After I watched this movie, my first thought was, “Wow, that was incredible” and my second thought was, “now I understand why Cynthia and Ariana are in tears everywhere and anywhere. I get it now. ME TOO.”

OMG!!! I saw the movie this weekend with my boyfriend who was less enthusiastic and we both loved the film. I agree with everything in your review from the fascinating sets, elaborate outfits, amazing performances, to the long drown out parts that drug this movie to nearly three hours. Overall, I was very impressed and satisfied with this adaptation. My boyfriend knew nothing about it and enjoyed it immensely….so, good job! @Jeanne, your energy is amazing so I will be subscribing and watching more of your content!!!

The stage play is about 2 1/2 hours with an intermission with Act I ending with "Defying Gravity" and Elphaba becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. I am glad that they decided to split this movie in two parts. They are taking their time to give more detailed with story and perhaps add some elements of the book that were not in the stage musical.

I saw Wicked on the West End over a decade ago. I e seen/heard so much of the original Broadway cast. I figured I’d like the movie as it was a musical- though not my favorite. Then again, I liked Cats. I wasn’t familiar with Erivo, and I knew Grande was a pop star but couldn’t name a single song of hers (I’m 56 and don’t have kids!). They were amazing!! I don’t think I can ever see a white Elphaba again. Eviro is perfect. My thoughts on Grande are basically the same as yours- though I probably knew less of her than you. What really impressed was the chemistry between these characters!! The movie depended on this.

I always wanted to see Wicked as I’m a south London girlie who would pass the theatre in Victoria often. Still haven’t seen it on stage but I enjoyed the film, especially how the story forces us to reassess the iconic characters. Cynthia absolutely ate Defying gravity up!

I have to say thank you Jeanne! I never watched the the stage musical of Wicked and I didn’t really know what it was about, so I was on the fence about watching it because I love Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey.
I watched another channel’s review of Wicked that had really nothing good to say about it so I was thinking that I wouldn’t watch it. Then I watched your review and to be honest my taste in movies seem to be closer to yours then the person from the other channel so I decided to watch from your amazing review. I am hooked, completely obsessed with it and can’t wait to watch the next. So again Thank you Jeanne!!! 💚🩷💚🩷

What really impressed was the chemistry between these characters!! The movie depended on this. I never saw Bridgerton and didn’t know Bailey, but he was clearly cast well. Michele Yeoh was fine as MM because she didn’t have to belt any songs, and she seemed suspect, but believable as the character and she looked the part. Character-wise, Goldblum was too Jeff Goldblum for me!

Taking into consideration Kristen Chenoweth’s version of Glinda, what song did you feel Ariana wasn’t annunciating sufficiently? I’m confused by this critique as I can’t think of any point in the movie where she softens her consonants (like she does with her pop songs).
Also, Ariana was on Broadway BEFORE her pop music career so it’s clear she softens her consonants in her pop music because it is a stylistic choice and not a limitation.
Lastly, if you’ve ever seen her on SNL it’s clear that she has acing and comedic chops. So I feel it discredits her talents a bit when you keep on pointing out that she was “born to play this role” specifically because it seems she would probably do well in any role she sets her mind to.
I say this as a person who isn’t a hardcore Ariana fan or anything. Just an observation of critics who seem surprised by her talents.

I saw it on Wednesday. It was incredible!!! Going to see it again soon. I also didn’t realize the Mika song was a cover of the song from the musical until I saw it on Broadway!! Haha. What a full circle moment for Ariana.

Yes, finally an unambiguous win for you and the audience!!!
    🤩
Edit: it pisses me off a little bit, that the 1st major role played by a dsbw in a very long time is a "witch". I expect, the "paper bag" test to be be firmly back in place, for future roles. Im so happy for Cynthia Erivo though. She is SHINING in that role!
Also, did you know, that Fiero is described as "dark-skinned" in the book? He has been wh1tewashed from the get go!
    🙃
That being said, Jonathan Bailey is so swoonworthy! He makes every "ship" looks real!
    🤩

Have to disagree about this being a prequel to the original WoO movie. It’s in the Oz framework, but they are not in the same world of Oz. The Wicked book and movie are as different from the original Oz book and movie as The Wiz. I’m not saying that any of the above are bad usage of the framework, (I quite like them all) but they do not fit together as one story.
