I used to play football for 9 years before I started running… i completely stopped footy and just focused on running, then one summer I was asked to play a charity match about 5 years ago… it absolutely broke me for about 2 weeks 😅 it used a completely different set of muscles and the ache afterwards was so intense, I couldn’t do any sessions for a week!! So yes, I completely agree with your statement there haha
Ha ha. Exactly that! I played football with my kids during Canadian thanksgiving. 20 minutes of play during which time I passed the ball no more than 10 times. My right groin was tight for weeks! (Same with my back at the moment after XC skiing - at what point does the cross training become dangerous?!). :) (What position did you play? I’m guessing a Peter Crouch-esque striker).
@ I think cycling is the safest cross training… other than that, everything else should be avoided haha! I was a winger believe it or not… like a sprinting giraffe down the wing! Faster than everyone but with no coordination 😂
Glad you had fun at Louise. Three consecutive days of skiing will hurt if you’re not used to it! :)). Living here you definitely have to do something in the winter outside when conditions make it difficult to run and it’s great to get off the treadmill. Like you say - the more often you ski the legs will adapt to the cross training. I know a lot of runners who use XC as a major part of their training in the winter with the high cardio and aerobic benefit it gives. I look forward to watching your build up to the half marathon :) PS I must’ve been NOT too naughty as Santa left me a pair of Craft insulated wind proof running leggings - been tested and they are amazing :)) 😂
I took a downscale week myself, a rest day (first since Chicago recovery) and no doubles this week. Next 2 weeks are focusing on my 1-3min domains which I haven't trained in nearly 2 years...should be "fun". I did find a Boston 2025 jacket under the tree and a new pair of adidas race shorts. I'm told a pair of Novablast 5's would have been there too if Asics would damn well released the damn shoe in Canada already! LOL
Love this! It’s the obvious week to take it easy for a bit. :) Ah man ASICS really are dropping the ball. You can’t get the Superblast 2 for love nor money either!!
Your channel is one of a few that gets me hyped whenever there’s an upload. Huge inspiration for me… specially now that I hurt my leg and had to stop running for a while 😢
Thank you so much!! I love hearing all of this except the injury part. You need a Tyson!! Hopefully you’re back running soon. It’s tough to have to do without it. Feel for you! All the best for the holidays and the new year!
I have had that issue with the tongue on trainers it's such a pain.its great when they amend it on next version. Altra torin 5 to 6 made a huge difference. As always love your training update and agree about how the body reacts to non running activities.
Always interesting and inspiring. Think I will have to bite the bullet and get some x-Country kit. At 7:26 you are running on a (not that deep) snow covered track, what shoes are you using? Thank you. M
Ingrid Kristiansen did a lot of XC-skiing in the winterseason and she had no problem running fast despite this crosstraining😅. But she was a very promising XC-athlete as well until she went all in running...
Oh don’t get me wrong. I think it’s amazing training. Paula Radcliffe did the same thing. But I was SORE for days afterwards. Which probably means (a) it’s very good for me and (b) I need to do more of it. I just need to make sure I don’t do it the day before a fast workout. Ingrid is a legend!
@global-runner Sure I am well aware how hard XC-skiing is with bad technique, its brutal! I met Ingrid & husband just before Christmas on a gathering held in Oslo. She has participated in a quite popular running podcast the last year. And my girlfriend gave me a threshholdtest at her home"labatory". Will be fun to hear her opinion upon my training!
@ And mine technique is the worst!! :) That sounds amazing. I’d love to hear what she says! (And what a great present - you need to hang onto that girlfriend!). :)
Yes lake Louise is high!! It’s a great question. I changed the stimulus rather than rested. I fell ready to run but maybe I should have rested on Wednesday rather than do 30 mins. I’ll keep an eye on things and take a full day or two if I’m feeling overworked or stale. Thanks for commenting!

Craft make some great winter gear!! I’ll bet they are warm!

All the best for the holidays and the new year!
It's been fairly mild out my way as well. Dense fog for most the week and a constant drizzle. Very unusual, but I'm not complaining.
Cheers.
That sounds like more what I’m used to from England. I’m happy for the milder weather in Canada. This time of year can be brutal!
and back to the grind...
@@hermytools it was great to take that week though. It doesn’t feel like a grind - I’m keen to get back at it!!

@ Maybe it just takes some getting used to but it’s a strange feeling!
@ Thank you!! I was wearing the Puma Velocity. Superb grip. (The video is a bit washed out but they are a yellow pair)

Looks like you got in some altitude training too. Do you think you've gotten enough rest this week though?
