      100% Stegz are the bomb for big hill climbs.
      The other one for helping with arm pump and arm fatigue is foam rally grips. 👍

      Step Pegz help a lot, I couldn’t do it without them on the 501

    Hi Josh, great effort up Billy Goats bluff. I’m an older guy but I’ve worked out with my riding if I work out much kms per litre, say 21km per litre hard stuff and 25l per km easy stuff I get to my max range per tank. 14l=294km to 350km. I ride a husky 701 and 450. Maybe that’s obvious to some but it works for me.

    I have had to lean the wr over to fuel pump side to get the last bit of fuel out of safari tank, Get some steg pegs on the wr its a game changer for hill climbs.

    Thx for the tyre rundown, I ran a Trackionator on the rear for our last Simpson trip and it went alright, but you know what, the d606 hangs in there regardless of the terain, where are you buying your tyres?

    • @AusMoto
      @AusMoto  10 месяцев назад +2

      No worries mate and yeah, definitely not ruling out the D606. I just order them wherever they're cheapest but usually like ordering from MXStore

    Great debrief guys some hard info and questions answered from the trip. Does Billy goat not shut during winter like the rest of the high country? Seem very unwise going near it when it’s wet, just look at the trouble you guys had.
    I know it’s all part of the adventure, but have you considered trailering the bikes to broken hill or somewhere along the way and doing the Simpson lap from there? I want to go to the cape this year but the thought of 5200kms of tar just to get to cairns and back is really putting me off.

    • @AusMoto
      @AusMoto  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks mate!
      Yeah, Billy Goats is open year round and yeah, definitely don't want to hit it if it's just rained but I reckon if it had rained in the week leading up to our attempt, it would have been much better condition.
      We have considered but logistically it's just easier to ride from Melb but for something like the cape, would 100% be trailering or shipping the bikes up.

    • @ChristinaHarrison-s7v
      @ChristinaHarrison-s7v Месяц назад

      BGB is NOT open all year round and is subject to winter closures. I would hope you have accidentally misinformed and not doing the wrong thing to ruin it for those doing it right. Enjoy your adventures😊

    I thought that safari tank was leaking in the video when you dropped the bike over?

    • @AusMoto
      @AusMoto  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah mate, it did spill a bit of petrol however not because of a crack in the tank, it was just out the top breather hose which is normal with any of these type of tanks when they're tipped over.

  • @whoscook4481
    @whoscook4481 10 месяцев назад +1

    I don’t think you’ve outgrown the bike. Wrr have been conquering much rougher stuff for a long time. Maybe a bad day. Soften the settings on your suspension and get up that thing! You can do it!

    The weight… picking up the WR, waaaaayyyy easier than the 690. This is the reason I went from the 690 to the 500 EXC

  • @jamieknight9636

    Don't think you'll get 350k out of the Safari, FYI I ran the Wr dry from Birdsville into the Simpson, it ran out at 300km, my calcs had 22lts Birdsville to MtDare

    • @AusMoto
      @AusMoto  10 месяцев назад

      I reckon it depends on the mix of freeway/off-road but on this trip I got ~310k's with like 1.5L left over after a little bit of cruisy off-road and some hard freeway k's.

    Arms dying trying to climb standing up? Dont stand up! Absolute energy sapping, arm killing way to go about it. Sit down. Take the load off your arms. Plant your backside into the seat to grip it, lean forward as needed and take the load off. Concentrate on your balance and as neutral body effort as possible to get the job done, its a long climb and a long day. You both appear to be fit enough, so its all in the skill/technique/experience department. Keep riding, practice, practice.

    • @AusMoto
      @AusMoto  10 месяцев назад

      100% it's a skill/technique issue but I'll say that Billy Goats is probably one of those where it's damn near impossible to sit down in some sections just because how rocky it is, you just get thrown around too much sitting down. Thanks for the comment mate, we'll certainly be practising to conquer Billy Goats!

    • @zackiaryruddick701
      @zackiaryruddick701 10 месяцев назад +3

      You never want to sit on a hill climb, if you arms hurt it's because you are holding on too tight , stand and grip the bike with your legs and let go of your death grip on the bars it's a mental thing you have to get used to holding on to the bars lightly

    • @AusMoto
      @AusMoto  10 месяцев назад +1

      Agreed, I was probably death gripping the bars too much.

    • @brendenvosper7772
      @brendenvosper7772 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@AusMoto maintaining the goal is energy and physical preservation. For sure some will be too rough to stay down, but you don’t stay that way for very long and very much the exception. You take the load off where you can and legs ready to go. You’re prepared to stand and keep the composure but only where you have to. If it’s too rough, why is it too rough? Rear suspension working for you? Your bike should be tracking and also not pounding the hell out of you tracking up the rough. Billy Goats from bottom to top is a solid 30minute or so climb, do it often enough on all sizes of bikes. To be fully standing and hanging on is unrealistic and knowing being way up over the bars to be neutral on your hands is also unrealistic.

    The mind boggles, and the comedic opportunity is certainly not lost on me - ‘debriefing the billy goat you’ve been riding for ten years’ is the most obvious faux par I’ve seen in what was obviously supposed to be quite a serious discussion, too good to be missed by a clever aussie comedian!!
