Great job! You captured the essence of each beautifully imo. Sick riffs and great recording - always nice to have a demo done by a real recording guy. 🤘
The Mesa has a raw growl that I love with more low end and a little less definition on the notes. The 6505 had more note definition with that honey sweetness to its distortion. Both great amps, my preference is the Mesa
I'm new to high gain amps, i have been leaning towards the Peavey 6505+ in every video. In the case of the mesa, i keep hearing that mid frequency scoop, maybe it works in a mix, who knows.
Rectos are known to have quirks like the mid scoop, you kinda just love em or hate em. Having owned both the 6505+ is the opposite, more mid heavy, but that helps it cut through a mix. Both are great amps but as far as heavy tones go, the peavey can stand toe to toe with the dual rec for 1/3 the price
I use my 6505 for death metal in my band. And I gotta say the 6505/5150 is an amazing amp for mixes. Honestly though it's gotta have the right pickups. Not saying it's gotta be a 500$ pickup. But 10$ pickups will sound awful on a 6505. My suggestion is the dimebucker if you want clarity and play really fast shit. And something like a Duncan distortion or a more normal metal pickup for a good sound
I love both of these amps. The 5150 on Orange is fantastic for punchy thrash riffs. The rectifier has this amazing harmonic character, even at low gain it can ring out as if you have a sustainiac. 1 day I spent hours battling: Rectifier VS 5150 VS Ultra Plus, the 5150 came in last place. You can't dial out that hisssssss. It's not a clean distortion unfortunately.
First of all, great riffs I really dug it. I never have owned a 6505 but I have owned a few 5150s but the one I regretted have sold was the 5150II. I still owned a Mesa Dual Rectifier and I am looking for a 6505II. Yes, the Mesa has a funny fizzy mid that defined old Metallica sound. I love both of them. FYI, I have to say that the boosted version of your recording sounded more defined.
I regret not getting a loan and not buying every single 5150 in site years ago when they were $400-$500 on CL. That would have been a nice investment. Probably some signature Eddie guitars too, but don't know much about them. I did have a 5150 once though. Sold it, at that time because couldn't play it in an apt.
I've never liked the 6505's I've owned and sold through the years. Always sounds to me like a half cocked wah pedal. Love my Mesa's and EVH's. But in your comparison the Peavey outperformed the Mesa in a big way. I'm surprised and confused, lol. Another great comparison. Thanks for your taking the time to do these.
Really they sounded like a half cocked wah to you? But you say a EVH 5150 sounded good. That's weird. Maybe it's some quality control issue or something wrong in setup. Either way glad ya like the 5150
@@guitarandgames1386 Nothing "weird" about it. Peavey 5150's and Fender 5150's sound literally nothing alike. As far as where the mid-range frequency curve is set. If you've truly owned both, then you would know that.
I have a 112 6505+ combo I run through a 412 with 2 v30s and 2 1290s Sheffields and I love it. I want to get something to replace the 1290s with eventually but I like it now.
man I truly just enjoyed listening and it has helped greatly in my decision making. Both are top notch but for me I think the extra mid range the peavey provides may have me hooked.
I have the 498T on 2 Gibsons. Check out the “Metal” videos for my 2011 SG Standard Limited and my Gibson Les Paul Studio 2013. They’re pretty good. Cheers -Ryan
The peavey 6505+ doesn't really need a boost it has gain for days. Rob from Chimaira said he never used a boost with the peavey 6505+ and had a brutal killer defined metal tone.
Depends on the situation... but yeah I wouldn’t generally throw a boost in front of it. But it is one of those amps that if you do or don’t then people put in their 2 cents over it. Cheers -Ryan
I’ve always preferred that 5150/6505 over Measa. There is just too much ‘warble’ in the rectifiers, and something about its mid frequencies causes it to drown it self out in metal/metalcore/hardcore, etc when it comes to anything other than rhythm playing. I can also hear that ‘frying’ tube sound, which kills clarity and makes it sound like a ‘metal’ distortion pedal. Rather than the warmth of tubes. While the Mesa has better low end sustain, it’s incredibly situational - and can often make palm muted stuff sound too muddy/fluffy at times. Of course it can sound good, but no amp should require so much set up, pedal/utility dependency, etc. Otherwise you might as well get a Kemper profiler, etc.
Unfortunately the only other Peavey that I really have any interest in would be the Invective 120. Possibly the JSX, however, that would only because of the Satriani name and I like the front plate design. I would have to find it for $400 or so. Cheers -Ryan
Unfortunately I don’t write my settings down. I adjust them to taste all the time so I’m not sure what would have been going on in this one haha Cheers -Ryan
HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD ROGHT THERE!!! Especially with the whole Tube Shortage debacle paired with supply chain shortages… people want the same price as new if not more for their tube heads. Ridiculous!!! Cheers -Ryan
@@Crypticmaskguitar You got that right! I'm from the states but live up here by Toronto Canda nowdays and people want $2500 for 5150 heads. Mesa Sounds better with the booste, tighter Bass. The Peavey sounds a lot better without the booste! Actually the Mesa with the booste and the Peavey without sound quite close...
My vote - for what it's worth (it all sounds like NOISE to me) is the MESA BOOGIE. It produces that thick, chunky tone (with definition) and immediate response .. best stay with that MB.
I like the peavey better which I never thought I'd say cause of mesa boogies reputation and sound but it sounds to scooped and "Metallica like". I have an evh 5153 an it is a high gain monster. Don't even need a boost. Just switch to the red channel...lol.
This video is so weird for me. First of all it’s great and shows me everything that I’ve wanted to see. But the weird thing is although I thought the Mesa sounded better than the Peavey overall. The mesa sounded so...common. Which made me like it a little less. Seems like everyone uses Mesa boogie these days and I ended up liking the Peavey because it sounded more unique. Idk weird
Not at all weird. Whenever I buy a new amp people ask me to compare it to the Dual Rectifier and a DSL 100HR... either in hopes that there are amps that sound different and possibly better and to hopefully validate their purchase of those 2 amps. Little nuances in amps can really make all the difference sometimes. If what I typed made any sense hahaha I just woke up. Cheers -Ryan
With boost engaged, the recto sounded more scooped, whereas the Peavy sounded fuller in the mid range.
That’s what I love about the 6505
And Thats why i own a marshall

the best shootout I've seen thus far between the two. I like how you added leads to the mix, never see that a lot.
Both amps are legendary classics for metal 👍 love them both !
For sure
The Peavey is the kid jumping in the pond and splashing at everyone around. The Recto is the officer that doesn't tolerate mistakes.
Captured both perfectly. Love both. I'm stuck on which one to buy right now.

Great comparison and sick riffs
gret comparison and really enjoyable playing! thank you for putting this together.
Great playing and amazing riffing, keep it up mate!
Peavey all the way! Mesa was very fizzy in comparison...
Dude do you have albums? You're a god damned groove metal monster!
Dude! Killer riffs throughout the entire video! I’ll take the 6505 all day over the Mesa.
I preferred 6505 both ways. DR way too 'trebly' but sounded much better unboosted.
I own a 120 watt 6505+, and love it ,but I'm crushing pretty hard on the mesa.
I'm sure modding either one , you could get the best of both idk.
so how are you now, ever get a mesa?
Both are beasts but for price I'll take the Peavey . How about you do a video with those two and the Marshall YJM amp ?
Both awesome amps but if I had to choose only one I'd go with the roaring sound of the peavey
