    Nice walk through the settings but unsure about your differentials setup and like to ask. To compensate for adverse yaw, where the down elevator surface create more drag, as you said you typically configure less down and more up. In your situation, you will need to compensate some other way, perhaps up elevator . Otherwise the turns would be uncoordinated with nose pointing outward of the turn. I've had the exact setup and the result was quite high rate of up elevator to sustain the turn as well as ruder mixing. Also another problem is generally with very high flaps, you need delay. That is because as soon as you enable the flaps, nose comes up, before air catches the stabilizer to compensate the mixing. The fix is push the nose down a bit then enable flaps. I can never figure out how to mix delay into an already mixed channels.

      For flaperon differential, you should not use so much so that the plane suffers from an excessive amount of adverse yaw. In addition, proper gliding technique is to turn mostly with the rudder in order to maintain the efficiency of the wing. Also, airplanes generally need up elevator in a turn regardless of their differential.
      You do not need an elevator delay on a flaperon elevator mix. There is no point at which you are waiting for the stabilizer to "catch" the air; The stabilizer constantly has air flowing around it during flaperon deployment, so any stabilizer inputs will take effect immediately. I think the effect you are describing is when the whole airplane rises suddenly when the flaperons are deployed quickly, which is due to the airfoil's shape changing dramatically when the airplane is still traveling at a relatively high airspeed. So the amount of stabilizer correction would ideally be proportional to airspeed.

      You could, but in my experience I haven't been able to notice any adverse yaw with DLGs except when using the flaperons. Maybe it's more noticable with other types of gliders.

    Great video. Very informative. What would be a really good follow up video is how to actually set these flight modes up indifferent radios. I'm having trouble figuring it out in a DX8 and a DX9

    Thank you for posting this!! Your videos are the most helpful I've found and I'm sick of those cop out statements like "start with 1 flight mode and go from there" or "each planes settings will be different" .... got it..😡. An example like this goes a LONG way for a starting point to get people flying but they are guarded like military intelligence. Thanks for taking the time

    how do i connect a rudder preset to switch (DX 6e). I had no probs when setting up different elevator angles for different flight phases on a switch (flap adjustment) - but cant manage to attach the rudder....

      Thanks! I purposely left that part out for this video since each transmitter is different. However, I can definitely go over the process on my DX8 if there's enough interest.

      @@TimmyRC To be honest, I am kind of self interested since I have the same transmitter. Having given full disclosure on that account, I still think it is a good idea to do a video. If you can program a DX8 G1, the newer transmitters (I suspect) are easier to program so it may translate.

    Does the snapflap adds on top of the differential? so when you turn and pull a bit the stick, doesn't it adds too much flap down movement?

      Yes, they add. No, it's not too much, especially since you should be doing most of the turning with the rudder.

    I'm looking to get a glider, but I'm concerned about radio transmitter power / distance. I wish to avoid to loose the glider due to radio transmitter's capability. At what altitude do you estimate that the glider can climb? I'm thinking to get a DX 6e. What would you advice?

      For gliders of this size you generally will be more concerned with losing sight of it before being concerned with losing signal. Pretty much any brand/protocol will be good enough. Spektrum doesn't have the best range in the industry, but it works just fine for DLGs.

    I am trying to figure out if I would enjoy this or not. I like flying my Night Radian and my Conscendo, but it can get boring after a while because you just power up, get to altitude and cruise around. Watching gliders on video is boring, but I suspect the thermal hunting would be fun. I would be curious to hear how you rank DLG flying compared to your favorite prop planes and electric gliders.

      DLGs are my favorite fixed wing aircraft I've flown. They don't require a fancy launch system, they can be flown at very small fields, and they fly for hours on a charge. Competition-grade DLGs are highly engineered, high performance machines (unlike a Radian), and those kinds of machines are always more fun to pilot. There is also something satisfying about flying under your own power, and hunting for thermals without a motor is a fun challenge.

      @@TimmyRC Thank you. Okay so you enjoy DLG's even more than a $2k 3M powered glider? Could you say something about the recommended skill and experience levels (really two different things...most of my crashes have been a result of low experience and not low skill). I am new to RC (1 year). I can fly my Conscendo, Radian, Turbo Timber, UMX TT, etc. all just fine. But boy, I don't want to crash a Snipe.
      Oh, and can you recommended a particular DLG to me? All I really know about what I want is that I think bigger is better.

