    I looked at several camcorders, but ultimately went with a Panasonic FZ2500. Its a video beast. Unlimited recording time. Built in ND filters. Stabilization. 4k @ 60fps. Mic input and headphone out. Lots of video output options. And massive zoom if needed. In short, a bunch of cool features that I wanted. It's my "studio" camera, but it is so much more. I think everybody needs one just to experience the versatility. It's basically a GH4 with a super-zoom lens permanently attached.

    2200 for a camcorder?! oh Jesus idk. especially since its mainly a daytime-sunny camera. maybe if its lowlight capabilities were bomb, then I could justify that.. but if you compare it to a sony a7iii, the sony murders it - especially in video quality since the sony records in 6k and downsamples to 4k

      It's the difference between a recording system that requires attention and attendance and a get-the-job-done camcorder. A camcorder such as this is easy for times when you have zero set up time, or for events that need to give you a consistently good image, not necessarily a great image. Sure, put these in the dark, and there's trouble in Paradise. Everything has compromises. Having the ability to hook up to pro audio is part of the appeal as well; even better is using Sony wireless mics that just hook up so damn easily. I've used Sony and Canon camcorders for a while now for both fun and profit and they are robust and produce a good result without faffing about. One more thing, the ergonomics of a camcorder makes handheld use very easy - zoom rockers are so easy to use and you don't notice how good they are until you don't have them.
      There are many ways to a result. I'm still amazed with the image my little GoPro Hero 6 gives. I'm just happy with how far we've come since the Sony PD150 days.

  • @mixflip

    I am a dad who makes RUclips videos. I've found that I need 2 setups. For shows like shot show I use a dslr for long battery life and a 10mm wide angle lens for all the booth interviews.
    For SEMA I need a 3 axis gimbal camera....period.
    So I'm still using my old Canon 70D for shot show and a gopro hero 4 silver in a feiyutech 3 axis gimbal for SEMA.
    I do want to ditch the dslr though for a camcorder. I'm tempted to buy this sony.

    Now if Sony will ever come out with a successor to the NEX VG-900 that has similar features. That was a GREAT camcorder. It was A full frame interchangeable lens camcorder. It was a low light beast. It was way ahead of its time. Unfortunately for Sony most do not like camcorders.

  •  5 лет назад +1

    Onwe big advantage that you didn't cover. No recording limitation or interruption. As vlogger and RUclipsr we might have forgot since we don't record long lenght clips. But to record a complete show and have a good studio cam... that would be better that a DSLR.

    This is so crazy cause I literally pulled out (2 months ago) an older Sony HandyCam HDR-PJ790V and attached a mic (Rode) and thought it was awesome. I get so caught up with the latest tech/gadgets that I completely forgot about the camcorder devices. Don't get me wrong, latest products are phenomenal but HandyCams are still great too. This video reminds us (well at least me) that you can create anything (commercial, movie, news and etc.) using camcorders. Thank you and keep up the great work.

    I have a Fuji X-T3 and over a dozen lenses, but I also picked up a used Sony AX100 for Au$1,250 (roughly US$875). It is virtually the same as the NX80 without the handle and with a single SD slot. Just like you said, it is the easiest camera to use.
    I splashed out for the Sony wireless lav kit and the Multi Function shoe adaptor. This allows for cable free wireless mic usage and you can choose to buy the single channel or the dual channel mic kit. Yes, they are not cheap, but boy do they add value! You can also use them with any other camera too.
    The only other recommendation other than a good size SDXC card(s) is the largest genuine Sony battery.
    Camcorders also don't have the pesky 30 mins recording limit, so they are great for recording events, talks and conferences. If you really need XLR then you can buy a chepo dual channel pre-amp, but seriously, why would you? Like you, you can attach a Rode Videomic Pro, or an afore mentioned wireless kit without going down the XLR route.
    Oh, and if you put a shoe mounted LED video light, you are really rockin'.

