My Maiden flight of the beautiful Avios Grumman Albatross 160mm flying boat from Hobbyking!!
Take off tips: Slowly advance the throttle, head into the wind, keep the wings level on the water as best you can and youll have success!
Thanks to GBLynden for the video help! Check out his channel here: / gblynden
Avios has designed a beautiful twin-engine Grumman Albatross flying boat. What could be better than a large monohull flying boat gracing the skies or taxing across a lake? This excellent plane is made of strong EPO foam and comes with scale plastic fittings for an extremely realistic look. It is painted in a US Navy rescue scheme of seagull gray, yellow and white for easy visibility under all conditions.
The Grumman HU-16 Albatross came into service with the United States Air Force in 1949 and was primarily designed as an amphibious plane for search and rescue missions. It was extensively used for combat search and rescue in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. As an amphibian, it could land on both land and open sea and was optimized for 4-foot (1.2m) seas but could land in heavier seas.
The Albatross is well powered by twin Aerostar 3536-850KV motors with scale 3-blade 10x6 propellers. The 30A reversing ESCs make it easier to navigate around the water. The addition of a water rudder makes maneuvering on water even easier. The built-in flaps provide plenty of lift and make landings and takeoffs look easy. The Albatross provides a great presence in the air that will look outstanding at any time and can easily do scale passes that all enthusiasts enjoy.
Get out on the water and go soaring across the sky with the Avios Grumman Albatross.

To those wondering, this is the actual maiden flight, the answer is yes it is. It flew great every flight, even with changing wind direction every 30 seconds lol
GBLynden's RC great flight.
Thanks! It was fun to see John kill it :)
GBLynden's RC ្បបក
What location are you looks like a park or something
The second take off it's how nice!
Very nice plane , and the 2nd landing was a charm, thanks for posting.
Great plane. Great model. Both my father and I were Grumman engineers. Thanks for this.
I want one please.....Frank misssssschief welcome......
Extra Cool. Looks like a fully grown planes in the sky accept for the quick turns
Fantastic aircraft. Looks so real.
Thank for the flight I've been waiting to see that bird take of from water
That take off at 3:50 was perfect, super smooth, such a beautiful plane.....really tempted to get one..
Its pretty impressive in person.
Fantastic video and fantastic plane thank you
Great looking in the air! That flies as good as it looks! Thanks!
It really does, so gracefull!
Awesome flight!
Excellent flying and amazing camera work as always. Great job guys.

Great first flight! The kits are so special now! Great videography too!
Thank you!
Beautifully flown John.
Appreciate it!
bro you did a exellent job flying that thing ,, awesome job thanks for sharing !!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice bird. Even has counter rotating motors. I like the easy battery access also.
JohnVHRC, I love that maiden take off of the albatross, that was so smooth,
Thank you, such a great flyer!
Gorgeous plane and well displayed!
Thank you!
Very nicely done. Nice to see a flight video with someone who knows what they are doing at the sticks. I'm sold on this sweet little rig.
Thank you! Please use the link below the video :)
Great video! I had no idea the motors went forwards AND backwards! Thanks for sharing
They're electric motors, so they can. The original R-1820's don't do that so easily ...
That was great nice video enjoyed all the take offs and landings :-)
Wow what a beast of plane, awesome job!
Its a powerhouse!
What a great video, nice flying 5 stars to the camera man
Thanks! GBLynden did great!
Thank you very much! I am glad you enjoyed my camerawork 😀
Nice flight there, John....
Great Maiden. Looks like you don’t want to go too slow with this bird, you did a great job!
Thanks! Itll slow down quite a bit in flight, but you dont want to do a full stall landing like a wheel plane
I really enjoyed your video. Beautiful plane and mixing my two favourite things, water and flying. Brilliantly piloted too. Thank you for this wonderful video. 😊👍
Thank you! Appreciate the comment!
JohnVHRC absolutely my pleasure
Nice piloting awesome plane super smooth 👍 love to have one
Very nice! And that nice long take off halfway through was beautiful :) Looks great fun. My only reservation is the spares HK never have anything I want in stock!
Thanks!
Super cool.
Beautiful..... Congratulations..👌👍
Awesome Aircraft!
Great Flight footage!
Thanks for sharing this video!
Thank you!
Thanks man!