      @@jdouglasj2000 I have never flown a high end 3m glider, so I can't speak to that. However, with a large powered glider you lose the small-field-flying capability, the fun hand launch, motorless gliding purity, some aerobatic capability, and some of the challenge of thermalling. My closest point of reference is a powered Bird of Time, which I just don't find as fun as DLGs for the aforementioned reasons.
      If you are already proficient at flying fixed wing you shouldn't have much trouble transitioning to a DLG. Due to F3K rules, all competition-grade DLGs are 1.5m. You will get the best performance with a 1.5m competition model such as a Snipe 2 or BAMF 2. However, I constantly recommend the 1m Armsoar Deviant for beginners since it has the same construction as competition models, but is smaller, making it easier to launch, slightly more durable, and less expensive. You can also try to pick up a used or unbuilt competition model from the RCGroups classifieds. I got my Snipe as an unbuilt kit through RCGroups and saved a few hundred dollars.

      Thanks! I would say the Zone V2, but it is probably outdated at this point since it came out in 2011. I am not up to date with publicly available DLG airfoils.

    Hey,
    Is there no need to mix some elevator in your presets? E.g. If I change into thermal mode i have to mix some elevator down into it so that the plane doesn‘t lift the the nose and slows down until it stops.

      Yes, often times you need mix elevator into the presets to keep the plane flying level to adjust for the camber changes.

    When you say 40% differential, do you mean down is 140% of up or that up is 40% of down?

      Up is 40% less than down. This means up is 60% of down, or down is 167% of up.

      @@TimmyRC do you use any BEC to regulate the voltage or your electronics are directly powered by 1S Lipo?

      @@MontyMontemayor It is direct 1S power. You have to make sure the receiver and servos are rated for the low voltage to avoid losing control. Also, there is no over discharging protection, so it is a good idea to run a receiver with voltage telemetry.

      @@yeahitworks Dymond D60s for flaperons and Dymond D45s for tail surfaces. They used to be the gold standard, but there are better glider servos nowadays.

    I note that you don't have any camber to elevator mix. How do you prevent your Snipe from pitching up when you increase camber? Just manual elevator?

      I have slight changes in elevator programmed for the different flight modes to maintain level flight. However, for flaperon functionality I do not use an elevator mix. For my setup, I have found that the amount of down elevator needed to maintain pitch is highly dependent on airspeed when the flaps are applied. Therefore, an elevator mix will apply the wrong amount of elevator most of the time since it cannot react to changes in airspeed, so I personally find it easiest to omit the elevator mix altogether.

      @@TimmyRC Yes, this is all true. What I found helps is to program a mode change delay on the camber, i.e. the camber changes slowly between modes - this reduces the nose up behaviour as it naturally slows down as the flaps increase. But I still find that the final angle of attack changes more than I'd like and I don't want to add mix. I'm wondering how much the CG is affecting this. I have a Strike 3.

      @@ChristieNel I have my flaperons on the throttle stick, which I find useful since I can apply the flaps at whatever speed I want and however much I want. The amount of pitching that occurs with application of flaps changes depending on the airplane. I can't find anything definitive about the CG's effect, but I suspect there might be some relationship since changing the CG location changes the sensitivity of the elevator.

      @@TimmyRC I have some amount of flaps on my throttle stick in cruise mode only. I'm finding it annoying having to switch to landing mode to get full flaps down, so considering a lot more flaps on my throttle stick, with perhaps a very strong exponential. How do you brake?

      @@ChristieNel I have full flaps available via the throttle stick in all flight modes except launch mode so that I do not have to change flight modes to brake. I do not use expo.

    Good but would have been better, actually excellent, with some measurements given for each mode as you can't really see what is happening with the surfaces and have little idea of the relative movements

      Thanks! The amount of deflection needed changes from model to model and should be determined experimentally, so I didn't bother providing measurements.

    I am a newbie. I have a sail plane with throttle, rudder and elevator. Should I keep throttle and rudder on the left stick and elevator on the right stick? At this time, I have elevator and rudder on the right stick and throttle on the left stick. Thank you to anyone that can help me.

      Typically the rudder is on the right stick for your kind of airplane (assuming mode 2).

    What happens when you deploy full flaps, then operate the aileron?

      The ailerons become pretty ineffective at controlling roll with full flaps deployed. Adverse yaw is common in this situation. Therefore, it is best to steer with the rudder when full flaps are deployed.

      @@bohan9957 Yes, generally you want to steer with the rudder as much as possible so that the wing's airfoil maintains maximum efficiency. However, I do not use a rudder and aileron mix in the transmitter.

      No. Read it again. These are 2 different thing. Adverse yaw/ differential is a behaviour of yaw induced by ailerons during a roll. Both ailerons down (flapperons) as no seperate flaps on these dlg’s is the method to increase lift whilst in a thermal.
