I must not be the average RVer, I put about 10,000 miles a year on My 2018 Thor Venesian 40a diesel pusher, I take about 12 to 15 trips a year and we love the RV life!!!
One of my books is “How Being A Nomad Saved My Life”. I’ve been fulltime on the road for 9 years and still going strong … on … wait for it … social security! I love my life. KOKO!
I remember moving forward adventures said the same thing. Their number one piece of gear was a first aid kit, GPS to prevent from you from driving into bridges with low overhangs and a decent fire extinguisher.
Shop at a small, family-owned rv business. We bought our used pop up camper through a one-store-only ( not a chain of shops) family rv dealer. They resold it on consignment last year after we bought our tiny,( 16' hutch to bumper), new retirement camper through a different family-owned dealer. Have had zero issues with either unit.
Jayco manufacturers still use all wood cabinets in their units starting at 79,000 bucks. I worked for a manufacturing company (1972-1975) We could only finish about 12 units per week quality built.( was on a good week)
As far as them telling you that your car can pull it. I have a1970 vw. Bug. And yes it can pull it. But the law says I must be able to stop it in a straight line while skidding to a stop It’s not if you can pull it it’s can you stop it safely!( 55 mph to zero )
Thank you for not bashing the Amish. My mother grew up Amish ( Ohio) . Guess we are above average when it comes to camping. We are just weekenders here in Ohio . Our camping season is usually from April through October. 16- 18 trips planned each season! Thank you for all you do. Love your channel and what you guys stand for❤
@@RVOddCouple we have always adopted rescued collies. Recently adopted a collie that was rescued from an Amish farmer ( puppy mill ) at a year old . After all the adoptions we have done and some had bite history’s and real physiological scars from physical abuse ,,, this poor dog is emotionally crippled . He is totally sweet no aggression issues … but terrified . Of EVERYTHING. Did not eat normal and had to learn how to drink water because they use hamster bottles attached to the cage . 1k$ later for a animal behaviorist,,,, , a case of shingles for me , and after joining a support group for people that rescue puppy mill dogs …. We have a loving and friendly but still neurotic with many triggers dog . It has been a heartbreaking and heartwarming year watching this dog grow . Granted many of the mills may be Mennonite not Amish . But I can’t drive through Lancaster PA anymore … I literally cry when I see the signs at the bottom of the drive to the barn that’s says “Doodles for sale “. The way they treat these dogs … they consider them livestock … most folks don’t treat livestock this way … It’s messed up .
Amen, you guys are exactly right, pure honesty! The one that gets me the most is the old RV industry ad stating "RV'ing is the cheapest way to travel!". The only way that could be true is if you camp in a tent and eat weenies and beans every night!
Great to see you guys! I’ve been MIA from RUclips due to the second shift job I took last year in the city. Don’t have a whole lot of time for much anymore. excellent advice, as usual! I laughed at your campground comment at the end!😂 May God continue to bless you both, richly.
Research is the key, know what you are in for and gain as much knowledge as possible prior to jumping in. it really helps to be handy as you will need to overcome issues no matter if your unit is brand new or not. We belong to some FB groups and see some of the posts and wonder if these people just bought what the salesman told them and never did a lick of research. its not only a disservice but it can be dangerous. Knowledge is power and thank you for sharing yours.
Wow, you hit the nail on the head. Number one for me was, oh no problem pulling the trailer with your hauler. Yup, had to upgrade the vehicle. Also, had some other lies I fell for. Thank you two for putting up this video.
Good points. I certainly recognized immediately the salesman telling me my truck would handle a rv WAY bigger than truth! That really kills my trust in a salesman 😢
Well John and Mercedes, researched and procrastinated for over a year till I found a unit that I wanted. It was a kiss unit "keep it simple stupid", had it inspected by 3rd party, so far nothing major, yes, I understand stuff will break or get loose. I do plan on only 2 or 3 times a year, so I did not need all the bells and whistles for myself and my two 4 legged companions, they both love riding in the truck. See ya sometime this fall.
