    I like how the most roast-able aspects of the PC are the somewhat loser-y CPU cooler, the occasionally non-proprietary connectors and maybe the ventilation could be better. But the cooler and the ventilation might even be non-issues with the stock configuration, since the temperatures seem pretty alright. And the PSU isn't even an 80+ White rated IED!
    Plus, it avoids the all-too-common 1-2 combo of "single channel RAM, complete BDSM airflow choking action"...
    For $600 CAD, it seems like a surprisingly well-put together system.

  • @PacketWrangler
    @PacketWrangler 11 месяцев назад +21

    Not really an upgrade though, is it? Upgrade would have been maxing out the socket/chipset that was in it - maybe an 8700k if it was supported by the BIOS - and dropping in a new PSU with adapters. A newer GPU to match the new CPU would have been icing on the cake.

    • @SentaDuck
      @SentaDuck 11 месяцев назад +3

      You can only use 8th and 9th gen using a modified BIOS and modifying the contacts on the cpu. But since this is a Dell, I'm not sure if its possible and the limited power delivery might require sticking some heatsinks to the mosfets. I would have loved to have seen him try to get a 9900k working on it. I was able to upgrade from a 6600k to a 8700k on a Z170 motherboard but its was MSI which is one of the easiest to do the mod on.

    • @josephvahabzadeh1289
      @josephvahabzadeh1289 11 месяцев назад +8

    • @josephvahabzadeh1289
      @josephvahabzadeh1289 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@fleurdewin7958 interesting. The couple of Dell boards I'd dealt with always seemed to use a crippled version of a standard chipset, that locked you in to one particular generation and no further.
      I guess it's different for their server/workstation boards.

    • @SentaDuck
      @SentaDuck 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@fleurdewin7958 officially 7700k is the max, that is the same with my Z170 motherboard, but I can still put a 9900k in it. The modding community has done what intel couldn't, but whether they can un-dell a dell is another question entirely.

    The reason they didn't use the 24-pin on the board was to get rid of the warehouse of power supplies they used for the Optiplex xx20 series/Precision T1700, along with all the front panel crap and chassis. Also, you can use some front panel extension wires to be able to use the factory power button and LED.

  • @zeroturn7091
    @zeroturn7091 11 месяцев назад

    I’m still working on my T1700 AM5 build, and you definitely could solve the front I/O if you think backwards. I used Arduino cables for the power switch to the headers. For USB 2.0, mic and headphones in, I bought a Optiplex 3020 complete front I/O and transferred the guts to the T1700’s housing.
    For USB 3.0 I bought a male to female cable then a 90 degree male to female adapter. The 90 degree adapter is important because I can trim the plastic to get around Dell’s metal clip without damaging my motherboard. So I was able to keep the stock USB 3.0
    The only thing left is to do some wire stripping for the HDD LED indicator to Arduino cables to plug back in to the motherboard.

The case, the original HDD (still connected, because why not, but rarely used) and the POST beeper from 2007 Pentium E budget PC... It's not ideal (that 6600 is choking) but it just sort of happened, 2 dead PSUs, one dead motherboard, then covicryptocalypse, so it became a 5600G build, because that's what I could afford, then a windfall, and I could afford the 6600... That PC (minus the GPU) runs about $300 right now on Dell's refurb store. With sales, it could probably be had for under $200. Used GTX 1650s run about $80 on eBay. So, I can't say $422 for the system is the worst price I've ever seen, but you can definitely do better with a little shopping. Don't think there's any sense in swapping everything out, but maybe a PSU swap (you can get adapters so you can use a standard ATX supply with that motherboard) and a better GPU than the GTX 1650 and it'd be a fine little low end gaming setup.

    You can definitely make the front IO work, if only just the power button. I've always had pretty good luck finding the pinouts of Dell proprietary connectors on the interweb, and you can connect them with breadboard jumper wires. A little janky, but not quite as janky as opening the side panel and jumping the pins with a screwdriver

    Those pieces of vinyl tape applied to the case are usually done by refurbisihing companies. I believe Dell themselves actually does this to machines that they sell refurbished. I used to work with a refurbishing company that did this and those stickers are a pain to do and don't really even make it look better.

    you could for an extra 5-10 bucks get an external power button with or without the io in case your using a pc case similar to the dell or have a broken power buttons. (had accidently broke the solder joints on both the power and reset button on my case)

    This actually is my work PC! Mine is spec'ed with a Xeon, 64gb of ECC DDR4, and a Quadro P4000 though, and I'm pretty sure it came with a higher output PSU (same "no frills" aesthetic, though). It doesn't love CAD models with a couple thousand unique components, but for most stuff it's fine. There's talk of moving us over to laptops, and I kinda hope that once they do I can talk them into selling me my old workstation minus the drives for a song because while the CPU architecture might be a bit old for gaming, the Quadro and ECC make it a pretty spiffy little piece of kit in a pretty reasonable form factor.
    The tape is definitely to cover scratches. Seems like a pretty common refurb tactic.

    I think you can make that locked cpu run at the max cpu boost frequency all-core instead of at 3700mhz; can't remember if it's only on a z series board or not, but I'm sure D*LL has that functionality locked down

    The front I/O issue is probably the most painstaking part of doing parts swaps like this. It took me over 2 hours to do the usb and audio connectors on an old lenovo case. The power button and leds weren't as bad if you use a multimeter in continuity mode.
