As you know, my camper is tiny. I don't have all of the same things to check as you do. When I had a 13 ft Scamp, I thought it was latched onto the hitch correctly, and I even put a pin lock in it. I drove it off the grass onto the road, and it slammed down onto the road, because it had come off the hitch. From then on, even in my current tiny camper that has a 6 by 9 ft box, I always, always, crank it back up after hooking everything up. If it is not latched correctly, it will come right back up off the hitch. If it is latched correctly, it will try to lift the car, and that is when I know that everything is okay. So this is my version of your tug test that would work for any travel trailer that isn't a fifth wheel.
You can get little GPS trackers to attach to items, like a bike. My dealer said most people don't get annual inspections. Lifetime warranties die when you do not get an annual inspection.
The sliding hitch for a short bed is good advice. However, we have been pulling 5th wheels, gooseneck livestock trailers, & Gooseneck construction trailers with shortbeds since 2004, and haven't had a problem. (knock on wood). We have, however, ruined tailgates going over cattle guards in the National Forest. If it looks a little steep we now stop. lower the tailgate, drive over very slowly, and then close the tailgate when the whole rig is across.
CAT Scales at truck stops have scales - and an easy downloadable app for your phone. You can do the weigh, pay and get results right on your phone. (Watch a video)- weigh the whole thing together and you can go again after your park your 5er with just the truck and reweigh. The difference will give you your PIN weight (the weight placed on your truck when you connect) and your total weight.
Hi! I’m a sister believer. I hear you are trying to reach 10,000 subscribers. My husband has you on, so, I decided to support you. ❤ I’ll be praying for you both. I just finished getting healed from my back spasm- 2 weeks 😢. I completely feel your pain. Blessings
Thank you so much for your support! We really really appreciate it! 😊 Thank you for the prayers and we will also pray that you stay pain free from your back spasms too! Thanks for watching! ~ Shion and Matthew
The problem with the water filters is, they will filter out dirt and sediments, but not necessarily contaminants that can make you sick. Those are much more expensive and it’s not just those little Camco ones. RV filters are not created equal. We’re having a water softener put in and I’d like to have something that filters the contaminants-I don’t think the built-in one in our motorhome is enough . Do you know of anything we can add that’s small and not pricey?
We use the clear20 water filter with a dirt guard attachment that goes with it. We also have a Brita water filter that we use for drinking water and cooking. We have the links in our show description if you would like more information on those products! Thanks for watching! ~ Shion and Matthew
Totally agree with your advice on towing. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Scares me to see all the ads for "half ton towable". A good source for info on this is Big Truck Big RV channel.
Great video! The online forums are so full of bad advice as well. A couple more for you... 1) "You don't need a TPMS for your tow vehicle" is just crazy bad advice. I use mine to watch tire temps even more so than the pressure. Blowouts can destroy your RV or even cause an accident. 2) "You don't need to change from rubber to metal valve stems when adding TPMS sensors." The stem will eventually blow as the metal sheath inside the rubber stem expands and contracts at different temps than the rubber stem itself. Add a TPMS sensor on top of that, which causes the rubber stem to flex, and they'll blow in even less time at some point. Put metal valve stems on all RV tires... BONUS: 3) "The factory rubber valve stems on Sprinter-based RVs with steel wheels are fine." No! The rubber stems are rated to only 50 psi but, due to weight, you'll be airing them up past that, perhaps between 65 and 80 psi. Either go with aluminum wheels (all 6 tires) or replace the factory steel wheel rubber stems.
The first thing I bought to protect my travel trailer was a Proven Lock. Yes, it is expensive, but, so was my trailer. I love my trailer and want to have it a long time.
We did research and the Berkey came up short on integrity with their research & transparency. We’re going to get a Brita system. We bought a lock for a surge protector after a man pointed it out (did it in a really nice way). We’ve been very thankful we have a long box. Especially now that we need to put our bikes (human powered) in it.
