Suzuki Swift Sport 1.4T Auto Test Review

  • We very recently had the latest generation Swift Sport on test and I loved the little car with it's slick and quick 6 speed manual gearbox. Those that know me and follow my tests will also know my preference for automatic transmissions, especially if the car is mainly used for city driving and commuting.
The current Swift Sport is the first to be offered with an automatic option, so naturally, I had to test this for myself.
Essentially, the 2 variants are identical except for the transmission so I am not going to repeat all the aspects of the car. Please use this link to compare: • Suzuki Swift 1.4T Spor...
The standard torque converter 6 speed automatic is extremely smooth in general driving and makes shifts felt with a slight sporty kick when being rushed, adding to the overall sporty feel. There are paddles on the steering wheel for manual shifting. As always, I find these completely obsolete in normal driving. However, if you are wanting to push on through some bends or over a mountain pass then these are a great addition to the fun factor.
At the launch of the Sport last year, I took an automatic around Red Star Raceway using the paddles and this provided some very smooth and quick laps of the track. This was really a case of the car being in it's element.
Equipped with the same lower and tighter suspension as the manual version, the car handles superbly when you want to push it a bit through bends and when pushing on. Typically of cars that are built for sporty driving though, the ride can be a touch hard when pottering around town.
One disappointment with this test was the fuel consumption. After a week of driving in all conditions and maybe a bit of playing, the reading of 7.9L/ 100km felt a little bit high. This is especially in contrast to the superb economy that all Suzuki's usually achieve. The manual Sport achieved 6.3.
    The car is currently priced at R347 900. This includes a 4 year/ 60 000km service plan plus a 5 year/ 200 000km warranty.

Did it lose Performance with the auto box? Is it noticeably slower? Were the shifts from the transmission sporty? Did it downshift well?

Hi Kevin, I don't do actual performance tests but I did drive both manual and auto on track at the media launch. I didn't find the auto noticeably slower at all. The shifts depend on how you are driving, in traffic they are smooth but can be quite snappy if you are pushing on. The same applies to downshifts. At the end of the day it all comes down to your preferences and where you will spend most of your driving time.

Look up urban driving on Suzuki specs and your fuel economy is correct with Suzuki’s quote , they quote 7.9 litres / 100km , you saying you got into the throttle should have made it higher unless you mixed up some of your driving with highway , either way that economy is correct , do some light freeway driving with no weight and no air con and you should get 5.0 l per 100

If you drive it more gently you can easy get a fuel consumption of 5,0 - 5,6 litres every 100 km in the city!

Problem is that the Sport doesn't want to be driven gently