    As a dad myself, I always have problems fitting everyone into the group video. The camera has a 29mm-348.0mm equivalent lens and that’s not enough when I’m shooting in tight spaces. I think it would be great if you could recommend or do a feature on screw-on wide angle converters. I’ve bought one but was sorely disappointed and threw it away. It was 0.7x wide but 2/3 of the image around the center became soft and had the purple fringes. It also made zoom useless because the camera wouldn’t focus at anything other than full wide. I believe thousands of dads around the world need a good quality wide angle lens that they can screw onto their cameras

    Add a Dad + a Camcorder WINNING post - Thank you for taking the time to review. It's a bit like doing a review of an RV/ Camper Van - Us Dad's love the idea but the use we would get might raise some questions from the wife! lol. I LOVE the fact that Sony are still developing tech and using it in camcorders plus conventional 'photo' cameras and the NX80 is an entry point for their pro series which at the top end have interchangeable lenses and in between have G lenses. For events and weddings I would love to have one in the bag, but my A7 with a bag of lenses, monitor, lights etc gives me better flexibility - plus the A7 is soooo upgradable for lens range once funds become available etc. BUT I would still like an NX80 as a gadget if I could sneak it into the house :-)

    My main video camera is actually a Canon camcorder.
    I must admit, its a great toy to own, I am glad I have one.
    I bought a camcorder cause I mainly shoot sports.
    The results I get are fantastic.
    For audio, I use the RODE stereo video mic Pro, the two in combination produce very high quality video.
    For best results, I use a tripod although the Canon has very good image stabilization, especially at full zoom.
    I have never used my camcorder for vlogging, its just a tad too heavy for that.
    What I like most about my camcorder is you pretty much just turn it on, and you're ready to go.
    To be honest, I totally enjoy the freedom of using my tiny action cams. You can capture plenty of useful video with action cams.
    But when you're going for quality where only a larger camera can do the job, I am always happy I have my Canon camcorder to take with me.

    Honestly man, I liked the image quality of the Sony camcorder more than whatever you recorded with indoors. It was a bit less harsh to my eyes. Cooler perhaps. The other thing that *seems* like it could be a benefit is the XLR handle kinda makes it look more “pro”, like if you were out trying to do work as a stringer videographer. Ya know, news camera or documentarian on the scene. Great review!

    I can't see noise at all @7:48 for the indoor shot. Perhaps RUclips's algorithms compress out all the noise? The indoor footage looks great so I'm assuming the noise straight out of camera is still really fine and minimal.

    Best review of the NX80 I've seen, and I love your style Gary. Thanks for all the hard work putting this together. I recently started shooting our trailer sailing adventures. There is no way I am going to risk my high-end DSLR bodies & glass to shoot in a salt-spray filled environment - unless it was for a commercial job. Camcorders are not perfect but they are fantastic all-rounders - especially for home movies - and I don't understand why they are so out of fashion. I have a Sony FDR-AX53 & it generally works brilliantly for home movies. The lack of manual control is very annoying, (XLR jacks are missed too) hence I am upgrading to either the PXW-Z150 or the PXW-Z90 series to take it to the next level.

    Great GREAT review! I use a Sony CX900 now for my RUclips videos and am looking for a 4K upgrade. This NX80 is the exact same form factor as the CX900, but apparently with vastly improved features. I was considering moving over to a DSLR, but all the rigging and contortions that are required for video on still cameras sent me back to the camcorder. I shoot outdoor train videos mostly so I don't have much use for "bokeh" or low-light sensitivity to get Buffy and Biff cutting the cake by candlelight and all that stuff that DSLRs do so well. I want a run-and-gun video machine and this looks like it'll be my choice. Plus, $2300. is a good price for a camera this good. Thanks!

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 5 лет назад

    Camcorders are definitely the best way to go for video, but for vlogging the AX53 is much better than the NX80 because of the sensational BOSS stabilisation, faster lens, it is lighter, and less than $1,000. You lose the built in ND but a variable ND on the front is actually better than a 3 step ND when it comes to smooth adjusting for radical changes in light such as walking from indoors to outdoors. Camcorders got a bad rap because of those terrible amateur ones dads used to own, but they were very different to the current prosumer camcorders that have really stepped up their game and are very enjoyable to use. I have the AX100 in addition to the AX53, but dream of using the NX80 eventually. As a university student it is not easy saving up, but I am working on it :)

    • @garethonthetube
      @garethonthetube 5 лет назад

      stig I meant that the maximum iris (f2.8) is only available at the wide end. As you zoom in this falls back to f4.5 as previously mentioned. This is necessary to keep the lens more compact. For it to be able to achieve f2.8 at maximum focal length it would need to be a lot larger. Of course if you set the lens to f5.6 it should stay there throughout the zoom range.

