are idiots.
So many youtube commenters are.
Let's see every teenage "producer" with FL Studio on a laptop prove them wrong.
Is he having a baby ?
