Love your videos.❤️ Greetings from İstanbul. 💕
Thankyou! Your teaching is wonderful.
It is formidable to see people your age passing on knowledge on RUclips. I may be 34 years old and from another country, but I love you.
I’m not even learning English, but I clicked because the video starred this cute-looking lady. How sweet she is! To even include 3 books written by male authors, and 3 by female authors. Thank you for the video, Gill, and wishing everyone happy-reading! ❤️
But why did she include as many as 5 books by English writers? Only one American; no Scottish, Canadian, Indian or Australian authors.
And why didn't she include literature older than 19th century?
Definitely, Ms Gill does not care about equality enough.
@@kerbicz Well, it is her personal decision. Take it or leave it! Do not even try to begin any culture war here!
@@jankucera8180 Simply hilarious! Three weeks ago I posted a mildly sarcastic joke to an old vlog and forgot about it after three days. Now, all of the sudden, someone reminds me of my post and warns "not to start a war".
Looks rather like you are trying to start a war, Mr Kucera, but I'm not interested.
@@kerbicz No, I am not... But I saw this quite often recently... and was ready to defend wonderful Ms Gill against an attack of this sort.
i read 1984 some years before and it left some fear on me for long time .if you live in dictatorship countries. you afraid of your own shadow .
I love your accuracy in pronauciation. I can listen you for hours. Thanks God that we have got you here. 🙏

I'm reading Pride and Prejudice right now. It's complicated but interesting and it really enriches my vocabulary and shows grammar structures like inversion or conditionals.
It was the same for me! I read it several times and I think it really has beautiful language worth remembering. Austen is such a nuanced writer
I like "Emma" more than Pride and Prejudice".
I got a headache reading it, maybe not for my capacity. Couldn't even finish 1 page
@@KimAhrina11I’d say give it a second chance. The style becomes easier after you’ve become used to it
me too,im reading it now
'1984'is a great book. It is so relevant nowadays.
EXACTLY !!!
I'm afraid, Dmitriy, thst's what we understand here in Ukraine, but not in the countries enjoying the peace 💙💛
To be honest I couldn’t get a long with it
@Eliot Ness My dear Eliot)) It's really kind of you to let me know that I, as a citizen of Ukraine, being 44 years of age, with a PhD in the stylistics of the English language, am so easily fooled by propaganda in my native country. 🤣 The propaganda has very few chances to get into my household and my mind, fortunately, as I don't watch TV, prefering international online media)) 💙💛 I still love my country and my people ☺ and the agressors are Ruzzia 😜 don't forget about it
@@user-wx3vr2wr1l It might be because you are not very familiar with the historical period, when it was written. If you learn more about totalitarism and dictatorship in 20th century Europe, you might understand it better.
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and novels by Somerset Maugham and O'Henry are particularly good to start one's personal journey into the amazing English literature.
Dorian Grey - so-so. I didn’t like Rebecca and other her books. I don’t like O’Henry. I think his books are for kids. 🤣
Dorian is narcissist and promiscuous, don’t recommend for people with high moral standards
yeeee my favorite writer is Daphne du Maurier
@@KatyEnglish. our school made us cram Rebecca back in 6th grade 💀💀
I would also recommend The Importance of Being Earnest, De Profundis by Oscar Wilde
George Orwell is my favourite author. Everything he wrote is a masterpiece!
Her pronunciation is the most accurate and aesthetic one I have ever heard. I'm amazed and wish I had an English teacher in my preperation year with her voice and pronunciation.❤
How are you praising the quality of her expression while simultaneously using "aesthetic" as a standalone descriptor?
@@TPF00TI'm not a native speaker. I admit that my English is far from perfect, and thus; I'm just asking out of curiosity. What is wrong with "the most accurate and aesthetic one"?
@@eylul7143 Your English is better than most native speakers so I hope you weren't offended. An aesthetic is a set of "rules" that can be used to classify a visual. For example, your living room can have a dark aesthetic, a bright aesthetic, or even a natural aesthetic. You can also use it as an adjective (eg. "Her hairstyle is aesthetically pleasing"), but notice how the word does not mean "beautiful" on its own. You are merely describing how you find the aesthetic that her hair is incorporating pleasing, and you therefore also find her hair pleasing to look at.
I forgot to mention that it doesn't only apply to visuals. Your original sentence is perfectly valid if you added one word:
Her pronunciation is the most accurate and aesthetically pleasing I have ever heard.
Personally, I would describe it as an elegant and pleasant manner of speaking.
@@TPF00T well that definition of word is not proper. It refers to beautiful visual or sound e.t.c. Aesthetic is frequently used an adjective to describe beauty of sth. So just utilitizing it, for meaning sth is very beautiful would be enough.
My friend has bought an aesthetic car!
