the second act/part 2 will answer all your questions regarding the elixir/why she’s green, nessa, boq, etc and boy i cannot wait for you to find it all out!
I cried the whole time. From the opening fonts to the very end. Oz looked so beautiful. Munchkinland looked kitchity and crafty like the OG version. Every musical number was engaging. As a pro dancer, they was getting down. I just loved it. So much joy, so much whimsy. Going to see it again. The racism, colorism was handled delicately and so accurate. Baby I’ve gone out of the country and I stick out like a sore thumb. The stares, the asking to touch my hair. I cried and cried.
When I went and saw the movie the first time, the theater volume was slightly lower than I should have been. I remember laving the theater loving the movie but not blown away. Then I read an article where the director stated that some theaters had been showing the movie at a volume that was below optimum. So I went to see it again and requested the volume be set at the directors requested volume which was 7. The manager was very nice and said sure . Well let me tell you the appropriate volume blew me out the water . It was amazing!
@ I honestly don’t know, but the article said 7. I remember thinking after I requested it being set to 7, what if that’s lower than it was ? 😂Luckily for me volume was perfect 👌.
The casting was perfection: Ariana was born to play Glinda and her comedic yet heartfelt performance was impeccable! 💖Cynthia really brought the heart , depth & range needed to portray Elphaba…every time she was on the screen I was emotionally invested💚The cinematography, choreography, costumes, score, script & overall direction was MAGNIFICENT. I’m so happy my favorite musical has been adapted by people who CARE & LOVE the material!!!! 💚💖💚🧹. My only disappointment is that we have to wait another year for the explosive second half 😭😭😭
So here's why I'm ok with it being a two-part movie, and if someone disagrees with me all I ask is that you be kind and state why you feel differently in a respectful way, I love Wicked so much; it's my favorite musical and I've seen it live twice. To me, it's such a cultural icon in itself as a musical performance. I saw it the first time when I was young and was completely floored by everything. The imagery, the story, the musical numbers, etc. It was the first time, that I can recall, where I saw a story being told from the perspective of a character as iconic as the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz. That really made an impression on me about villains in stories and their origins and/or their story arcs which is the big question this story poses: "Are villains born or are they made?" So I wouldn't want anything cut out that makes this story what it is and so that's why I'm ok with it. This is why I really can't wait till ya'll see Part 2 given neither of you have seen the original stage musical because there are a lot of things that have already been foreshadowed and referenced to the original Wizard of Oz. Even just what ya'll said about Glinda's character and why she makes certain decision,s especially towards the end, if you go back and listen to her song, "Popular" she's very focused on appearances and she's not used to not getting what she wants so this isn't to say she's the true villain of this story or anything we know in this case the Wizard turns out to be the true villain, but it definitely makes her corruptible I'll say and easily swayed to do things that she's being told are "for good," but ultimately she's being used to further other people's agendas.
The gibberish is from L Frank Baum's original books. The poppies were artificial because poppies are very delicate. On the other hand, the millions of tulips were real.
I saw this at the Thursday showing, and as someone who knows the musical, there is so much clever foreshadowing! It's also just an excellent movie in general!
So glad you both enjoyed it, especially with neither of you having seen the play beforehand. That says a lot about the success of the director and his choices. The play doesn't have near the additional backstory/history of many of the characters and motivations, which the movie was able to add things from the books and show that those creators told John Chu that they wanted in there, but couldn't add because of the length the play would be. So, once you see the play one day, you'll notice that. Part Two is fantastic and has some really great plot twists and turns and does, in my opinion, an amazing job of weaving in the original Wizard of Oz movie and make them both work together. Very creative idea and one of the many reasons I love the musical and, now, the movie. I'm seeing it tomorrow again in IMAX and am looking forward to seeing some of the things that I missed from laughing or crying so much in the first showing.
I think John Chu's superpower is he knows _exactly_ how to spend a budget to get what you want to see on camera. CGI is a great tool but you don't want your entire movie built ten miles away in a cubicle farm. My favorite costumes were Idina and Kristen - I couldn't not look at how the crazy multiple window-blind layers moved on a delay. Some of the dancers in One Short Day had it too. I wanna buy this movie just to go frame by frame and look at everything in the shot.
