Tom I have been looking everywhere trying to find where the setting is that shows the width of columns in Calc as you are moving them. I just did a reinstall to fix another problem. Now my Calc no longer shows that. I use some spreadsheets over and over in my budgets. I use the same widths over and over. Do you know where to do this? Thanks

do a video on how to set up a complete budget spreadsheet. do you use forms? sounded like you had a complex set-up. databases? that would be a good tutorial for beginners.

I'll see what I can do. I do not use any databasing, just a spreadsheet.

What would be awesome is using a Basic script (or a python script) INSIDE LO, so not using any 'third party' programs etc) to read the serial port and dump data live into the sheet. I can do this with Excel (which I am really trying hard to leave) but am really struggling to do it in LO, Forcing me back to MS.

I've tried OnlyOffice and I think it looks nice. I like being able to tab between the document, spreadsheet, and presentation files. The one thing that I didn't like about it was its spell check feature. You have to right click on the necessary word that is misspelled to activate the menu and then select a correct spelling from a short list. This must be done to all misspelled words. It can become very tedious if you have a very long document. They need to add a spell check button that will speed up the process.

Fortunately, that is true but still new I hope its improve

I hope they will add a spell check button to OnlyOffice in the near future. Softmaker FreeOffice 2016 is a decent alternative to MS Office too (www.freeoffice.com/en/discover/freeoffice-windows-linux). Softmaker allows you to download additional dictionaries to extend the power of its spell checker. WPS Office is another alternative too. It looks like MS Office 2007. I like the look of OnlyOffice the best. I am glad we have choices.

I want to like libreoffice, but it's difficult after using MS office forever and only switched completely to linux last year. I'll never understand why Libreoffice takes longer to boot than my whole OS does, something I've read other users complain about too.
It seems really buggy too, although maybe I'm just using it wrong. When I was on Debian on an HDD a few months ago and so had very old versions of everything, opening the "format cells" dialog took over 30 seconds, but that seems OK on my up-to-date antergos on an SSD. Now though, I can't format multiple cells from the sidebar (I'm not sure you're supposed to be able to but it seems logical that it should work like that). I select multiple cells, set formatting to currency or whatever and it doesn't change. It works if I only have 1 cell selected. But then if I change format on a given cell a few times, it starts showing just the equation for the cell no matter what format I select. That was with an unsaved document, so it won't be a .xlsx compatibility thing.
I've got office 07 working in Wine, it's about equally as buggy.

That is interesting. I use LibreOffice on my Mac and all my Linux distros and have not encountered those issues. If you still have a buggy version, can you indicate your versions and distro? I am curious if it is a widespread issue.

I'm using up to date antergos, and libreoffice-fresh 5.3.0-2 package from the "extra" repository. I don't think I've updated libreoffice since I saw those bugs last week but I may have. Now that I look at version numbers, I wonder if going to libreoffice-still 5.2.6-1 would help. I think one is stable, one is testing

OK I've switched to the "still" branch and I can't immediately replicate those bugs. The real test will be whether they creep back in after an hour of proper work.

LO 4.3 and 5.0 are considered stable. I'm using 4.3 here on Debian 8.7 and it runs free of bugs. Maybe you could try it out.

Spreadsheet is one of my two main tools as a mechanical engineer :) Forget fancy FEM and CAD. Being without spreadsheet is like being without a hand :)

LibreOffice is one of the strongest selling points for switching to Linux. Yes, it also runs on Windows, but it makes one libre to switch. And as this vid makes clear, its applications are essentially as powerful as MS Office.

    • @SwitchedtoLinux
      @SwitchedtoLinux  7 лет назад

Yep. I run it on my Mac because I only have Windows copies of Office. If my current copy of office were rendered unless I would just use Libre on Windows, too.

In a certain way it is more powerful. The vast majority of people use only 10% of all the functionalities of Excel. For those who have an intensive use of macros and of VBA for Excel, you can do the same in LibreOffice with scripts. The big advantage of LibreOffice is that you have 4 languages to choose from: Libre Basic, BeanShell, JavaScript or Python. If you choose the last one you have access to C, C++, Perl, Java, PHP and the like because Python can include them. And Python is extremely powerful. By the way NASA uses Python !!!
      Best regards,
      Serge

Python has been taking the IT world by storm. Been thinking about getting back into programming with Python. Unfortunately, real life does not cooperate: so many goodies, so little time. Sigh!
