Hey Mike. I’m helping my grandparents in repairing some brick walls in their old basement that basically adds to the foundation of the whole house. The bricks are loose and the mortar is now mostly dirt and dust. A few bricks are wobbly but not all. I want to basically do a cover up of all the bricks with s mortar to like you say, “hide all the sins”. My question is, should I completely remove the few bricks that are wobbly and reset them before going over them?? Or should I scrape some off the old mortar down and then go over the joints. But like I said all the mortar that were holding the bricks turned to dust. A good portion of the bricks is wobbly to where when I was taking out the old stuff like a dentist, a few fell out even. Get back to me if you can with any advice. Really thankful I came across your channel by the way a few months ago. Your videos sure do help a young apprentice like me here in NYC. I take great interest in learning the old school methods and the fruits of a dying trade. Thanks.

I live in a two family house up in the northeast. I had a physically disabled woman who was living in the first floor and I use to dump a load of ice melt on the red brick front stairs so she wouldn't take a fall. But over a few years the ice melt destroyed the mortar. I'm in the process of rebuilding the steps at the moment (damn rain and thunderstorms are slowing me down) and I'm using rapid set mortar so that the new tenants can use the steps again soon. Luckily I have a lot of extra brick stashed away which I got from the original mason who built the stairs over thirty years ago and so I'll be able to match it with the other brick. I hope the rapid set mortar will last a while. Next time I'm going to use stone slabs like shown here in the video.

I have a shared stoop with neighbor he ripped his out built the most ridiculous stairs I’ve ever seen it would make you sick but it’s open underneath… so my stoop has now been open on one side and it’s less than 6 months and it’s falling apart…. I’m a carpenter so I’m pretty good with hands but no brick layer … even if I did repair myself how should I shore up one side with neighbors stoop right there? Maybe rip out everything and make a wall first?

I agree with Grindahz, before wasting a professionals time it would be useful to have a ballpark estimate (especially on a well defined/completed job). Very good video btw. You said you only used the rapid set masonry because it was going to rain. They happen have it at my local hardware store, so I don't know if I should get that or regular masonry to set the step bricks. Is there any problem that might occur using the rapid set masonry. Or anything that needs to be done different - aside from getting it done quicker.

You are right about the rowlock brick steps, they are always lose and falling apart, i am no mason but do repairs, what a great idea you to use that flat stone on steps, this might be in my range, but those rowlock steps, if someone asks me to fix, i run from those jobs. Nice video, and good advice, thank you again.

mike- I did the same repair on my stoop. Being an amateur- I concentrated very much on keeping level bricks , nice joints, and the height of the steps. But- not so much on keeping the brick faces clean from excess mortar. I see now from this video that I could have used a little water and a sponge that same day. But now that the mortar hardened- what can I do to clean the bricks?
