Fun fact: Transformers: Age of Extinction was the first movie to ever include a Dolby Atmos audio track on standard Blu-ray when it was first released on September 30 2014.
I think the 3d had atmos aswell if I remember correctly.
@@iansteventon4221 yes it does.
Great video. I always waited for the 4K version but now you have opened my eyes! I had no idea. Thanks for the tip. Keep these informative videos coming
Woohoo! You’re welcome! 🎉
Don't forget to check the size of the BD disc as many 4k discs need larger BD discs like 66 or 100 to have enough space to fit the 4k pix and sounds. If the Blu-ray has ATMOS it will might be compressed if they use a smaller size BD disc like a BD50 etc. More disc size/space is always better
Kong skull island and Mad Max Fury Road on Blu-ray have Dolby Atmos
Mission Impossible Rogue Nation and Fallout Blu-Rays also have Atmos. I have a couple of others, but have forgotten :)
The Ist one I bought was obviously Transformers Age Of Extinction but I never picked up on its Atmos Capabilities then . Only when I got BvS Dawn of Justice UE in 2016 , did I realise that some standard Blu rays were now coming with Atmos. By that time , I unknowingly already had had at least 3 movies with Atmos .
Strange it's a news for you! I've seen lot many standard Bluray titles with Atmos.
1. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), incredible Atmos track (highly recommend)
2. Gemini man 1080p, Atmos
3. Pan (2015) 1080p, Atmos
...and many more.
p.s.: I'm always a fan of standard Bluray movie titles, collecting since 2010. They are cheapand value for money.
Cannot forget Pearl Harbor (2001), and Avatar, Sound of Music on my LG 1080p plasma 50PK550R. Looked awesome.
Yesssss! 🎉
Yep, i was going to mention 10 cloverfield lane. Theres a handful of old movies (i.e. like 10 yrs) that had atmos. Pacific Rim, Mad Max Fury Road. Even obscure The Last Witchhunter Blu Ray. But its great news to see more blu rays getting Atmos!
We're sidelining DTS:X in this discussion. If I'm not mistaken 'Aquaman' standard Bluray came with DTS:X
@@Sas-wk9lj I prefer DtsX personally, as I only have a q600 5.1.2 Atmos sound bar, with rears, with a minimal Atmos experience. It sounds harsher to me than the dtsX, and the base 5 channel surround feels a lot more immersive in dtsX. Obviously better systems will have better sounds, but I'm happy with this in a lounge 🙃
The Blu-ray of The Man from Uncle has a great Atmos track.
It’s so funny that you posted this. Right after the videos about gravity with Atmos, I happen to see that fantastic beasts had an Atmos track advertised for it when I was Thrifting so I got it. That made me start to think it was a lot more Blu-rays and sure enough I’m now going through my collection and finding it on a lot of my 1080P blu-rays. 😊
It’s only just begun! 🤩
Same here 🙃
I just bought a bunch of blu ray atmos discs for $3.00 at my local used bookstore. Atmos discs have been out since 2015.
Hooray for local book stores!
I love physical media there's nothing better than getting it in the mail and opening up the box
Ghost in the Shell Live Action Version has Dolby Atmos on the 1080p Bluray and I adore that film and always knew that it sounded great 💕
Nice! 🎉
That site actually has two lists in the forums for Atmos and DTS-x but YT won't let me post the links. Good starting point for folk.
The first Atmos and DTS:X movies I purchased were on 2k Blu Ray. And that was back in 2017 when I first set up Atmos.
Yep! Just making sure those don’t know about it are also aware! 🎉
From what i understand, Atmos has been available on standard Blu-ray since 2014, Paramount, WB, Universal, Lionsgate all made the switch, the only conpanies who haven't are 20th Century Fox (when they were Fox), Disney, and oddly enough Sony, 20th and Disney titles at least offer DTS-HD MA 7.1 mixes, but Sony for some reason is holding onto DTS HD MA 5.1, Sony has released standard Blu-rays with Atmos before, "Pixels " from 2015 has the Atmos on Blu-ray and thats from sony.