I live in a mobile home park. We had a well water supply. The federal government has adopted water regulations for community type wells. So before you do any expansion you may want to look into the water situation. The government requires a water engineer to be hired full time to check water compliance with regulations. Just sayin.
I live in Elkhart county, IN so I got quite a chuckle from the “Amish quality” comments. For every Amish employee in the factories, there’s six meth-heads, lol. And there is no magical craftsmanship gifting in the Amish community; they are regular people like the rest of us.
I once towed a 26 ft with an AMC Hornet all over NYS, including the Adirondacks. To quality...I love my 2002 National from Lazy Days. I left on my 1st trip with nothing. Left off a little countryside dealer in a snowstorm at the end of January. I think I stopped at every Walmart and Camping World looking at everything I thought I "needed". Glad I'm a cheap ass. Boy! The stuff they have. Been camping all my life. I can see newbies grabbing it up. 😊 Kathryn B WNY
I learned my lesson on buying new RV's. I would rather buy used (in decent condition) and repair/recondition it myself. My last RV cost me $0.00 (due to some very creative horse trading) and have been very happy.
Very good point I referred to it as the honeymoon. It's exciting wahoo. Next thing you know it sits there most of the time. Then I would think some smart frugal shopping maybe even some flipping
I was going to buy a travel trailer when I retired. Also I was going to retire this year. However, I have agreed to continue working through another project (about 2 more years). AND, I took a missions trip to Guatemala. Now I think I will spend my travel funds going to Guatemala, helping folks discover a deeper relationship with their creator and teaching them skills to improve their greatly impoverished situations. However, should I decide to buy an RV, I will use your advice.
Thank you for this video! LOVED IT and def got quite a few laughs, but your “lies” were SPOT ON. one other thing, that just because you (us!) took forEVER to find the “perfect RV”, you will STILL have a multitude of issues to deal with, whether something is missing or repairs. We took 15-20 years to finally buy our first (Jayco tent trailer) and then another five getting our motorhome. Don’t take as long as we did, because you miss all that time camping, when you’re just going to have expected problems anyway! Much love to the three of you, Virginia
As full timers who just bought a used TT Elite connections membership early this year we have already saved enough to have paid for our initial membership and yearly dues vs what we would have paid in cash, everything from here on out is a bonus for us. There are some things about TT that i dont like but its still been worth it for us.
Brilliant video. My favorite: your Prius can tow this. After years of camping in my Prius . . . Had another cross country trip planned. Considered buying an RV. Realized I like hot showers, flush toilets, kitchenettes. Priced it out. Driving and stopping at friends and motels was not only cheaper, but so much more comfortable. Still have my Prius Cocoon Camper just in case.
I'm so glad I came across this. This was extremely helpful, as I would have never considered the cost of financing all those warantees over so much time when they would run out way before they were ever paid for! So much good info here. Thanks guys!!
So true, I was so excited to get started on my great adventure I started spending money on the stuff that I still have not used. Especially when I never ever did get to take a long trip.
We bought out camper from a big RV place in Western NC that had just been bought by Camping World. The finance guy wanted us to buy a VERY expensive maintenance contract for a new camper. I looked at him and said "do you think I'm stupid or something? -no.". Very red and a little mad he tried again. "I said NO", was my reply. And, we have never needed to take it back, very luckily on our side. It is a 2016 so we may be due. Hopefully have not jinxed us. We're going on a 7 week trip to Glacier NP in June from Tennessee.
Great video very honest and informative. Thank you !👍 Been watching RV YTs since 2020 and still not ready … going to try renting this weekend hope it works out … will see . I hated being a Landlord when I had a beach house rental . DONE ✔️ with that .. lol . “People” are complicated 😂. Advice: as soon as you can turn your investment profit .. sell - get out . Run like your hair is on fire . 🔥
I guess I'm the exception to the rule. Fulltime RV living has actually been cheaper than my sticks and bricks. But I researched for 3 years - including your videos - and pretty much knew how I wanted to do this. I also think that if you are frugal at home, you will be frugal on the road. Habits are habits. Good or bad. I use campgrounds occasionally but I mostly boondock. Which is a whole different prep and mindset. Saves me a ton of money. My only unexpected expense was the rise in fuel costs. But I'm parking more and driving less. Overall, I'm living my best life and have no regrets. I am blessed to be where I am. Thanks for helping me to get there. God Bless!