.
Even a non-English speaker would be able to understand this lady. Lovely & relaxing type of voice with a typical British accent, perfect to get you started. Plenty to learn from her (intelligence).
George Orwell 's Animal farm is still a memorable novel from my student age,, it's a satirical story,,,
Me too! Good for students nowadays too.
We had this novel in graduation, i truly loved it.
I already read Pride and prejudice, and I'm reading 1984. Gill, I enjoy your classes so much!
Hello, I'm a sixty- three italian woman . I've studied english at school a long time ago and now I want to study it again to get better. I like very much the way you teach also because you speak very slowly. Thanks❤ Rita
When I fell on your lessons , just by chance , I got fully engaged in what you are presenting to your audience . Your mastery of english and your accurate and refined pronunciation did really attract me .

Hi Gill, you truly are a treasure and there is no one better on the RUclips channel 😘❤️🙏.
Reading is surely one of the greatest ways to improve your life in so many ways. There are NO DISADVANTAGES to reading!
YOU WILL IMPROVE YOUR:
depth of knowledge,
creativity,
vocabulary,
writing skills,
concentration levels,
perspective of many subjects,
discipline,
personality,
ability to learn and study,
imagination and memory,
ideas on many subjects,
ability to lower stress levels,
ability to pass on knowledge.
So as you can see, reading is a a gift that keeps on giving!
I mentioned that there are no disadvantages to reading, and some people might say that it takes up time (which is priceless).
But when you look at all the POSITIVES,
and remember that everything you learn about life takes time,
so there are really no disadvantages!
Beside that we usually waste a lot of time on things that are quite useless , so time spent in reading won't be considered a wasted one.
I really loved the Grapes of Wrath. After reading it in French I gave it a try in English because I wanted to experience it the way it was meant to. For a foreigner like me it was quite complicated but after a few months I finally finished it. It's a dark yet beautifully haunting book.
Thank you very much! Especially for mentioning 1984! You are great philologist, It's easier when you explain things
Hi Gill. I'm from Vietnam. I just want to say that I love your voice and the way you speak so much. You speak so calmly and clearly and it's very easy to follow. I'm training myself to be able to talk like you. The reason is that I speak really fast when I'm nervous though I don't mean to. Now, I have found my role model ^^
Good choices, Gill, although 'Mrs Dalloway' is I think quite challenging because it's written in experimental 'stream of consciousness' style to show how Mrs Dalloway's mind constantly shifts from one thought to another. I'd also recommend Katherine Mansfield's short stories, which are brilliant and not too difficult.
Saki was really good at the short stories. Short, a little surreal and quite pithy.
I agree about Mrs Dalloway. I read innumerable books in English. Some of the very few I can't reach the end of are Virginia Woolf's. Even though her books aren't very long, she's too erratic. You can read several pages without anything of note happening, but hey, her characters sure think a lot. Lol. It gets boring.
On the other hand Jane Austen's style can be a little more difficult to get into, but once you do her books are real page-turners!
Well, I've been watching you for more than 5 years since I started learning English. I just love your teaching so much, and also your white hair, I really feel like my grandmother is teaching me!
I adore almost every book of Jane Austen, but till now I've read them only in polish (my native language). Reading them in english will be a lovely experience for sure!
By the way, it would be a great pleasure to drink a cup of tea in your company!
The original language is quite challenging at first, but it is worthwhile! Tried one in German - no comparison!! Don't give up!!!
Thank you so much for teaching, dear Gill! What a pleasure to learn from you! I wish to you a good health and lots of happy days ahead!
Hello, Gill!👋 I am Kate, I am 18.
I’ve already read "1984" and "Pride and Prejudice" in Russian. I really enjoyed them!😍And I’ve also read "Jane Eyre" in English when I was 13-14 years old (my teacher gave me this book) and in Russian recently.
And now I am reading "Charlie and the chocolate factory" and "A journey to the center of the Earth" in English.
In general, reading is my favourite leisure time activity, and I’ve read hundreds or, maybe, thousands of books.📚 I really love "Harry Potter", "Master and Margarita", books about "Stranger Things", foreign classics and so on.💖
P.S. Thanks for your video!👏 I am from Russia🇷🇺 and I am learning English, but I’ve understood everything without subtitles. I really like your pronunciation and Britain accent!🥰🇬🇧
O, do you learn English with Gill too? It's cool!😎 Let's be friends? I'm from Russia too. Simply, I am wanting to write you at English)

The wind in the willows from Kenneth Graham is a masterpiece about friendship and loyalty.
My dear Gill ! Thank you for such gorgeous advice ! I just finished reading “Pride and Prejudice” and I am deeply impressed by the manners and etiquette of the 19th century, this is all the merit of this book ! Thank you a lot !