Good advise, I will wipe down the water spigot with Clorox wipes before hooking up the pressure regular. We also use a 2 stage 0.5 micro pre filter system with a 16,000 grain water softener. Then a post 2 stage 0.5 micro filter in the whole house filter canister. The 0.5 micro pre filter system that we use does not reduce or restrict flow, only contaminants.
oh my gosh, i am not an RVer any longer ... but that is all BAD advice. people dig and find out things for yourself. Thanks so much for sharing this and the things to watch out for. AND yes even have an inspection done for an RV from a relative, it's so important.
The water pressure regulator is seriously needed for grand design RVs, but does apply to many others as well. They have faulty plumbing in them that is not up to standard and I want to say grand design has over 20 bad connections in it throughout look up, rigor RV repair, plumbing. Videos on RUclips. Another issue with the water in a lot of parks is that it ties into their irrigation systems. So every time zones turn on and off you can get serious spikes and pressure hydraulic. I was sitting at a park one time in my lawn chair and I watched the sprinkler zone in my area turn off in the very instant that turned off. It literally blew my hose right off the faucet valve immediately got a heavy duty brass regulator.
Oh wow! We have noticed water pressure regulates at some RV parks we have been too as well! Thanks for sharing that info with us and thanks for watching too! ~ Shion and Matthew
We are strong advocates of a tug test too! We agree about locking things up too! Thanks so much for sharing and thanks for watching too! ~ Shion and Matthew
Great advice for people. We use the water pressure regulator, lock our surge protector, use a water filter and Berkey and my husband wears gloves then hand sanitizer.
Great to see you guys and your down home honest delivery of somewhat uncomfortable subjects was awesome. We are class A people but I really learned a lot about towables that I did not know! Travel safe and we will see you this fall? Thomyt
Wow! I want to thank both of you for this informative and honest video. Your sharing of various things most RVer's will come across along with how to avoid, is priceless!!! In addition, your recommendation of buying a H20 pressure gauge is well received. Looking forward to hearing from you 2 again! Best regards, Bob from Prescott AZ
Great points - agree with them all. We don't have a 5er so learned a few things on that if/when the day comes.... So true on the max towing advice from the dealer - most trucks these days can tow a lot more than they have payload for, and that is frequently used by dealers the sole metric. We have had advice just to keep the black tank valve open when at a FH site - fortunately didn't take that.
Glad ya'll didn't take the advice of leaving the blank tank open. We have heard that can lead to the dreaded pyramids! 😱 Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching too! ~ Shion and Matthew
A few years ago we found a couple different spreadsheets from RUclips to calculate if your truck has adequate capacity ratings for your towable. They had fields for all the rating specification numbers for the truck and trailer, estimares of cargo in the truck, trailer empty and maximum weights, and one of them included individual axle specs for the truck. Fill in the fields and it calculates if you are overweight for the truck. I think one was from "Keep Your Daydream" and another was from "All About RV's". Not sure if the spreadsheets are still out there, but they seemed pretty good.
We've had our 5th wheel and short bed truck for ten years. Popped the back glass twice. After second breakage got the Superglide (like yours). Very happy I have it now. You still have to pay attention. All good points in the video.
We are sorry you had to experience that! We have been really happy with our SuperGlide automatic hitch. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching too! ~ Shion and Matthew
I had a spray bottle of 50/50 Bleach/Water and sprayed Everything, Water or Sewer related. Connections and areas around them Before Touching even With Gloves!
Spot on with the bad advice & to call it bad advice! We can't wait to find the Fiat Truck! 😂 But gloves are a must, locking your stuff up is a must & smart to get an expectation!!
Well done. You have given great advice! We all are different when it comes to things we use and haul around, from hardly anything (week-end warriors) to full timers that carry tool chests and full complement battery operated power tools, generators, etc. just be aware of loads.. it kinda grossed me out when someone was washing out their sewer hose… so wrong! Now I’ll start cleaning the spigot. Great content!