This really isn't something I was told & fell for,,,, however they became the biggest obstacles, while full-timing for the past yrs.. for me: 1) The cost. 2) Relationships..spouse & family. It can be expensive no matter how you cut the cost. Tight spaces 365 24/7 can be a strain even for the closest couples.
My wife and I fell for some pretty big whoppers with our first RV. This couple is absolutely correct, take your time and think things through. Over the years that I have been buying cars, trucks and what ever, Camping World gave new meaning to the phrase "high pressure". Stay away from them, they are bad news. Great video.
Here's the thing... I knew what I was getting into and knew what pitfalls to avoid because I watched you guys long before we bought our RV, LOL! I knew what we were getting into. My husband pretty much comes along for the ride and does all the maintenance, emptying the stinky slinky, & all the dirty work!. 😂
My old favorite sales guy for a 50-year family-owned RV dealership used to refer to CW as "Rip-Off World" 😏😄 And, please don't ever regret your going all-in on your campground. As full-time RV'ers age, more and more are looking at purchasing a plot where they can stop and rest. You two are there (okay: maybe not the "rest" part LOL!) already, and you have land, which "they're not making any more of." I think your decision will serve you well into the future. 👍
Just like learning to RV you have to learn how to be campground owners too! Its all part of life . An adventure is going someplace , doing something you havent done before or seeing the familar with a new perspective. Life is an Adventure!
Well...at least if you buy a campground you always have a place to park your RV if the world falls apart. It's a little more expensive than a Thousand Trails membership though😅...
I always had a bad feeling about Camping World.I worked camped with an RV trailer. Seven years. Sometimes I put my RV in storage. Sometimes I lived in it.
That’s actually a really good idea. Once you tow with a weight distribution hitch, you’ll never go back to a regular hitch. Makes the trailer feel like it’s part of your vehicles frame. The whole combination handles beautifully.
I couldn't agree with you more. Well done in summarizing the lies. To the general public reading this, just be careful - if it is made in Indiana - it is junk. Check the manufacturers that are outside of state the of Indiana, do your research because they may be buying component parts that are made in Indiana. Workers in Indiana move from one company to the next with the same crappy workmanship which translate into poor quality. When the RV industry have layoffs, that's when they switch companies. Just be very careful when choosing a brand. Even those manufactured outside of Indiana are better but not by much. We need federal regulation in the RV industry just like the car industry. But Indiana-based RV companies fight really hard to keep the regulators out of their industry. If we put pressure on the politicians, they may do something about it. We just have to wait and see... Best wishes to all!
on thing we fell for is that "sure, our techs know how to install that". We had solar and lithium batteries installed at a chain RV shop and they didn't quite get it right. The battery manufacturer gave us the name of a mobile RV tech who specialized in off grid systems and he did a fabulous job! And he let us know what the RV dealership's mistakes were. It all came from ignorance.
We have bought a Thousand Trails Basic Camping Pass yearly for the past several years. In 2024 it is $725/year. You can camp two weeks in, then a week out of the system year round (depending on the zone chosen and time of year, of course). For casual campers, it can be a bargain. Only long term campers 'need' an upgraded lifelong membership.
I had always heard that you don't need insurance for your rv because it is covered by your auto insurance when connected to your truck? You guys did a video on that one, debunking that lie.
Those early episodes were rough. I felt so bad for you. When you had your generator stolen. You were just so shocked. That is when I started posting hints. I hope over the years, they have been some help.