So I have a question for everyone, including ya'll in the comments section, with the combination of the commercial, global, and critical success of Part 1 of Wicked which I think is fair to say at this point, do you think this is a good sign of the future of Hollywood? For example, do you think and/or at least hope the people in Hollywood will look at this movie's growing success and think maybe we need to pull back and rethink how we've been doing things? And on a separate note, do you think this is a sign of a possible resurgence of both the musical and fantasy genres?
OMG!!❤❤❤ I loved this movie it gave all the feels , attacked themes and the nuance and complexity of the characters . The was no good and bad guy clear cut ~besides the sorcery director 😒. This was about defense of marginalized groups and two different roads to address it . The classic government question of reform vs revolution .
One of my best friends, my mom and I are gonna go see this tomorrow. I’m ngl I’m very very very excited. I’ve been listening to popular on repeat since the soundtrack released last night. I feel like I’m kinda reverting back to my cringy theater kid self. 😂
This movie completely turns the wizard of Oz on its head . The wizard was always a creep and fraud but to then subjugate an entire population and turn the ppl of Oz on innocent citizens that are natural to their world unlike the wizard . The people of Oz are really who were wicked . Elphaba was so enduring and humanized . Glinda grew on me but she was definitely giving the plastics and professor umbridge. Both sorceress have nuance and ironically I think elphaba is more sympathetic. Very mature subject matter , I was horrified by the treatment of the animals 😮. Also can I say the ppl of Oz are horrible . 😂they do not deserve elphaba, I wished we could have dropped Wanda on their @$$😅! Give them that witch ! 🧙♀️
I loved the movie! I saw it with my young nieces (under ten), and boy, was it hard (but fun) to explain. "Why is Galinda called the Good Witch if she's mean?" "Why do they call Elphaba evil if she hasnt done anything bad?" "Why do they think being green is so weird if they have animals that can speak and live in a world of magic?"Why does it matter to them that her skin is green?" What's racism?" "Why is the whole school following Galinda if she's mean and cant do magic?" And lets not even get started with their questions about the Wizard.
Thanks for the review! I’m hearing good things, even from people that thought it was going to be ‘woke’ or ‘girl boss’, so it’s nice to see folks are liking it 👍🏻
The second I saw that jungle/forest I knew Wil was gonna love it 😂😂 I’ve seen the musical 6 times, and while I know it wasn’t a perfect film, it was everything I’ve wanted for the past 15 years. I wept.
You are supposed to not hear a single word when you listen to an operatic song and Ariana actually did a pretty good job enunciating the words. I hope y'all did some research before this review. :/
I’ve never seen the broadway play or read the book… did y’all pick up on during the scene with the mom “cheating” was that THR WIZARD? I thought to myself, that looks like Jeff. They never showed his face… he is a trickster with cheap tricks… maybe the green exliir is from him… am I reaching? And allegedly the lion cub she saved grew to be the cowardly lion 🥹😭😭😭😭
I don't remember her being green because of the elixir in the book, I thought it was just because the wizard was a human from our world and her mother was from Oz and that's how their mixed child came out. I could be wrong, I just don't remember the elixir being the cause.
In the book, The Wizard drugs and r***es her Mother using the green elixir so they definitely made it more of a drinking affair in the musical. To lighten it up.
Wil has never seen the first Gladiator so if we get any extra time we might do both! And we aren't doing reactions to Penguin but Kristin watched it all and we discussed it briefly on our most recent live so you can check that out!
i liked it buuuuuuuut: it could have been one movie. the musical is shorter than this ONE film......also, all the best songs are in this portion (i do like one other song that is in part 2). not looking forward to them stretching out 30 minutes into 2 and a half hours.
They are apparemtly adding some original songs in Part 2. But they wanted to flesh out some supoorting characters and other parts of the story. And the director said on social media he felt he would't be able to do full justoce to the story if thry tried to squeeze or rush everything into 1 movie.
I had subscribed and liked this channel right up to the point you had to desparage the election. Political shills who know nothing of the source material for the topic you’re choosing is lame by its very definition of the word. Oh and get some exercise. Damn.
Defying gravity did something to me spiritually