I'M GONNA GET SOME STICKERS MADE THAT SAY :DAY SLEEPER, DO NOT DISTURB" AND STICK IT TO THE TRAILER DOOR. 😅. BAD GUYS DON'T ENGAGE WHEN THEY THINK SOMEBODY IS HOME.
Im a germphobe, and a type A choleric personality. So if i saw someone jamming a sewer hose up against/touching /close to a site water tap, i wd fling open my door, and call out, oopsie, thats NOT sanitary! people will b drinking from that tap eh!!! and i dont care about their response either. when i see people jam their water bottle neck up inside a water tap spout, i then say OOOHHHH thats how germs are spread, yikes! etc. Once at my hubbys company bbq i watch a guy dip a chip in some dip, bite it in half, then try to dip the other half of the chip back into the dip! I quickly covered the dip bowl with my hand and quipped no double dipping! it spreads germs! he looked surprised, i got him a paper plate and spooned some dip onto the plate and handed it to him. he took it and i said, much easier this way, and germs are not spread. my hubby laughed. ya i know, i can be as bold as a lion, but a bold demeanor is very useful in tracting, ie handing out/placing tracts. I have a 98% success rate at it....
Y’all should do a video on best practices for setting up and breaking down your whole electric/water/sewer/cable/internet when you get to a campsite. Showing gloves, what to wipe, what may be contaminated, etc. Thanks for a great video!
✌️🙂. Hey guys. Thanks. Good advice. 🖐️😉. Good call with the water, I've been watching the News also. When I get out there I do hope to run into u all. Yes, we aren't in Kansas anymore. I feel if I blink to long something will be missing or broken. U guys always get me laughing. Thanks. 😊🌈
I learned the hard way to be sure and connect your water filter downstream from your pressure regulator. Never connect it directly to the water spigot like I did. I made this mistake once at the Valley of Fires CG in NM. The water pressure was 90 psi which caused our Clear 2O pre-filter's lid to crack, like yours did, spraying water everywhere. Never again.
Shion is still actively looking for another full time job. She has found a part time job and Matthew has also found a part time job in addition to his full time content creation job! Thanks for the prayers! Keep them coming! 🙏 Thanks for watching too! ~ Shion and Matthew
On tow vehicles. There is one truck that everybody really does need to avoid like the plague that is the ram 2500 and I’m not really sure what year it started but they put coil spring rear suspension on them. I know it’s controversial I get it. This vehicle needs to be avoided at all cost. Yes it is a three-quarter ton but it has a very very low payload rating and does not have the stability that it should for towing the loads. Short of that any 3500 or F3 50 F450 preferably a dually Will be more than enough for most people to haul in tow anything.
Did you know that Heartland RV produced the brand "Bighorn" back in 2004 with a 'patented front cap' that allowed a SHORT BED truck to achieve a 88 degree turn WITH A FIXED 5TH WHEEL HITCH. There are a lot of factors that go into picking the right 5th wheel hitch to go WITH the 5th wheel trailer......they are intertwined and GOOD ADVICE from an experienced RV sales person is invaluable. So making a blanket statement of, "everyone should get a automatic sliding hitch", is wrong. Sorry, but experience counts here.
IF YOU HAVES A RUclips CHANNEL AND YOU SHOWS YOUR RV TO EVERYONE EVERYWHERES, DON'T SHOW EVERYONE WHERE OR WHAT YOU HAVES & WHERES YOU KEEPS IT ! YOU CAN JUST I JUST STORE STUFF IN THE CABINETS ECT.. IT'S A SMALL SPACE AND YOU DON'T HAVES TO SHOW EVERYONE EVERYTHING !
Another bad advice is. ...its ok to leave your awning out when you're not around camp, or even at night when you're sleeping. Weather can change at anytime. ✌️❤️