Thank you so much Gill! It was amazing to see how you started from the first sentence of the novels to give an idea the content and mood of each book. Thanks a lot!
We are lucky to have you there.
The "kind" of teacher everyone wishes for.
So I enjoy your lessons even at my old age.
Love the way you pronounce your language and how you try to think of everything there is to teach about a topic or phrase.
Hope you keep on.
Thanks lady!
She has very eloquent way of communication. Speaks with a proper vocabulary and frequency. Each word coming out her mouth feels like crystal clear drop of water.
Gill is such a delightful individual and her recommendations are fantastic reads. These books have been immortalized as classics for obvious reasons but when I re-read these works, I like to pair them up with similar types of books that not only compliment but also bring more depth to the themes and or subject matter. For example, I like to pair Moby Dick with Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea to enhance those feeling of longing, despair and frustration. Or attempt to get a better feel of the dystopian back drop of 1984 with the gritty social undertones and feel of Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby. Or to simply juxtapose Jane Eyre with a novel such as Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea to unequivocally seduce one's curiosity about perspective. Pairing, contrasting and comparing related works truly open up the many dimensions hidden within any one story.
Love your videos Gill, you´re a great teacher!
A Christmas Carol by Dickens (great book) does even have an awesome muppet adaptation!
I would love more book videos please.
Thank you so much for proper English subtitles!
Thank you for your recommendations. I love the summary and contextualization that you have provided for each reading.
I love falling asleep listening to your voice these days. thank you, teacher Gill!😊😊
I never read Mrs. Dalloway. The other books I read in Portuguese a long time ago. I love Agatha Christie's books. Thank you for your recommendations.
Mrs Dalloway is extremely difficult for English learners due to its special style and vocab. One must have perfect English to cope with that book. I have not managed to.
I used to be a big fan of Agatha Christie too, I read almost 100 of them when I were a teenager!
I read " The life and adventures of Robinson Crusoe" of Daniel Defoe.
Your voice is like a musical notes, I can listen to you for hours. I wish I could read at least one book for the rest of my life.
Your calm soft voice can really help me to put myself to sleep. It is like a lullaby.
Your training is absolutely amazing and I feel like I am attending my English literature class. I am not that fluent but I try my best to improve by watching your classes.
These recommendations are wonderful! I especially liked "a Christmas Carol"
Your English is so clear that it is a real pleasure to listen to you!!!
Thanks a lot for this awesome video! I'm currently preparing for my IELTS so it was pretty productive to practice my listening skills) Looking forward to reading all of these books! You are wonderful, Gill!
I read Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” last year. It was a great novel.
Among modern British literature l’ve read, “The Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follett and “The Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro were my favorites. 🙂
oh what a coincidence I read A Tale of Two Cities as well it was fentastic
Jane Eyre is really wonderful book I ever read. Well knitted words in sentences are very thought provoking. Readers will find it enjoyable. It has unique mesmerising refreshing charms even if one reads it over and over again.
How lovely. I've been frequenting the classics section of my library's book store. I have Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and A Christmas Carol as well as about 50 other books that I've bought from there. I'm glad to see someone agrees with my choices!
Thank you a lot for your recommendations! It was quite interesting to listen to you, I am sure these books will be exciting to read, I look forward to your new classes!
Thank you so much Gill! One thing worth mentioning from my own experience, if you think 1984 too long to finish, read "Animal Farm" instead. They basically convey the same idea.
‘Animal Farm’ is more sarcastic actually.
I’ve read three of them:
1- Pride and Prejudice: one of my favorites books and the one that made me like to read, I read it once in Spanish and once in English
2-Jane Eye: I don’t have words to say how deep is this book I think this is one of these books that can change your way to see life and it definitely changed mine
3-1984: another deep, tough, and interesting book it’s incredible how the author creates this world. “Piece of art” I would say
😄Right now I’m excited to read the three other ones
When I hear you speaking I fell happy because I understand what you are speaking. This is a good feeling. Thank you 🤗
Dear Gill, I'm só Glad to say that I've read ALL of tem. And I' m nota British. I' a Brazilian. Thanks dear.
Maybe this is THE SIGN for me to eventually read Moby Dick! And Mrs Dalloway is the book I never heard about before. Thank you, Jill! You are sweetheart as always, a bright person I always love to see in my youtube notification. Have a good day! :)
...and to think Jane Austen had only a window to stare out of to imagine so many novels that continue to be favourite even now. Iam a Jane Austen fan and have Jane Austen book in all my home. Jane Eyre is eeally her story. Well, all the novels mentioned are immortal. Somerset Maugham too is a great favourite. Thank you, Gill. Sharing with my friends. ❤🎉 I loved Animal farm too and George Orwell has predicted a life we'd live today.