There are also some 3D Blu-rays with Dolby Atmos and DTS X, they are rare, but its the ultimate experience for me
@@Lighthouse3D Atmos is now the standard but I still have still have mad love for DTS-HD Master Audio mixes. For instance, when I watched the opening scene of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones in Dolby Atmos, I expected an immersive experience. However, it somehow didn’t meet my expectations and felt somewhat lackluster. Curious, I switched to the DTS-HD MA 6.1 mix and used Neural:X for upmixing. To my surprise, the sound was significantly enhanced, both in quality and immersion. It’s interesting to note that, particularly with older movies, Neural:X seems to outperform even Dolby Atmos in delivering a superior upmix of a DTS-HD soundtrack.
@@spiktan I believe it, the sound mixes on those Star Wars were pre-disney, so it went through all the certifications from Lucas and THX, the 4ks have the Atmos and unfortunately the Blu-rays have a DTS HD MA 7.1 that I'm assuming is a downmix from the Atmos
I only have ReadyPlayer 1, Valerian, and a few others with both. I bet if I look at my wife's Mary Poppins Blu-ray, it will be in Atmos, dtsX, Aurio 3D, the lot 🙃
Another RUclipsr Movie Collector told me Atmos is going to be the new standard, simply for cost. Ready player one, Valerian, are both Atmos, and DtsX, Birds of Prey, the Grinch, John Wicks 4, later Transformers and most Godzilla franchise are 1080 discs I have with Atmos soundtrack. I may have more. I recently bought both Dune discs, and they are only Atmos. I have noticed since buying a new TV au8000 to cu 8000, the 24fps is no longer available. It had banding till I turned it off. But picture is still upscaled. May be a new standard change 🙃
The animation thing is a great suggestion! Every time I pop in one of my Studio Ghibli Blurays, I’m just blown away by how good they already looked! I will take note of this before buying animated films in the future.
You’re welcome! 😉
hi, when i look for a blu ray i check to see if it's in atmos as a normal thing if it not then i buy the 4k version as both versions are released at the same time.
That’s a good habit to keep! 😊
Yo Ealan😊
I have a Bluray edition of the Penny Dreadful series, and it is Dolby Atmos... I am happy with the DTS:X ones, not the Dolby Atmos ones hahaha :)) Ealon, I want to ask you something. I live in Turkey and it's region 2 (region B for Blu-ray) but some region 1 DVDs work here. For example, the Smallville DVD Box set. Normally, zone A - 1st zone gives an error immediately. Why do some DVDs work and how can I understand which region 1 DVD works here when I order from Amazon USA? (Devices without a region code are not sold in my country)
I’m not sure about that. I think it may just come down to the studio behind it, or the distributor. 🤷♂️
I discovered this 2 years ago when I bought the Dune 1080p Bluray disc. I have an LG C1 4k TV, and a now 12 year old.Cambridge Audio Bluray player. The LG confirmed on screen briefly Dolby Atmos was being output! I was thrilled! And Dune looked great upscaled as well. The Cambridge 751BD is still a great player!
Hell yeah! 🎉
I don't even have dolby atmos in my bedroom yet I just have a regular 5.1 setup but when movies have dolby atmos it downgrades to dolby true HD but the disk's do give me a option in using dolby digital 5.1 i wonder if i used Dolby digital 5.1 will it support what configuration i have or is Dolby true HD also 5.1?
Dolby True HD is typically a 7.1 signal, so I would go with the best possible signal you can and let your AVR output it to 5.1.
@@ealanosborne good to know so I’m better off setting the movie to dolby digital 5.1 instead of true HD so it supports my configuration
@@Lowkey_nxthxn Not quite. What I’m saying is, Dolby True HD is the highest possible quality signal, so go with THAT, and let your AVR downmix it to 5.1. 👍
Buddy. Atmos can be passed through to the receiver by any blu-ray player. It’s incorrect to suggest a 4k player is necessary. You may want to clarify this. Also, there’s no “rule” one way or another regarding the standard Blu-ray release containing Atmos or not. Traditionally it’s been withheld from the standard BR release in order to encourage the sale of the higher priced 4K version… you may see Atmos more often, but make no mistake, if the studios have a way to squeeze an extra penny out of the consumer, they usually will. This won’t change.
I only became aware of Atmos generally a while back and had already bought some Blu-rays with it included such as Top Gun, Star Trek Beyond and It Chapters 1 and 2! Since getting a 4K player and TV alongside new 4K purchases I've actually been buying a load of cheap BDs new and second hand such as Sully and 10 Cloverfield Lane, all for under £10 each! As my TV is only 43" LED then HDR/DV isn't my first consideration when buying a title.