Does every theater’s audio operate on the same number scale? If so that’s very interesting
@ I honestly don’t know, but the article said 7. I remember thinking after I requested it being set to 7, what if that’s lower than it was ? 😂Luckily for me volume was perfect 👌.

I would bet good money Will is gonna love Glinda's "Thank Goodness" outfit (onset photos have leaked)
The gibberish is from L Frank Baum's original books.
The poppies were artificial because poppies are very delicate. On the other hand, the millions of tulips were real.
ITS SO GOOD ALREADY WATCH TWICE
“Lois, this is so f***ing good.”
-literally me watching again
Sameeee!!!!
I'm watching it again on Monday 😂
Everytime boq came on screen and Kristin screamed was hilarious 😂😂😂😂
Nice of you for giving the movie it's flowers 🌺😊
Just seen it and I loved it Ariana was hilarious in it I need part 2 NOW
I saw this at the Thursday showing, and as someone who knows the musical, there is so much clever foreshadowing! It's also just an excellent movie in general!
As someone who's seen the musical, act 2 is long enough to warrant another movie

For me it didn’t feel like a 2:40 hrs movie lmao it went by soooo quick I could watch more
The way I ran to RUclips to see what you guys had to say 😂
@@megmez 😆🥰
So glad I found your guys channel you remind me of what makes half in the bags banter so good 😍😍

You're totally right about the CGI! And those two dresses! The skirts were mesmerizing
Thanks to Wil and Kristin! 🌈
This episode was great I love when you all are excited! I saw wicked last night and it was amazing! Great cinema for 2024!
I swear I could write multiple dissertations on this musical, but I will try to limit myself in the comment section, lol.
Watching a third time today!
I could’ve watched hours of them just being in Shiz and the young adult drama, romance, etc.

What did you guys think of the ballroom scene?

Loved this review!
Thanks so much!
This movie is fantastic

Right because most of the points they had made no sense
I’ve never seen the broadway play or read the book… did y’all pick up on during the scene with the mom “cheating” was that THR WIZARD? I thought to myself, that looks like Jeff. They never showed his face… he is a trickster with cheap tricks… maybe the green exliir is from him… am I reaching? And allegedly the lion cub she saved grew to be the cowardly lion 🥹😭😭😭😭
Yer, the Les Mis movie felt like, did you run out of money or ideas? What happened?
lmao unfortunately singing fully live was the "idea"
I think the flowers were real, they planted 9 million I heard
There were a lot of real tulips at the beginning in Munchkinland but we meant the rest of them. Like all the poppy bouquets were silk flowers
@ ohhhh! Makes sense lol
Going on Thanksgiving day ❤❤❤
We hope you enjoy it!
It'll be too late... Part 2 might be out by then.
I don't remember her being green because of the elixir in the book, I thought it was just because the wizard was a human from our world and her mother was from Oz and that's how their mixed child came out. I could be wrong, I just don't remember the elixir being the cause.
i haven't read the book, but the elixer is very important in the musical.
In the book, The Wizard drugs and r***es her Mother using the green elixir so they definitely made it more of a drinking affair in the musical. To lighten it up.
@MusicalMiranda82 I remembered him seducing her, forgot he basically roofied her
Hello, nice to meet you, we are waiting for teen wolf season 5 season

👍🏼
Please tell me you’re going to react to Gladiator II and The Penguin series! Love you guys! ❤️❤️
Wil has never seen the first Gladiator so if we get any extra time we might do both! And we aren't doing reactions to Penguin but Kristin watched it all and we discussed it briefly on our most recent live so you can check that out!
I know a person who believes in a Huckster Fraud and they loved the movie. I think the themes went over their head
I fear you are correct LOL

What is this obsession with saturation? 😒
You two didn’t know that Nessa rose is Elphaba’s sister???? The witch of the east? Wow. They give anyone RUclips channels these days. Silly kids.
I had subscribed and liked this channel right up to the point you had to desparage the election. Political shills who know nothing of the source material for the topic you’re choosing is lame by its very definition of the word.
Oh and get some exercise. Damn.
Ew
Okay Doug - if you loved wicked but think these two were wrong, then you don’t understand wicked. Bold to be so bald and so wrong at the same time.