I watch this on Wiser Lake and what a flash back to my kodiak days. I can't wait till it comes out in USCG colors "Goat". Im hopeful :)
Beautiful flying ,,,,,well done ,,better than perfect
Appreciate it!
That is so cool!
Nice sound effects!
Grazie bel volo!! Very Good👍👍👍👍
Just brilliant
Beautiful!
To be honest , I know jack squat about RC flying , but I can say that was about THE smoothest flying I’ve ever seen !!!
Thanks!
Sweet boat. Making me wonder about a Catalina - or a Short Sunderland.
Awesome!!
Hey bud that was awesome man. We saw these before they came out at hk live and they looked so good. Man you have the perfect spot to fly it their. Great job bud 👊
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Great maiden flight. I may consider since I hear my park has an area to fly.
Is there a forum thread on this one yet?
Yes, a few on RCGroups!
Nice, I wanted to see it transit from water to land. Thanks for the video
Mine is on its way , what Lipo size and c rating would you recommend now that you have flown the albatross many times ...15 min flight times are perfect ??
Looks gorgeous! I ordered one today.
Woohoo!
Klasse Modell und gut geflogen 👍👍👍
Nice flying John!
Thanks!
Have you been flying lately?
Nice job here!...Where did you set your CG? Just getting mine ready. Had the pleasure of doing two water landings in a HU-16 on Lake Isabela CA. Awesome amount of fun!
Good video 👍🏻
That is awesomeeee!
Thats cool! The geese don't sound too thrilled about it though LMAO
Flies amazing! But it glides like a rock....gotta land with enough power. Third landing was nice.
Twin 3 blade props and big round cowls. Slows anything down fast
Beautiful 👍 😍
any landing that the little men inside can walk away from is a good landing
Great job :-)
She flies so beautyfull
That is sweet!
This is the one I flew in:Note the clear nose! they had a bed in there and you could lie down and photograph as they landed. Flight of a lifetime....got to share it with my daughter too!
You make me want to play ace combat seven: skies unknown now, LOL 😂🛫🛩
Great flight. I do have a question, for half flaps and full flaps, what's your Spektrum setting with Elevator mix? I don't seem to able to set it right. Its either balloon (not enough down elevator) or drop too fast (too much down elevator). Thank you
I use flight modes, so I use the trims to tune it.
Nicely done John. That thing has a nice presence in the air although I was disappointed you didn’t do any rolling harriers. LOL 🤣checked Hobby King and no stock. 😖
perfect fly!
You make this look so pretty.
Nice Ryanair landing!
Nice lake to fly from
It is pretty nice!
Good Piloting
I’ve been wanting one but the are never in stock in the USA warehouse.
The thing is like on turbo speed or something.....nice toy.
Excellent flying and the landings got better and better. I definitely enjoyed the video. Is their a P - 38 for sale? Electric of course
“I’m rolling dude” 🤤
MOLE Hahaha
Right on. Looks legit
It really is!
Looks very docile , definite buy
Engine reverse. Awesome.
Nice!
Enjoyed your video! Is this something that would be good for a beginner? Or is their something else that you could recommend? I know nothing about this and don't really know anyone that does. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
This would be a bad beginner plane. Id recommend an eflite apprentice
Im looking for a plane to do real cockpit fpv type flying. Great center window for camera. looking to do controlled landing with screen overlay of instruments.
What kind of plane is that and how does it float
How are you able to reverse ? Speed controller ? Pitchable props?
Speed Controllers reverse the motors
Sweet.
So this was a maiden - and video from last week was second flight (71% and then 50% from same batt)?
Thats correct! Ive since set my timer to 14 min I think or so, for my flying style I could go longer if need be!
Some people expect the maiden flight goes always perfect, this plane was setup correct and was flew by a scale advance pilot, you can tell by the way he use the rudder in flight, and the way he landed the first time, bumping, but the other landings he grease the plane on the water, now the hi speed cruising over the water was super impressive. After this review, I just Click buy now. LOL>
Thanks! I hope you used the link in the description!
Nice!! :) just plug in a reciever and fly ?
Watch the build video, but basically, and a battery.
Your a good pilot
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Nice video guys as always..which is the correct cg according ur opinion??best rgrds fm athens🤙
Im running the factory CG in the videos, But, Ive played with it a little more forward, and I think it could go forward a little more. I need to get out again and test more.
Would be nice with retracting wheels functionality or upgradeability. Could drive it into and out of the water plus fly it without the need for water. That i would buy tomorrow.