Nice! Excellent bargain hunting, my friend.
Game Of Thrones seasons 5 - 8 blu-rays has dolby atmos soundtracks.
One of my favorite scenes in Atmos is when Jon Snow goes up north and has to fight the zombies. They surround the hut he's in... You can hear them like they are ACTUALLY on the ROOF!!! It seriously felt like they were in my actual attic!!! haha! Awesome!
Mad Max Fury Road 3D Blu-Ray release in 2015 has Dolby Atmos too!
Is the height output good ?, I've heard mixed reviews of it 🙃
Generally, if a 4K of a new movie from Warner, Universal, Lionsgate or Paramount has an Atmos track, the Blu-ray will follow suit. Big exception being older catalog titles since 9/10 times they simply include an old Blu-ray, with some exceptions being The Matrix and Back to the Future. Ofc Disney, Sony, and plenty other labels always limit Atmos to the 4K.
Regarding the Kung Fu Panda 4 bluray did you notice that the TrueHD audio is 16 bit 96khz where as the 4K bluray is 24bit 48khz? Do you think the studio did that so that the audio file size is smaller? Also I thought that Dolby Atmos always has to be minimum 24 bit 48khz minimum regardless whether it is either TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus.
It is a bit strange, yeah. I mean 16-bit would be a slightly smaller file size, but not THAT much smaller, come on… 🤔
Do you think they might have different compression levels, between studios, or are they measuring the same bit rates as 4k?🙃
There are times the Atmos is 16-bit instead of 24-bit to save space, but it’s pretty rare.
@@ealanosborne thanks, my old ears probably won't notice it that much. The difference in interest between men and women, in general is funny, regarding home cinema. We pore over every pixel and channel separation, and the better half usually doesn't care as long as it works. Off to count my Atmos blurays now. Good to enjoy a topic that doesn't cause so much comment hate. Unless dedicated 4k guys come for you! 🙃
@@ealanosborne Just one question, does any dtsX front channel leak into height speakers, or would a DSP effect have to do this? I only use a q600b soundbar, and have heard height separation on RUclips videos, and listening close up to my "ambient beam" 10w x 2 height shenanigans 🙃
@@MunKeeButt67 Soundbars are a different story. They tun on their own Atmos or DTS:X codec, so you could very well get some front channel info leaking into the heights. But typically that's when it's a 5.1 or 7.1 mix being upmixed to Atmos/DTS:X. A native Atmos/DTS:X mix should have discrete info coming out of each speaker.
@@ealanosborne yes I've definitely had height separation, but at this volume and size of speaker. I've heard it on Peter Gabriel DVD, I/O, but is lost in movies, with 180w LCR, and only 20w height. Thank you for informative responses. I am not an expert, but well versed in getting a great sound and picture from what I have, and a non condescending conversation is always a joy 🙃
My Sony 4k player does a great job on this, even on dvds!! The player does all the grunt work & the tv cleans it up as a finishing touch.
The sound is always better on a disc anyway, I’ve got Blu rays of films made in the late 60s with Dolby 2.0 which sound more like 5.1-7.1, amazing!!
Atmos is king for me (hearing problems)
4k discs look & sound great but 1080p upscaled is more than acceptable
I agree a good player is worth its salt, as is a premium tv if you can stretch a bit
More Atmos as standard is right up my street!
Thanks for sharing! 🎉
I prefer BD sometimes as 4K HDR can often be super dark on a projector. You can use HDR Optimisers etc to help of course.
Thanks
You’re welcome, Craig!
Used to buy about 25 bluerays back in 2019 when i was getting in this hobby, just regular blueray discs with atmos.
Woohoo! 🎉
The first Blu-ray with Atmos that I discovered was Terminator Genesis
The 4K uhd copy of Ready PlayerOne has either been very expensive or unavailable. Was surprised to find my recent Blu Ray purchase of the same title had D Atmos audio 😁 got it for 3$ I think 😍
What a steal! 🎉
It's both dtsX and Atmos 🙃
Twister also had an Auro3d soundtrack.
Thanks for the info Ealan, also the 2023 Ferrari Blu-Ray is also in Dolby Atmos.
Hell yeah it is! 😎
I purchased "Ghost in Shell " the new version standard Bluray with Dolby Atmos for $3 😂 2nd hand shop.
4k is for Dolby Vision which is better...HDR kinda standard.