    About noise in low light, if you tweak the Picture Profiles you can get a very good low noise image, even on a 21dB gain.

    I use a Sony AX53 with Rode Videomicro and it's a really nice for outdoors content. Lots of times it can be found on sale for 800ish. For just pure making video content it's really hard to beat. Plus not that heavy and compact. Not sure I would pack a NX80. Looks a bit much for my pack and hard to justify the cost at this time. For me anyways. I did spend the 35 bucks for a B&M digital clear filter to protect the lens and flaps. Wouldn't survive the woods without it. Nice video.

    The main reason i don't lik camcorders is because of the depth of field. I bought one back when i used to shoot with my T7i, before i upgraded to my EOS R. I like the attachments you can add on, but depth of field pulls in the audience. As well as i shoot primarily low light. So a 1inch sensor hurts. The M50 canon is a 1/4th the price with better low light.

    The image quality is totally different from a mirrorless, it's like it gets an anti-aliasing or something, generally a digital processing!
    But in the end its for a different purpose! Those cams are epic for live-streaming senarios with multi-cams. The controls and the zoom are coming in handy in such projects where with a mirrorless you would need a power zoom lens , batteries etc and the cost could get 4 times of the sony nx80!

    I believe that ISO on digital cameras is actually gain. It's still called ISO to add continuity from the old film cameras. So NX80 is correct on calling it gain. DSLR probably call it ISO because photographers are used to it. You are not actually changing the light sensitivity of the film/sensor.

    Nice review enjoyed it thanks! Everyone has different needs for me I use the AX-700 basically the same camera as the NX80 and a high end DSLR at the same time. I shoot video and still shots at basically the same time so I can dedicate each camera to a single use works best for me. On noise in low light if that happens there are a couple of great post production filters that remove all of the noise and keep the quality so any noise has never been a problem. Have shot a lot of outdoor night video with the AX-700 and it looks fantastic. Also you did not cover the Sony color profiles that allow you to customize your color this works great. Have had the camera for a year and it has been perfect.

    If you want the 800 dollar little brother, try the FDR-AX53. It has 30p 4k but lacks some of the built in nd filters (still has the thread so you can add your own) and xlr mounts (but this is one of the few times I genuinely believe you'll be fine with the built-in mic if you're just vlogging. Everything else is pretty fantastic and at the same price point as a lower level DSLR plus mic and a few good lenses

  • @pwolkowicki
    @pwolkowicki 4 года назад

    We don't like handycams because they have(or had) much less options compared to stillcameras, and they are much more expensive. I.e. I have an old mirrorles from 2013 that can film in 1080p 60p, my Sony HDR-CX115 from around the same era can only do 1080 50i(and only, as I live in PAL region. I should have an option to choose NTSC over PAL with PAL as a default), and I don't even have an option to reduce it to 25p (or it's really difficult to figure it out). My mirrorles can do both 50p and 60p, my camera can only do 50i which is annoyance). It has a nice slow mo of 240fps, but only for 3 sec. My mirrorles has 1080 60p which I can easily slow down to 25 or 24, or can even do 120fps(or so) in 640x480 for much longer. Also my old Fujifilm Finepix HS10 can do 1000fps (very low resolution). Unfortunatelly the Fuji has no control over movie settings, and still it's 1/2.3 inch sensor is much bigger.
    BTW, I'm refering to:
    Samsung NX300M, Fujifilm FinePix HS10, and Sony HDR-CX115e, but even newer cameras still have interlaced videos and lover than 2Mpx sensor size upscaled to FullHD, and the information about it is hard to find.