It would be, but then the plane wouldnt be so affordable :/
I have RC trucks, boats and quads. Could this be a good first plane? Thoughts, recommendations...
No. Not a first plane.
De plane De plane Boss De plane!
One of the pilots visit the chiropractor next day. Hey nice plane thanks.
Se ven muy buenos tus avionetas aunque la distancia no es muy lejos es un poquito serca agarra avance con el agua 👐👐👏👏🤔😀
Sweet take off at 3:47
Thanks!
I fly the real one!!!! Fantastic plane! ❤
Lucky man!! Ive watched videos, they are bad ass!!
The plane flies very well. It looks great in the flight. The construction looks good also. I saw this on demo at the AMA Eaast Expo. The first thing to catch my eye was the out of scale tall rudder. I built a plane about the same size 9 years ago with US Coast Guard markings from Quonset Point , RI. It is such a pleasant flying plane if you just cruise it scale like to give it the real effect.
i always wanted to build a rc sea plane
Nice flying and great camera work! Have you tried the differential thrust yet? Rudder mixed to throttles? I suspect the rudder to throttle mix would eliminate the need for the weed catcher.
dave mcddd not yet. But I will in the future!
Thanks for the camera work compliment! I was manning those controls 😀
dave mcddd Dave do you know if the Orange tx6i can do the diff thrust and keep all the other functions.... flaps, reverse, lights? Everything on mine works perfectly but I haven’t even attempted to try the thrust as I don’t think my tx can do it 🤦🏼♂️ was thinking of upgrading to a real spektrum dx8 but the albatross is the only plane I have that would make use of it, my other planes are just 3/4channel. Haven’t flown it yet so maybe I’ll be happy as it is without the differential thrust. 👍🏻
@@TheMuddatrucker The Orange tx6i is only 6 channels, and it takes at least 7 channels to operate all of the functions on the Albatross in this video. 1. Elevator 2. Rudder 3. Ailerons 4. Flaps 5. Left Motor 6. Right Motor 7. Reverse both motors If I absolutely had to choose only 6 channels, I'd keep the differential thrust, and skip the reversing. I don't have this particular plane, but on my Bushmule the lights are on when the battery is plugged in, and I see no need to operate the lights from a separate Tx/Rx channel. Tx/Rx controlled lights plus all of the above would require at least an 8 channel transmitter and receiver for the Albatross. The Bushmule also has a bomb-bay door, which requires one more channel than the Albatross. Therefore the Bushmule requires at least 8 channels to operate all of the standard functions, and 9 channels if the lights are controlled separately. Upgrading from a tx6i to a DX8 would be a good idea, but moving up to a DX9 would be a much better idea. Upgrading transmitters a step at a time will get very expensive in the long run. You're better off to bite the bullet and get a transmitter that currently seems like more than you will ever need so it will take longer to outgrow it. I've had really good luck buying used transmitters. A used DX9 currently runs around $300, which is about the same as a new DX8. In my case I'm using a FrSky Taranis X9D with an FrSky 8 ch receiver. This radio only costs about $200 brand new, and blows away any of the Spektrum radios until you get into the ones costing several thousand dollars.
dave mcddd Thanks for the detailed reply!👍🏻 I used to fly r/c planes 5/6 years ago but quit due to work life, decided to start again 2 months ago and in that time have purchased the eflite f27 evolution, durafly Excalibur and now the albatross and only had chance to fly the f27 evo for 2 short flights lol, this is the only hobby I’ve come back to that ISNT like riding a bike! I was very rusty so that’s the reason I’m waiting a while to fly the albatross, a little more time with the others first although I’ve got a feeling if I get the cg right then the albatross will probably be easier than the other two to fly but I used to have the f27 Stryker and could fly it quite well so thought the evo was best to re-learn everything.
The tx6i I have is brand new 🤦🏼♂️lol never mind, my old one 5 years ago was the spektrum dx6i but I sold it along with everything else I had, not that it would’ve helped me in this situation any better than my current tx6i but I think at some point in the near future I’ll buy another (better) radio.
What would you say the MAIN advantage of the diff thrust would be, on the water or in the air or both? The only experience of it I have was with my sons hobbyzone firebird stratos, it was only a small toy like glider but the workings of it was really clever and did go some way to making a very light weight plane handle some decent sized winds, I still that one it was the only one I kept 😁