Praying GOD continues to bless yall Lies are of the devil. Thanks for being open and transparent on ALL of your videos! Much love from the pan handle of Florida
@FOMC6780 0 seconds ago The unlimited maintenance problems that come with owning an RV and the waiting to get the RV repaired and also where are you going to stay when your house is in the Shop?
Membership! I like your video. You also missed that you only going to RV seasonally, unless you are going be to full-time RV. My wife only like RV for 2 weeks at time.
Your last advise about owning a campground. It's the same as any owning any business. A lot of hard work that many times you don't get paid for. I feel lucky because I can work on our camper as a hobby. We bought a basic camper and we are making it our own by putting the things we want into it. One of the things we like is when we go visit the kids we park our camper out side of their house and we can go to bed and get up went we feel like it and not disturb anybody.
Im looking to start a Bed and breakfast and becoming a harvest host by offering a couple of spots to thru campers to help spread the word of mu business , what do u think
Fuel cards save so much money , local station 43 cents lower than loves , fuel card saved 39 cents making loves cost 4 cents more after "savings". Convenient maybe for a big rig ,savings not always.
:) THANKS MUCH for ll you do and SHARE! I have fallen into the Rabbit Hole with my 1st RV, and had to sell it after a Year or so.. ALL the BEST and Cheers from Upper Left! :)
Agreed. Especially about the cost. It’s not cheap and when ppl say that, it drives me nuts (yes, it could be, if you are in the middle of nowhere doing nothing). Lol Another thing I hear a lot (which is not a lie), when ppl tell you to rent an RV for a week. I have to disagree because we owned 3 RVs and each time felt differently (all 3 motorhomes, so it’s not like we even changed our style of traveling). When we got our last one (the dream RV for us), the first week or two felt weird. I don’t even know why. We got exactly what we wanted but felt like we made a mistake. Now we love it but had we rented it for a week, we would not have bought it. To each their own of course but I don’t think renting for a week is helpful. Especially if you are a newbie. You don’t know what you don’t know. That takes time and it is the fun part - figuring things out. Apart from very few safety equipment, all you need is a good attitude and a sense of curiosity. Happy camping. We are going to Europe but our motorhome will be waiting for us when we come back in 6 months or… who knows lol
I love this , when I bought my RV new in 2016 I got a class C Winnebago view I justified it to my wife by telling her my 22 year old Tundra only gets 15MPG and this View gets about the same. Yes a very expensive MB engine running diesel and it does get about 14 mpg in town driving and maybe 17 downhill with a heavy tail wind but look at fuel prices. I did not buy from Camping world though and I am a Boondockers Welcome member and have really met some awesome people but you are right on many points. Thanks for your honesty I alway tell people when they ask "watch the sewer dump scene in the movie RV before committing to the RV life"
I have a wonderful solid Oak dining table and 6 chairs built by Amish in Missouri. I wouldn't change it for anything. It was very expensive and worth every penny. "Amish Made" is a tag you should absolutely do your research on before you buy.
We paid 2,000 for a used 1975 Prowler Travel Trailer, it was fully operable, and we lived in it 7 months a year at the Arizona Gem shows, did it for 15 yrs. It was our no place like home, humble home. We enjoyed the life immensely. It can be done comfortably and inexpensively. Since the trailer matched our truck in color, and was kept clean, we were allowed in rv parks that wanted 10 yrs or newer rvs only. 1996 to 2012
Well I guess we are the odd balls ! I did my research for a year and didn’t fall for any bad advice. We sold our home and paid cash for our Riverstone and half of the amount on the 2022 F-450 just to keep our credit score up we had a independent inspector check it before we signed the paperwork. No problems in 2 and a half years. So o in other words we are the odd ball in a good way.
Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaa,,,,,,,,,, what the heck is this? I'm lovin' it. Is this going to be a daily? Love your posts. Keep 'em coming! About financing, my plan is to buy my RV cash. I'm also on track to buy a sliver of land to build an RV pad and a cabin and use it as my home base. Sough Dakota is at the top of my list. Excellent political environment, perfect conservative politics, terrific history and a variety of attractive small towns to buy near. Oh, and excellent tax benefits as well.