What a steal! 😄
I'm obsessed with Dolby Atmos when I see the soundtrack doesn't have it I don't want to watch it LOL I know they're still information being sent up there like the old 7.1 rear channels but now I'm an addict
Have you confirmed these Blu rays are "true Atmos"? I saw a comment somewhere saying blu ray is limited to 7.1.. and you need 4k for full object based audio. Have you heard of such a thing? I just picked up a bunch of standard blu rays for the "Atmos"
I haven’t heard that, no. Atmos to this day is still technically traveling on a 7.1 Dolby True HD audio signal, with object panning metadata packed into the signal, which is then decoded by your AVR. But I haven’t heard of Atmos being limited to only 7.1 on a Blu-ray disc.
@@ealanosborne You're probably right. I would like to get into the technicals and if we are getting "metadata". But not sure where to look or who to ask.
The movie Barbie from last year on Blu-ray has dolby atmos.
Yes I now this my blu ray copy of interstellar & ready player one are both atmos. With the 4k version only upscaled 1080p i've just stuck with the blu ray instead of buying both 4k.
Interstellar isn't atmos. None of his films ( nolan) are atmos
I thought that was so clever building up a huge Apple TV digital movie collection. Mind you, that's when I bought a Blu-ray player.
If there's one thing I've got right, it has to be my channel name 😂
Hahaha!
Yes long I know that atmos is my 1st choice 2nd is vdeo😊
I can remember importing john wick 1080p coz we didn't get atmos in uk . Awesome aswell .
I've bought few 4k blu rays. I still have my Samsung 55'' 3D tv. I have a 7.4.1 with a Marantz Cinema 50, Panasonic UB820. I prefer physical disc over streaming. Plus some my 3D movies are in Atmos. Just order The Great Wall in 3D and it's in Atmos. Do plan on getting a 65'' OLED from LG that has 3D. Will continue to buy 3D and 4K blu rays.
Hell yeah! Physical media forever! 😎🎉
American sniper on bluray had atmos too.
Oh yeah! 🎉
Regarding 4k, I get a perfectly watchable picture with bluray, with HDR boost active. I think 4k takes too much softness away from movies, and some just look like a film set rather than a movie. Also my pet hate is the close up 4k fantastic detail, with a totally blurred background. I only have 4k experience from You Tube, Netflix Prime apple tv, but some 4k content gives too much away 🙃
Have been looking for a discussion on this very topic for a long time. Leave it to Ealan to bring it to us. On a completely unrelated subject…do you actually have a spiral staircase case in your house and if you do, who do you think you are, Austin Powers? 😊
Haha! It is a spiral staircase, indeed. But I had to film this video in my brother-in-law’s house which is slowly being renovated. 😂
Happens more than most people realize. Hell, "Shaft" with Samuel L Jackson has Atmos but the fact of the matter is if you're a non-4k collector, chances are your not rocking with Atmos gear anyways and it's not your while to intentionally invest in it.
Disney was a major culprit, they have withheld Atmos mixes from BluRay, forcing you to get the 4k version. Also, the first time I noticed Atmos on BluRay was on my 3D blu ray discs... Ready Player One is amazing in 3D when you listen with Atmos!! I wish more 3D titles had Atmos :( ... The first DUNE does! That's another amazing one in 3D with Atmos!! Sadly, the part 2 will not have a 3D release :( sad day....
Awwww, lame! 😒
@@ealanosborne same thing with Mad Max... Fury Road, 3D blu ray in Atmos!! AMazing!!! Furiousa? Nope. Haven't seen it yet though... maybe it's not worth it anyway haha.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire doesn't have a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, none of Sony discs have Dolby Atmos they only have a 5.1 (48kHz, 16-bit)
Yeah, Sony’s…weird
I would love to have Atmos on Blu-ray I don't think I own any of those though
You should look, you may already have some. I bought Birds of prey for my wife a couple of years back and that is just Atmos 🙃
@@MunKeeButt67 you are correct I just discovered my Blu-ray of the last Voyage of the Demeter has atmos 😁
@@vanderhoff66fu haha nice one, you may still have more. I don't know if there is any suppression, but mine is loud as hell and very clear. I have about 140 blurays, so not very happy with Mr Osbourne now, as I'm going to be checking them for Atmos 🙃
Dolby Atmos was generally available on blu-ray until studios decided to stop it so buyers with Atmos equipment would pay extra for the 4K disc. The same with DTS:X. Now they don't even include a blu-ray upgrade for new 4K scans with new uhd discs, basically because a blu-ray remaster from a new 4K master has quality that comes too close for comfort to the new 4K release for less money.
