Super Mario Bros. Wonder Custom Level - "High Tide Hoppos"

- I recently had this idea of using Super Mario Bros. Wonder's floating Hoppos, which originally only appear in a space segment, in an underwater level, and this is the result. This level was supposed to be a relatively short and simple pallet-cleanser after my previous level ended up being very large and complex, but clearly that didn't work out.

It's unbelievable how this course has components that were never intended to interact with each other and modified character models and still nothing breaks as if it is an official course. Even the turtle enemys (I have no idea how they're called) were getting scared when Spike Ball Mario was approaching, even though these two elements were never meant to interact. Fascinating.
Wonder definitely has more of this than previous 2D Mario games I've worked with, but even still I did find some level elements that completely ignore each other in the process of making this level. Domino blocks don't fall any slower underwater, and the spike ball transformation goes straight through urchins without defeating them, which is why those don't appear during the wonder effect.
The turtle enemies with the snouts are called Uminokos.

If they interact, they were somehow intended to work together even if they weren't so in the final game. I think people are only surprised about this because the NSMB series was super barebones, but theres nothing impressive here in that sense. Many programming methods and phylosophies naturally lead to objects interacting when you dont expect them to that you sometimes have to actively make them not do that.
@@JardsonJean indeed, people saying this kind of stuff is evidence of Wonder having a bunch of scrapped levels, or even serving as the groundwork for SMM3, don't know what they're talking about

That Waddle Dee that always runs off with a key in its hands would really appreciate this
That is indeed very Kirby, I'm pretty sure Super Star Ultra has something similar to that in Great Cave Offensive.

Very interesting how the Urchins and Hoppos are programmed to interact with each-other despite never appearing in a level together. Really makes you *wonder* if Nintendo intended to have more levels in the final game...
they probably did, I think they scrapped a world to be able to release it earlier

Maybe they just have hard coded attributes like, if bounceable touch bouncy than bounce.
This is probably the best level you've made for this game and probably one of the best water levels I've seen in Mario. Such a great combination with unique interactions between the player and it's gimmicks with spectacular setups, genuinely what a great job.
I'd say this is tied with the spike balls level he previously made
After modding Wonder, I can safely say that I have access to Mario Maker 3 right now lol.
I really hope they do an official game of that one day, I would buy that so quickly

I love that Dolphin Kick isn't required to get all of the 10-coins, that was something I found really annoying in the base game.

Before somebody uses the example that one was behind a fan underwater, you swim fast enough when holding a shell to outpace the current.
As someone who beat the game badgeless, I can confirm that you can get every 10-coin without Dolphin Kick

The is easily the best Wonder level you made. Also, I really thought the wonder effect was going be something with the large Hoppo or even the flipped water, the Spike Ball transformation really caught me off guard.
Imagine Newer Team making an entire mod for Super Mario Bros Wonder, it will be incredible.
I've been excited to see any sign of that since Wonder released.

You should make some kind of course teaching people how to make good mario levels (no pun intended)

This level has a lot of elements, spike balls, hoppos, those pillars you can knock down, and water jets. And in the end they combine for a really fresh feeling wonder effect! I love the use of water jets while mario is rolling around, more speed more!!
The hoppos were my favorite enemy from wonder so I adore this exploration of them. The little goggles you gave them are just incredible.
I almost certain the next Mario Maker will use the Mario Wonder engine, I feel like they added all these interactions you usually wouldn’t see just to prepare for course making for users.
I love the usage of Urchins above water, and the way they interact with Hoppos is even cooler, I also love how Hoppos can be used underwater, and finally the spike ball Wonder Effect being used underwater is really cool, reminds me of when Metal Mario is used underwater in SM64, one change I would've done is create the possibility of losing during the Wonder effect, either due to running out of time, or a few endless pits which you'd jump over by properly using the warer currents
I hope that eventually all these levels can be compiled into a full pack and released 'cause I wanna play them

The way the terrain goes away at 3:15 is super impressive! It reminds me a lot of Yoshi's Island
The event implementation in general is super dynamic and "playful", I love it
really good and creative level! one nitpick, though: it would be way more natural if the way to the wonder section (which is Fantastic, btw) was blocked by a domino rock with a little bump on top, instead of the wonder blocks
Believe it or not, that's actually how I had it set up originally. However, I had to block the domino block both on the bottom and the top to prevent the player from getting through with the drill power-up, which I felt looked really strange, so in the end I decided to use the wonder blocks just like Nintendo did in the original game's spike ball level.
Come to think of it, I could probably put an invisible wall alongside the domino block to prevent the player from getting through with the drill, so maybe I'll revisit the idea.
With all these interactions between enemies and objects that are never soposed to be together make me think there where soposed to be way more levels for wonder
Or maybe due to code saving techniques objects just so happen to interact with one another
Still, its fun to think about I guess

can you make a tutorial about how to use the software to create or edit levels? and complete setup to starting using it?
I *could* and probably will at some point, but the problem is that Fushigi (the Wonder level editor) is still a complete mess at the moment. It lacks a ton of basic features, not to mention its numerous bugs and tendency to crash. I'd love to encourage more people to make custom Wonder levels, but at the moment I don't think it would be worth the effort for most people. Also, if I did make a tutorial today, it might be outdated within a couple of weeks, since Fushigi is still being developed.
The quality of your custom levels just keeps increasing...and that Wonder section had me genuinely, actually giddy with excitement due to how cool it was. Can't wait for the breakdown vid 🥰

Nice level. The beach music's definitely one of the best of the game. It reminds me of a bunch of folks having fun at a beach in real life. The Wonder music you chose also is pretty good. It reminds me of stars putting on a light show in the sky or something.

4:45 What happens if you knew the floor would collapse and jumped over instead?
I have some feedback on how to improve the level.
2:33 Players may jump up without knowing that an urchin would spawn up there from the wonder bud. Players would have more time to react if the bud is placed earlier.
3:20 There is very little room between the Hoppos and the sea urchins? Should the area be made larger?
3:55 Is it possible to swim up fast enough to avoid the urchin? Should the bottom 2 of the 6 water currents be removed?

How many of these interactions are custom? I feel like stuff like the Hoppos being carried away by currents shouldn't be possible normally.
The Hoppos (and even most of the urchins) that appear underwater in this level are always attached to invisible rails that determine their movement.

I added the goggles to their model myself, they're actually the same ones Kirby wears when he's underwater.

Hi rimea, great level as always, i have 2 questions. 1) are the urchins custom or are they in the original game? 2) I have a friend trying to make an smm2 world and is struggling to design desert levels. Any tips?
Sorry for long writing also.
1. Urchins are in original game, though they're bouncy interactions with Hoppos are unused.
2. I honestly don't tend to come up with level gimmicks based on a level's theme, instead I try to find 2-4 elements that have some interesting interactions, and then decide the theme based on that. So long as a level has at least one element that matches the theme, it should be possible to make almost any other element fit alongside it.

Can I just say I appreciate you actually make sure to use the “proper” music for your wonder effects? It’s something small but it’s something that bothers me a lot about other custom levels.

We've seen levels based on Pipe Rock Plataeu, Fluff-Puff Peaks, and Petal Isles. Can you do Shining Falls or Fungi Mines next? And can the levels involve anglefish and tailys?

Make a tutorial on how to download smbw cus I opened up Fushigi but can’t find the game files (basically under preferences, then RomFS Game Path, I put the a folder with the game files but it says “The path you selected is invalid. Please select a RomFS path that contains BancMapaUnit, Model, and stage”) please help!
