Con el paso del tiempo está más que claro que Cuba al igual que Sudáfrica participaron en un conflicto interno angolano, cada uno apoyando a un bando contrario, con la diferencia que Cuba, un país pobre y sin recursos, se desangró luchando en tierras muy lejanas, en un conflicto que no representaba ningún interés para el cubano común, mientras Sudáfrica luchaba para mantener un aliado vital como Namibia en su vecindario y para alejar el peligro del comunismo, en teoría al menos.