I have atleast 20 or so that has atmos on them
On a related topic, physical media sounds and looks soooo much better than streaming. So much better. It is clearly worth the investment. Streaming has its place, but is ultimately inferior, cheap and lazy.
It the movie it had Dolby Atmos on the Blu-ray from2018
Many many blurays have atmos
Regarding purchasing 4K Discs with Dolby Atmos,
Around Fall/Winter, Warner Bros (among a few other studios) will price their 4K physical media from $10 - $15. That's how I've amassed a 4K collection within the last few years. People just need to be patient and not so "FOMO" with their Collecting.
Exactly! That’s when I make mass purchases, with the occasional pre-order with a VERY select few titles. 🤘
Yeah it's nothing new. WB Atmos titles were always in Atmos on bluray also Paramount. If there isn't Atmos on Bluray it's because they didn't want to use it, probably to push you to buy 4K UHD.
Haha yeah ive been buiyng atmos blu ray for the last 4 years.
There are more blueray movies whit dolby atmos it not strange today.
I've been seeing Atmos and DTS-X on standard Blu-rays for years. But if Atmos is becoming the standard on Blu-ray's, then DTS might as well shut down shop. For some reason, Studios refuse to put DTS-X or IMAX ENHANCED on disc or streaming for that matter. 90% of the Blu-ray's usually come with DTS-HD Master Audio. As we all know, there are thousands more Blu-ray's than 4K disc. This doesn't sound good for DTS or the Xperi corporation.
Yeah, I still see the occasional DTS:X track on a 4K Blu-ray, like when I randomly saw The Croods had one. 🤷♂️ Weird.
Not really new. The first john wick blu ray had dolby atmos back in 2015
Excellent, informative video! The more options the better for consumers. I personally like to buy 4K version if available. You get a lot more in 4K.
Me too, honestly. 😄
Your headphones offset is triggering my OCD.
I like 1080p more then 4k, even on my 85" TV. It looks more natural and more cinematic to me.
As for HDR, I still don't like it. The old TV didn't even have the proper specs to display true HDR. It works better on my new TV, but the colors are still washed out. They are prettier in SDR, they stand out much more.
completely resonates with my views on 4K HDR. 1080p discs look much more better, sharper and punchier on my Sony 85" X95L.
This is nothing new I have been collecting Bluray disc with Atmos tracks since 2014 ( not 4K ) and have atleast 200 titles in Atmos surprised you never noticed this
Atmos is really just data. Bluray has 50+ gb and 4K bluray is 100gb. As long as the bitrate and length of movie is not overly big, you can fit it on the disc. It’s just do the movie companies or directors want to do it. Some don’t. Also some mixes are crap. A well done 7.1 is better than a poorly done atmos mix. Right now, most do atmos as it has become more mainstream with consumers.
was atmos gatekeeped to 4k????
Paid $3.99 for Dune Blu-ray from Redbox
It the movie it had Dolby Atmos on the Blu-ray from2018 so that’s been happening for years, bud
Fun fact : Oppenheimer was blurry in many many spots of the film. Also his use of backlighting was too extreme causing dark scenes while making the outdoor scenes look downright terrible. These faults were not arty attempts to make the movie more interesting, they were mistakes that made the movie unpleasant to watch. His “choice” of quiet dialogue was also a nightmare.
Yes, but to play Atmos you still need a 4K UHD player. A regular Blu Ray player will only play Dolby True HD 7.1.
No. Atmos signal is embedeed into the TrueHD 7.1 codec. If you have an Atmos compatible reciever it will decode Dolby Atmos out of the DolbyTrueHD passthrough.
Technically no blu ray player “plays” atmos as the signal is decoded by your AVR, if your player can do TrueHD your AVR can decode the atmos signal meaning players are irrelevant
that's a huge misconception, all your Bluray player got to do is to send the audio as 'bitstream' which will send pure raw audio codec on the disc to your AV receiver which ca decode the atmos track for you. All Sony and Panasonic standard Bluray players had pure bitstream passthrough audio capability to send via HDMI out.
Like your content but atmos concerns are bloated other formats are just as enjoyable...