Yup
House of paper is very true!
I always thought it was a tin can on the road.

Too many lies

As full-time RV'ers age, more and more are looking at purchasing a plot where they can stop and rest. You two are there (okay: maybe not the "rest" part LOL!) already, and you have land, which "they're not making any more of."
I think your decision will serve you well into the future.
We’re blessed
I always had a bad feeling about Camping World.I worked camped with an RV trailer. Seven years. Sometimes I put my RV in storage. Sometimes I lived in it.
BRILLIANT VIDEO. THANKS
Blessed Tuesday everyone ❤
❤️
Was told i needed a weight distribution hitch for my camper
That’s actually a really good idea. Once you tow with a weight distribution hitch, you’ll never go back to a regular hitch. Makes the trailer feel like it’s part of your vehicles frame. The whole combination handles beautifully.
You do need a weight distribution hitch

You guys can be informative and also hilarious Best for yaa
on thing we fell for is that "sure, our techs know how to install that".
THE GEAR!! That was the biggest lie we got caught up in. We didn't use most of that crap we bought when we got our first RV.
Its half ton towable, No problem. They tell this one in Alberta too
Thanks for all your insights! (This was a cute video!)
You are so welcome!
I had always heard that you don't need insurance for your rv because it is covered by your auto insurance when connected to your truck?
You guys did a video on that one, debunking that lie.
Great ! Great !! Great Info !!!
If you buy the extended warranty……. You’ll be covered for everything.
( we don’t buy extended warranties)
No warranty!
Those early episodes were rough. I felt so bad for you. When you had your generator stolen. You were just so shocked. That is when I started posting hints. I hope over the years, they have been some help.
You’ve been a huge help Ken
Airstream has entered the chat. Look at all tgis aluminum.

The unlimited maintenance problems that come with owning an RV and the waiting to get the RV repaired and also where are you going to stay when your house is in the Shop?
We are thinking of renting an RV to "Try before we buy", Learning curve before owning, as it were. Is that a good idea?
Been in mine for 3 years full time. No glamor. Not cheap.
Live and learn👍🏽
Always❤️
BEST RV INFO EVER 🙌🙏🙌
Some people look at the dry wt. to see if their subcompact 4 cylinder car can pull that 3500 pound dry wt rv.
Membership! I like your video. You also missed that you only going to RV seasonally, unless you are going be to full-time RV. My wife only like RV for 2 weeks at time.
I always love your video
Convenient maybe for a big rig ,savings not always.
what do you do in antisipation of really bad weather heading out soon looking at tornados and such
Stay home another day.
If you get caught, always put your awning in, and park head into the wind...but best to stop under an overhead roof, like at a gas station.
Watch the weather closely
:) THANKS MUCH for ll you do and SHARE! I have fallen into the Rabbit Hole with my 1st RV, and had to sell it after a Year or so.. ALL the BEST and Cheers from Upper Left! :)
One day I am gonna make it up there to CAMP
I love my Rv
We do to
Agreed. Especially about the cost. It’s not cheap and when ppl say that, it drives me nuts (yes, it could be, if you are in the middle of nowhere doing nothing). Lol
Another thing I hear a lot (which is not a lie), when ppl tell you to rent an RV for a week.
Thanks for your honesty I alway tell people when they ask "watch the sewer dump scene in the movie RV before committing to the RV life"
Thank you for the support Frank
I have a wonderful solid Oak dining table and 6 chairs built by Amish in Missouri. I wouldn't change it for anything. It was very expensive and worth every penny.
"Amish Made" is a tag you should absolutely do your research on before you buy.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
See you in June :-) Keep all these tips coming - NEWBIE Education LOVE IT!
More to come!
1996 to 2012
That’s awesome Joann
EXCELLENT PODCAST
Thank you
Well I guess we are the odd balls !
We’re all odd in our own way😀
The grass is always green if you paint it on your RV.
Do you still have your campground?
